Der Verzicht auf absolut gültige Erkenntnis, heute in den Naturwissenschaften beinahe schon selbstverständlich, ist erst jüngeren Datums. Noch im vergangenen Jahrhundert zweifelte die experimentelle Forschung kaum an der vollkommenen Begreifbarkeit der Welt. Diesen Wandel zu erkunden und aufzuzeigen ist Thema der vorliegenden Studie. Der erste Teil präsentiert verschiedene Typen neuzeitlicher und moderner Wissenschaftsauffassungen von Galilei über Newton bis hin zu Kant. Im zweiten Teil werden Entwicklung und Wandel der Wissenschafts- und Naturauffassung bei Helmholtz (1821-1895) erstmals mittels detaillierter Textanalysen einer umfassenden (...) Rekonstruktion unterzogen. Die Relativierung des Wahrheitsanspruchs erlaubt es Helmholtz, seine Naturauffassung trotz der antimechanistischen Kritik innerhalb der Physik, die im letzten Viertel des vergangenen Jahrhunderts laut wurde, als Hypothese aufrechtzuerhalten. Auch gewährt die Studie eine neue Sichtweise des Verhältnisses zwischen Helmholtz und Kant, das in der Vergangenheit kontroverse Beurteilungen erfuhr. (shrink)

The Adequate Cause Theory: On the relation of Philosophical and Legal Concepts of Causality. The paper discusses the first explicit and logically convincing introduction of a concept of probabilistic causality into legal theories of causation in Germany by Johannes von Kries (1888). First, it is shown how this step was prepared by the failure of the philosophical analysis of causation which took its leading examples from physics to overcome the difficulties which presented themselves in cases of "irreducible multicausality". Secondly, I (...) give the basic ideas of Kries's connection of causal theory and probability theory by presenting his concept of "scope" ("Spielraum"). Finally, I turn to some concepts which are still controversively discussed in legal contexts and which exhibit the logical structure analysed by Kries. It is shown that a certain indefiniteness of the relevant distinctions, which cannot be overcome, does not paralyse their being useful. (shrink)

The physiologist and neo-Kantian philosopher Johannes von Kries (1853-1928) wrote one of the most philosophically important works on the foundation of probability after P.S. Laplace and before the First World War, his Principien der Wohrscheinlich-keitsrechnung (1886, repr. 1927). In this book, von Kries developed a highly original interpretation of probability, which maintains it to be both logical and objectively physical. After presenting his approach I shall pursue the influence it had on Ludwig Wittgenstein and Friedrich Waismann. It seems that von (...) Kries's approach had more potential than recognized in his time and that putting Waismann's and Wittgenstein's early work in a von Kries perspective is able to shed light on the notion of an elementary proposition. Pierre-Simon Laplace zählt zu den großen Physiker-Philosophen der französischen Aufklärungszeit im 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein Name ist in der Philosophie bekannt, sein Werk jedoch weitgehend ungelesen; bei der philosophiehistorischen Kanonbildung im 19. Jahrhundert hat die mathematische Naturphilosophie nur einen geringen Eingang in die Philosophiegeschichte gefunden. Henrich stellt das philosophisch-physikalische Weltbild dar, das Laplace vor dem Hintergrund der Kosmologie entworfen hat. Er erläutert, welche himmelsmechanischen Ergebnisse seit Newton und Leibniz erarbeitet wurden und worin deren weltanschauliche Relevanz besteht. Das methodologische Selbstverständnis (...) von Laplace wird einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen, wobei bei der Beurteilung die Funktionsfähigkeit der Physik unabhängig von ihrer wissenschaftstheoretischen Reflexion berücksichtigt wird; dies ist relevant für die in der Philosophiegeschichte selten gestellte Frage, wieviel Philosophie in die wissenschaftliche Praxis eingeht. Dem Laplace'schen philosophischen Hauptwerk "Exposition du système du monde" ist ein Abriss der Astronomiegeschichte beigegeben, der in der Wissenschaftsphilosophie wirkungsmächtig geworden ist. Dieser Précis vermittelt die Annahmen der Metaphysikfreiheit, des Induktivismus und einer kumulativen Wissenschaftsauffassung, von denen ausgehend Laplace die Wissenschaftsgeschichte als nahezu linearen Fortschrittsprozess beurteilt. Henrich legt in seinem Resumee zur Wirkungsgeschichte zum einen dar, wie Laplace wissenschaftliche Standards fixiert hat, zum anderen, dass auch opponierende Philosophen wie Schleiermacher, Hegel oder Dilthey nachweisbar an der Exposition Gegenpositionen entwickelt haben. Bei der Trennung von Geisteswissenschaften und Naturwissenschaften war Laplace die naturwissenschaftliche Referenz. (shrink)
