  1. A Simplest Systematics for the Organization of Turn-Taking for Conversation.Gail Jefferson, Andrei Korbut, Harvey Sacks & Emmanuel Schegloff - 2015 - Russian Sociological Review 14 (1):142-202.
The article is the first Russian translation of the most well-known piece in conversation analysis, written by the founders of CA Harvey Sacks, Emanuel Schegloff and Gail Jefferson. It has become a milestone in the development of the discipline. The authors offer a comprehensive approach to the study of conversational interactions. The approach is based on the analysis of detailed transcripts of the records of natural conversations. The authors show that in the course of the conversation co-conversationalists use a number (...)

  • ‘Going public’: constructing the personal in a television news interview.Joanna Thornborrow - 2010 - Discourse and Communication 4 (2):105-123.
In this article I examine how a ‘private’, inside story was constructed through an extended news interview drawing on models of both the experiential and the accountable broadcast interview. The analysis, based on aspects of adjacency sequencing, question/ response design, and narrative organization, explores the ways in which a personal account is elicited about an event that had been highly prominent in the news. However, I also look at how ‘accountability’ emerges as an issue during the interview, and on how (...)

  • Categorization, Interaction, Policy, and Debate.William Housley & Richard Fitzgerald - 2007 - Critical Discourse Studies 4 (2):187-206.
During the course of this article the themes of public accountability, government policy, and interaction in media settings are examined. In particular, we examine empirical instances of media discourse as a means of exploring the use of identity categories, predicates, and configurations as a means of accomplishing policy debate in participatory frameworks such as radio phone-ins and the accountable frames of political interviews. This paper respecifies and explores the situated character of media settings as a means of documenting, describing, and (...)

  • Non-neutrality and argument in the hybrid political interview.Ian Hutchby - 2011 - Discourse Studies 13 (3):349-365.
This article explores the nature of argumentative interaction in the hybrid political interview: a broadcast news genre whose discourse positions the journalist not just as investigator but as socio-political advocate. Such interviews offer explicit challenges to the traditionally conceived ‘neutral’ role of the broadcast news journalist. Interviewer ‘non-neutrality’ is examined in contexts where the speech exchange system shifts into the unmitigated and aggravated opposition characteristic of argument. Drawing on a sample of interviews involving different hosts, I analyse the structural features (...)

  • Asking Questions, Making Sound-Bites: Research Reports, Interviews and Television News Stories.Mats Nylund - 2003 - Discourse Studies 5 (4):517-533.
This article is a detailed discourse analytic study about the transformation of three social research reports into television news, above all through the reporter–source interview. The focus is on how questions are used to probe responses and explanations and how these are either omitted from or incorporated into the final news stories. By this unique research design the interactional conduct of the reporter–source interview as well as some aspects of question design applied in the interview are described. It is argued (...)

  • Authenticating Talk: Building Public Identities in Audience Participation Broadcasting.Joanna Thornborrow - 2001 - Discourse Studies 3 (4):459-479.
Public participation broadcasting has recently become the focus of attention in media studies, as well as from the social interactional perspectives of discourse and conversation analysis, and it has been argued in particular that the talk show genre has given new and enhanced status to the `authentic' voice of lay members of the public. What remains largely unexplored is how lay participants discursively construct authentic positions for their own knowledgeable participation in such discourse. Expert speakers in public participation broadcasts are (...)

  • Announced refusal to answer: a study of norms and accountability in broadcast political interviews.Mats Ekström - 2009 - Discourse Studies 11 (6):681-702.
This article investigates the announced refusal to answer as a form of dispreferred and challenging response in broadcast political interviews. The aim is to study how the rightness and wrongness of conduct is dealt with in situations of announced refusal. More specifically, the paper focuses on: announced refusal as a particular type of conduct; the orientation to norms and accountability in situations of announced refusal; how the legitimacy of politics and journalism is negotiated in broadcast interviews. The data consist of (...)
