  1. Nirvana: Concept, Imagery, Narrative.Steven Collins - 2010 - Cambridge University Press.
The idea of nirvana is alluring but elusive for non-specialists and specialists alike. Offering his own interpretation of key texts, Steven Collins explains the idea in a new, accessible way - as a concept, as an image, and as an element in the process of narrating both linear and cyclical time. Exploring nirvana from literary and philosophical perspectives, he argues that it has a specific role: to provide 'the sense of an ending' in both the systematic and the narrative thought (...)

  • Janamejaya’s Last Question.Christopher R. Austin - 2009 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 37 (6):597-625.
This article examines closely an important passage at the conclusion of the Mahābhārata wherein the final state of the epic heroes after death is defined. The Critical Edition’s phrasing of what precisely became of the characters once they arrived in heaven is unclear, and manuscript variants offer two apparently contradictory readings. In this article I present evidence in support of one of these readings, and respond to the Mahābhārata ’s seventeenth century commentator Nīlakaṇṭha Caturdhara, who champions the other. Underlying and (...)

  • The Dhvanyāloka. with the Locana.Daniel Henry Holmes Anandavardhana, J. Moussaieff Abhinavagupta, M. V. Ingalls, Masson & Patwardhan - 1990 - Harvard University Press.
For nearly a thousand years the brilliant analysis of aesthetic experience set forth in the Locana of Abhinavagupta, India's founding literary critic, has dominated traditional Indian theory on poetics and aesthetics. The Locana, presented here in English translation for the first time, is a commentary on the ninth-century Dhvanyaloka of Anandavardhana, which is itself the pivotal work in the history of Indian poetics. The Dhvanyaloka revolutionized Sanskrit literary theory by proposing that the main goal of good poetry is the evocation (...)
