Two-dimensional approaches to semantics, broadly understood, recognize two "dimensions" of the meaning or content of linguistic items. On these approaches, expressions and their utterances are associated with two different sorts of semantic values, which play different explanatory roles. Typically, one semantic value is associated with reference and ordinary truth-conditions, while the other is associated with the way that reference and truth-conditions depend on the external world. Modern empiricism has been conditioned in large part by two dogmas. One is a belief in some fundamental cleavage between truths which are analytic, or grounded in meanings independently of matters of fact, and truth which are synthetic, or grounded in fact. The other dogma is reductionism: the belief that each meaningful statement is equivalent to some logical construct upon terms which refer to immediate experience. Both dogmas, I shall argue, are ill founded. One effect of abandoning them is, as (...) we shall see, a blurring of the supposed boundary between speculative metaphysics and natural science. Selon une conception traditionnelle de la nécessité, les propositions nécessaires expriment des faits d'un certain type, des faits nécessaires. Notre langage doit comporter des propositions nécessaires, s'il veut pouvoir représenter tous les faits que comporte la réalité. Wittgenstein soutient, au contraire, que les propositions nécessaires ne sont, en réalité, que l'expression déguisée de règles "grammaticales" que nous avons adoptées pour la représentation de la réalité et qui ne nous ont pas été imposées par elle en un sens comparable à celui (...) auquel l'acceptation d'une proposition descriptive ordinaire peut nous être imposée par ce qui est décrit. L'autonomie de la grammaire contraste avec la dépendance des propositions ordinaires par rapport à la réalité et, loin de la remettre en question, en constitue au contraire la condition de possibilité essentielle. Wittgenstein qualifie d'"arbitraires" les propositions grammaticales, en voulant dire par là qu'elles ne sont pas elles-mêmes soumises au genre de responsabilité envers la réalité qu'elles contribuent à déterminer pour les autres propositions. Le paradoxe (que l'on pourrait qualifier de "transcendantal") est que, une fois que la nécessité a été reconnue, il est impossible de dire par quoi elle pourrait avoir été imposée et qu'elle ne peut apparemment s'exprimer autrement que dans des règles arbitraires.
