  • Space and Embodied Experience: Rethinking the Body in Pain.Marja-Liisa Honkasalo - 1998 - Body and Society 4 (2):35-57.
In this article I discuss the problem of embodied subjectivity, viewed from the perspective of spatiality. The questions I address arise from my ethnographic study on chronic pain. My main argument is that, in contrast to philosophical understanding of space as an a priori, or as a container, space and spatiality are shaped and reshaped through the body in pain. What characterizes most patients' experiences of space is movement. This can be understood through Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological theory of the lived body (...)

  • Introduction to the Special Issue Semiotics of Perception Being in the World of the Living—Semiotic Perspectives.Kati Lindström & Morten Tønnessen - 2010 - Biosemiotics 3 (3):257-261.
This special issue on the semiotics of perception originates from two workshops arranged in Tartu, Estonia, in February 2009. We are located at the junction of nature and culture, and of semiotics and phenomenology. Can they be reconciled? More particularly, can subfields such as biosemiotics and ecophenomenology be mutually enriching? The authors of the current special issue believe that they can. Semiotic study of life and the living can emerge as properly informed only if it is capable of incorporating observations (...)

  • Autocommunication and Perceptual Markers in Landscape: Japanese Examples. [REVIEW]Kati Lindström - 2010 - Biosemiotics 3 (3):359-373.
Juri Lotman distinguishes between two main types of communication. In addition to the classical I-YOU communication, he speaks about I-I communication, where both the addresser and the addressee are one and the same person. Contrary to how it sounds, autocommunication is not self-sufficient musing inside one’s self, it is remodelling oneself through a code from an entity outside oneself, be it animate or inanimate. According to Lotman, it is often the rhythmical phenomena like poetry, the rhythm of waves, etc. that (...)
