The purpose of this paper is to examine some passages of Tarski‘s paper ’On the concept of logical consequence’ and to show that some recent readings of those passages are wrong. John Etchemendy has claimed that in those passages Tarski gave an argument purporting to show that the notion of logical consequence defined by him (as opposed to some pretheoretic notion of logical consequence) possesses certain modal properties. Etchemendy further claims that the argument he attributes to Tarski is fallacious. Some (...) of Etchemendy’s critics have granted him that Tarski did give an argument purporting to show that the defined notion possesses certain modal properties ; but they have claimed that Tarski’s argument was not a fallacious one. I will show that both Etchemendy and his critics are wrong; in the relevant passages, Tarski did not offer (nor did he intend to offer) an argument that the defined notion of logical consequence possesses any modal properties. The paper offers a new analysis of the difficulties involved in the construction of a general and substantive correspondence theory of truth and delineates a solution to these difficulties in the form of a new methodology. The central argument is inspired by Kant, and the proposed methodology is explained and justified both in general philosophical terms and by reference to a particular variant of Tarski's theory. In his classic 1936 essay "On the Concept of Logical Consequence", Alfred Tarski used the notion of satisfaction to give a semantic characterization of the logical properties. Tarski is generally credited with introducing the model-theoretic characterization of the logical properties familiar to us today. However, in his book, The Concept of Logical Consequence, Etchemendy argues that Tarski's account is inadequate for quite a number of reasons, and is actually incompatible with the standard model-theoretic account. Many of his criticisms are meant (...) to apply to the model-theoretic account as well. In this paper, I discuss the following four critical charges that Etchemendy makes against Tarski and his account of the logical properties: (1) (a) Tarski's account of logical consequence diverges from the standard model-theoretic account at points where the latter account gets it right. (b) Tarski's account cannot be brought into line with the model-theoretic account, because the two are fundamentally incompatible. (2) There are simple counterexamples (enumerated by Etchemendy) which show that Tarski's account is wrong. (3) Tarski committed a modal fallacy when arguing that his account captures our pre-theoretical concept of logical consequence, and so obscured an essential weakness of the account. (4) Tarski's account depends on there being a distinction between the "logical terms" and the "non-logical terms" of a language, but (according to Etchemendy) there are very simple (even first-order) languages for which no such distinction can be made. Etchemendy's critique raises historical and philosophical questions about important foundational work. However, Etchemendy is mistaken about each of these central criticisms. In the course of justifying that claim, I give a sustained explication and defense of Tarski's account. Moreover, since I will argue that Tarski's account and the model theoretic account really do come to the same thing, my subsequent defense of Tarski's account against Etchemendy's other attacks doubles as a defense against criticisms that would apply equally to the familiar model-theoretic account of the logical properties. This paper examines from a historical perspective Tarski's 1936 essay, "On the concept of logical consequence." I focus on two main aims. The primary aim is to show how Tarski's definition of logical consequence satisfies two desiderata he himself sets forth for it: (1) it must declare logically correct certain formalizations of the -rule and (2) it must allow for variation of the individual domain in the test for logical consequence. My arguments provide a refutation of some interpreters of Tarski, (...) and notably John Etchemendy, who have claimed that his definition does not satisfy those desiderata. A secondary aim of the paper is to offer some basic elements for an understanding of Tarski's definition in the historical logico-philosophical context in which it was proposed. Such historical understanding provides useful insights on Tarski's informal ideas on logical consequence and their internal cohesion. (shrink)

In his 1936 paper, "The Concept of Logical Consequence," Alfred Tarski set out the first formulation of the model-theoretic definition of logical consequence. This definition has hence become a central canon of contemporary logical inquiry. However, it has come under recent attack. In this dissertation, I present a defense of the standard model-theoretic analyses of the concepts of validity and consequence against various objections. ;In the first chapter, it is argued that the model-theoretic analysis of natural language argumentation is based (...) on determining relationships between structural properties of mathematical models and those of the language under study. This use of model theoretic structures involves the application of mathematical models to the description of a natural language; and as such, the determination of the analysis can best be decided in the context of discussing the analysis, qua mathematical analysis. ;In the second chapter, I discuss the distinction between representational semantics and interpretational semantics. I argue that Etchemendy presents us with a false dilemma: the semantics underlying the model-theoretic analyses of the logical properties is neither a representational semantics, nor an interpretational semantics. I then formulate a precise and defensible version of Tarski's Thesis. ;In chapter 3, I take up the two main lines of argument directed against Tarski's Thesis. First, I argue that neither Etchemendy's under-generational and over-generational examples, nor McGee's reliability problem argue against the formulation of Tarski's Thesis given in this work. Second, I argue that the claims brought out in Etchemendy's discussion of the Reduction Principle and in McGee's discussion of the Contingency Problem are mistaken, and that the conclusions they draw from these claims are unwarranted. ;Finally, chapter 4 takes up historical issues surrounding both the discrepancies between Tarski's original formulation of the model-theoretic definitions and their present day incarnations, and Etchemendy's attribution to Tarski of "Tarski's Fallacy." I argue that the historical account given Tarski's 1936 paper by Etchemendy is mistaken, and that only the most narrow and unkind reading supports the fallacy attribution. (shrink)

Criticism of Soames' understanding of Tarskian theories of truth.

Recent years have seen the appearance of many English-language hand books of logic and numerous monographs on topical discoveries in the foundations of mathematics. These publications on the foundations of mathematics as a whole are rather difficult for the beginners or refer the reader to other handbooks and various piecemeal contribu tions and also sometimes to largely conceived "mathematical fol klore" of unpublished results. As distinct from these, the present book is as easy as possible systematic exposition of the now (...) classical results in the foundations of mathematics. Hence the book may be useful especially for those readers who want to have all the proofs carried out in full and all the concepts explained in detail. In this sense the book is self-contained. The reader's ability to guess is not assumed, and the author's ambition was to reduce the use of such words as evident and obvious in proofs to a minimum. This is why the book, it is believed, may be helpful in teaching or learning the foundation of mathematics in those situations in which the student cannot refer to a parallel lecture on the subject. This is also the reason that I do not insert in the book the last results and the most modem and fashionable approaches to the subject, which does not enrich the essential knowledge in founda tions but can discourage the beginner by their abstract form. This paper examines the question of the extensional correctness of Tarskian definitions of logical truth and logical consequence. I identify a few different informal properties which are necessary for a sentence to be an informal logical truth and look at whether they are necessary properties of Tarskian logical truths. I examine arguments by John Etchemendy and Vann McGee to the effect that some of those properties are not necessary properties of some Tarskian logical truths, and find them unconvincing. I stress (...) the point that since the hypothesis that Tarski's definitions are extensionally correct is deeply entrenched, the burden of proof is still on the shoulders of Tarski's critics, who have not lifted the burden. ) Modern theories of formal truth have traditionally been used to analyse semantic paradoxes, but their field of application goes well beyond this field to include ontological issues, Godel′s incompleteness phenomena, and the relationship between object language, meta language and reduction. All these fields have had new light sched upon them by studies on the theories of truth. In providing a first summary of the various approaches in this field the author documents their respective advantages and areas of application. The (...) emphasis here is on the axiomatic theories of truth developed by Cantini, Feferman, Friedman and the autor himself, which over the past ten years have increasingly gained ground over the semantic theories of Kripke et al. The book describes the way in which many of the aciomatic proposals are built up and expand on semantic theories. This ist the first time that the results in this field have been made accessible to readers in their larger context. The book deals in detail with the technical aspects and so is ideal as a point of entry into the vast array of literature on the metamathematics of this field. A key objective of the book is to extablish a connection between the latest theories of truth and the older constructions elaborated by Tarski. He made a number of important findings about the formal properties of truth back in the 1930s, but some of his constructions are now considered to be obsolete. Tarski′s views appear in a new light in this book since some of his ideas have only been formulated in recent years. (shrink)

The proof-theoretic results on axiomatic theories oftruth obtained by different authors in recent years are surveyed.In particular, the theories of truth are related to subsystems ofsecond-order analysis. On the basis of these results, thesuitability of axiomatic theories of truth for ontologicalreduction is evaluated.

Some axiomatic theories of truth and related subsystems of second-order arithmetic are surveyed and shown to be conservative over their respective base theory. In particular, it is shown by purely finitistically means that the theory PA ÷ "there is a satisfaction class" and the theory FS of [2] are conservative over PA.
