  1. Rethinking the Learning Society: Giorgio Agamben on Studying, Stupidity, and Impotence.Tyson E. Lewis - 2011 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 30 (6):585-599.
In this article, the author rethinks critiques of the learning society using Giorgio Agamben’s theory of potentiality. Summarizing several major contributions to our understanding of the limitations of the discourse of learning, the author proposes that critics thus far have failed to fully pinpoint the exact danger of learning. Importantly, learning is not only a rejection of the democratic or political dimension of education but it is first and foremost predicated on a false ontology of potentiality. What is put at (...)

  • Learning after progress? Isabelle Stengers, artificial learning, and the future as problem.Hans Schildermans - 2024 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 57 (6):1044-1058.
The aim of this article is to rethink the relation between education and progress, claiming that discourses of progress tend to project specific visions of the future and thereby instrumentalize education to achieve these visions while foreclosing other possible futures. The first part of the paper argues that the historical pact between education and progress has been recently recast in terms of learning. Learning receives at the same time an economic and a political interpretation in this context, turning issues such (...)

  • Sketching a Place for Education in Times of Learning.Laboratory for Education and Society (ed.) - 2018 - Springer.
This book explores how traditional institutions of education are affected by the current discourse and practices of ‘learning’; and more specifically, how the evolution towards so-called ‘learning environments’ affects the kind of gathering or association that is staged and configured within families, schools and universities. In addition, it addresses the question of how to articulate what is educational in the context of ‘making’ family, school or university, and to what extent this making is always also a public act. The aim (...)

  • E-ducating the gaze: the idea of a poor pedagogy.Jan Masschelein - 2010 - Ethics and Education 5 (1):43-53.
Educating the gaze is easily understood as becoming conscious about what is 'really' happening in the world and becoming aware of the way our gaze is itself bound to a perspective and particular position. However, the paper explores a different idea. It understands educating the gaze not in the sense of 'educare' (teaching) but of 'e-ducere' as leading out, reaching out. E-ducating the gaze is not about getting at a liberated or critical view, but about liberating or displacing our view. (...)

  • Towards an Ontology of Teaching : Thing-Centred Pedagogy, Affirmation and Love for the World.Joris Vlieghe & Piotr Zamojski - 2019 - Springer Verlag.
This book opens an original and timely perspective on why it is we teach and want to pass on our world to the new generation. Teaching is presented in this book as a way of being, rather than as a matter of expertise, which is driven by love for a subject matter. With the help of philosophical thinkers such as Arendt, Badiou and Agamben, the authors articulate a fully positive account of education that goes beyond the critical approach, which has (...)

  • Conversing with Friends or (Higher) Education Beyond the Logic of Production.Morten Timmermann Korsgaard & Piotr Zamojski - 2023 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 42 (4):351-366.
In this paper, we will propose an idea of education as conversations between friends on matters of common concern. In a scholarly and pedagogical climate of competition, testing and accountability, there seems to be little room for true pedagogical and scholarly conversation. What we aim to develop here, is a vocabulary that is able to capture some educational experiences that are being repressed in the current educational and academic discourse and practice. Starting from our own experiences as higher education workers, (...)
