Much attention has been drawn to the cognitive basis of innovation. While interesting in many ways, this poses the threat of falling back to traditional internalist assumptions with regard to cognition. We oppose the ensuing contrast between internal cognitive processing and external public practices and technologies that such internal cognitive systems might produce and utilize. We argue that innovation is best understood from the gibsonian notion of affordance, and that many innovative practices emerge from the external scaffolding of cognitive processes. (...) The public engageability that allows the disclosure of hidden affordances is not only –not even primarily– a property of cognitive products, but of cognitive processes. We elaborate on this claims by drawing on Dutilh Novaes’ account of formal languages as cognitive technologies and Hutto’s Narrative Practice Hypothesis. This paves the way to sketch some general principles on how to strategically seek for innovation by targeting hidden affordances. (shrink)

The fact that Internet companies may record our personal data and track our online behavior for commercial or political purpose has emphasized aspects related to online privacy. This has also led to the development of search engines that promise no tracking and privacy. Search engines also have a major role in spreading low-quality health information such as that of anti-vaccine websites. This study investigates the relationship between search engines’ approach to privacy and the scientific quality of the information they return. (...) We analyzed the first 30 webpages returned searching “vaccines autism” in English, Spanish, Italian, and French. The results show that not only “alternative” search engines but also other commercial engines often return more anti-vaccine pages (10–53%) than Google (0%). Some localized versions of Google, however, returned more anti-vaccine webpages (up to 10%) than Google. Health information returned by search engines has an impact on public health and, specifically, in the acceptance of vaccines. The issue of information quality when seeking information for making health-related decisions also impact the ethical aspect represented by the right to an informed consent. Our study suggests that designing a search engine that is privacy savvy and avoids issues with filter bubbles that can result from user-tracking is necessary but insufficient; instead, mechanisms should be developed to test search engines from the perspective of information quality (particularly for health-related webpages) before they can be deemed trustworthy providers of public health information. C. Thi Nguyen's (2020) recent account of echo chambers as social epistemic structures that actively exclude outsiders’ voices has sparked debate on the connection between echo chambers and epistemic injustice (Santos 2021; Catala 2021; Elzinga 2021).In this paper I am mainly concerned with the connection between echo chambers and testimonial injustice, understood as an instance whereby a speaker receives less epistemic credibility than they deserve, due to a prejudice in the hearer (Fricker 2007). In her reconstruction of the types of (...) testimonial injustice, Catala implicitly equates incidental testimonial injustice as resulting from epistemic prejudice and systematic testimonial injustice as resulting from identity prejudice. As I will argue, there as certain cases that fall in between these interpretations, namely instances of incidental testimonial injustice, whereby the impact on the speaker is localized, but where the credibility deficit nevertheless results from identity prejudice. One example of how this can manifest is the structural distrust against health-care experts in anti-vaccination echo-chambers, wherein said experts’ testimony is dismissed due to unwarranted assumptions regarding their motives qua their social type. To understand the importance and severity of the testimonial injustices in echo chambers, we need to look beyond the specific harms that are done to the targeted speakers and the immediate loss of knowledge, but also take into account the consequences for fairness in public deliberation—the latter being a fundamental condition for procedural democratic legitimacy. ABSTRACT: In Japanese language, the “self” is always incardinated in a specific “relational” aspect that constitutes the subjective existential structure based on this spatial base in contrast with the temporal aspect that is the one that normally has the priority on Western tradition. In this paper I will try to expose this spatiality in the subject in relation with the climate and culture theory that we find on Watsuji Tetsurô´s work Fûdo (風土) (1935) as we can read in the newly (...) translated Spanish version entitled Antropología del paisaje. Climas, culturas y religiones. My study will be focused on the Prologue and First Chapter entitled “Filosofía del Paisaje” (Philosophy of Climate) in order to do an analysis of the spatial dimension recognizing the space as essential element in the constitution of the concept of subject in the philosophy of this Japanese philosopher. -/- Resum: El «jo», a la llengua japonesa, s’ubica sempre en un àmbit «relacional», de manera que trobem que en l’estructura existencial del subjecte l’accent queda posat en l’aspecte espacial i no tant en l’aspecte temporal, prioritzat a la filosofia occidental. En aquesta comunicació intentaré exposar l’aspecte espacial del jo en relació amb la teoria del clima que trobem a l’obra de Watsuji Tetsuro Fûdo ( ) (1935) que, en la seva recent traducció en llengua castellana, s’ha titulat Antropología del paisaje. Climas, culturas y religiones. El meu estudi se centrarà en el pròleg i en el primer capítol, titulat «Filosofía del paisaje», per a fer una anàlisi de la dimensió espacial reconeixent l’espai en tant que element essencial en la constitució del concepte de subjecte en la filosofia de l’autor japonès.
