Summary Analogue models are actual physical setups used to model something else. They are especially useful when what we wish to investigate is difficult to observe or experiment upon due to size or distance in space or time: for example, if the thing we wish to investigate is too large, too far away, takes place on a time scale that is too long, does not yet exist or has ceased to exist. The range and variety of analogue models is too (...) extensive to attempt a survey. In this article, I describe and discuss several different analogue model experiments, the results of those model experiments, and the basis for constructing them and interpreting their results. Examples of analogue models for surface waves in lakes, for earthquakes and volcanoes in geophysics, and for black holes in general relativity, are described, with a focus on examining the bases for claims that these analogues are appropriate analogues of what they are used to investigate. A table showing three different kinds of bases for reasoning using analogue models is provided. Finally, it is shown how the examples in this article counter three common misconceptions about the use of analogue models in physics. (shrink)

This essay explores the psychological and philosophical consequences of living in a simulated world amid ecological collapse. Drawing from Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality, James Lovelock’s Gaia Hypothesis, and Stoic philosophy, it argues that the modern world confronts not only an environmental crisis but a crisis of perception and meaning. In a society where symbolic gestures often replace real environmental action, individuals are left feeling anxious, cynical, and powerless. This state of hyperreal frustration manifests in climate anxiety, performative politics, and (...) digital escapism. Yet amid this simulated landscape, Stoicism offers a grounded and actionable response—one that rejects illusion, accepts natural limits, and cultivates ethical resilience. By reorienting individuals toward clarity, virtue, and personal agency, Stoicism equips us to face ecological collapse not with despair, but with dignity. -/- The Age of Hyperreality and the Crisis of Frustration In the 21st century, humanity faces an unprecedented crisis—not only of ecology but of perception. Climate change, mass extinction, and resource depletion unfold before our eyes, yet instead of addressing these existential threats with meaningful action, societies construct elaborate illusions of progress. Governments sign climate agreements that lack enforcement mechanisms, corporations launch “sustainability” campaigns while continuing unsustainable practices and the media transforms environmental catastrophe into entertainment. These actions do not engage with reality; they simulate solutions while allowing destruction to continue unchecked. -/- Jean Baudrillard’s concept of hyperreality explains this phenomenon: in modern society, symbols and representations have replaced reality itself. Instead of confronting the material consequences of industrial capitalism, we engage with a world of signs that simulate responsibility—carbon offset programs, “green” products, political rhetoric about a “sustainable future.” Yet the natural world does not operate within simulation. James Lovelock’s `Gaia Hypothesis` suggests that Earth functions as a self-regulating system, indifferent to human illusions. No matter how much we manipulate perception, Gaia responds in real biological and geophysical terms—rising temperatures, collapsing ecosystems, and increasingly severe natural disasters. -/- This gap between illusion and reality fuels a growing sense of frustration. People recognize that something is wrong, but they are trapped within a system that offers only symbolic solutions. Climate anxiety, political cynicism, and existential despair are symptoms of this dissonance. This essay argues that Stoicism offers a way to navigate the crisis. Unlike hyperreality, which encourages denial and distraction, Stoicism demands an embrace of reality as it is. By rejecting illusion, accepting natural limits, and cultivating inner resilience, Stoicism provides an ethical and psychological framework for confronting ecological collapse without despair. This book is inspired by a German theoretical physicist, Sabine Hossenfelder’s publication: “Lost in Mathematics”. Her book seems to question highly mathematical and a lot of abstraction in the development of physics and cosmology studies nowadays. There is clear tendency that in recent decades, the physics science has been predominated by such an advanced mathematics, which at times sounding more like acrobatics approach to a reality. Through books by senior mathematical-physicists like Unzicker and Peter Woit, we know that the answer (...) of TOE is not in superstring theories or other variations of such 26 dimensional bosonic string theory, of which none of those theories survived experimental test, but perhaps in low dimensional physics. As Alexander Unzicker suggests, perhaps it is more advisable to consider rotation in 3D space (known as SO3), or a kind of superfluid vortices version of gravitation theory. We can also reconsider proposition by the late Prof F. Winterberg (formerly professor at Univ. Nevada, Reno), that it is most likely that superfluid phonon roton theory in 3D can replace the entire superstring theories. While we don’t explore yet implications of his model to particle physics, we discuss here some published papers at several journals in the past few years. (shrink)

Based on a careful reading of Michael Marder’s book Plant-Thinking and a recent 2020 article by Michael Marder, this essay argues it is necessary to establish a differentiation between what is called plant and vegetal. Through and beyond the form of the plant there would be a time and a vegetal metabolism whose proper name is “we.” “We” as a denomination of the vegetal implies a conceptual transformation, but also an answer to the question of who “we” are. Who are (...) we now when, as Dipesh Chakrabarty asserts, our “we” no longer has any “ontological dimension”? While Chakrabarty answers the question of the “we” by answering that “we” are “a geophysical force,” I propose, following Marder, that the answer is: we are vegetality. (shrink)

Abstract -/- Quetico’s ecosystem functions as a dynamically emergent resonance system rather than a static equilibrium. Its biodiversity is governed by a complex interplay of interacting sub-resonances, including lichen, trees, fish, fungi, and hydrodynamic cycles. This paper proposes a falsifiable, systems-level model of Earth–Moon phase coupling during the Eocene–Oligocene boundary (~33–29 MYA), reframing lunar volcanism and terrestrial extinction not as separate events, but as manifestations of structured resonance. Using the CODES (Chirality of Dynamic Emergent Systems) framework, we introduce the concept of Coherent Phase Resonance (CPR)—periodic intervals during which planetary systems enter phase-locked states, generating synchronized geophysical and biospheric reorganizations. We outline a four-domain coherence scoring protocol and propose an experiment using DIMPLE lunar samples and (...) terrestrial stratigraphic archives. In contemporary mathematics, a Colombeau algebra of Colombeau generalized functions is an algebra of a certain kind containing the space of Schwartz distributions. While in classical distribution theory a general multiplication of distributions is not possible, Colombeau algebras provide a rigorous framework for this. Remark 1.1.1.Such a multiplication of distributions has been a long time mistakenly believed to be impossible because of Schwartz’ impossibility result, which basically states that there cannot be a differential algebra containing the space of distributions and (...) preserving the product of continuous functions. However, if one only wants to preserve the product of smooth functions instead such a construction becomes possible, as demonstrated first by J.F.Colombeau [1],[2]. As a mathematical tool, Colombeau algebras can be said to combine a treatment of singularities, differentiation and nonlinear operations in one framework, lifting the limitations of distribution theory. These algebras have found numerous applications in the fields of partial differential equations, geophysics, microlocal analysis and general relativity so far. (shrink)

There are many parts of science in which a certain sort of underdetermination of theory by evidence is known to be common. It is argued that reflection on this fact should serve to shift the burden of proof from scientific anti-realists to scientific realists at a crucial point in the debate between them.

The paper points out two levels of meaning of the term anthropocene, which is directly related to the human impact on the state of the global ecosystem. This influence is reflected on the one hand in the field of natural sciences, where the term anthropocene denotes a new stage in the geological history of the Earth. On the other hand, in the field of humanities, the concept of anthropocene has become the starting point for theoretical analyzes of the direct relationship (...) between the environmental assumptions of the existence of civilization and human action, the consequences of which threaten these assumptions. In both approaches, man is considered to be the direct cause of changes in the Earth‘s ecosystem. The paper points out the importance of interconection of the both two levels of meaning of the term anthropocene. (shrink)

Geoscience research may upset people even though it is ethically acceptable. In this paper we attempt to explore three questions about such research. It will turn out that (1) under most circumstances ethical but upsetting geoscience research is morally permissible, (2) revising this research in response to upset-induced external interference is morally impermissible in the absence of strong countervailing pragmatic reasons and attempts to reduce upset, and (3) potentially upsetting geoscience research ought to be communicated truthfully and tailored to each (...) individual situation. These general propositions are applied to a case of ethical but upsetting research that we ourselves are currently involved. (shrink)
