Kingfishers are a family, the Alcedinidae, of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania, but also can be seen in Europe.

Recently, we have been trying to find out how to innovate our research method. For an analytical approach like BMF, it is even more difficult as BMF is the product of a many-year process of deliberate designing and optimizing. Fortunately, such innovation has appeared through the fictional details of The Kingfisher Story Collection, which gave birth to a subsequent series of innovations in working cultures, philosophies, principles, theories, methodology, and practices of the AISDL team. However, one important question remained: (...) What is the true meaning of Kingfisher? Why do we have so deep a connection to it? At first, we thought the Collection’s embedded humor and freedom of thought were the reasons. The fable book The Kingfisher Story Collection shows that Mr. Kingfisher is an avid traveler. However, due to unfavorable conditions, his dream of a long-distance journey became a challenging ordeal. Since 2016, Mr. Kingfisher had been yearning for this trip, but it wasn’t until recently that he was able to board the CSIRO/AOS ship to Australia for a long-haul trip. The minimal sense of humor and satire in storytelling of Wild Wise Weird are sure to bring readers smiles, better yet, moments of quiet reflection, a much under-appreciated remedy in the world driven almost insane with the abundance of information co-created with AI technologies. I hope to deliver justice to the book.

Following the joint efforts by participants in the VIASM-HANU BMF Class, part of the Conference on Innovations of Mathematics Teaching in Social Sciences co-organized by the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM) and Hanoi University (HANU) in early November 2023, a joint manuscript was submitted to the VMOST Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. -/- The peer review process was successfully completed in February, and the paper was officially published today (see the screenshot below).

A few days ago, I received the acceptance decision for the paper titled “Kingfisher: Contemplating the connection between nature and humans through science, art, literature, and lived experiences”. I consider this paper my best-written article of 2023, so my feeling of happiness was immeasurable when I knew it got accepted. Coincidentally, a book by my co-author, Prof. Vuong, which is one of our inspirations to write this paper, also became Amazon Japan’s best seller in the category of humanist philosophy. (...) I have been so impressed by the way that the main character, Kingfisher, is charted throughout the whole book. His interactions with other characters in each story carry valuable lessons in real, human life.

When you type the word “serendipity” in a word-processor application such as Microsoft Word, the autocorrection engine suggests you choose other words like “luck” or “fate”. This correcting act turns out to be incorrect. However, it points to the reality that serendipity is not a familiar English word and can be misunderstood easily. Serendipity is a very much scientific concept as it has been found useful in numerous scientific discoveries, pharmaceutical innovations, and numerous humankind’s technical and technological advances. Therefore, there (...) have been many books written around the concept. So why do we need this additional book? This is not just another book about serendipity. It has evolved from the Editor’s question lingering for a decade after finishing his widely cited article (coauthored with Prof. Nancy K. Napier of Boise State University, ID, USA) “Serendipity as a strategic advantage?” in T. Wilkinson’s edited volume Strategic Management in the 21st Century, published by Praeger. The Editor and contributing authors have tried to achieve the following in this title. Demystifying the Serendipity Myth The phenomenon of serendipity has always been thought of as a “miracle”. It is the mystery of human innovation and one of the ultimate secrets of our society. But serendipity is not just a lucky coincidence nor any hidden conspiracy. This book explores the science of the information process behind this seemingly miraculous phenomenon. It connects human society with nature, going back to the root of our existence and looking at the flame of survival to discover the harmony in making creativity. Hello World! I am Young Mantis. I was born in a village, called the Jute Plant Village, near the Bird Village. The photo of mine was taken by Kingfisher the Wise of the Bird Village, showing me while just 3 days old. That’s why I looked very tiny, even when compared to a newborn leave of the jute plant where I was clinging. My friendship with Kingfisher the Wise has developed over time, going through a roller coaster ride, (...) thus, complicated. But we are still friends today. I absolutely loved The Kingfisher Story Collection by Quan-Hoang Vuong. This book is such a unique and delightful blend of humor, wisdom, and cultural insight. The stories take you into a whimsical bird village, where the wise Kingfisher and his friends teach valuable life lessons through their adventures.

The narrative’s conception came from a real-world story intended for Meandering Sobriety. Then, it was rewritten in Vietnamese in mid-September 2023, with its original title being “Love’s Dream of Kingfisher and the Joy of Awakening”. This English version will be included in the next edition (3th) of The Kingfisher Story Collection.
