In recent years, a number of commentators have expressed dissatisfaction with Spinoza’s account of practical reason. In this paper, I defend his account against the most prominent objections, showing that the dictates of reason play an important role in guiding thought and action. However, against the standard interpretation, I propose that we view these rules not as exceptionless, instrumental prescriptions—hypothetical imperatives with necessary antecedents, as Curley memorable put it—but rather as adaptable guideposts that aid us in the complex, dynamic process (...)

  4. Giordano Bruno. Due Orazioni. Oratio valedictoria - Oratio consolatoria. [REVIEW]Gerardo Picardo - 2007 - ADNKronos 2:2-3.

Regarding the influence of Francois Rabelais on the Giordano Bruno’s works, up to now the criticism have only taken into consideration the lexical and thematic analogies. This article individualizes, in a passage of the "Oratio Valedictoria", a literal quotation from the Gargantua et Pantagruel , showing that Rabelais was adirect source of inspiration for Bruno. The protagonist of the passage is the pythagorean Apollonius of Tyana, a character well known from the Nolan, who mentioned him in many occasions. He (...)

Vicente Medina - 2020 - Inter-American Journal of Philosophy 11 (2):17-34.

  8. (1 other version)Agrippa von Nettesheim´s influence on Sebastian Franck.Gerhard Lechner - manuscript
Sebastian Franck commented and translated parts of Agrippa´s De Vanitate Scientiarum, confirming that Franck knew at least some of this philosopher’s work. However, there is no detailed research on the influence Agrippa had on Franck—a gap this paper tries to fill. In a paper of Keefer, the author advocates that Franck was much influenced by Agrippa. The major claim of this paper is that Agrippa’s influence on Franck should not be overestimated, primarily because Franck deliberately did not cite from the (...)

Raccolti da Stefano Caroti e Alberto Siclari. Firenze-Parma, Torino: E-theca OnLineOpenAccess Edizioni, Università degli Studi di Torino. pp. 28-58.
The theology of Pier Damiani († 1072) is still an understudied theme in his scholarship, in particular, for what it concerns his Trinitarian and Christological doctrines. The aim of this study is to reconstruct and discuss especially Damiani’s Christological views as formulated in Letter 81, better known as his De fide catholica. It is argued that Damiani’s approach is mostly exegetical, as he mainly points to and comments on Biblical passages in support of Catholic doctrines. Still, he assumes a peculiar (...)

  10. Von Hildebrand and his vision of affectivity: A path to ethics?Carlos Alberto Rosas Jiménez - 2013 - Escritos 21 (47):419-432.
In a world in which emotions and feelings occupy a dominant place in daily human life and especially in decision-making circumstances, it is important for us to ask ourselves whether it is possible to talk about “new” ethics or “renewed ethics.” Actually, we do not face a re-creation of principles and values, but rather we face a need for deepening our understanding of human anthropology. Thinkers such as Dietrich von Hildebrand have proposed that affectivity can shed light on ethics comprehension. (...)

In assuming his post of Professor of Philosophy at the University of Franeker, Ruardus Andala expounded in his Oratio inauguralis de physicae praestantia, utilitate et iucunditate (1701) his aim to replace Scholastic-Aristotelian philosophy with more recent philosophical and scientific theories as the rational foundation of theology. In this paper, Andala’s program is reconstructed by taking into account his later works, where he abandoned his former predilection for Jean Leclerc’s Physica (1696), replacing it with René Descartes’s Principia philosophiae (1644), complemented (...)
