This article asks whether our moral duties are created by others’ non-compliance and whether we should fulfill them or not. For example, do we need to donate more of our income to eradicate world poverty because billionaires do not donate? If so, how much should we donate? In short, should we make up for others’ defaulting on their moral duties – and if so, how and to what extent? Such situations are called non-ideal circumstances in political philosophy. With the increasing (...) importance of non-ideal theories of justice and ethics, the question of how we should act in non-ideal situations has received more attention in the ethics literature in recent years. This article poses and addresses the question of whether we should take up the slack when others do not comply with their own moral duty. This article examines how consequentialism and contractualism might respond to non-ideal situations of taking up the slack and then defends a contractualist-constructivist approach to dealing with these situations. The essay discusses the religious and ethical message of Shusaku Endo’s Silence. Briefly focusing first on the plot of the novel, the article proceeds to discuss the moral dilemma that is the core of the novel and asks whether the dilemma is symmetrical or incommensurable. Next, the essay analyzes the dilemma from the point of view of Max Scheler’s theory of the tragic. Finally, to highlight Rodrigues’s tragic situation, it discusses the notion of the hiddenness of God.

On 26 July 2016, Satoshi Uematsu murdered 19 and injured 26 at a caregiving facility in Sagamihara, Japan, making it the country’s worst mass killing since WWII. In this article, I offer an analysis of the Sagamihara 19 massacre. I draw on the work of Julia Kristeva and Emmanuel Levinas to argue that claims about disability experience are insufficient to justify normative projects. In short, disability is normatively ambiguous.

In the bitcoin whitepaper, Satoshi Nakamoto (2008: 2) defines an electronic coin as a chain of digital signatures. Many have since defined a bitcoin as a chain of digital signatures. This latter definition continues to appear in reports from central banks, advocacy centers, and governments, as well as in academic papers across the disciplines of law, economics, computer science, cryptography, management, and philosophy. Some have even used it to argue that what we now call bitcoin is not the real (...) bitcoin. The definition fails, however. This is important because the Chain Definition obscures Satoshi’s solution to a dilemma in the design of electronic cash, as well as the truth about bitcoin’s privacy and fungibility. In this article, I explain why the Chain Definition fails and what Satoshi likely endorsed instead. Along the way, I untangle some issues around bitcoin fungibility and clarify some others around the ontology of digital assets. (shrink)

En décadas recientes se ha considerado que una formulación adecuada del autoconocimiento (AC) debería ser consistente con la tesis del externalismo (E). Michael McKinsey es uno de los personajes que ha enfatizado con mayor ahínco que la conjunción de ambas posturas es inconsistente. En este trabajo defiendo la idea de que las objeciones presentadas por McKinsey no afectan de manera importante la formulación davidsoniana de la autoridad de la primera persona (AC3) en conjunción con (E); señalo, además, que si no (...) pudiera hacerse una reconstrucción à la Davidson de (AC3) desde la postura de McKinsey sería en virtud de las diferencias metodológicas, semánticas, epistemológicas y ontológicas entre ambos autores, y no debido a que esta reconstrucción en sí misma sea incompatible con el externalismo. Exactly how do the sign/symbol/token systems of endo- and exo-biosemiosis differ from those of cognitive semiosis? Do the biological messages that integrate metabolism have conceptual meaning? Semantic information has two subsets: Descriptive and Prescriptive. Prescriptive information instructs or directly produces nontrivial function. In cognitive semiosis, prescriptive information requires anticipation and “choice with intent” at bona fide decision nodes. Prescriptive information either tells us what choices to make, or it is a recordation of wise choices already made. Symbol systems allow (...) recordation of deliberate choices and the transmission of linear digital prescriptive information. Formal symbol selection can be instantiated into physicality using physical symbol vehicles (tokens). Material symbol systems (MSS) formally assign representational meaning to physical objects. Even verbal semiosis instantiates meaning into physical sound waves using an MSS. Formal function can also be incorporated into physicality through the use of dynamically-inert (dynamically-incoherent or -decoupled) configurable switch-settings in conceptual circuits. U ovom tekstu želim reüi nešto više o povezanosti ovih kognitivnih aspekata znanja i razumijevanja sa načinom na koji se tretira struktura objekta znanja u konstituiranju znanja i razumijevanja, odnosno identifikacije egzo-sistema i njihove endo-reprezentacije, unutar tri tipa racionalne konstrukcije: u klasičnom / ontološkom, u analitičkom / semantičkom i sistemskom / računarskom tipu identifikacije i reprezentacije.

OBJETIVO Com essa unidade, o objetivo é apresentar o funcionamento do sistema endócrino e o controle que ele exerce sobre os processos reprodutivos. Logo, o estudante com-preenderá que os processos endócrinos de um organismo não podem estar dissociados do que ocorre com o restante do organismo nem das alterações do entorno. Por essa razão, o sistema endócrino e o sistema nervoso se comunicam entre si, formando em seu conjunto o sistema neuroendócrino. Sendo assim, o intuito desse trabalho é descrever as (...) funções dos órgãos endó-crinos mais importantes relacionados a reprodução, assim como o papel dos principais hormônios produzidos em cada um desses. INTRODUÇÃO Os processos reprodutivos requerem uma estreita coordenação entre diferentes ór-gãos do aparelho reprodutivo, além de estarem acompanhados por mudanças metabólicas que permitem a adaptação do animal aos requerimentos de cada etapa dos processos que nele realizam-se. A reprodução deve ser capaz de responder ou ajustar-se as condições externas, como a época do ano, a disponibilidade de nutrientes, além da presença ou au-sência de animais do sexo oposto. Essa coordenação e adaptação são alcançados graças a comunicação endócrina entre diversas células e órgãos. HIPOTÁLAMO O hipotálamo é um órgão central do sistema neuroendócrino. Está constituído por uma região do sistema nervoso central estrategicamente localizado para receber informa-ção de todos os órgãos dos sentidos; direta ou indiretamente recebe projeções provenien-tes da retina, dos bulbos olfatórios primários e secundários, o ouvido, a pele e os órgãos internos. Ademais, o hipotálamo possui receptores hormonais, receptores para substân-cias como a glicose e os ácidos graxos, barorreceptores para registrar a pressão sanguínea, e os termo-receptores para a temperatura corporal. Pode-se afirmar que o hipotálamo conhece o que está acontecendo dentro e fora do organismo, e consequentemente encontra-se em uma posição específica para tomar decisões transcendentais na vida do animal. Além disso, o hipotálamo regula funções vitais como a fome, a sede e o sono. Também é um órgão encarregado de regular uma função que é essencial para a sobrevivência de qualquer espécie que nada mais é do que a reprodução e a perpetuação da espécie. Apesar de sua grande importância, o hipotálamo representa uma pequena porcen-tagem de massa encefálica. É constituído por núcleos que são grupamentos de neurônios especializados. A maioria dos núcleos são bilaterais, situados um de cada lado do tercer ventrículo que é uma cavidade pequena que contém líquido cerebrospinal que ocupa o centro do hipotálamo. Em alguns casos os neurônios estão mais dispersos, ao qual em lugar de se denominar núcleos se alcunha de áreas hipotalâmicas (figura 1). Continua... (shrink)
