In this paper, I defend the metalinguistic solution to the problem of mathematical omniscience for the possible-worlds account of propositions by combining it with a computational model of knowledge and belief. The metalinguistic solution states that the objects of belief and ignorance in mathematics are relations between mathematical sentences and what they express. The most pressing problem for the metalinguistic strategy is that it still ascribes too much mathematical knowledge under the standard possible-worlds model of knowledge and belief on which (...) these are closed under entailment. I first argue that Stalnaker's fragmentation strategy is insufficient to solve this problem. I then develop an alternative, computational strategy: I propose a model of mathematical knowledge and belief adapted from the algorithmic model of Halpern et al. which, when combined with the metalinguistic strategy, entails that mathematical knowledge and belief require computational abilities to access metalinguistic information, and thus aren't closed under entailment. As I explain, the computational model generalizes beyond mathematics to a version of the functionalist theory of knowledge and belief that motivates the possible-worlds account in the first place. I conclude that the metalinguistic and computational strategies yield an attractive functionalist, possible-worlds account of mathematical content, knowledge, and inquiry. (shrink)

In order to fulfill their role in society, professional journalists must deliver truths. But truth-telling is not the only requirement of the goal of journalism. What is more, some of the other requirements of journalism can make it difficult for journalists to deliver truths, and may even force them to depart from truth in certain ways. In this paper, I make the requirements of the goal of journalism explicit, and I explain how conflicts between them can arise. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and appropriateness of colistin therapy in patients with hematological malignancies. -/- Methods: Age, gender, type of hematologic malignancy, and potential carbapenem-resistant microorganism risk factors were all noted in this retrospective study. In empirical and agent-specific treatment groups, differences in demographic features, risk factors, treatment responses, and side effects were compared. -/- Results: Sixty-three patients were included, 54% were male, and the median age was 49. In the last three (...) months, the hospitalization rate history was 68%, and four patients had a hospitalization history in the ICU. Carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae colonization was present in 22 patients (35%). Gram-negative microorganisms were isolated in 34 patients (54%). The carbapenem, quinolone, and colistin resistance rates were 82%, 76%, and 4% respectively. Clinical and microbiological response rates were 60% and 69%. 7 and 28-day mortality rates were 17% and 35%. There was no significant difference in demographic data and comorbidities in empirical (n=48) and agent-specific (n=15) treatment groups. The rate of carbapenem and glycopeptide treatments before colistin was higher in the empirical treatment group (p = 0.004; p = 0.001). The rate of starting combined antibiotics was higher in the empirical treatment group (p = 0.016). Two of the patients developed renal failure in the first week after treatment. -/- Conclusion: The use of empirical colistin may be unavoidable given the risk considerations. Shortly, colistin-resistant strains may also be a factor affecting treatment success negatively. (shrink)

This article pinpoints two lacunae – freedom and the subject of action – in post-structuralist epistemology and proposes to rethink agency through Hannah Arendt’s theory of action. It is argued that, given the sense of disorientation in theoretical and political practices, it is all the more important to re-conceptualize the singularity or uniqueness of agents as initiators of social change.

Objective: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common autoimmune thyroid disease. Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common thyroid cancer. Whether Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a predisposing factor for papillary thyroid cancer remains unclear. In this study, the frequency of papillary thyroid cancer was investigated in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis who underwent total thyroidectomy. -/- Methods: In this study, 534 patients were screened retrospectively. Preoperative thyroid function tests, anti-thyroid antibodies, ultrasonography findings, fine-needle aspiration biopsies, and thyroidectomy pathology results were examined. According to (...) the pathology, 139 patients had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (group 1) and non-Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (group 2) were compared. -/- Results: Papillary thyroid cancer was found in 70 patients (50.4%) in group 1 and 156 patients (39.5%) in group 2 (P=.026). The odds ratio was 1.59 (95% CI; 1.07-2.34). There was no difference for sex, age, tumor size, microcarcinoma–macrocarcinoma distribution, subtype, number of tumor focus, lymph node metastasis, vessel invasion, and extrathyroidal spread. -/- Conclusion: We found more papillary thyroid cancer and less capsular invasion in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, but we did not find any differences between groups in terms of age, gender, tumor size, vascular invasion, and metastasis. According to these findings, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may be a risk factor for papillary thyroid cancer. (shrink)

In this paper, we offer a novel defense of descriptivism about reference. Our argument is based on principles about the relevance of speaker intentions to reference that are shared by many opponents of descriptivism, including Saul Kripke. We first show that two such principles that are plausibly endorsed by Kripke and other prominent externalists in fact entail descriptivism. The first principle states that when certain kinds of speaker intentions are present, they suffice to determine and explain reference. According to the (...) second principle, certain speaker intentions must be present whenever something determines or explains reference. We then go on to make these principles more precise and argue that it would be costly to deny either of them. Since on the more precise understanding we suggest, the conjunction of these principles still entails descriptivism, we conclude that opponents of descriptivism have to give up some highly plausible assumption about the relation between speaker intentions and reference. How could we go beyond the conventional categorization of the five senses and find out a sixth sense in the observation of a building? Let’s call such a sense atmospheric one. Humans are rooted in the atmosphere, generated by things and space, just as the roots of plants in the soil. To observe novel experiences, we aimed to prioritize the atmosphere and affective encounters in space. First, archive photographs and technical drawings were compiled and examined, parallel with the historical evaluation (...) of the building (Eskişehir Esnaf Sarayı) and its context. However, this reading was not only about the mere transfer of archive data but also their affective engagements of them. Further, the atmosphere and its affects were unveiled through the inherent (and personal) experiences of the space. (shrink)

In light of the problem of logical omniscience, some scholars have argued that belief is question-sensitive: agents don't simply believe propositions but rather believe answers to questions. Hoek (2022) has recently developed a version of this approach on which a belief state is a "web" of questions and answers. Here, we present several challenges to Hoek's question-sensitive account of belief. First, Hoek's account is prone to very similar logical omniscience problems as those he claims to address. This paper explores the implications of Zeynep Tufekci’s capacities approach to social movements, which explains the strength of social movements in terms of their capacities. Tufekci emphasises that the capacities of contemporary social movements largely depend upon their uses of new digital technologies, and of social media in particular. We show that Tufekci’s approach has important implications for the structure of social movements, whether and what obligations they can have, and for how these obligations distribute to their members. In (...) exploring these implications, we develop a tripartite taxonomy of social movements. Each type of social movement in the taxonomy corresponds to a different type of group: social campaigns, social struggles, and social agitations. We show that all three types of social movement can bear obligations in virtue of their capacities. Finally, we argue that a surprising upshot of the obligations of social movements is that members of oppressed groups can have obligations to resist their own oppression in virtue of being members of social movements.
