    Jarrett Leplin has recently criticized a number of aspects of my views of the aims and goals of science, of the rationale of scientific change, and of the consequent relations between science and the philosophy of science, and in particular of the methodology of the latter (Leplin 1984, 1987, 1988a, 1988b).     I propose to support these replies with actual episodes in late nineteenth and twentieth century physics. The historical record reveals that meaning does change but not in the Kuhnian manner which is tied to descriptive theories of meaning. A necessary part of this discussion is commentary on realist versus antirealist conceptions of science.

    The alleged problem of "incommensurability" is examined, and attempts to explain scientific change in terms of concepts of meaning and reference are analyzed and rejected.     This paper defends the Causal Theory of Reference against the recent criticism that it imposes a priori constraints on the aims and practices of science. (1988), Jarrett Leplin claims that I do not have sufficient grounds for rejecting the customary "philosophical method of discovery" that allows for the direct transfer of theories developed in the philosophy of language to science. Esitän yleistetyn Kaksoismaa-argumentin ja ehdotan, että lewislainen vastinyksilöteoria sovellettuna luonnollisiin lajeihin selittää muiden yksilöintikriteerien empiirisen mahdollisuuden. Kaiken kaikkiaan tämä viittaa siihen, että luonnollisilla lajeilla ei ole kiinnostavaa metafyysistä asemaa.
