In Paradox in Christian Theology I argued that the Christian doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation are paradoxical—that is, they appear to involve implicit contradictions—yet Christians can still be rational in affirming and believing those doctrines. How is the debate between endurantism and perdurantism affected by the transition from prerelativistic spacetimes to relativistic ones? After suggesting that the endurance vs. perdurance distinction may run together a pair of crosscutting distinctions, I discuss two recent attempts to show that the transition in question does serious damage to endurantism.

I discuss how modern cosmology illustrates underdetermination of theoretical hypotheses by data, in ways that are different from most philosophical discussions. I confine the discussion to the history of the observable universe from about one second after the Big Bang, as described by the mainstream cosmological model: in effect, what cosmologists in the early 1970s dubbed the ‘standard model’, as elaborated since then. Quantum gravity is understood as a theory that, in some sense, unifies general relativity (GR) and quantum theory, and is supposed to replace GR at extremely small distances (highenergies). It may be that quantum gravity represents the breakdown of spacetime geometry described by GR.
