In this dissertation, I argue that writing philosophical texts is a self-constituting activity as well as a meaning-producing activity and that both activities are gender-informed. To do this I develop an interpretive framework based on some philosophical and psychoanalytic theories of self viewed from a feminist perspective. The philosophical theories provide the background and context for a closer examination of a Lacanian theory of self. The latter is then critiqued and revised in light of object relations theory and feminist perspectives (...) on psychoanalysis . I then apply this interpretive framework to specific texts of three philosophers . I target a puzzle of interpretation presented by each of these texts. With the help of my interpretive framework I give each text a "gender-sensitive" reading that resolves the puzzle in an illuminating way. ;Each text demonstrates what I term a variation in male positioning with its own version of a gender barrier that precludes certain solutions to problems presented by the text. By exploring constraints presented by the need to maintain a particular version of male positioning, I provide an internal critique of what we might call a "masculinist" perspective. Such a critique, by calling attention to the inherent limitations of three examples of male positioning, motivates an expansion of that perspective to incorporate other points of view. I thus hope to demonstrate some ways in which gender categories inform philosophical "truths" and to motivate further work on the effects of gender in philosophical texts. Such work could clarify problems in self-constituting activity presented by the need to maintain a particular gender identity, and possibly suggest avenues for solutions to philosophical problems that would involve deconstructing gender categories entirely. This book offers a systematic attempt to explore the point of convergance between feminist theory and the work of Michel Foucault.

Contemporary feminist theory is at an impasse: the project of reformulating concepts of self and social identity is thwarted by an association between identity and oppression and victimhood. In Sacrificial Logics, Allison Weir proposes a way out of this impasse through a concept of identity which depends on accepting difference. Weir argues that the equation of identity with repression and domination links "relational" feminists like Nancy Chodorow, who equate self-identity with the repression of connection to others, and poststructuralist feminists like (...) Judith Butler, who view any identity as a repression of nonidentity and difference. Through readings of Chodorow, Butler, Jessica Benjamin, Luce Irigaray, Jacqueline Rose and Julia Kristeva, Weir analyzes the relation of theories of self-identity to theories of women's identity, social identity, the identity of meaning in language and feminist solidarity. Drawing particularly on the work of Julia Kristeva, she argues for a reformulation of self-identity as a capacity to participate in a social world, and sketches a model of a self-identity which depends on a capacity to accept nonidentity, difference and connections to others. She taught creative writing, Chicano studies, and feminist studies at University of Texas, San Francisco State University, Vermont College of Norwich University, and University of California Santa Cruz. Anzaldúa passed away in 2004 and was honored around the world for shedding visionary light on the Chicana experience by receiving the National Association for Chicano Studies Scholar Award in 2005. Gloria was also posthumously awarded her doctoral degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. This is a book in feminist theory and social and political philosophy. Many of the chapters are versions of earlier papers published as journal articles and as book chapters. It presents a multi-systems theory of social domination, discussing three main ones: economic class, gender and (social) race. It presents a maerialist feminist theory of gender and sexuality and discusses lesbian identity as well as issues of motherhood.

This is a book on feminist theory from a socialist-feminist (materialist feminist) perspective. I categorize existing paradigms of Western feminist theory in the 1980s and contrast them with my own view, which adds to a critique of capitalism inspired by Marxism another system in which male domination persists, which I call the system of "sex-affective production" (inspired but going beyond Freud, Foucault and Deleuze and Guattari). I also discuss motherhood and sexuality using my paradigm personally, politically and philosophically.
