On 23 September 2002, the Belgian law on euthanasia came into force. This makes Belgium the second country in the world to have an Act on euthanasia. Even though there is currently legal regulation of euthanasia in Belgium, very little is known about how this legal regulation could be translated into care for patients who request euthanasia.

The Roman Catholic theological approach to euthanasia is radically prohibitive. The main theological argument for this prohibition is the so-called “stewardship argument”: Christians cannot escape accounting to God for stewardship of the bodies given them on earth. This contribution presents an alternative approach based on European existentialist and philosophical traditions. The suggestion is that exploring the fullness of our relational responsibility is more apt for a pluralist – and even secular – debate on the legitimacy of euthanasia.

Immediately following the approval of the Belgian law on euthanasia, Caritas Catholica Vlaanderen sent a position paper to all affiliated institutions in which its standpoint regarding care for a dignified end of life is clarified. We would like to sketch very briefly the context in which this position paper should be placed, before reproducing the complete text of the recommendation.Caritas Catholica Vlaanderen is an umbrella organization for cooperation and consultation between the Verbond der Verzorgingsinstellingen [Association of Care Institutions], grouping health-care (...) institutions and services, and the Vlaams Welzijnsverbond [Flemish Association for Public Welfare], grouping welfare institutions and services. The Verbond der Verzorgingsinstellingen is responsible for 52 general hospitals, 94 mental-health institutions and 326 geriatric-care institutions. This book highlights both the relation between technology and care, and the normative aspects of economic analyses in health care. A series of concrete examples from various clinical fields (prenatal diagnosis, genetic tests, digital imaging in psychiatry, tube feeding in care for the elderly, and palliative sedation) helps the authors to consider how to integrate these technologies in a care context aimed upon humaneness. Each topic is analysed by leading European clinicians and health care ethicists.

Health care institutions, including Roman Catholic institutions, are in a time of crisis. This crisis may provide an important opportunity to reinvigorate Roman Catholic health care. The current health care crisis offers Roman Catholic health care institutions a special opportunity to rethink their fundamental commitments and to plan for the future. The author argues that what Catholic health care institutions must first do is articulate the nature of their identity and their commitments. By a renewed commitment to the praxis of (...) health care on their own distinctive terms, Roman Catholic health care institutions may reestablish a vision of human nature and human service in an increasingly secular society.
