John Mackie's stimulating book is a complete and clear treatise on moral theory. His writings on normative ethics-the moral principles he recommends-offer a fresh approach on a much neglected subject, and the work as a whole is undoubtedly a major contribution to modern philosophy.The author deals first with the status of ethics, arguing that there are not objective values, that morality cannot be discovered but must be made. Moral Realism is a systematic defence of the idea that there are objective moral standards. Russ Shafer-Landau argues that there are moral principles that are true independently of what anyone, anywhere, happens to think of them. His central thesis, as well as the many novel supporting arguments used to defend it, will spark much controversy among those concerned with the foundations of ethics.

The author considers the way in which psychic life is generated by the social operation of power, and how that social operation of power is concealed and fortified by the psyche that it produces. Power is no longer understood to be 'internalized' by an existing subject, but the subject is spawned as an ambivalent effect of power, one that is staged through the operation of conscience. To claim that power fabricates the psyche is also to claim that there is a (...) fictional and fabricated quality to the psyche. The figure of a psyche that 'turns against itself' is crucial to this study, and offers an alternative to describing power as 'internalized'. Although most readers of Foucault eschew psychoanalytic theory, and most thinkers of the psyche eschew Foucault, the author seeks to theorize this ambivalent relation between the social and the psychic as one of the most dynamic and difficult effects of power. While homosexuality and gay and lesbian individuals are now more visible than ever, homosexuality remains among the most stigmatized of personal identities. The disclosure of gay identity can still trigger severe discrimination and other harms; on the other hand, staying "in the closet" exacts high tolls in human happiness, dignity and integrity. This dissertation examines three related questions concerning moral norms for gay identity disclosure. First, the continuing controversy over the exclusion of acknowledged homosexuals from the military and other public (...) institutions raises the issue of whether the state or other institutions may forbid disclosures of sexual orientation. Second, demands from within the gay community that lesbians and gays "come out of the closet" raise the question of whether there is a general moral duty--either to oneself or to the community--to disclose one's homosexuality. Finally, the recent debate over the ethics of "outing"--the unwanted public disclosure of a closeted person's homosexuality--raises complicated questions about the permissibility of such disclosures by others. In various ways, these issues raise deeper questions about the nature and management of our private and public identities. ;Strategies for managing gay identity disclosures should be guided by sound moral principles. These and related questions may be addressed from one of three moral theoretical perspectives: utilitarianism, Kantian duty theory, and virtue theory. Utilitarian and Kantian approaches to gay identity disclosure are common, while virtue-based views are almost non-existent. In general, I argue that both utilitarian and deontological approaches are significantly flawed and generate implausible disclosure norms. Instead, I propose and defend a neo-Aristotelian virtue-ethics approach to disclosure norms that is sensitive to the complex and varied contexts and motivations of identity disclosure and non-disclosure, and gives appropriate moral weight to both the happiness and the intrinsic value of the individual. I argue that the right to privacy protects gay self-disclosure while ordinarily precluding outing. Further, while there is no general duty to come out, moral virtue demands progress toward the development of an effective disposition to be out, wisely integrating one's public and private identities. Contemporary liberal thinkers commonly suppose that there is something in principle unjust about the legal prohibition of putatively victimless crimes. Here Robert P. George defends the traditional justification of morals legislation against criticisms advanced by leading liberal theorists. He argues that such legislation can play a legitimate role in maintaining a moral environment conducive to virtue and inhospitable to at least some forms of vice. The paper argues that the two dominant approaches towards the moral issues surrounding outing are too weak to handle the latter’s complexity and would benefit from being made part of a broader and richer framework, namely, that of virtue ethics. One dominant approach begins by arguing that people do not have the right to privacy in matters of sexual orientation (not behaviour), and so outing gay people does not violate such a right. It con- tinues by arguing that living a (...) dignified life requires the agent to refuse to keep secret the gay sexual orientation of others. The second dominant approach, opposed to the first, argues that gay people have a right to the privacy of sexual orientation, and so outing them is prima facie wrong. Both approaches, the paper argues, are too weak to handle the complexity of outing: the first suffers from emphasizing only one subset of the virtues (dignity, pride, and so on), while the second is too weak to explain fully why in some cases outing is permissible. Virtue ethics is a much richer framework from which to address the complexity of outing. (shrink)
