  1. Handbook of Modal Logic.Patrick Blackburn, Johan van Benthem & Frank Wolter (eds.) - 2006 - Elsevier.
The Handbook of Modal Logic contains 20 articles, which collectively introduce contemporary modal logic, survey current research, and indicate the way in which the field is developing. The articles survey the field from a wide variety of perspectives: the underling theory is explored in depth, modern computational approaches are treated, and six major applications areas of modal logic (in Mathematics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Game Theory, and Philosophy) are surveyed. The book contains both well-written expository articles, suitable for beginners (...)

  • Elementary canonical formulae: extending Sahlqvist’s theorem.Valentin Goranko & Dimiter Vakarelov - 2006 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 141 (1):180-217.
We generalize and extend the class of Sahlqvist formulae in arbitrary polyadic modal languages, to the class of so called inductive formulae. To introduce them we use a representation of modal polyadic languages in a combinatorial style and thus, in particular, develop what we believe to be a better syntactic approach to elementary canonical formulae altogether. By generalizing the method of minimal valuations à la Sahlqvist–van Benthem and the topological approach of Sambin and Vaccaro we prove that all inductive formulae (...)

  • A Formalization of Set Theory Without Variables.István Németi - 1988 - American Mathematical Soc..
Completed in 1983, this work culminates nearly half a century of the late Alfred Tarski's foundational studies in logic, mathematics, and the philosophy of science. Written in collaboration with Steven Givant, the book appeals to a very broad audience, and requires only a familiarity with first-order logic. It is of great interest to logicians and mathematicians interested in the foundations of mathematics, but also to philosophers interested in logic, semantics, algebraic logic, or the methodology of the deductive sciences, and to (...)

  • Tools and techniques in modal logic.Marcus Kracht - 1999 - New York: Elsevier.
This book treats modal logic as a theory, with several subtheories, such as completeness theory, correspondence theory, duality theory and transfer theory and is intended as a course in modal logic for students who have had prior contact with modal logic and who wish to study it more deeply. It presupposes training in mathematical or logic. Very little specific knowledge is presupposed, most results which are needed are proved in this book.

  • Normal monomodal logics can simulate all others.Marcus Kracht & Frank Wolter - 1999 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 64 (1):99-138.
This paper shows that non-normal modal logics can be simulated by certain polymodal normal logics and that polymodal normal logics can be simulated by monomodal (normal) logics. Many properties of logics are shown to be reflected and preserved by such simulations. As a consequence many old and new results in modal logic can be derived in a straightforward way, sheding new light on the power of normal monomodal logic.

  • Modal Logics That Need Very Large Frames.Marcus Kracht - 1999 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 40 (2):141-173.
The Kuznetsov-Index of a modal logic is the least cardinal such that any consistent formula has a Kripke-model of size if it has a Kripke-model at all. The Kuznetsov-Spectrum is the set of all Kuznetsov-Indices of modal logics with countably many operators. It has been shown by Thomason that there are tense logics with Kuznetsov-Index . Futhermore, Chagrov has constructed an extension of K4 with Kuznetsov-Index . We will show here that for each countable ordinal there are logics with Kuznetsov-Index (...)

  • Completeness and decidability of tense logics closely related to logics above K.Frank Wolter - 1997 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 62 (1):131-158.
Tense logics formulated in the bimodal propositional language are investigated with respect to Kripke-completeness (completeness) and decidability. It is proved that all minimal tense extensions of modal logics of finite width (in the sense of K. Kine) as well as all minimal tense extensions of cofinal subframe logics (in the sense of M. Zakharyaschev) are complete. The decidability of all finitely axiomatizable minimal tense extensions of cofinal subframe logics is shown. A number of variations and extensions of these results are (...)

  • Erdős graphs resolve fine's canonicity problem.Robert Goldblatt, Ian Hodkinson & Yde Venema - 2004 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 10 (2):186-208.
We show that there exist 2 ℵ 0 equational classes of Boolean algebras with operators that are not generated by the complex algebras of any first-order definable class of relational structures. Using a variant of this construction, we resolve a long-standing question of Fine, by exhibiting a bimodal logic that is valid in its canonical frames, but is not sound and complete for any first-order definable class of Kripke frames (a monomodal example can then be obtained using simulation results of (...)

  • Some admissible rules in nonnormal modal systems.Timothy Williamson - 1993 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 34 (3):378-400.
Epistemic logics for subjects of bounded rationality are in effect nonnormal modal logics. Admissible rules are of interest in such logics. However, the usual methods for establishing admissibility employ Kripke models and are therefore inappropriate for nonnormal logics. This paper extends syntactic methods for a variety of rules and nonnormal logics. In doing so it answers a question asked by Chellas and Segerberg.
