  • Global Modernities.Mike Featherstone, Scott Lash & Roland Robertson (eds.) - 1995 - Sage Publications.
Global Modernities is a sustained commentary on the international character of the most microcosmic practices. It demonstrates how the global increasingly informs the regional, so deconstructing ideas like the `nation-state' and `national sovereignty'. The spatialization of social theory, hybridization and bio-politics are among the critical issues discussed.

  • Playing with environmental stories in the news — good or bad practice?Helen Caple & Monika Bednarek - 2010 - Discourse and Communication 4 (1):5-31.
The aim of this article is to analyse environmental reporting in the Australian broadsheet newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald. The focus is on a particular kind of new, multisemiotic news story genre that appears regularly in this newspaper, and that makes use of word-image play. Using a social semiotic framework and employing Appraisal theory, we analyse a corpus of 40 stories in terms of evaluative meanings in heading, image and caption, and interpret the significance of our findings in terms of (...)

  • ""Images of" good English" in the Korean conservative press Three processes of interdiscursivity.Joseph Sung-Yul Park - 2010 - Pragmatics and Society 1 (2):189-208.
In South Korea, English as a symbolic resource frequently mediates relations of class, privilege, and authority, and the Korean media play a significant role in the negotiation of the place and meaning of English in the country. This paper identifies interdiscursivity as an important semiotic mechanism for this process, and illustrates this through texts of the conservative print media which rationalize the privileges of Korean elites by representing them as successful learners of English. This paper identifies three distinct yet interrelated (...)

  • Intertextuality, mediation, and members' categories in focus groups on humor.Toshiaki Furukawa - 2010 - Pragmatics and Society 1 (2):257-283.
This paper extends studies on intertextuality into a more explicitly interactional context. I examine the actual process of intertextuality where comedy audiences construct recombinant selves through making sense of various membership categories as well as through making sense of a certain kind of comedy. The examination of this process requires receptive research; however, most studies leave the interpretive process unanalyzed. Conducting both a sequential analysis and a membership categorization analysis will reveal that categories are not “pre-formed” but “per-formed” in situ. (...)

  • The multimodal construction of the identity of politicians: Constructing Jacob zuma through prior texts, prior discourses and multiple modes.Marcelyn Oostendorp - 2015 - Critical Discourse Studies 12 (1):39-56.
This paper will use the theoretical concepts of ‘intertextuality’, ‘interdiscursivity’ and ‘resemiotization’ to analyse four media texts on South African president, Jacob Zuma. The aims of the paper are, first, to analyse the role that intertextual references play in the construction of the identity of public figures. Second, the paper investigates the semiotic affordances of the visual and linguistic mode by tracing how previous discourses and texts about Jacob Zuma move across discursive spaces and modes. The findings suggest that reference (...)
