  1. Does reflexivity separate the human sciences from the natural sciences?Roger Smith - 2005 - History of the Human Sciences 18 (4):1-25.
A number of writers have picked out the way knowledge in the human sciences reflexively alters the human subject as what separates these sciences from the natural sciences. Furthermore, they take this reflexivity to be a condition of moral existence. The article sympathetically examines this emphasis on reflexive processes, but it rejects the particular conclusion that the reflexive phenomenon enables us to demarcate the human sciences. The first sections analyse the different meanings that references to reflexivity have in the psychological (...)

  • ‘Humanity in the chrysalis stage’: indigenous Australians in the anthropological imagination, 1899–1926.Henrika Kuklick - 2006 - British Journal for the History of Science 39 (4):535-568.
Baldwin Spencer and F. J. Gillen's Native Tribes of Central Australia is now remembered as an approximation of the anthropological method that would soon be conventional: a comprehensive study of a delimited area, based on sustained fieldwork, portraying a population's distinctive character. In 1913, however, Bronislaw Malinowski said of Spencer and Gillen's studies that ‘half the total production in anthropological theory ha[d] been based upon their work, and nine-tenths affected or modified by it’. Native Tribes inspired an intense international debate, (...)

  • Plato the myth maker.Luc Brisson - 1998 - Chicago, Ill.: University of Chicago Press. Edited by Gerard Naddaf.
The word myth is commonly thought to mean a fictional story, but few know that Plato was the first to use the term muthos in that sense. He also used muthos to describe the practice of making and telling stories, the oral transmission of all that a community keeps in its collective memory. In the first part of Plato the Myth Maker , Luc Brisson reconstructs Plato's multifaceted description of muthos in light of the latter's Atlantis story. The second part (...)

  • A Place for Strangers: Towards a History of Australian Aboriginal Being.Tony Swain - 1993 - Cambridge University Press.
Many of the elements ascribed to traditional Aboriginal beliefs and practices are the result of contact with external peoples - Melanesians and Indonesians, as well as Europeans. This controversial and provocative 1993 book is a detailed and continent-wide study of the impact of outsiders on Australian Aboriginal world-views. The author separates out a common core of religious beliefs which reflect the precontact spirituality of Australian Aborigines. This book investigates Aboriginal myth, ritual, cosmology and philosophy, and also examines social organisation, subsistence (...)

  • Arguments about Aborigines: Australia and the Evolution of Social Anthropology.I. R. Hiatt & L. R. Hiatt - 1996 - Cambridge University Press.
In the nineteenth century, Australian Aborigines were used by European scholars as an exemplar of early human forms, and have consequently featured as the crucial case study for generations of social theorists and anthropologists. Arguments about Aborigines examines controversial subjects such as family life, religion and ritual, and land rights through the prism of Aboriginal studies. Professor Hiatt's book will provide a valuable introduction to Aboriginal ethnography, and is a shrewd and stimulating history of the central questions in Aboriginal studies.

  • The Longing for Myth in Germany: Religion and Aesthetic Culture From Romanticism to Nietzsche.George S. Williamson - 2004 - University of Chicago Press.
Since the dawn of Romanticism, artists and intellectuals in Germany have maintained an abiding interest in the gods and myths of antiquity while calling for a new mythology suitable to the modern age. In this study, George S. Williamson examines the factors that gave rise to this distinct and profound longing for myth. In doing so, he demonstrates the entanglement of aesthetic and philosophical ambitions in Germany with some of the major religious conflicts of the nineteenth century. Through readings of (...)
