This article explores contemporary biopolitics in the light of Michel Foucault's oft quoted suggestion that contemporary politics calls `life itself' into question. It suggests that recent developments in the life sciences, biomedicine and biotechnology can usefully be analysed along three dimensions. The first concerns logics of control - for contemporary biopolitics is risk politics. The second concerns the regime of truth in the life sciences - for contemporary biopolitics is molecular politics. The third concerns technologies of the self - for (...) contemporary biopolitics is ethopolitics. The article suggests that, in these events, human beings have become `somatic individuals': personhood is increasingly being defined in terms of corporeality, and new and direct relations are established between our biology and our conduct. At the same time, this somatic and corporeal individuality has become opened up to choice, prudence and responsibility, to experimentation, to contestation and so to a politics of `life itself'. The idea of nature in medical theory and practice -- Diseases -- Health: popular concept and philosophical question -- Is a pedagogy of healing possible? -- The problem of regulation in the organism and in society.

We provide an overview of three ways in which the expression “Historical epistemology” (HE) is often understood: (1) HE as a study of the history of higher-order epistemic concepts such as objectivity, observation, experimentation, or probability; (2) HE as a study of the historical trajectories of the objects of research, such as the electron, DNA, or phlogiston; (3) HE as the long-term study of scientific developments. After laying out various ways in which these agendas touch on current debates within both (...) epistemology and philosophy of science (e.g., skepticism, realism, rationality of scientific change), we conclude by highlighting three topics as especially worthy of further philosophical investigation. The first concerns the methods, aims and systematic ambitions of the history of epistemology. The second concerns the ways in versions of HE can be connected to versions of naturalized and social epistemologies. In this book Gary Gutting tells, clearly and comprehensively, the story of French philosophy from 1890 to 1990. He examines the often neglected background of spiritualism, university idealism, and early philosophy of science, and also discusses the privileged role of philosophy in the French education system. Taking account of this background, together with the influences of avant-garde literature and German philosophy, he develops a rich account of existential phenomenology, which he argues is the central achievement of French thought during the (...) century, and of subsequent structuralist and poststructuralist developments. His discussion includes chapters on Bergson, Sartre, Beauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, Foucault, and Derrida, with sections on other major thinkers including Lyotard, Deleuze, Irigaray, Levinas, and Ricoeur. : The paper aims at an analysis of the oeuvre of the French historian of science and epistemologist Gaston Bachelard (1884–1962). Bachelard was the founder of a tradition of French thinking about science that extended from Jean Cavaillès over Georges Canguilhem to Michel Foucault. In the past, he has become best known and criticized for his postulation of an epistemological rupture between everyday experience and scientific experience. In my analysis, I emphasize another aspect of the work of Bachelard. It is (...) the way he conceptualizes the relation between scientific thinking and technology in modern science. Within this framework, the notion of "phenomenotechnique" is of crucial importance. It is one of the organizing concepts of Bachelard's historical epistemology, and it serves as the organizing center of this paper. (shrink)

The recent discussions on the label “historical epistemology” provide us with an interesting example of branding of concepts, ideas and methods. Given this recent interest in the meaning of the expression “historical epistemology”, a detailed analysis of its genealogy and context of emergence may provide some conceptual clarification in a discussion that is often confused and curiously silent on the long tradition of sociology of knowledge. La question “Qu'est-ce que la psychologie?” semble plus gênante pour tout psychologue que ne l'est, pour tout philosophe, la question “Qu'est-ce que la philosophie?”. Car pour la philosophie, la question de son sens et de son essence la constitue, bien plus que ne la définit une réponse à cette question. Le fait que la question renaisse incessamment, faute de réponse satisfaisante, est, pour qui voudrait pouvoir se dire philosophe, une raison d'humilité et non une cause d'humiliation. Mais pour la psychologie, (...) la question de son essence ou plus modestement de son concept, met en question aussi l'existence même du psychologue, dans la mesure où faute de pouvoir répondre exactement sur ce qu'il est, il lui est rendu bien difficile de répondre de ce qu'il fait. Il ne peut alors chercher que dans une efficacité toujours discutable la justification de son importance de spécialiste, importance dont il ne déplairait pas absolument à tel ou tel qu'elle engendrât chez le philosophe un complexe d'infériorité. -/- En disant de l'efficacité du psychologue qu'elle est discutable, on n'entend pas dire qu'elle est illusoire; on veut simplement remarquer que cette efficacité est sans doute mal fondée, tant que preuve n'est pas faite qu'elle est bien due à l'application d'une science, c'est-à-dire tant que le statut de la psychologie n'est pas fixé de telle façon qu'on la doive tenir pour plus et mieux qu'un empirisme composite, littérairement codifié aux fins d'enseignement. En fait, de bien des travaux de psychologie, on retire l'impression qu'ils mélangent à une philosophie sans rigueur une éthique sans exigence et une médecine sans contrôle. Philosophe sans rigueur, parce qu'éclectique sous prétexte d'objectivité; éthique sans exigence, parce qu'associant des expériences éthologiques elles-mêmes sans critique, celle du confesseur, de l'éducateur, du chef, du juge, etc.; médecine sans contrôle, puisque des trois sortes de maladies les plus inintelligibles et les moins curables, maladies de la peau, maladie des nerfs et maladies mentales, l'étude et le traitement des deux dernières ont fourni de toujours à la psychologie des observations et des hypothèses. -/- [78] Donc il peut sembler qu'en demandant “Qu'est-ce que la psychologie?” on pose une question qui n'est ni impertinente ni futile. L’activité technique est-elle un simple prolongement de la connaissance objective, comme il est devenu commun de le penser à la suite de la philosophie positiviste, ou bien est-elle l’expression d’un « pouvoir » original, créateur en son fond, et pour lequel la science élaborerait, parfois à la suite, un programme de développement ou un code de précautions? La philosophie cartésienne paraît avoir abordé de face ce problème important et avoir considéré le rapport de la théorie et de la pratique de (...) façon plus ample et nuancée qu’on ne le croit généralement.
