Traditionally, comparative literature has focused on the study of influences between texts and it is only recent work that has explored the analogies and affinitiesof historically independent cultures. In this spirit, this paper develops methods for a structured poetic analysis and applies them to a systematic comparison of thepoem “Niǎo Mǐng Jiàn” from the 8th-century Chinese poet Wáng Wéi and the program piece of Paul Celan’s Atemwende: “Du Darfst,” based upon a detailed analysis of their poetics. The analysis and translation (...) reveals how both poems employ words and images as signs without reference, and create dialogical gaps through ambiguity and impersonality. Thus, despite their cultural and historical separation, both poetic texts become “hermetic,” and both poets apply the “hermetic” as a method of inquiry into truth, a truth that cannot be simply pronounced, but needs to be cowitnessed, or heard in silence. It is through this meaningful “silence” that their poetry invites readers and translators all the more perceptively to engage in meaningful conversations. These results entail encouraging perspectives for the question of the limits of translation, especially with regard to east-western studies and for crosscultural comparative literature. Thus, the paper supports Prof. Li Qingben’s and Prof. Guo Jinghua’s claim for a multi-dimensional framework in the study of East-West cultural influences. (shrink)

Lorsqu’on se demande si la règle à laquelle obéit, par exemple, la continuation d’une suite de nombres comme 2,4,6,8,... a été ou non suivie correctement dans un cas particulier, il est naturel de répondre qu’elle l’a été si et seulement si on a fait « la même chose »que depuis le début. Mais Wittgenstein souligne que les deux concepts « faire la même chose » et « appliquer correctement la règle » sont imbriqués l’un dans l’autre d’une manière telle que (...) cette réponse ne nous est d’aucun secours. Quelqu’un pourrait continuer de façon déviante et soutenir néanmoins qu’il a bel et bien fait la même chose qu’auparavant. C’est cette situation qui est à l’origine du « paradoxe sceptique » qui a été discuté par Kripke. Un aspect important de la solution de Wittgenstein consiste à faire remarquer que, même dans le cas des règles mathématiques, le contenu de la règle n’est ni plus ni moins déterminé que ne l’est la pratique qui consiste à appliquer la règle. Or, le sceptique raisonne sur ce point comme si le contenu de la règle, aussi déterminé qu’il puisse être, pouvait néanmoins toujours laisser subsister une indétermination partielle et même peut-être complète dans la façon de l’appliquer. Ce que veut dire Wittgenstein semble être, justement, que la règle ne possède pas, par rapport à la pratique de l’application, le genre d’indépendance et de distance qui pourrait donner lieu à la formulation d’un authentique problème sceptique. In this paper, I explore a new type of semiotic translation in the context of Audiovisual Translation Studies (AVTS). To that end, a set of formulaic sequencesbestowed of pragmalinguistic value (hedging strings) is analysed. It is argued that the semiotic analysis of conversational features in English may contribute to facilitate their pedagogical exploitation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This analysis builds theoretically on a semiotic translational framework termed Semiosic Translation (and its subset, Semiosic Subtitling) predicated upon three (...) types of translation: (i) Metaleptic translation; (ii) indexical translation; and (iii) translation as dynamic discontinuity. Th e translational rationale thus arrived at is deemed to account for what it is that binds together linguistic signs with other sign systems. (shrink)
