  3. Marquard Freher and the presumption of goodness in legal humanism.Andreas Blank - 2023 - History of European Ideas 49 (3):491-505.
One of the most detailed early modern discussions of the morality of esteem can be found in the work of the reformed jurist and historian Marquard Freher (1565–1614). Since the question of how much esteem others deserve is fraught with a high degree of uncertainty, Freher relied on the work of other legal humanists, who discussed questions of esteem from the perspective of arguments from the presumption of goodness. The humanist approach to the presumption of goodness integrated considerations about presumed (...)

  4. Nietzsche on the Origin of Conscience and Obligation.Avery Snelson - 2019 - Journal of Nietzsche Studies 50 (2):310-331.
The second essay of Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morality (GM) offers a naturalistic and developmental account of the emergence of conscience, a faculty uniquely responsive to remembering and honoring obligations. This article attempts to solve an interpretive puzzle that is invited by the second essay's explanation of nonmoral obligation, prior to the capacity to feel guilt. Ostensibly, Nietzsche argues that the conscience and our concept of obligation originated within contractual (“creditor-debtor”) relations, when creditors punished delinquent debtors (GM II:5). However, this interpretation, (...)

  6. Author spotlight: inspiration and perspiration, between science and literature.Victor Adelino Ausina Mota - manuscript
What guides, in fact, the spirit of the writer, a consciousness in the training of his sense of humanity and inhumanity of others, or just entertains readers who see life as uninteresting, as a "thing" that does not deserve to be lived only by the playful side of things and people? Yes, what commands the author’s conscience? The Id, the Ego? God? Does he accept a Voice, which though bothering him, gives him advice for free, dismissing the psychiatrist and then (...)

This is the English translation of Chapters Two and Three of Painless Civilization, which was published in Japanese in 2003. In this volume, I examine the problems of painless civilization from the perspective of philosophical psychology and ethics. I discuss how the essence of love is transformed in a society moving toward painlessness and how the painless stream penetrates each of us and makes us living corpses. In order to tackle the problems of painless civilization, we must look inside our (...)

  8. Reconciling Psychopathy and Low Self-Control.Richard Wiebe - 2003 - Justice Quarterly 20:297-336.
Although both reflect a self-centered, antisocial personality, psychopathy and low self-control have seldom been examined together. This study created scales reflecting both common and unique elements of both constructs, investigated their factor structure, and explained variance in delinquency. Four alternative hypotheses were tested: that low self control and psychopathy constitute a single construct, that they constitute primary and secondary psychopathy or interpersonal and intrapersonal traits, or that they constitute Antisociality - the tendency to perform antisocial acts- and (low) Self-Direction-the (...)
