In an online, participatory class, we interpreted The Dream of the Tabby Cats knowing nothing of the dreamer beyond age and gender, and having none of the dreamer’s associations. Our interpretation included a series of predictions about the dreamer. When it was complete, we asked the bringer of the dream (who had until then been silent and was not visible to us) to give us more information about the dreamer. Later the dreamer herself gave us more information. Of six predictions (...) four were confirmed. The dreamer’s apartment is repeatedly disturbed and, each time, a new cat appears. Our interpretation included a series of falsifiable predictions about the dreamer. No experimental test of dream interpretation has previously been reported. We present experimental evidence to show that an interpretation was accurate because it accurately described the dreamer’s reality. Jung and current experts notwithstanding, we could interpret from the text alone because information is redundant: repetition provides internal checks. Knowing neither the dreamer nor their associations to the dream’s images we interpreted a dream, creating falsifiable predictions that we subsequently tested by gathering independent information about the dreamer. Predictions were supported. These (...) results were repeated with seven additional dreams. We found that each dream furthered the emergence of personality (a difficult, life-long project that requires the rehearsal of new possibilities). Each dream was tightly crafted and used humor, drama or hyperbole to penetrate the dreamer’s defenses. Our experimental system is more productive because it studies dreams directly: for example, one iteration elucidated healing steps during therapy while another confirmed the psychological interpretation of a myth. Our experiment may allow us to accumulate a body of generally accepted knowledge about dream interpretation and may help to make interpretation itself more accurate. In the US one person in five lives with mental illness. Our research may promote public health by supporting talk therapy against pressure from the drug and insurance industries. Our research provides experimental evidence for a very old idea, that a dream offers guidance and wisdom. If generative AI creates story without human values, we show that a dream is a story that helps integrate personality and compensates for excess. (shrink)
