Starting from the problem of tolerance in a multicultural society, the author undermines the limits of a classical‐liberal foundation (negative tolerance) and suggests the need for a new meaning: a positive concern of tolerance implying appreciation of a variety of social cultures and value traditions. On an ethical level, positive tolerance can be grounded in the Discourse Theory, developing the classical Kantian deontological ethics in a transcendental‐pragmatic and in a transcendental‐hermeneutic sense. These two lectures by Jacques Derrida, 'Foreigner Question: Come from Abroad' and 'Step of Hospitality/No Hospitality', derive from a series of seminars on 'hospitality' conducted by Derrida in Paris, January 1996. The book consists of two texts on facing pages. 'Invitation' by Anne Dufourmantelle appears on the left clarifying and inflecting Derrida's 'response' on the right. Lucy Allais presents an original interpretation of Kant's transcendental idealism. She argues that his distinction between things in themselves and things as they appear to us has both epistemological and metaphysical components. Kant is committed to a genuine idealism about things as they appear to us, but this is not a phenomenalist idealism. He is committed to the claim that there is an aspect of reality that grounds mind-dependent spatio-temporal objects, and which we cannot cognize, but he does not assert (...) the existence of distinct non-spatio-temporal objects. On Allais's account, we cannot understand Kant's idealism without a clear account of his notion of intuition and of the role of intuition in cognition: she understands Kantian intuitions as representations that give us acquaintance with the objects of thought. This enables us to make sense of Kant's central argument for his idealism in the Transcendental Aesthetic, and to see why he takes the complete idealist position to be established there. (shrink)

In this essay I discuss the issue of Kantian hospitality and how Katrin Flikschuh’s arguments in “Kant’s Nomads: Encountering Strangers” offer us a framework for dealing with certain problems that seem to arise out of the Kantian account, namely, problems of dealing with cultures unlike modern liberal states, such as nomadic and indigenous communities. I look at some criticisms of Kant’s position on hospitality and cosmopolitan right and on how Flikschuh’s discussion helps to resolve these criticisms. I focus especially on (...) her discussion of respectful interaction and openness in the course of encountering cultural others, encounters that inherently and positively contain a large element of unexpectedness. This paper argues, against Kant, that the universal human rights of individuals in migration situations cannot be adequately respected (let alone protected) when select political and legal rights are not extended to them. Migration situations upset fairly entrenched principles of global justice. Nonetheless, the paper takes the position that some recognizably ‘Kantian’ cosmopolitan points of view are a promising corrective for deficits in Kant’s own theory. The first part of the essay introduces readers to the basics of Kant’s conception of (...) hospitality in the context of his cosmopolitan political philosophy, and then provides a brief explanation of Seyla Benhabib’s criticisms of Kant’s theory. While evolving contexts and unforeseen developments can superannuate many prescriptions in classical philosophical texts, Benhabib’s critique is much deeper, arguing that by disaggregating permanent membership from the political rights of citizenship, the right to hospitality embodies the ‘paradox’ of democratic legitimation. Part two shows how contemporary philosophical analyses of global justice based on Kantian considerations (specifically John Rawls) manage to replicate Kant’s error. The third and fourth parts of the essay describe how some other Kantians (Benhabib and James Bohman) sidestep these mistakes by challenging some basic presuppositions pervasive in thinking about global justice. Such innovations theorize moral-political principles that any adequately hospitable civil regime must attend to concerning migration situations. These latter contributions indicate how features of the lived experience of migrants may create new ‘associative’ moral obligations within states, and explain how the absence of ‘transnational’ political rights exposes migrants to domination. The purpose of this article is to respond to Jacques Derrida’s reading of Immanuel Kant’s laws of hospitality and to offer a deeper exploration into Kant’s separation of a cosmopolitan right to visit ( Besuchsrecht) and the idea of a universal right to reside ( Gastrecht). Through this discussion, the various laws of hospitality will be examined, extrapolated and outlined, particularly in response to the tensions articulated by Derrida. By doing so, this article will offer a reinterpretation of the laws (...) of hospitality, arguing that hospitality is not meant to capture all the conditions necessary for cosmopolitan citizenship or for a thoroughgoing condition of cosmopolitan justice as Derrida assumes. This is because hospitality could be understood as the basic normative requirement necessary to establish an ethical condition for intersubjective communication at the global level, where discursive communication regarding the substance of a future condition of cosmopolitan justice is to be subjected to global public reason. For once, (...) Fame has picked one who deserves it and, for that matter, one who is still living. Anyone who has studied philosophy cannot, when confronted by Heidegger’s work, fail to recognize how the originality and force of his achievements, stemming from genius, are combined with an attentive, painstaking, and close working-out of the argument—with that craftsmanship of the patient artisan in which phenomenologists take such pride. In this study, it is important for us to understand, above all, the true intentions of our author, to illuminate what he thinks really needs to be said, and to surmise what is most critical for him.To get to the heart of Heidegger’s system, it seems fitting to begin with a problem that is generally familiar. We choose the problem of knowledge, a deeper understanding of which takes us to the very threshold of Heidegger’s thought. The central problem that I address in this dissertation is itself a political one. I consider the implications of taking Immanuel Kant's thought seriously with respect to international relations. And I examine the stakes of taking on a Kantian approach to understanding international politics. ;Kant's political philosophy is foundational to modern international relations theory and is subject to substantial revival within the discipline. The first movement of this study thus offers a critical evaluation of how Kant's thought has historically functioned (...) in this field of inquiry. My initial findings are that both the ground and new vision that his texts allegedly offer are founded in highly problematic readings. In this respect I insist on the need to review Kant's political writings within the deeper context of his larger philosophical texts. Taking up this task myself, I discover that Kant's political thought does not support the aims or conventions of traditional international relations theory whatsoever. I submit that his work effectively argues against the legitimacy of the discipline. But, I do not, consequently, suggest that Kant's work has nothing to say to the study of international politics. On the contrary, I contend that he simply offers a very different approach, one that understands international relations itself as being a theoretical practice. I thus go on to explore the kind of international theory Kant himself offers. And I find this to be a fundamentally critical enterprise. But, in this regard, I also discover that Kant's representation of international politics does not meet the standards of the critical approach he himself requires. Finally, I consider whether or not it is possible to develop a successful approach to international politics that is in fact commensurate with Kant's commitment to critique. Here I find glimpses of possibility in the works of certain contemporary theorists of international relations. Still, I ultimately conclude that a Kantian-critical approach to international politics must give up the world or the international as its bases of analysis and, rather, take up politics, minus global limits, as its initial ground.
