Liberty and freedom are frequently invoked to justify political action. Presidents as diverse as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush have built their policies on some version of these noble values. Yet in practice, idealist agendas often turn sour as they confront specific circumstances on the ground. Demonstrated by incidents at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay, the pursuit of liberty and freedom can lead to violence and repression, undermining our trust in universal (...) theories of liberalism, neoliberalism, and cosmopolitanism. Combining his passions for politics and geography, David Harvey charts a cosmopolitan order more appropriate to an emancipatory form of global governance. Political agendas tend to fail, he argues, because they ignore the complexities of geography. Incorporating geographical knowledge into the formation of social and political policy is therefore a necessary condition for genuine democracy. Harvey begins with an insightful critique of the political uses of freedom and liberty, especially during the George W. Bush administration. Then, through an ontological investigation into geography's foundational concepts—space, place, and environment—he radically reframes geographical knowledge as a basis for social theory and political action. In The Wager of Lucien Goldmann, Mitchell Cohen provides the first full-length study of this major figure of postwar French intellectual life and champion of socialist humanism. Un mal hante l'époque : la manie compulsive de juger. Tout le monde semble vouloir juger tout le monde, comme si cette escalade judiciaire était de nature à pallier l'obscurcissement de la politique et l'affaissement du civisme. Pourtant, qu'il s'agisse des grands procès pour crime contre l'humanité ou de l'expérience des tribunaux pénaux internationaux, le jugement sonne faux. Sa justice manque de justesse. Des événements récents à fort retentissement médiatique permettent de prendre la mesure du problème. L'affaire Pinochet : à (...) quelles conditions l'humanité peut-elle devenir source de droit et comment juger les dictateurs? Les procès pour crime contre l'humanité : quel usage en faire, quand sa définition évolue tant? Le procès Papon : comment, cinquante ans après, démêler les faits, distinguer les responsabilités individuelles de celles de l'Etat? La table ronde des historiens organisée par le journal Libération pour soumettre à l'examen les accusations de Gérard Chauvy contre Lucie et Raymond Aubrac : peut-on éviter que l'expertise historique dégénère en instruction? Ce malaise n'est pas seulement celui du droit, il est tout autant celui de l'histoire : plutôt que d'accepter la fragile incertitude du jugement humain, la tentation reste forte en effet d'en appeler à de vieux fétiches majuscules, l'Histoire ou l'Humanité, de glisser du jugement historique toujours en appel au tribunal définitif de l'Histoire. Contre cette tentation, je me suis efforcé tout au long de ce livre de définir les conditions politiques d'un juste exercice du jugement en matière historique, où mémoire, deuil et oubli contribuent chacun à sa façon à l'institution d'une société consciente et responsable.
