  1. J. G. Droysen Between Greeks And Jews.Arnaldo Momigliano - 1970 - History and Theory 9 (2):139-153.
    J. C. Droysen was the first to use the term "Hellenism" to designate the civilization of the Greek-speaking world after Alexander, and much of the confusion over what the term is intended to signify derives from Droysen's own difficulty in relating the political to. the cultural aspects of that period. Droysen defined Hellenism as that stage in the evolution of paganism which led from classical Greece to Christianity. The most convincing explanation for Droysen's abandonment of cultural history is that his (...)

Rather than providing mere defintions or descriptive and analytical explanantions the _HWPh_ strictly applies the critical method of history of concepts developed by the eminent German scholar and philosopher Joachim Ritter. By means of precise and detailed references it documents the origin, first occurrence, the historical evolution and the changes of meaning of each concept, from Ancient Greek to (...)

From the late-fifteenth century onwards, scholars across Europe began to write books about how to read and evaluate histories. These pioneering works - which often take surprisingly modern-sounding positions - grew from complex early modern debates about law, religion, and classical scholarship. In this book, based on the Trevelyan Lectures of 2005, Anthony Grafton explains why so many of these works were written, why they attained so much insight - and why, in the centuries that followed, most scholars gradually forgot (...)

None of these alleged evidences can survive examination. Moreover, whatever Greek philosophers thought about cyclical time, that view cannot be found in the historians. This is a reassessment of the moral and theological foundations of modern Europe. It argues that the formidable dual influences of humanism and Calvinism forced a discussion about the essentially moral function of scholarship and learning to the very centre of intellectual debate in early modern Scotland, and that this in turn led to the growth of an "e;enlightened"e; community amongst (...)

The chronicles of the French Abbey of Saint-Denis illustrate medieval society's dependence on the past for legitimacy. The historical mentality of the Saint-Denis chroniclers was shaped equally by rhetorical principles of classical historiography and by techniques of Biblical typological exegesis. The chroniclers tended to use historical exempla drawn from the past in the same way that Biblical exegesis used types; that is, not only as rhetorical, hortatory examples of morally desirable behavior but as actual prefigurations of events to come with (...)

ABSTRACTWhat did “historical distance” mean to historians in the Rankean tradition? Although historical distance is often equated with temporal distance, an analysis of Ernst Bernheim's Lehrbuch der historischen Methode reveals that for German historians around 1900 distance did not primarily refer to a passage of time that would enable scholars to study remote pasts from retrospective points of view. If Bernheim's manual presents historical distance as a prerequisite for historical interpretation, the metaphor rather conveys a need for self‐distanciation. Self‐distanciation is (...)

Philosophers of history in the past few decades have been predominantly interested in issues of explanation and narrative discourse. This paper, then, suggests a new agenda for philosophy of history. Inspired by a “performative turn” in the history and philosophy of science, (...)
