Modern empiricism has been conditioned in large part by two dogmas. One is a belief in some fundamental cleavage between truths which are analytic, or grounded in meanings independently of matters of fact, and truth which are synthetic, or grounded in fact. The other dogma is reductionism: the belief that each meaningful statement is equivalent to some logical construct upon terms which refer to immediate experience. Both dogmas, I shall argue, are ill founded. One effect of abandoning them is, as (...) we shall see, a blurring of the supposed boundary between speculative metaphysics and natural science. Available for the first time in 20 years, here are two important works from the 1920s by the best-known representative of the Vienna Circle.

Several of these essays have been printed whole in journals; others are in varying degrees new. Two main themes run through them. One is the problem of meaning, particularly as involved in the notion of an analytic statement. The other is the notion of ontological, commitment, particularly as involved in the problem of universals.

This major publication is a history of the semantic tradition in philosophy from the early nineteenth century through its incarnation in the work of the Vienna Circle, the group of logical positivists that emerged in the years 1925-1935 in Vienna who were characterised by a strong commitment to empiricism, a high regard for science, and a conviction that modern logic is the primary tool of analytic philosophy. In the first part of the book, Alberto Coffa traces the roots of logical (...) positivism in a semantic tradition that arose in opposition to Kant's theory that a priori knowledge is based on pure intuition and the constitutive powers of the mind. In Part II, Coffa chronicles the development of this tradition by members and associates of the Vienna Circle. Much of Coffa's analysis draws on the unpublished notes and correspondence of many philosophers. The book, however, is not merely a history of the semantic tradition from Kant 'to the Vienna Station'. Coffa also critically reassesses the role of semantic notions in understanding the ground of a priori knowledge and its relation to empirical knowledge and questions the turn the tradition has taken since Vienna. Rudolf Carnap and W. V. Quine, two of the twentieth century's most important philosophers, corresponded at length—and over a long period of time—on matters personal, professional, and philosophical. Their friendship encompassed issues and disagreements that go to the heart of contemporary philosophic discussions. Carnap was a founder and leader of the logical positivist school. The younger Quine began as his staunch admirer but diverged from him increasingly over questions in the analysis of meaning and the justification of belief. The letters are presented here, in full, for the first time. The substantial introduction by Richard Creath offers a lively overview of Carnap's and Quine's careers and backgrounds, allowing the nonspecialist to see their writings in historical and intellectual perspective. Die Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre gilt als das Hauptwerk von Moritz Schlick. Hierin entwickelt Schlick in Auseinandersetzung mit zeitgenössischen Positionen seine einflussreichen Gedanken zum Wesen der Erkenntnis, zum Verhältnis zwischen Psychologie und Logik, zum Leib-Seele-Problem und zum erkenntnistheoretischen Realismusstreit. Der Text wurde während der frühen Rostocker Jahre Schlicks, von 1911 bis 1916, verfasst. Die Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre ist ein Meilenstein der wissenschaftlichen Philosophie und grundlegend für die spätere Entwicklung des Wiener Kreises des Logischen Empirismus.

In der Erfahrung sind zwei Stufen zu unterscheiden: Die primäre Welt besteht aus den noch nicht dinglich gedeuteten Sinnesempfindungen in ihrer einfachsten Ordnung nach Zeit-, Raum-und Qualitätsunterschieden. Alle Ordnung und Verarbeitung der Erfahrung von solcher Art, daß sie auch weggelassen werden kann, rechnet zur zweiten Stufe. Ihr Inhalt ist die sekundäre Welt; Beispiele: die gewöhnliche Welt des täglichen Lebens und die physikalische Welt.Der Begriff der Dimensionszahl (DZ) wird festgelegt. Während die sekundäre (die gewöhnliche und die physikalische) Welt die DZ (3+1) (...) hat (d. h. 3 Raum- und 1 Zeitdimension), ergibt die Untersuchung für die primäre Welt (den Bereich der ungedeuteten Sinnesempfindungen) nur die DZ (2+1). Die Konstruktion der sekundären Welt schließt also eine Erhöhung der DZ um 1 ein.Nach einer Bestimmung des Begriffs der determinierenden und der beschränkenden Gesetze zeigt sich: In der sekundären (physikalischen) Welt gelten determinierende Gesetze bestimmter Art (ersten Grades). In der primären Welt bestehen weder determinierende noch auch bloß beschränkende Gesetze. Der Aufbau der sekundären Welt führt also die Determiniertheit neu ein.Die beiden in die sekundäre Welt eingebauten Fiktionen: Dreidimensionalität des Raumes (gleichbedeutend mit Vierdimensionalität des Weltgeschehens) und Determiniertheit oder physikalische Kausalität stehen in logischem Abhängigkeits-verhältnis zueinander. During World War II, he lost his teaching post because of his wife s Jewish background, but he went back to teaching in 1945. He was known for his scientific approach to philosophy, especially his application of empiricism to his ideas on logical positivism.
