This work shows that being must originally be understood as implication. We begin with what Heidegger calls Hegelrsquo;s lsquo;new concept of beingrsquo; in the emPhenomenology of Spirit/em: time as history is the essence of being. This concept however, is not univocalmdash;for supersession means destroying-preserving. Hegel shows himself to be the thinker of truth as essentially ambiguous; and the emPhenomenology/em is onto-heno-chrono-phenomenology, the history of the being and unity, time and aspect, of the conceptrsquo;s ambiguity. For Heidegger however, conceptual ambiguity confirms (...) that Hegelrsquo;s history of being is stuck in a vulgar interpretation of time; and the emPhenomenology/em can explain neither the origin of this time, nor the necessity of negation for the historical determination of beingmdash;for Hegel cannot think the ground of the concept of being, that is, the grounding of the ground. If Heidegger argues however, that the emPhenomenology/em is pre-determined by its ancient point of departure, we must go back to the Greeks, back to Aristotlersquo;s original insight : being and unity emimply/em one anothermdash;for they are essentially implications. The author's concept of incommensurability is explicated by elaborating the claim that some terms essential to the formulation of older theories defy translation into the language of more recent ones. Defense of this claim rests on the distinction between interpreting a theory in a later language and translating the theory into it. The former is both possible and essential, the latter neither. The interpretation/translation distinction is then applied to Kitcher's critique of incommensurability and Quine's conception of a translation manual, both (...) of which take reference-preservation as the sole semantic criterion of translational adequacy. This paper discusses the notion of ecopoetics in relation to the work of Martin Heidegger and his concept of dwelling. Our aim, broadly stated, is to respond to the question: "What frame of mind could bring about sustainability - and how might we develop it?" In the first part of the paper, we comment on Jonathan Bate's notion of ecopoetics and his discussion of Heidegger. Crucial here is the question of whether we can ever approach Nature in an non-ideological way (...) or are all attempts to capture Nature, theoretically or poetically or narratively, nothing more than our own peculiar appropriation of it? Ecopoetics might be conceived as a response to this question, although we dispute Bate's view. In the second part of the paper, following Micheal Haar's perceptive reading, we elaborate the four senses that Heidegger gives to Nature, and in the third section, we make some concluding comments about the notion of sustainability that might be explicated in relation to Heidegger's four senses of Nature. Many ecopoetical formulations of belonging to, or caring for, the environment involve the notion of ‘dwelling’, which, in Martin Heidegger’s work, necessitated a kind of peaceful stasis, or a mode of being attuned to one particular locale, rather than to many. This essay will argue that in fragile, colonised environments like Australia’s such thinking is irrelevant and negligent because it insists on the importance of an individual’s on-going relationship with a single place, rather than with many. This relationship is manifest (...) in particular kinds of poetry. The speaker’s intimacy with a place is affirmed with layers of detail, and assertions that it is _this place_ to which the speaker belongs. The place is in turn constructed, and caged, within this representation. A poem that seeks to describe complex, dynamic ecologies in static representations, however, ignores both the nature of these ecologies and the poem’s own connection to them. This essay will propose a process-based poetics based on nomadic thought. Rather than describing static representations of the ‘real’ world, a nomadic ecopoetics understands its own role _within_ the real world. Like nomadic agricultural practice, it moves in relation to the demands of its environment without an over-arching need to become entrenched in any particular locale. The essay will argue that nomadic thinking is as important for urban as rural regions as global climate change becomes increasingly influential. (shrink)
