Kants Anthropologie (1798) galt lange als eine bloß popularphilosophische Schrift von allenfalls propädeutischem Wert. Dabei erfüllt sich die Leistung der Anthropologie keineswegs nur in einer vorphilosophischen Verständigung über das theoretische und praktische Vermögen des Menschen. Nur die anthropologische Reflexion verleiht Gewißheit, daß der Mensch "sein eigener letzter Zweck ist". Dies gibt dem Leben seinen Sinn.

In the human quest for orientation vis-à-vis personal life and comprehensive reality the worldviews of religionists and humanists offer different answers, and science also plays a crucial role. Yet it is the ordinary, embodied experience of meaningful engagement with reality in which all these cultural activities are rooted. Human beings have to relate themselves to the entirety of their lives to achieve orientation. This relation involves a non-methodical, meaningful experience that exhibits the crucial features for understanding worldviews: it comprises cognition, (...) volition, and emotion, is embodied, action-oriented, and expressive. From this starting-point, religious and secular worldviews articulate what is experienced as ultimately meaningful. Yet the plurality and one-sidedness of these life stances necessitates critical engagement for which philosophy provides indispensable means. In the end, some worldviews can be ruled out, but we are still left with a plurality of genuine options for orientation. (shrink)

Das Wort Lebensanschauung zählt nicht eigentlich zu den Schlüsselbegriffen im Werk Georg Simmels, ganz im Unterschied zu dem des Lebens, der eine zentrale Kategorie seines Denkens bezeichnet. Es gehört mit Lebensansicht, Lebensauffassung, Lebens- und Weltbetrachtung, Weltanschauung und Weltbild in ein gemeinsames Wortfeld, das einen freilich durchaus zentralen Themenkreis im Werk Simmels erschließt. In einer ersten Annäherung seien unter dem Begriff der Lebensanschauung bei Simmel die ganzheitlichen, einzelne Lebenserfahrungen vereinheitlichenden Reaktionen eines Menschen auf das Dasein gefasst. Simmel setzt sich mit dem (...) Thema der Lebensanschauung vor allem in seiner letzten Lebensdekade auseinander, in der Zeit also der Wende seines Werkes von primär kultursoziologischen zu lebensphilosophischen Fragestellungen. Die"Vorlesung über Moralphilosophie" aus den 1770er Jahren ist eine wichtige Erläuterung und Ergänzung zur "Grundlegung der Metaphysik der Sitten"von 1785. Die Neuedition der so genannten Menzer-Vorlesung präsentiert diese Vorlesung auf dem aktuellen Stand der Forschung. Zugrunde gelegt ist die Nachschrift Kaehler, die seit 1997 zum Kant-Archiv in Marburg gehört. Abgeglichen ist der Text mit mehreren Handschriften des Archivs der Berlin-Bandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Staatsbibliothek Berlin. Ein Anhang mit textkritischem Apparat und Erläuterungen zu Literatur und Personen sowie eine Einleitung (...) von Manfred Kühn erschließen die Vorlesung für alle, die sich für die Kant'sche Philosophie der Ethik interessieren. In this article, I examine anew the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant and its contributions to educational theory. I make four claims. First, that Kant should be read as having the Categorical Imperative develop out of subjective maxims. Second, that moral self-perfection is the aim of moral education. Third, that moral self-perfection develops by children habituating the results of their moral maxims in scenarios and cases.
