Frege held that indexical thoughts could be retained through changes of context that required a change of indexical term. I argue that Frege was partially right in that a singular mode of presentation can be retained through changes of indexical. There must, however, be a further mode of presentation that changes when the indexical term changes. This suggests that indexicals should be regarded as complex demonstratives; a change of indexical term is like a change between 'that φ' and 'that ψ', (...) where 'φ' and 'ψ' pick out relational properties that may nonetheless be conceived of by the thinker as intrinsic. Perry argues that certain sorts of indexicals are 'essential', in the sense that they cannot be eliminated in favor of descriptions. This paper also introduces the influential idea that certain sorts of indexicals play a special role in thought, and have a special connection to action.

According to the propositional view of belief, a belief situation involves a believer’s standing in the relation of belief to a proposition. It is argued that the propositional view has unacceptable implications concerning the identity conditions of belief situations involving beliefs with indexical contents, especially where such beliefs are held over a period of time during which background circumstances change. After a critical discussion of Perry’s alternative to the propositional view, a version of the adverbial theory of belief, which accounts (...) satisfactorily for the identity conditions of belief situations, is advanced. This theory, which avoids the standard objections to adverbialism, is defended against the charge that it cannot provide an account of the semantics of sentences attributing the same belief to two or more believers. In the course of this defense it is argued that the standard propositional account of such sentences is insensitive to everyday language. (shrink)

A collection of twelve essays by John Perry and two essays he co-authored, this book deals with various problems related to "self-locating beliefs": the sorts of beliefs one expresses with indexicals and demonstratives, like "I" and "this." Postscripts have been added to a number of the essays discussing criticisms by authors such as Gareth Evans and Robert Stalnaker. Included with such well-known essays as "Frege on Demonstratives," "The Problem of the Essential Indexical," "From Worlds to Situations," and "The Prince and (...) the Phone Booth" are a number of important essays that have been less accessible and that discuss important aspects of Perry's views, referred to as "Critical Referentialism," on the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind. Every statement represents a certain state of affairs as holding in a certain situation, which the statement concerns. The situation which a statement concerns is indicated by the context. It must be distinguished from whichever situation may be explicitly mentioned in the statement. In this framework, two cognitive processes are analysed: projection and reflection. Both involve two representations: one which concerns a situation s, and another one which explicitly mentions that situation. Through reflection we go from the representation concerning s (...) to the representation mentioning s. In this paper I argue indirectly for Frege's semantics, in particular for his conception of propositions, by reviewing some difficulties faced by one of the main contemporary alternative approaches, i.e., the direct reference theory. While Frege's semantics can yield an explanation of cognitive value and belief-preservation, the alternative approach seems to run into trouble here. I shall also briefly consider the question of whether epistemic issues should be of any concern for semantics, i.e., whether the feature mentioned above should really (...) be regarded as an advantage of Frege's theory. Defense of a non-psychological dynamics of demonstrative thoughts.

Two approaches to cognitive dynamics are examined: the direct reference view, taken as represented in David Kaplan's positions, and the neo-Fregean view, taken as represented in Gareth Evans's positions. The upshot of the discussion is twofold. On the one hand, it is argued that both Kaplan's account and Evans's account are on the whole defective. On the other, it is claimed that a broadly Fregean theory is still to be preferred since by positing semantically efficacious modes of presentation it is (...) clearly better equipped to deal adequately with some important phenomena in the area. In particular, it is claimed that the notion of a memory-based demonstrative mode of presentation of an object (a spatio-temporal particular, a region in space, a period of time, etc.) turns out to be indispensable for the purpose of accounting for the persistence of an important range of mental states with propositional content over time. The emphasis in Part II is on the truth conditions of belief sentences. The chief aim is to show how the ontological account of belief advanced in Part I can serve as a basis for a theory of truth conditions for such sentences. The formal theory developed in Part II can, however, be discussed without reference to the earlier ontology. Chapter 11 presents the basic framework for the theory, and also deals with the truth conditions of the belief sentences which (...) are construed as basic. In the later chapters the basic framework is extended to handle a variety of less simple cases, including belief sentences involving indexicals and quasi-indicators , proper names and definite descriptions , quantifying in , and "propositional quantification" . ;Chapters 2 - 6 contain background and motivation for Chapter 7, in which the central tenets of an alternative account of belief are presented. This account is an "adverbial" account in the broad sense of the term, but does not require the "adverbialization" of belief sentences. The account is developed further in Chapter 8, which deals with the truth and falsity of beliefs, and in Chapter 9, which deals with statements about shared beliefs. Chapter 10, which completes Part I, deals briefly with two further theories of belief which share some of the attractions of the account of Chapter 7. ;The emphasis in Part I is on ontological matters. Chapter 2 presents a framework in terms of which it is possible to discuss the identity conditions of belief situations without invoking any particular theory of belief. Chapter 3 describes the propositional view of belief, and draws out its implications concerning the identity conditions of belief situations in terms of the framework of Chapter 2. Chapters 4 and 5 contain a detailed discussion of the identity conditions of belief situations. It is argued in these chapters that the propositional view cannot do justice to the facts about these identity conditions. Chapter 6 deals with Perry's alternative to the propositional view. It is argued that Perry's theory fails to avoid all the difficulties of propositionalism, even though it is an improvement on it. ;This essay deals with the ontology of belief and the truth-conditional semantics of belief sentences. The chief aim of the essay is to develop a strong alternative to the view that propositions must be appealed to in an adequate philosophical treatment of belief and belief sentences. (shrink)

In this essay I first review Kaplan’s theory of linguistic character, and then explain and motivate a concept of doxastic character. I then develop some concepts for dealing with the topic of belief retention and then, finally, discuss Rip Van Winkle. I come down on Kaplan’s side with respect to the Frege-inspired strategy, narrowly construed. But I advocate something like the Frege-inspired strategy, if it is construed more broadly. On my view it is remarkably easy to retain a belief, and (...) I think Evans is quite wrong about Rip and Kaplan. The central concept I develop, however, that of an information game, is in the spirit of much of Evans’ work. I also borrow some of his terminology. (shrink)
