    Affective dynamics are discussed from the perspective of a view of origin and functions of affective valence based in control processes. This view posits that affect reflects the error signal of a feedback loop managing rate of progress at goal attainment or threat avoidance. Negative feelings signal doing poorly, demanding more effort. Positive feelings signal doing better than necessary, allowing coasting, which yields goal attainment without unnecessary resource expenditure.     Two studies tested the hypothesis that certain positive emotions speed recovery from the cardiovascular sequelae of negative emotions. The present study assessed emotion-mood distinctions among a non-academic population and compared these views with distinctions proposed in the literature. Their conclusions, however, are constrained by typical fMRI techniques that do not assess a key ingredient in emotional experience – timing.     Mildly-to-moderately depressed and nondepressed subjects were randomly assigned to spend 8 minutes focusing their attention on their current feeling states and personal characteristics (rumination condition) or on descriptions of geographic locations and objects (distraction condition). Depressed subjects in the rumination condition became significantly more depressed, whereas depressed subjects in the distraction condition became significantly less depressed.
