One of the most influential men of his time, philosopher, psychologist, educator, and author William James (1842-1910) helped lead the transition from a predominantly European-centered nineteenth-century philosophy to a new "pragmatic" American philosophy. Helping to pave the way was his seminal book Pragmatism (1907), in which he included a chapter on "Truth," an essay which provoked severe criticism. In response, he wrote the present work, an attempt to bring together all he had ever written on the theory of knowledge, including (...) an article on the function of cognition, later polemic and expository contributions, and some replies to previous criticism. Description: The common western understanding of Buddhism today envisions this major world religion as one of compassion and tolerance. Histories of German philosophy in the nineteenth century typically focus on its first half--when Hegel, idealism, and Romanticism dominated. By contrast, the remainder of the century, after Hegel's death, has been relatively neglected because it has been seen as a period of stagnation and decline. But Frederick Beiser argues that the second half of the century was in fact one of the most revolutionary periods in modern philosophy because the nature of philosophy itself was up for grabs and the very (...) absence of certainty led to creativity and the start of a new era. In this innovative concise history of German philosophy from 1840 to 1900, Beiser focuses not on themes or individual thinkers but rather on the period's five great debates: the identity crisis of philosophy, the materialism controversy, the methods and limits of history, the pessimism controversy, and the Ignorabimusstreit. Traditional views of the “French … correspondent” reporting panic fear in the Varieties portray the anonymous William James in crisis followed by a Charles Renouvier-inspired commitment to free will, as a first step in his philosophical career. Revisionists propose that the intellectual path was less important than his personal troubles, and that the incident did not even happen prior to the philosophical commitment. There is, however, no evidence of the incident’s timing at all. Instead, the stylized and religious tone of (...) the writing suggests that it is a composite and mannered memory drawn from a lifetime of experience and learning from moods of weakness and despair, which James enlisted to display the attractions of redemption for the “sick soul” temperament. In telling the story, James drew on both his personal difficulties and his intellectual development to create a potent teachable moment in his book on religious experience. (shrink)
