The discussions about the ethical, political and human implications of the postmodernist condition have been raging for longer than most of us care to remember. They have been especially fierce within feminism. After a brief flirtation with postmodern thinking in the 1980s, mainstream feminist circles seem to have turned their back on the staple notions of poststructuralist philosophy. Metamorphoses takes stock of the situation and attempts to reset priorities within the poststructuralist feminist agenda. Cross-referring in a creative way to Deleuze's (...) and Irigaray's respective philosophies of difference, the book addresses key notions such as embodiment, immanence, sexual difference, nomadism and the materiality of the subject. Metamorphoses also focuses on the implications of these theories for cultural criticism and a redefinition of politics. It provides a vivid overview of contemporary culture, with special emphasis on technology, the monstrous imaginary and the recurrent obsession with 'the flesh' in the age of techno-bodies. In _Vibrant Matter_ the political theorist Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events. Toward that end, she theorizes a “vital materiality” that runs through and across bodies, both human and nonhuman. Bennett explores how political analyses of public events might change were we to (...) acknowledge that agency always emerges as the_ _effect of ad hoc configurations of human and nonhuman forces. She suggests that recognizing that agency is distributed this way, and is not solely the province of humans, might spur the cultivation of a more responsible, ecologically sound politics: a politics less devoted to blaming and condemning individuals than to discerning the web of forces affecting situations and events. Bennett examines the political and theoretical implications of vital materialism through extended discussions of commonplace things and physical phenomena including stem cells, fish oils, electricity, metal, and trash. She reflects on the vital power of material formations such as landfills, which generate lively streams of chemicals, and omega-3 fatty acids, which can transform brain chemistry and mood. Along the way, she engages with the concepts and claims of Spinoza, Nietzsche, Thoreau, Darwin, Adorno, and Deleuze, disclosing a long history of thinking about vibrant matter in Western philosophy, including attempts by Kant, Bergson, and the embryologist Hans Driesch to name the “vital force” inherent in material forms. This book develops a morphodynamical approach to linguistic and sign structures as an integrated response to multilevel and interrelated problems in semiolinguistic research. More broadly, the content is linked to the realities of living speech through a connection with the Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, and beyond the formal determinations of a semiolinguistic system and its calculus. Such problems are mainly epistemological, empirical, and theoretical. With regard to theory, the book introduces a morphodynamical architecture of linguistic signs and operations as a suitable mathematization (...) of Saussurean theory. The Husserlian phenomenological signification of this formal apparatus is then established, and, from an empirical standpoint, its compatibility with neurobiological experimental results is discussed. This authored monograph introduces a genuinely theoretical approach to biology. Starting point is the investigation of empirical biological scaling including their variability, which is found in the literature, e.g. allometric relationships, fractals, etc. The book then analyzes two different aspects of biological time: first, a supplementary temporal dimension to accommodate proper biological rhythms; secondly, the concepts of protension and retention as a means of local organization of time in living organisms. Moreover, the book investigates the role of symmetry in biology, (...) in view of its ubiquitous importance in physics. In relation with the notion of extended critical transitions, the book proposes that organisms and their evolution can be characterized by continued symmetry changes, which accounts for the irreducibility of their historicity and variability. The authors also introduce the concept of anti-entropy as a measure for the potential of variability, being equally understood as alterations in symmetry. By this, the book provides a mathematical account of Gould's analysis of phenotypic complexity with respect to biological evolution. The target audience primarily comprises researchers interested in new theoretical approaches to biology, from physical, biological or philosophical backgrounds, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students who want to enter this field. This contribution continues our work on the constitution of visual forms; more specifically, of semiotic plastic forms. We examine emergence from the perspective described by Paolo Fabbri: “unlike logic, the point is not to construct preliminary logical systems and then see how they work in language, but to assemble some very simple units and then observe emergent properties.”. The aim is to “see how, at a certain point, some emergent properties organize themselves and acquire meaning, which is exactly the opposite (...) of old semiotics and old logics.”. (shrink)

Dynamical structuralism was a theoretical innovation in the 1970s, born of a synthesis between the mathematical works of René Thom that applied singularity theory to structuralism in biology and linguistics, and the work of structuralists such as Roman Jakobson, Claude Lévi-Strauss and Algirdas Julien Greimas. At first, dynamic structuralism was misunderstood because such a multilevel non-algebraic modelling approach to the concept of structure was unusual. In 1943 the first edition of the main work of the great Danish linguist Louis Hjelmslev (1899-1965) appeared, and bore the title "Omkring Sprogteoriens Grundlæggelse". The work was translated into English as "Prolegomena to a Theory of Language" This work came to represent a breakthrough in linguistics and formed an entirely new branch of this field. The author begins by ascertaining that language is an inexhaustible wealth of manifold values; language is the tool with which man moulds thought and feeling, (...) mood, aspiring, will and action, the tool with which he influences and is influenced, the last and deepest condition of human society. Although his analysis of the forms of language employs mathematical models, Hjelmslev was also determined not to neglect the human subject who uses language, which led him to an interest in psychology and Psychoanalysis. Le passage du realisme des Recherches logiques de 1901 a l'idealisme des Idees de 1913 a ete le plus souvent tres mal compris a l'epoque et interprete a tort comme un reniement par Husserl de ses prises de position anterieures. La publication des Lecons sur le temps de 1905 et celle des Lecons sur l'espace de 1907 avaient deja montre qu'il ne s'etait agi la que de l'approfondissement de la meme problematique, celle des vecus intentionnels, mais qui ne pouvait plus (...) desormais rester en l'etat, parce que les problemes de constitution qu'elle traitait exigeraient l'emploi d'une methode rigoureuse. Ces Lecons sur la theorie de la signification de 1908 confirment cette certitude, puisqu'en reprenant de facon systematique l'etude du langage, Husserl y a ete conduit a donner a sa theorie de la reduction sa formulation la plus radicale, avec une opposition entre ce qui est phenologique du cote des apparitions et ce qui est phenomenologique du cote des apparaissants.
