    Too often, identifying practices of silencing is a seemingly impossible exercise. Here I claim that attempting to give a conceptual reading of the epistemic violence present when silencing occurs can help distinguish the different ways members of oppressed groups are silenced with respect to testimony. This paper illustrates the need for this division of labor through a historical example, and a formal model is presented to better analyze situations of this type.     The essay gives an overview of how language planning and language policy can be motivated and analyzed by economic methods. It is discussed what type of value language-related goods possess and what type of goods they are, treating properties like degrees of rivalry, exclusion, and shielding.
