According to the PubMed resource from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, over 750,000 scientific articles have been published in the ~5000 biomedical journals worldwide in the year 2007 alone. The vast majority of these publications include results from hypothesis-driven experimentation in overlapping biomedical research domains. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of information being generated by the biomedical research enterprise has made it virtually impossible for investigators to stay aware of the latest findings in their domain of interest, let alone to (...) be able to assimilate and mine data from related investigations for purposes of meta-analysis. While computers have the potential for assisting investigators in the extraction, management and analysis of these data, information contained in the traditional journal publication is still largely unstructured, free-text descriptions of study design, experimental application and results interpretation, making it difficult for computers to gain access to the content of what is being conveyed without significant manual intervention. In order to circumvent these roadblocks and make the most of the output from the biomedical research enterprise, a variety of related standards in knowledge representation are being developed, proposed and adopted in the biomedical community. In this chapter, we will explore the current status of efforts to develop minimum information standards for the representation of a biomedical experiment, ontologies composed of shared vocabularies assembled into subsumption hierarchical structures, and extensible relational data models that link the information components together in a machine-readable and human-useable framework for data mining purposes. This project aims to develop an intelligent system that can accurately identify and classify medicinal herbs using advanced machine learning techniques and image processing. Medicinal herbs have been a cornerstone of traditional medicine for centuries, and the ability to identify them with precision can play a significant role in modern healthcare, research, and conservation efforts. This system utilizes deep learning models to analyze images of plants and herbs, enabling the identification of species based on their physical features such as shape, (...) size, color, and texture of leaves, flowers, and stems. The system incorporates Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), a powerful technique in image recognition, to achieve high accuracy in classifying different medicinal plants. The dataset used for training includes a wide variety of herbs known for their medicinal properties, ensuring the system's versatility and reliability. The user-friendly interface allows users to upload images of plants, after which the system processes the image, compares it with the trained dataset, and provides a possible match along with information about the herb's medicinal uses, benefits, and any potential side effects. This project can serve as an essential tool for herbalists, researchers, and the general public to access accurate information about medicinal plants. (shrink)

Abstract: Retama raetam (RR) is a traditional medicinal plant belongs to fabaceae family which grows in North Africa and East Mediterranean region. Locally, RR is used in several diseases including diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Thus, this study aims to investigate certain behavioral and central effects of methanolic extract of RR seeds in experimental animals (male Albino adult mice of 20 – 35 gm). Three exploratory behavioral models are used in this study, open field, elevated plus maze and light-dark box models, (...) in addition, picrotoxin induced seizure model in mice. In elevated plus-maze test of anxiety, a dose of 25 mg/kg of RR induced a significant increase in number of open arms entries and time spent on open arms of the maze compared to the control. In light-dark model, time spent on light area and number of light-dark transitions are significantly increased after treatment with 25 mg/kg RR extract of seeds. Open field model also revealed a significant increase in general motor activity of the mouse after 25 mg/kg of RR. On the other hand, a dose of 50 mg/kg of RR significantly induced a profound central and peripheral analgesic responses. In summary, this study concludes that RR seeds have a profound anxiolytic-like effect and analgesic response with delay in latency time of seizure induced by picrotoxin in mice. (shrink)

Inflammation is said to be a healthy component of the body's immune system's reaction. Inflammation is characterised by four key symptoms: pain, redness, heat or warmth and swelling. As secondary metabolites, plants may produce a wide range of phytochemical compounds, which possess anti-inflammatory characteristics. Herbal remedies are important therapies for a wide range of ailments all over the world. There are around 7,500 species of medicinal plants, including representatives from over 17,000 flowering plant species. Even though synthetic chemistry has developed (...) its expectations, the use of natural ingredients in the manufacture of drugs used in contemporary medicine is unparalleled. By interfering with the biology of inflammation, anti-inflammatory medications may assist to minimising tissue damage and increase patient comfort. Because of the bulky figure of species reachable for study, the effective development of novel naturally taking place anti-inflammatory drugs is mostly dependent on a multidisciplinary approach to discovering new chemicals. Despite the statistic that many review papers have been produced in this field, the conventional of them simply examined the issue from an area perspective. Several non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been shown to reduce inflammation and pain by decreasing the isoform of the cyclooxygenase enzyme's digestion of arachidonic acid, hence lowering prostaglandin production. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have a host of harmful effects. There are, however, medicinal herbs with anti-inflammatory pharmacological properties that have few or no negative effects. A useful therapeutic herb in the old and new worlds, Centella asiatica (L.), is a perennial creeper with a subtle scent. It can be found all across the world's tropical and subtropical regions. Its useful functional qualities are primarily responsible for the rise in its use in food and drink over time. Numerous reports have demonstrated its potential for antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, neuroprotective, and other activities. These activities are essentially closely linked to the characteristics and mode of action of (...) the plant's bioactive constituents, which include flavonoids, other phenolic compounds, triterpenic acid (asiatic acid and madecassic acid), and triterpenic saponin (madecassoside and asiaticoside). Several applications have been supported by science, which has confirmed the bioactive components. Traditional medicine, particularly in rural Indonesia, plays a crucial role in healthcare, especially for older adults. These remedies, deeply rooted in cultural heritage, offer accessible and affordable alternatives to modern medicine. However, integrating them into formal healthcare systems faces challenges such as quality control, safety, and cultural sensitivity. This study investigates how traditional health practices influence healthcare behaviors and proposes culturally sensitive frameworks to bridge the gap between traditional and modern healthcare. This study employs a literature-based methodology, combining relational design (...) and sensory-dialogical approaches to explore inclusivity and cultural sensitivity in healthcare research. Data from peer-reviewed articles, case studies, and ethnographic reports from 2010 to 2024, focusing on rural Indonesian communities, were analyzed. Thematic analysis identified patterns regarding healthcare preferences, cultural significance, barriers to inclusivity, and ethical challenges in validating traditional remedies. The study highlights the importance of traditional remedies, especially herbal medicine, in maintaining health and cultural identity among older adults. These remedies serve both practical healthcare and cultural purposes. Community-based practices, such as preparing herbal remedies, emphasize their symbolic and therapeutic value. However, challenges like herb-drug interactions, a decline in ethnobotanical knowledge, and the integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare remain prevalent. Culturally sensitive healthcare research is essential to address disparities in rural and marginalized populations in Indonesia. Approaches like relational design and sensory-dialogical frameworks promote inclusivity and ethical rigor. Integrating traditional medicine requires balancing cultural preservation with scientific validation, fostering equitable healthcare solutions that harmonize with contemporary needs. (shrink)

Robert (Robby) P. Tangtingco’s article was called Bergaño’s dictionary “a work of art” in Lost and Found in Translation in the 18th century. The first thing that they observed is the various dialects or languages used by their countrymen. They were assigned to different regions of the Philippines, and one of them was Fray Diego Bergaño. He was designated to Pampanga where he successfully produced a Kapampangan dictionary called “Arte dela Lengua Pampanga”. From the stated dictionary, the reseacher look for (...) words that were related to food due to the reason that Pampanga is known for its mouthwatering food and delicacies. The dictionary was used as a reference for the translation to the English language. Moreover, various dictionaries were used to look for their translated Filipino language. Due to the rapid changes and modernization, loyalty and love to our own country, specifically language, is slowly fading and dying. With this, the researcher continued the study following the due process. First, she looked for each word related to food in Bergaño’s dictionary. Second, she categorized each food according to rice,grains, seafood, edible animal or insect, fruits and vegetable, herbs, cooking utensils, the process of cooking and preparing food, Pampanga’s delicacies and food, and other terminologies that are related to food. Next, six respondents from Pampanga were invited to join a Zoom meeting. They were asked if which among the words listened to were related to food. How do individuals act when rational action is not possible? Using GintisGintis, Herb’s 2009 beliefs, preferences, and constraints model, I delineate his three necessary conditions for rational action in the economist’s sense of the concept. In order to demonstrate that rational action is not always possible, I provide a range of examples where one or more of GintisGintis, Herb’s conditions are not met. I label these “inchoate” situations. I then consider the wide variety of behaviors that can occur (...) in inchoate situations. I describe these as “extra-rational” behaviors. Importantly, I show that extra-rational behavior can be intentional without being rational. I conclude by arguing that the social sciences need multiple, potentially complementary, models of action. Psychology’s recent distinction between System I and System II thinking represents an important move in this direction. The idea of extra-rational behavior strategies for action in inchoate situations potentially provides another additional type of action that is not rational. (shrink)

Though hair loss (alopecia) is not a debilitating or life threatening sickness, the very thought of becoming bald can lead to emotional stress and traumatic experience for those who suffer from premature or excessive hair loss. Many will try anything and everything to bring back their locks. Or at least, some of their once full head of hair. Hair loss sufferers spend billions of dollars annually on remedies ranging from drugs, vitamins to special tonics and shampoos. Conventional treatments of hair (...) thinning includes drugs therapy and hair transplant. Minoxidil and Propecia (Finasteride) are the only two drugs approved by the FDA for hair growth in men. Minoxidil is the only drug available for women with and rogenetic alopecia. These drugs have been proven to show positive results for balding conditions on the vertex region of the scalp. Though these drugs are effective, many are wary of their unknown long-term effect and potential side-effects. This has led to increase interest in alternative remedies such as herbal medicine.
