    Tant qu'un programme de recherche en herbe peut être reconstitué de manière rationnelle en tant que problème progressif, il doit être protégé pendant un certain temps d'un rival puissant existant. Ces considérations, dans leur ensemble, soulignent l’importance de la tolérance méthodologique. Même les fameuses « expériences cruciales » n'auront aucune force pour renverser un programme de recherche. Có lẽ chính vì thế mà Blumert & Liu (1999) mới viết cuốn sách tiêu đề Jiaogulan: China's Immortality Herb.
