I defend a novel account of the wrong of subjecting people to non-consensual sterilization (NCS), particularly in the context of the state-sponsored eugenics programmes once prevalent in the United States. What makes the eugenic practice of NCS distinctively wrong, I claim, is its dehumanizing core: the fact that it is tantamount to treating people as nonhuman animals, thereby expressing the degrading social meaning that they have the value of animals. The practice of NCS is prima facie seriously wrong partly, but (...) crucially, on these grounds. I consider and reject accounts of the wrong of NCS that make no reference to its animalizing character, such as that it violates victims’ (procreative) autonomy, amounts to treating them merely as a means, inflicts psychological harm on them, or constitutes an affront to their human dignity. My discussion suggests that the critical vocabulary of bioethics should be expanded beyond talk of rights-violations, benefits and harms, and equal treatment—and that the language of dehumanization is indispensable to bioethicists. Humanism is the view that people treat others inhumanely when we fail to see them as human beings, so that our treatment of them will tend to be more humane when we (fully) see their humanity. Recently, humanist views have been criticized on the grounds that the perpetrators of inhumanity regard their victims as human and treat them inhumanely partly for this reason. I argue that the two most common objections to humanist views (and their relatives) are unpersuasive: not only (...) does the evidence marshalled against these views fail to actually disprove them, it could threaten them only if some questionable assumptions were granted. By providing necessary conceptual ground-clearing and routing common lines of attack, I hope to determine what it would take for a humanist project to succeed, paving the way for a full defense of humanism that fulfills its explanatory ambitions. The standard of care in the United States favors stabilizing any adult who arrives in an emergency department after a failed suicide attempt, even if he appears decisionally capacitated and refuses life-sustaining treatment. I challenge this ubiquitous practice. Emergency clinicians generally have a moral obligation to err on the side of stabilizing even suicide attempters who refuse such interventions. This obligation reflects the fact that it is typically infeasible to determine these patients’ level of decisional capacitation—among other relevant information—in this (...) unique setting. Nevertheless, I argue, stabilizing suicide attempters over their objection sometimes violates a basic yet insufficiently appreciated right of theirs—the right against bodily invasion. In such cases, it is at least prima facie wrong to stabilize a patient who wants to die even if they lack a contrary advance directive or medical order and suffer from no terminal physical illness. Although the concept of objectification is seen as a valuable tool in feminist theorizing, far less attention has been paid to animalization: treating or regarding a person as a nonhuman animal. I argue that animalization is a distinctive category of wrongdoing, modeling a theory of the phenomenon on Kantian theories of objectification in feminist philosophy. Actions are animalizing, I claim, when they embody a kind of disregard for a person’s characteristically human capacities that is analogous to the fitting treatment of (...) animals. I contend that my view overcomes standard objections to the use of the concept of animalization and show how, despite surface similarities, animalization is different from both objectification and infantilization. I argue that we get an account of social invisibility that best fits our practice of moral complaint if we reject orthodoxy and accept a quite different view of what it is to see another person as a person. On my view, seeing a person as a person is inseparable from caring about her in person-specific ways—hence from a disposition to a range of interpersonal emotional responses to her point of view. Thus, a person’s humanity is invisible to us, according (...) to this picture, when we are unreceptive to her power to influence our attitudes and will through her own attitudes and will. (shrink)

I extend my account of social invisibility and interpersonal recognition by applying it to one form of racism: racial alienation—the failure to emotionally identify with members of another racial group on the basis of their race. I argue that leading views of racism in the analytic tradition threaten to contravene the conviction that racial alienation involves a misrecognition of the other group’s humanity. The pitfall is best avoided by developing a conception of interpersonal awareness that is informed by Wittgenstein’s remarks (...) on other minds, particularly his point that our awareness of others as humanly minded consists in ‘an attitude towards a soul’ rather than in an 'opinion' that she has a soul. У статті розглянуто актуальне явище сучасної культури – взаємопроникнення кількох різних культур (в історико-типологічному сенсі) в Україні. Увагу акцентовано на вірменській меншині як культуротворчій діаспорі України. Досліджено роль вірменських музикантів у поліетнічній культурі України та їх самоідентифікацію у творчості. Увагу сконцентровано на проявах задіяння зразків класичного різножанрового мистецтва в сучасних творах та взаємодії українського й вірменського мистецтва в цьому ракурсі. Проаналізовано творчість вірменських музикантів, які спочатку як імпровізацію, а згодом і в більшості своїх проектів використовують прийом міксування етнічних елементів українського (...) та вірменського мелосу. Розглянуто зручні для імпровізації жанри джазової та важкої музики (jazz-funk, groove, death-metal, pop-jazz та ін.). -/- . (shrink)

У статті проаналізовано, яким чином перебування західної частини України у складі АвстроУгорської імперії вплинуло на самототожність українців. У центрі нашої уваги опинився роман «Фелікс Австрія» Софії Андрухович, оскільки він, на нашу думку, на прикладі стосунків Аделі Анґер та Стефи Чорненько добре демонструє справжнє становище українців у складі АвстроУгорської монархії. Стосунки між жінками ми розглядали генералізовано: як відносини між поляками, австрійцями з одного боку та українцями з другого. Важливим для нас було з’ясувати, яку ідентичність має головна героїня українка Стефанія Чорненько. Ми (...) також зважали, хоча і меншою мірою, за браком текстового матеріалу для дослідження, на самототожності інших персонажів роману. У статті йдеться про імпліцитну полеміку тексту Софії Андрухович зі «станіславівським феноменом», відомим ностальгією за часами Монархії: виявлено, що в романі є передапокаліптичні настрої. (shrink)

У статті здійснено спробу простежити генеалогію російського пропагандистського сюжету про «поїзд дружби» від інформаційного приводу до фейкової новини та від фейкової новини до сталої частини канону, послуговуючись яким, російська пропаганда говорить про анексію Криму. За допомогою понять інтеграційної та агітаційної пропаганди Жака Еллюля проаналізовано, у чому саме полягає пропагандистський потенціал цього сюжету. Досліджено, яким чином кінематограф перетворив фейкову новину, покликану налякати та мобілізувати населення, на стійкий пропагандистський сюжет зі сталим набором елементів. Оцінено перспективи його подальшого використання російською владою при спробах (...) розповісти тим чи тим способом про окупацію Криму. (shrink)

У статті проаналізовано лексемний і семний склад мікрополя «повага», а також його системну організацію в українській мові. Компоненти значення, що функціонують у мікрополі, відбиваають семантику поваги, пошани щодо об’єкта почуття, яким для лексико-семантичного поля «патріотизм» виступають Батьківщина, власний народ, його закони, традиції, історія тощо.

Останнім часом в Україні з’явилося чимало різноманітних довідкових видань. Очевидно, це зумовлено попитом на літературу такого жанру, а також накопиченням певної інтелектуальної маси знань. Українська історіографія теж поповнилася багатьма довідниками, однак серед них помітно вирізяється капітальна, справді наукова праця — двотомова енциклопедії «Київська духовна академія в іменах: 1819–1924» (Том 1: А–К. — К.: Вид. дім «Києво-Могилянська академія», 2015. — 740 с.: іл.; Том 2: Л–Я. — Там само, 2016. — 1004 с.: іл.). Як відомо, серед проблем/лакун історичної науки, що їх (...) дослідники мали прискореними темпами надолужувати/вивчати в присмерку радянського часу та на світанку сучасної України, опинилася духовна освіта. Причини цієї прикрої обставини зрозумілі, хоч до початку ХХ ст. такий історико-церковний напрям студіювали досить успішно, насамперед у середовищі Київської духовної академії. Сьогодні флагманом історії духовної освіти є Національний університет «Києво-Могилянська академія», де було відновлено могилянські інтелектуальні традиції. Тому закономірно, що праця, про яку піде мова, з’явилася саме тут. (shrink)

На відміну від Ван Гога, усі дороги якого ведуть у нікуди, ми віримо, що спроможні обрати ту саму – нашу дорогу у світле й заможне майбутнє, й усі наші зусилля не будуть марними.

The publication was carried out on the initiative and assistance of the Project “Green Decisions of Business - Unity for Sustainable Development”, which is implemented by the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Organization of Employers, in partnership with the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, the Dnipropetrovsk Investment Agency with the support of the Program for the Promotion of Green Modernization of the Ukrainian Economy, implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH. The purpose of the study is to reveal the relationship between the justification of strategic decisions and the increase in efficiency of transnational corporations (TNC). The conceptual bases of the justification of strategic decisions for increasing the efficiency of TNC are suggested, the development of which involves research of the preconditions on which their implementation is based, analysis of the main aspects of TNC's activity and accordance with the principles of justification of strategic decisions, strategic decision-making. The results of the (...) comprehensive diagnostic examination of TNC of leading bearings manufacturers are presented, which revealed the problems of their functioning on the market, changes in the dynamics of performance indicators, differences in the use of opportunities, financial state, strategic positions on the market, the efficiency of made decisions. A model for selecting a decision strategy for TNC is suggested. Practical recommendations of implementing strategic decisions for increasing the efficiency of activity of TNC of leading bearings manufacturers are given. (shrink)

The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of entrepreneurial initiative on the development of innovation activity of country enterprises. The theory of entrepreneurship by clarifying the essence of entrepreneurial initiative got further elaboration in the article. The methodical approach to the analysis and evaluation of the entrepreneurial initiative and its impact on the innovation activity of the enterprises, the results of which are the basis for further development of proposals to stimulate entrepreneurial initiative and development of their (...) innovation activity is suggested. The estimation of innovation activity of 1758 enterprises of Ukraine by calculating the integral indicator of innovation activity revealed its low level for innovation active enterprises. The method of one-dimensional linear regression has determined that an increase in the number of business structures per 10 thousand people of the country's population at a rate of 1.0 causes an increase in the indicator of innovation activity by 0.172. It is proved in the article that development of infrastructure of enterprenerial environment and creation of centers for entrepreneurship development act as an important mechanism of increasing innovation activity of enterprises of the country. The purpose of the article is generalization of features of expediency of the creation of innovative parks in Ukraine. Practical output of the results consists in the discovered success factors of the activity of innovative parks in Ukraine in order to create new opportunities of innovation development of the country. Current organizational and functional system of innovative entrepreneurship of Ukraine is an imperfect, complex and by all indications, is in the process of formation. It is assumed that infrastructure of international (...) educational innovative hub can structurally corrected according to the area which operates a hub that is: stimulate the dialogue between academics, businessmen and government officials; provide an interactive exchange of explicit and implicit knowledge; generate shared vision on adaptation measures of dynamic environment. Evaluation of the results of scientific and pedagogical activities of working group of innovative hub should be made for following indicators: development of skills of teaching and research work; introducing of innovative approaches for practical individual activity; formation of innovative approaches for collective practical activity; working on the chosen scientific and methodological theme. Main advantage of proposed university innovative hubs is that laid all necessary foundations in order to high school could be as soon as effectively integrate the results of university, academic and sectoral sciences of Ukraine, well as advanced research results of scientific world community in the development and implementation of innovative projects and development innovation.
