Developments in truthmaker semantics for the most part stay clear of the metaphysical issue of what sort of entities serve as the truthmakers and falsitymakers for sentences. It is assumed that perhaps facts or states of affairs (Fine, 2017a; Jago, 2020), with these taken sometimes as concrete particulars (Hawke, 2018) could serve for the job, but nonetheless that some such entities would do. In this paper I take a closer look at the issue of what entities could or could not (...) play the role of truthmakers and falsitymakers in standard truthmaker semantics (Fine, 2016, 2017a,b; Fine and Jago, 2019), based on desiderata imposed by metaphysical and semantic considerations. Agents know some but not all logical consequences of what they know. Agents seem to be neither logically omniscient nor logically incompetent. Yet finding an intermediate standard of minimal rationality has proven difficult. In this paper, I take suggestions found in the literature (Lewis, 1988; Hawke, Özgün and Berto, 2020; Plebani and Spolaore, 2021) and join the forces of subject matter and impossible worlds approaches to devise a new solution to this quandary. I do so by combining a space of (...) FDE worlds (Berto and Jago, 2019) with a Lewisian (1988) understanding of subject matters as partitions. By doing so, I show how subject matters impose some order in the anarchic space of FDE worlds, while the worlds allow for distinctions between contents which would not otherwise be available. Combining the two approaches, then, brings us closer to the desired closure principles for knowledge of minimally rational agents. (shrink)

The phenomenon of self-anger has been overlooked in the contemporary literature on emotion. This is a failing we should seek to remedy. In this paper I provide the first ef-fort towards a philosophical characterization of self-anger. I argue that self-anger is a genuine instance of anger and that, as such, it is importantly distinct from the negative self-directed emotions of guilt and shame. Doing so will uncover a potentially distinctive role for self-anger in our moral psychology, as one of the (...) strongest affective motiva-tors for self-change. (shrink)

In this paper, we discuss two recurring themes in Sosa’s work, reexamined in Judgment and Agency (SOSA, 2015) from a new angle, i.e. the place and importance of reflection in the cognitive economy of the epistemic agent, and epistemic value. Regarding the latter, Sosa suggests that knowing full well, which necessarily involves reflection, has value because it contributes to human flourishing. Although Sosa’s “new virtue epistemology” appears very promising in explaining different intuitions regarding epistemology and demonstrating that it is possible (...) to join reliabilist and responsibilist accounts of virtue epistemology, we believe that solving the value problem requires further clarification in order to truly explain the value of knowledge. The question “what is an interpretation?” is often intertwined with the perhaps even harder question “what is a scientific theory?”. Given this proximity, we try to clarify the first question to acquire some ground for the latter. The quarrel between the syntactic and semantic conceptions of scientific theories occupied a large part of the scenario of the philosophy of science in the 20th century. For many authors, one of the two currents needed to be victorious. We endorse that such debate, (...) at least in the terms commonly expressed, can be misleading. We argue that the traditional notion of “interpretation” within the syntax/semantic debate is not the same as that of the debate concerning the interpretation of quantum mechanics. As much as the term is the same, the term “interpretation” as employed in quantum mechanics has its meaning beyond (pure) logic. Our main focus here lies on the formal aspects of the solutions to the measurement problem. There are many versions of quantum theory, many of them incompatible with each other. In order to encompass a wider variety of approaches to quantum theory, we propose a different one with an emphasis on pure formalism. This perspective has the intent of elucidating the role of each so-called “interpretation” of quantum mechanics, as well as the precise origin of the need to interpret it. (shrink)

O presente trabalho tem por finalidade analisar, a partir do livro V da obra Ethica Nicomachea, se a justiça poderia ser tomada como um meio que irá auxiliar os cidadãos a desenvolver plenamente as suas virtudes. Buscar-se-á fundamentar que é através da justiça que os bons cidadãos seriam formados, bem como o bom caráter seria cultivado. Analisar-se-á, também, ainda que minimamente, o que Aristóteles entende de fato por justiça, de que o justo seria dar a cada um o que lhe (...) é devido, o que merece, haja vista que essa afirmação traz consigo um peso muito grande, pois nos faz indagar sobre o que seria o devido de cada indivíduo, bem como quais seriam as bases relevantes do mérito. Isto é, se o justo é dar a cada um o que lhe é devido, cabe a nós nos perguntarmos de que forma e critério seria usado na distribuição. De certa forma, ao raciocinarmos sobre justiça e direitos, consequentemente temos de raciocinar sobre a finalidade, o objetivo, o telos das atividades que circundam a vida social na Pólis. It is one thing to hold that merely statistical evidence is _sometimes_ insufficient for rational belief, as in typical lottery and profiling cases. It is another thing to hold that merely statistical evidence is _always_ insufficient for rational belief. Indeed, there are cases where statistical evidence plainly does justify belief. This project develops a dispositional account of the normativity of statistical evidence, where the dispositions that ground justifying statistical evidence are connected to the goals (= proper function) of objects. There (...) are strong intuitive motivations for doing this. For we can turn almost any case of _non-justifying_ merely statistical evidence into a case of _justifying_ merely statistical evidence by adding information about the dispositions and goals of the objects involved. The resulting view not only helps us understand when and why merely statistical evidence is normatively significant, but it also helps us understand how statistical evidence relates to more standard forms of evidence (perceptual, testimonial). The emerging view also has surprising applications, as it imposes limitations on the epistemic value of fine-tuning arguments for theism as well as undermines a standard class of case-based arguments for moral encroachment. Os minerais participam de diversas funções no organismo animal, tais como: ➢ Constituinte das estruturas esqueléticas (principalmente Ca e P); ➢ Na manutenção do estado coloidal da matéria orgânica, regulando algumas das propriedades físicas dos sistemas coloidais como a viscosidade, difusão, pressão osmótica; ➢ Regulação do equilíbrio ácido-básico; ➢ Componente ou ativador de enzimas de diversas funções biológicas; ➢ Na reprodução animal, dentre vários outros. Em geral, os solos brasileiros apresentam baixa composição mineral, principalmente de P, o que faz com (...) que plantas forrageiras possam não atender as necessidades macro e microminerais de pequenos ruminantes, como os caprinos. É importante destacar que cada mineral possui uma função ou várias funções no organismo dos animais, sendo assim, sua falta na ração pode ocasionar distúrbios que poderão levar o animal ao óbito. Entretanto, a deficiência mineral não é o único problema, em certos casos o excesso de minerais pode ser fatal. Dito isto, é essencial o conhecimento das exigências de macro e microminerais dos animais, bem como da composição mineral dos ingredientes da ração para que se possa fornecer uma ração que atenda os requerimentos do animal. Nas condições pernambucanas, onde os caprinos são criados extensivamente em sua maioria, os caprinocultores não se atentam a realizar a mineralização do rebanho, o que ocasiona perdas significativas de desempenho animal. Os que praticam a mineralização muitas vezes o fazem com suplementos indicados para bovinos, o que pode gerar distúrbios nos caprinos dado ao fato da diferença nas necessidades minerais das espécies. Doravante, formularemos um suplemento simples para caprinos criados extensivamente, ou seja, sob condições de pastagem. O peso médio do lote de 100 caprinos é 35 kg PV, em crescimento com ganho médio diário (GMD) de 100 g, os animais pastejam capim-buffel (Cenchrus ciliaris cv. Aridus). O primeiro passo é calcular o consumo de matéria seca (CMS), logo, com base em dados de DA SILVA (2021), o CMS pode ser expresso em 3% do PV ou pela equação: 27,8 x kg 0,75 + (6,75 x %de volumoso). Deste modo, o CMS será 1,05 kg (3% PV) ou 1,075 kg (pela equação). (shrink)

This article aims to indicate another possible comprehension of war and its relations in the Yugoslavian region. Focused on the construction of national identity, this paper uses the post-structuralist theoretical argumentative movement to invert the common logic of interpretation – to which Foucault and Deleuze are used as reference. Knowing this, the problem is how war, interpreted in another way, can build not only national integration, but also a subjective identity through Football.

The orthodox view of anger takes desires for revenge or retribution to be central to the emotion. In this paper, I develop an empirically informed challenge to the retributive view of anger. In so doing, I argue that a distinct desire is central to anger: a desire for recognition. Desires for recognition aim at the targets of anger acknowledging the wrong they have committed, as opposed to aiming for their suffering. In light of the centrality of this desire for recognition, (...) I argue that the retributive view of anger should be abandoned. I consider and dismiss two types of moves that can be made on the part of a proponent of the orthodox view in response to my argument. I propose that a pluralist view, which allows for both retribution and recognition in anger, is to be preferred. (shrink)

Knowledge implies the presence of a positive relation between a person and a fact. Factual ignorance, on the other hand, implies the absence of some positive relation between a person and a fact. The two most influential views of ignorance hold that what is lacking in cases of factual ignorance is knowledge or true belief, but these accounts fail to explain a number of basic facts about ignorance. In their place, we propose a novel and systematic defense of the view (...) that factual ignorance is the absence of awareness, an account that both comes apart from the dominant views and overcomes their deficiencies. Given the important role that ignorance plays in moral and legal theory and our understanding of various epistemic injustices, a precise and theoretically unproblematic account of the nature of ignorance is important not only for normative epistemology, but also for law, ethics, and applied epistemology. [Significantly updated in Chapter 7 of Awareness and the Substructure of Knowledge] Many have found it plausible that knowledge is a constitutively normative state, i.e. a state that is grounded in the possession of reasons. Many have also found it plausible that certain cases of proprioceptive knowledge, memorial knowledge, and self-evident knowledge are cases of knowledge that are not grounded in the possession of reasons. I refer to these as cases of basic knowledge. The existence of basic knowledge forms a (...) primary objection to the idea that knowledge is a constitutively normative state. In what follows I offer a way through the apparent dilemma of having to choose between either basic knowledge or the normativity of knowledge. The solution involves homing in on a state of awareness (≈non-accidental true representation) that is distinct from knowledge and which in turn grounds the normativity of knowledge in a way that is fully consistent with the existence of basic knowledge. An upshot of this is that externalist theories of knowledge turn out to be fully compatible with the thesis that knowledgeable beliefs are always beliefs that are justified by the reasons one possesses. Jennifer Lackey has recently argued that any adequate account of group justification must be sensitive to both the evidence actually possessed by enough of a group's operative members as well as the evidence those members should have possessed. I first draw attention to a range of objections to Lackey's specific view of group justification and a range of concrete case intuitions any plausible view of (...) group justification must explain. I then offer an alternative view of group justification where the basic idea is that group justification is a matter of groups responsibly responding to their total evidence. A description of consciousness leads to a contradiction with the postulation from special relativity that there can be no connections between simultaneous event. This contradiction points to consciousness involving quantum level mechanisms. The Quantum level description of the universe is re- evaluated in the light of what is observed in consciousness namely 4 Dimensional objects. A new improved interpretation of Quantum level observations is introduced. From this vantage point the following axioms of consciousness is presented. Consciousness consists of two distinct (...) components, the observed U and the observer I. The observed U consist of all the events I is aware of. A vast majority of these occur simultaneously. Now if I were to be an entity within the space-time continuum, all of these events of U together with I would have to occur at one point in space-time. However, U is distributed over a definite region of space-time (region in brain). Thus, I is aware of a multitude of space-like separated events. It is seen that this awareness necessitates I to be an entity outside the space-time continuum. With I taken as such, a new concept called concept A is introduced. With the help of concept A a very important axiom of consciousness, namely Free Will is explained. (shrink)

Outlaw emotions are emotions that stand in tension with one’s wider belief system, often allowing epistemic insight one may have otherwise lacked. Outlaw emotions are thought to play crucial epistemic roles under conditions of oppression. Although the crucial epistemic value of these emotions is widely acknowledged, specific accounts of their epistemic role(s) remain largely programmatic. There are two dominant accounts of the epistemic role of emotions: The Motivational View and the Justificatory View. Philosophers of emotion assume that these dominant ways (...) of accounting for the epistemic role(s) of emotions in general are equipped to account for the epistemic role(s) of outlaw emotions. I argue that this is not the case. I consider and dismiss two responses that could be made on behalf of the most promising account, the Justificatory View, in light of my argument, before sketching an alternative account that should be favoured. Os premixes são essenciais para o bom desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo das espécies nãoruminantes de interesse zootécnico como aves, equinos e suínos. São uma mistura de micro ingredientes que visam auxiliar a ajudar na sanidade e bem-estar dos animais durante o ciclo de vida produtivo, no qual os animais enfrentam muito estresse devido ao intenso cronograma de produção, por exemplo o alto fornecimento de ração para aves e, como consequência, o alto desenvolvimento corpóreo e muscular. A nutrição adequada requer rações (...) compostas por macro e microingredientes, às vezes incorporados em quantidades muito pequenas (UI, ppm ou mg/kg) como as vitaminas, por exemplo. Para garantir que esses micro ingredientes sejam incorporados aos macroingre- dientes de maneira homogênea, é necessário um processo de diluição intermediária por meio dos premixes. Esta pré-mistura é incorporada à ração em níveis entre 0,2 a 0,5% da composição total da ração animal; por exemplo, se o animal requer 1 kg de ração por dia entre 2 a 5 g será composta pelo premix. Existem programas computacionais que formulam as pré-misturas de forma rápida e eficiente. Lee Archie argued that if any truth-values are consistently assigned to a natural language conditional, where modus ponens and modus tollens are valid argument forms, and affirming the consequent is invalid, this conditional will have the same truth-conditions as a material implication. This argument is simple and requires few and relatively uncontroversial assumptions. We show that it is possible to extend Archie’s argument to three- and five-valued logics and vindicate a slightly weaker conclusion, but one that is still important: Even (...) if you do not believe in bivalence and the classical negation operator, you would still have good reasons to accept that natural language conditionals and the material implication share truth-conditions. Although it is now commonplace to take emotions to be the sort of phenomena for which there are reasons, the question of how to cash out the reason- responsiveness of emotions remains to a large extent unanswered. I highlight two main ways of thinking about reason-responsiveness, one that takes agential capacities to engage in norm-guided deliberation to underlie reason-responsiveness, and another which instead takes there to be a basic reason-relation between facts and attitudes. I argue that the latter approach should (...) be preferred. Not only does a reasons-basic approach promise to fare better in accounting for cases that its opponent struggles to accommodate, but it promises also to uncover a sui generis relation between emotions and their reasons which is at best obscured and at worst denied by its opponent. [Significantly updated in Chapter 6 of Awareness and the Substructure of Knowledge] In order for a reason to justify an action or attitude it must be one that is possessed by an agent. Knowledge-centric views of possession ground our possession of reasons, at least partially, either in our knowledge of them or in our being in a position to know them. On virtually all accounts, knowing P is some kind of non-accidental true belief that P. This entails that knowing P (...) is a kind of non-accidental true representation that P. I outline a novel theory of the epistemic requirement on possession in terms of this more general state of non-accidental true representation. It is just as well placed to explain the motivations behind knowledge-centric views of possession, and it is also better placed to explain the extent of the reasons we possess in certain cases of deductive belief-updates and cases involving environmental luck. I conclude with three reflections. First, I indicate how my arguments generate a dilemma for Errol Lord’s view that possessing reasons is just a matter of being in a position to manifest one’s knowledge how to use them. Second, I explain how my view can simultaneously manage cases of environmental luck without falling prey to lottery cases. Finally, I sketch the direction for a further range of counterexamples to knowledge-centric theories of possession. (shrink)

Anger is often an appropriate reaction to harms and injustices, but is it a politically beneficial one? Martha Nussbaum (Journal of the American Philosophical Association 1 (1), 41–56, 2015, Anger and Forgiveness. Oxford University Press, 2016) has argued that, although anger is useful in initially recruiting agents for action, anger is typically counterproductive to securing the political aims of those harmed. After the initial shockwave of outrage, Nussbaum argues that to be effective at enacting positive social change, groups and individuals (...) alike, must move quickly out of the state of anger. Feminist theorists (Frye, The Politics of Reality. Crossing Press, 1983; Lorde, 1997; Narayan, Hypatia 3 (2): 31–48, 1988) on the other hand have for long highlighted the efficacy of anger, as well as its moral and epistemic value, in fighting against the oppressive status quo. It might be thought therefore that for political action to be effective, a continued state of anger is preferable. Protestors must after all create and sustain a sense of moral obligation and justice. A main way of doing so is to promote successive moral shocks that trigger outrage (Jasper, Emotion Review 6 (3): 208–213, 2014). I present a novel, empirically informed defense of anger’s efficacy in political action. Nussbaum holds a traditional view on the nature of anger, inherited from Aristotle and the Stoics, which holds that anger constitutively involves a desire for retribution. The view that anger is counterproductive falls out of this and is dominant in academic work as well as in our personal and political lives. Based on work in social psychology, I argue that we need to reconsider this. In doing so, I highlight anger’s aim for recognition, rather than retribution, as key. Furthermore, I uncover conditions for anger’s political efficacy, as well as reasons for why the traditional view of anger has been so pervasive. (shrink)

Mark Schroeder’s Reasons First is admirable in its scope and execution, deftly demonstrating the theoretical promise of extending the reasons-first approach from ethics to epistemology. In what follows we explore how (not) to account for the evidence-that relation within the reasons-first program, we explain how factive content views of evidence can be resilient in the face of Schroeder’s criticisms, and we explain how knowledge from falsehood threatens Schroeder’s view of knowledge. Along the way we sketch a reliabilist account of the (...) reasons-for relation (inspired by Alston) and show how it limits the applicability of Schroeder’s arguments. (shrink)

When a belief is self-fulfilling, having it guarantees its truth. When a belief is self-defeating, having it guarantees its falsity. These are the cases of “self-impacting” beliefs to be examined below. Scenarios of self-defeating beliefs can yield apparently dilemmatic situations in which we seem to lack sufficient reason to have any belief whatsoever. Scenarios of self-fulfilling beliefs can yield apparently dilemmatic situations in which we seem to lack reason to have any one belief over another. Both scenarios have been used (...) independently to challenge Evidentialism, on which what we may rationally believe is all and only what fits our current evidence. Here we tie the two scenarios together and explore what a knowledge-sensitive evidentialist approach to one implies for the other. (shrink)

In this article I argue that characterizations of anger as a hostile emotion may be mistaken. My project is empirically informed and is partly descriptive, partly diagnostic. It is descriptive in that I am concerned with what anger is, and how it tends to manifest, rather than with what anger should be or how moral anger is manifested. The orthodox view on anger takes it to be, descriptively, an emotion that aims for retribution. This view fits well with anger being (...) a hostile emotion, as retribution is punitive. I will argue that a different view of anger deserves our attention. On this alternative view, anger aims for recognition of harms done, rather than for the punishment of those who have committed them. I argue that we have reason to favour a strong view that excludes retribution from anger’s main aims. In addition, I offer a diagnosis of the reasons that led the retributive view of anger to become, and remain, orthodoxy. This diagnosis provides indirect reason to give my descriptive proposal serious consideration, for it highlights that the orthodox view has dominated folk and philosophical conceptions of anger for reasons that do not speak in favour of the view’s veracity. The view that anger is a hostile emotion will therefore emerge as in need of serious scrutiny. (shrink)

[This papers explores a novel case for the normativity of knowledge for belief – something that is compatible with the knowledge/factual awareness distinction I've explored elsewhere.] There are two different kinds of enkratic principles for belief: evidential enkratic principles and normative enkratic principles. It’s frequently taken for granted that there’s not an important difference between them. But evidential enkratic principles are undermined by considerations that gain no traction at all against their normative counterparts. The idea that such an asymmetry exists (...) between evidential and normative enkratic principles is surprising all on its own. It is also something that calls out for explanation. Similarly, the considerations that undermine evidential enkratic principles also undermine certain narrow-scope evidential principles. This too generates explanatory questions. I show how a knowledge-first view of rationality can easily address these explanatory questions. Thus we have one more reason to put knowledge first in [some areas of] epistemology. (shrink)

Ronald de Sousa is one of the few analytic philosophers to have explored the ineffability of emotion. Ineffability arises, for de Sousa, from attempts to translate experience, which involves non-conceptual content, into language, which involves conceptual content. As de Sousa himself rightly notes, such a characterization construes all perceptual experience as ineffable and does not explain what might set emotional ineffability apart. I build on de Sousa’s insights regarding what makes emotional ineffability distinctive by highlighting that in the case of (...) emotion the content in question is, crucially, evaluative. Evaluative content has normativity that makes the ineffability of emotion both particularly salient as well as particularly relevant, as the way in which an object is valuable is felt to be merited despite the experience’s ineffability. After proposing an improved working definition of emotional ineffability, I move to the question of how language and emotional experience interact, and whether these interactions can be evaluated in any systematic way. While de Sousa is pessimistic regarding the prospects of such an evaluation, I argue that if we move beyond an individual level of analysis it is possible to characterize cases where the ineffability of emotion leaves members of particular social groups vulnerable to a range of epistemic and affective injustices. I argue that we can similarly characterize cases where the ineffability of emotion holds radical potential to challenge and transform unjust social arrangements. I end by proposing that the representational content of emotion involves what I call ‘modal complexity’ and that this makes emotions particularly well-suited to play such radical roles. (shrink)

Various sexist and racist beliefs ascribe certain negative qualities to people of a given sex or race. Epistemic allies are people who think that in normal circumstances rationality requires the rejection of such sexist and racist beliefs upon learning of many counter-instances, i.e. members of these groups who lack the target negative quality. Accordingly, epistemic allies think that those who give up their sexist or racist beliefs in such circumstances are rationally responding to their evidence, while those who do not (...) are irrational in failing to respond to their evidence by giving up their belief. This is a common view among philosophers and non-philosophers. But epistemic allies face three problems. First, sexist and racist beliefs often involve generic propositions. These sorts of propositions are notoriously resilient in the face of counter-instances since the truth of generic propositions is typically compatible with the existence of many counter-instances. Second, background beliefs can enable one to explain away counter-instances to one’s beliefs. So even when counter-instances might otherwise constitute strong evidence against the truth of the generic, the ability to explain the counter-instances away with relevant background beliefs can make it rational to retain one’s belief in the generic despite the existence of many counter-instances. The final problem is that the kinds of judgements epistemic allies want to make about the irrationality of sexist and racist beliefs upon encountering many counter-instances is at odds with the judgements that we are inclined to make in seemingly parallel cases about the rationality of non-sexist and non-racist generic beliefs. Thus epistemic allies may end up having to give up on plausible normative supervenience principles. All together, these problems pose a significant prima facie challenge to epistemic allies. In what follows I explain how a Bayesian approach to the relation between evidence and belief can neatly untie these knots. The basic story is one of defeat: Bayesianism explains when one is required to become increasingly confident in chance propositions, and confidence in chance propositions can make belief in corresponding generics irrational. In this paper I lay the foundations for the construction of an affective quality space. I begin by outlining what quality spaces are, and how they have been constructed for sensory qualities across different perceptual modalities. I then turn to tackle four obstacles that an affective quality space might face that would make an affective quality space unfeasible. After showing these obstacles to be surmountable, I propose a number of conditions and methodological constraints that should be satisfied in attempts to (...) construct an affective quality space. In the United States today, much interpersonal racism is driven by corrupt forms of self-preservation. Drawing from Jean- Jacques Rousseau, I refer to this as self-love racism. The byproduct of socially-induced racial anxieties and perceived threats to one’s physical or social wellbeing, self-love racism is the protective attachment to the racialized dimensions of one’s social status, wealth, privilege, and/or identity. Examples include police officer related shootings of unarmed Black Americans, anti-immigrant sentiment, and the resurgence of unabashed white supremacy. This form (...) of racism is defined less by the introduction of racism into the world and more on the perpetuation of racially unjust socioeconomic and political structures. My theory, therefore, works at the intersection of the interpersonal and structural by offering an account of moral complacency in racist social structures. My goal is to reorient the directionality of philosophical work on racism by questioning the sense of innocence at the core of white ways-of-being. (shrink)

I provide a novel knowledge-first account of justification that avoids the pitfalls of existing accounts while preserving the underlying insight of knowledge-first epistemologies: that knowledge comes first. The view I propose is, roughly, this: justification is grounded in our practical knowledge (know-how) concerning the acquisition of propositional knowledge (knowledge-that). I first refine my thesis in response to immediate objections. In subsequent sections I explain the various ways in which this thesis is theoretically superior to existing knowledge-first accounts of justification. The (...) upshot is a virtue-theoretic, knowledge-first view of justification that is internalist-friendly and able to explain more facts about justification than any other available view. (shrink)

Do factive mental states come in degrees? If so, what is their underlying structure, and what is their theoretical significance? Many have observed that ‘knows that’ is not a gradable verb and have taken this to be strong evidence that propositional knowledge does not come in degrees. This paper demonstrates that the adjective ‘aware that’ passes all the standard tests of gradability, and thus strongly motivates the idea that it refers to a factive mental state that comes in degrees. We (...) will explore a range of structural questions that have been overlooked in regard to our awareness of facts, showing that the degreed structure of awareness has significant implications for our understanding of knowledge. The distinction between propositional and doxastic justification is the distinction between having justification to believe P (= propositional justification) versus having a justified belief in P (= doxastic justification). The focus of this paper is on doxastic justification and on what conditions are necessary for having it. In particular, I challenge the basing demand on doxastic justification, i.e., the idea that one can have a doxastically justified belief only if one’s belief is based on an epistemically appropriate reason. This demand (...) has been used to refute versions of coherentism and conservatism about perceptual justification as well as to defend phenomenal “conservatism” and other views besides. In what follows I argue that there is virtually no reason to think there is a basing demand on doxastic justification. I also argue that even if the basing demand were true, it would still fail to serve the dialectical purposes for which it has been employed in arguments concerning coherentism, conservatism, and phenomenal “conservatism”. I conclude by discussing the fact that knowledge has a basing demand and show why this needn’t raise the same sort of problems for coherentism and conservatism that doxastic justification’s basing demand seemed to. The basing demand on doxastic justification is a widely held and highly intuitive dogma of contemporary epistemology. In Silva [2015, AJP], I argued that the dialectical significance of this dogma is severely limited by our lack of independent grounds for endorsing it. Oliveira [2015, AJP] sought to defend the basing demand on doxastic justification. Here I explain why Oliveira’s attempted defense of the basing demand misses its mark. I also briefly suggest that there is an alternative way of defending (...) the basing demand. The alternative way is reconciliatory: it shows that most epistemologists may have been right to insist on such a demand, but perhaps still wrong to treat it as a dialectically powerful tool in the assessment of certain substantive epistemological theories. Conservatism about perceptual justification tells us that we cannot have perceptual justification to believe p unless we also have justification to believe that perceptual experiences are reliable. There are many ways to maintain this thesis, ways that have not been sufficiently appreciated. Most of these ways lead to at least one of two problems. The first is an over-intellectualization problem, whereas the second problem concerns the satisfaction of the epistemic basing requirement on justified belief. I argue that there is at (...) least one Conservative view that survives both difficulties, a view which has the further ability to undercut a crucial consideration that has supported Dogmatist views about perceptual justification. The final section explores a tension between Conservatism and the prospects of having a completely general account of propositional justification. Ironically, the problem is that Conservatives seem committed to making the acquisition of propositional justification too easy. My partial defense of Conservatism concludes by suggesting possible solutions to this problem. (shrink)

The special composition question asks, roughly, under what conditions composition occurs. The common sense view is that composition only occurs among some things and that all and only ‘ordinary objects’ exist. Peter van Inwagen has marshaled a devastating argument against this view. The common sense view appears to commit one to giving what van Inwagen calls a ‘series-style answer’ to the special composition question, but van Inwagen argues that series-style answers are impossible because they are inconsistent with the transitivity of (...) parthood. In what follows I answer this objection in addition to other, less troubling objections raised by van Inwagen. (shrink)

Attempts to solve the issue of divine action in nature have resulted in many innovative proposals seeking to explain how God can act within nature without disrupting the created order but introducing novelty in the history of the universe. My goal is to show how Aquinas' doctrine of providence, mainly as expressed in his De Potentia Dei, fulfils the criteria for an account of divine action: that God's action is providential in the sense that God is involved in the individual (...) and particular here and now. -/- . An argument is epistemically self-defeating when either the truth of an argument’s conclusion or belief in an argument’s conclusion defeats one’s justification to believe at least one of that argument’s premises. Some extant defenses of the evidentiary value of intuition have invoked considerations of epistemic self-defeat in their defense. I argue that there is one kind of argument against intuition, an unreliability argument, which, even if epistemically self-defeating, can still imply that we are not justified in thinking intuition has evidentiary (...) value. Knowledge-first theories of justification are theories of justification that give knowledge priority when it comes to explaining when and why someone has justification for an attitude or an action. The emphasis of this article is on knowledge-first theories of justification for belief. As it turns out, there are a number of ways of giving knowledge priority when theorizing about justification, and what follows is a survey of more than a dozen existing options that have emerged in the early 21st century (...) since the publication of Timothy Williamson’s *Knowledge and Its Limits*. This article traces several of the general theoretical motivations that have been offered for putting knowledge first in the theory of justification. This is followed by an examination of existing knowledge-first theories of justification and their standing objections. These objections are largely, but not exclusively, concerned with the extensional adequacy of knowledge-first theories of justification. There are doubtless more ways to give knowledge priority in the theory of justified belief than are covered here, but the survey is instructive because it highlights potential shortcomings that would-be knowledge-first theorists of justification may wish either to avoid or else to be prepared with a suitable error theory. This entry concludes with a reflection about the extent to which the short history of, arguably, failed attempts to secure an unproblematic knowledge-first account of justified belief has begun to resemble the older Gettier dialectic. A NOVA PECUÁRIA LEITEIRA – PRODUÇÃO MUNDIAL DE LEITE EM 2018 -/- NEW DAIRY LIVESTOCK - WORLD PRODUCTION OF MILK IN 2018 -/- Produção mundial de Leite em 2018: análise sobre o crescente aumento da produção e da produtividade -/- No mundo foram produzidos aproximadamente 843 milhões de toneladas de leite, isso corresponde à 843 bilhões de litros de leite produzidos em 2018, e comparado ao ano de 2017 que a produção foi de 812 bilhões de litros a variação média (...) percentual foi de 2,2% crescente (FAO, 2019), em 2015 foram produzidos 656 bilhões de litros, entre 2015 e 2019, a produção mundial leiteira aumentou em 28,5% aproximadamente, e isso deve-se à implementação de tecnologias, manejos nutricionais, sanitários e outras técnicas que fazem a produção leiteira ser cada vez mais promíscua todos os anos mesmo com variações e quedas produtivas em determinados países como o próprio Brasil. Vale salientar, também, que o crescimento médio anual é variável mediante alguns países produtores, todavia, essa variação média anual é crescente e gira em torno de 3 à 4% nos últimos 5 anos de dados obtidos (FAO, 2018). Os gráficos abaixo, tratam da produção leiteira mundial no ano de 2017 e 2018 por continentes; observe com atenção os dados obtidos pela FAO e atente às conclusões que se seguem: -/- Os dados obtidos e expressos supra são da FAO dos Estados Unidos, ele nos mostra uma ascendente produção leiteira dos continentes e a participação de ambos nesse mercado promissor. A Ásia, em 2017, foi responsável por mais de 40% da produção mundial de leite, foram mais de 320 bilhões de litros produzidos e um aumento percentual de 1,9% comparado ao ano de 2016; esse aumento aconteceu mesmo com o segundo declínio seguido da China na produção leiteira. Os países da União Europeia estão em segundo lugar com uma produção de mais de 224 bilhões de litros produzidos em 2017, um aumento percentual de 1,3% comparado ao ano de 2016, e com participação de quase 28% de toda produção global; todo esse aumento da produção e da produtividade europeia deve-se ao incremento de novas tecnologias aplicadas ao manejo das vacas, incluindo a atenção dobrada à sanidade e ao bem-estar dos animais. A América do Norte veio em terceiro lugar na produção e na participação mundial. Com uma participação de 13% e uma produção de 106 bilhões de litros em 2017, o continente conseguiu um acréscimo de 1,7% comparado ao ano de 2016. Os EUA é o responsável por esse grande acréscimo; produzindo em 2017 90% de todo total produzido e detendo um rebanho promissor de 9,3 milhões de cabeças leiteiras. A América do Sul, ao qual o Brasil está localizado, deteve a quarta colocação na participação e na produção mundial, participando com quase 8% de toda a produção mundial e produzindo 62 bilhões de litros de leite em 2017, uma acréscimo de 2,7% comparado ao ano de 2016. Os maiores produtores do continente foram o Brasil que dos 62 bilhões produziu mais de 50%, em torno de 35 bilhões de litros, mesmo com declínio relativo, o país ainda é um dos maiores produtores mundiais; o Peru e a Colômbia. A Argentina também é uma grande produtora, todavia, passou por uma crise leiteira, sendo o mesmo “marginalizado”, isto é, impróprio para o consumo. A África produziu em média 46 bilhões de litros de leite em 2017, ficando em quinto lugar na participação mundial, com quase 6% de toda produção global, não havendo variação positiva ou negativa significativa comparado com 2016. O continente oceânico (Oceania) produziu em torno de 31 bilhões de litros em 2017, um declínio de 2,9% comparado ao ano de 2016; participando de 3,8 da produção global. Esse declínio provém da Nova Zelândia, basicamente, que deteve um défice de 1,1% em sua produção, que chegou a 21,3 bilhões de litros; porém, o país continua sendo o maior produtor de leite do continente. A América Central produziu no ano de 2017, aproximadamente 18 bilhões de litros, participando de 2,2% da produção global; deteve um aumento de 1,1% comparado ao ano de 2016. Os dados supra, foram obtidos pela FAO que é a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e a Agricultura. Com ele, podemos concluir que a cada ano que se passa, o mercado leiteiro têm variações positivas e negativas, todavia as negativas subjazem as positivas e, sendo assim, cada ano a produção e a produtividade nos países e nos continentes ascendem em proporções significativas; e esse aumento demonstra uma junção de fatores entre eles a implementação de novas tecnologias, a atenção com a sanidade e o bem-estar das vacas e do manejo nutricional e geral das fazendas e propriedades leiteiras espalhadas pelo mundo. A partir de toda essa análise supracitada, podemos apresentar o panorama do leite mundial em 2018, obtido através da FAO, e analisar as ascensões e possíveis declínios dos continentes e enfatizar os países que obtiveram pontos positivos ou negativos nessa participação leiteira de 2018. Observe os gráficos 3 e 4 abaixo e, posteriormente, e atente às análises: Em 2018, a produção leiteira mundial foi de 843 bilhões de litros, um aumento de 2,2% comparado ao ano de 2017. O gráfico 3 apresenta os continentes e a participação de ambos na produção leiteira mundial. O gráfico 4 apresenta os continentes e a produção de ambos expressas em bilhões de litros. Com esses dados, atualizados pelo autor em questão, apresentam mais uma vez um crescente mercado que gera empregos e emprega tecnologia de ponta para aumentar a produtividade dos animais e, consequentemente, a produção anual das fazendas e propriedades leiteiras. O continente asiático, em 2018, produziu 347 bilhões de litros de leite, a ascensão de 4% comparado ao ano de 2017. Ainda continua detendo a maior participação na produção mundial, passando de 40,3% em 2017 para quase 41% em 2018. A ênfase aos países produtores serão à Índia e ao Paquistão. A Índia teve um aumento de 5,6% de sua produção comparada ao ano de 2017; toda essa expansão é proveniente de uma equipe de veterinários, criadores, zootecnistas e outros especialistas que empregam mão-de-obra qualificada, tecnologias contemporâneas para obtenção do leite, manejo, sanidade, bem-estar às vacas, genética de qualidade e manejo nutricional concentrado na alta produção e produtividade dos animais. O Paquistão, mesmo com dificuldades nos processos de coleta do leite e em demais processos, obteve um acréscimo de 3% de sua produção em 2018 comparada a produção de 2017. A China, por sua vez, obteve o terceiro declínio em 4 anos, o declínio da produção em 2018 foi de 1,1% comparado ao ano de 2017; juntos, a China perdeu 15% de sua produção em apenas 5 anos. Note que o mercado produtor do leite tem suas variáveis extremas e difíceis de compreender, pois, à medida em que um país como o Paquistão tem toda uma dificuldade de obtenção do leite, nos processos de exportação e de industrialização do mesmo, consegue alavancar sua produção em 3% em um único ano; um país como a China, que é ainda um dos grandes produtores leiteiros, consegue uma perda inaceitável em sua produção de incríveis 15% em menos de 5 anos; daí a importância e a necessidade de uma equipe que consiga conciliar todos os fatores supracitados como emprego de mão-de-obra qualificada para manejar os animais e elencar a produção. Os países da União Europeia conseguiram uma participação de 27,1% na produção mundial de 2018, obtendo uma produção de 230 bilhões de litros no ano em questão, um acréscimo de 0,8% comparado ao ano de 2017. A ênfase é a Rússia que conseguiu um acréscimo de 1,1% comparado ao ano de 2017 e uma produção de 32 bilhões de litros em 2018. A junção da produção da Rússia e demais países europeus supriram o declínio da Ucrânia que passou por uma crise entre a desvalorização dos produtos agrícolas e a baixa no preço do leite. A América do Norte produziu, em 2018, 109 bilhões de litros de leite tendo uma participação mundial de 13% em toda produção global e com um acréscimo de 1,1% comparado ao ano de 2017. Os Estados Unidos continua sendo o maior produtor do continente, sendo responsável por mais de 90% de toda essa produção, produzindo no ano em questão, 98,6 bilhões de litros. Vale ressaltar que os EUA, com suas altas tecnologias e o emprego de alta genética nos animais, conseguiu aumentar a produtividade das vacas por ano, passando de 10.525 kg/ano/vaca em 2017 para 10.632kg/ano/vaca em 2018. A América do Sul foi responsável por 7,7% da produção mundial, produzindo 65 bilhões de litros, um aumento de 1,6% comparado ao ano de 2017. O Brasil, por sua vez, reduziu seu aumento, passando de 1% em 2017 para 0,8% em 2018, um aumento no ano comparado à produção de 2017 mas um declínio comparado ao aumento percentual de 2017. O continente africano aumentou sua produção em 1,1% comparada ao ano de 2017, chegando à 46,6 bilhões de litros produzidos em 2018; obtendo uma participação de 5,5% na produção global. A Oceania, depois de passar por dois anos de declínios seguidos na produção leiteira, conseguiu um acréscimo de 1% comparado ao ano de 2017. Produzindo 31,5 bilhões de litros em 2018, a maior responsável por esse aumento foi a Nova Zelândia, responsável pelos declínios, a mesma expandiu sua produção em 4,4%, todavia, o aumento do continente não foi maior por causa do declínio australiano que foi de 3,8% comparado ao ano de 2017. A participação global da Oceania foi de 3,7% em 2018. A América Central produziu 18,2 bilhões de litros em 2018, comparado com a produção de 2017 o aumento foi de 1,1%. O México é o maior produtor da região e aumentou sua produção em 1,6% no ano de 2018. A região ainda participou com 2,2% na produção mundial sem alterações comparadas ao ano de 2017. Os dados supra, obtidos pela FAO, traduzidos e atualizados pelo autor em questão, demonstram que o mercado do leite continua sendo promissor e empregador de milhares e milhões de empregos por todo o planeta. Como citado anteriormente, a junção de profissionais, potencial genético dos animais, sanidade, medicina preventiva, medidas profiláticas, bem-estar dos animais entre outros fatores tiveram impacto direto na alta produção e produtividade dos animais e na lucratividade dos países produtores que industrializam o leite ou mantém um mercado exportador do mesmo ou do leite in natura. Os países desenvolvidos responsáveis por 2/3 (dois terços) da produção mundial, isto é, produtores de 570 bilhões de litros, apresentam taxa de crescimento variável conforme as implicações nas propriedades e no mercado, porém essa taxa de variação de crescimento gira em torno de 0,5 à 1% ao ano e produtividade média entre 6.000-7000 litros/vaca/ano. Esses países, principalmente os europeus e os EUA, contam com elevados subsídios, que vêm apresentando tendência declinante nos últimos anos conforme apontam especialistas (FAO, 2019). Nos países subdesenvolvidos, em desenvolvimento, a produção em 2018 foi de 270 bilhões de litros e a taxa de crescimento é de 3-5% ao ano muito superior aos países já desenvolvidos. A produtividade, de 1500-2500 litros/vaca/ano, também vem se elevando nos países em desenvolvimento, em média 3-4% ao ano, contribuindo com major volume para a oferta mundial de leite. Observe a tabela construída a partir dos dados da FAO da produção mundial de países desenvolvidos e subdesenvolvidos de 2007 a 2018: Tabela 1: Produção mundial de leite em países desenvolvidos e subdesenvolvidos, 2007-2018. FONTE: FAO. Os dados da tabela atribuem ao avanço da produção de leite, bem como a análise sobre a crescente produção leiteira dos países em desenvolvimento. Especialistas apontam que a crescente produção dos países subdesenvolvidos e a implementação de técnicas mais especializadas e qualificadas terá uma consequência, essa será a equidade da produção com os países desenvolvidos e, futuramente, a produção leiteira dos países subdesenvolvidos ultrapassará a produção dos países já desenvolvidos. Nos países desenvolvidos, a produção leiteira passou de 334 bilhões para 504 bilhões de litros, ou seja, um aumento de 50% em média, já nos países subdesenvolvidos o aumento passou de 227 bilhões em 2007 para 336 bilhões de litros em 2018, um acréscimo de 48% na produção. Esses dados nos mostram que o aumento da produção nos países desenvolvidos já é alcançado na mesma escala pelos países em desenvolvimento; sendo assim, ambos estão empregando técnicas para facilitar a obtenção do leite e para ascender a produtividade de cada vaca leiteira de sua região. O aumento do volume de leite produzido nos países em desenvolvimento deve-se principalmente ao crescimento da Índia (5,6%) e Paquistão (3%) na Ásia, do Quênia na África e do Brasil (0,8%) na América do Sul. Os países considerados desenvolvidos apresentaram um crescimento grande e pouco superior aos subdesenvolvidos, e os maiores responsáveis por esse crescimento nos últimos anos foram a Rússia com 32 bilhões de litros, os EUA com quase 100 bilhões de litros produzidos ou 1/5 da produção dos países desenvolvidos, a Alemanha com acréscimo em sua produção, bem como a França, a Inglaterra e o aumento de 4,4% da Nova Zelândia. A redução da produção de leite em alguns países da União Europeia como a Ucrânia e da China na Ásia pode ser parcialmente atribuída às reformas políticas que culminaram em diminuição gradativa de subsídios a desvalorização de produtos agrícolas e, consequentemente a baixa no preço do leite, e também por serem países com menor competitividade em custo de produção. Além disso, os países europeus estão entre os que apresentam maiores níveis de produtividade média do rebanho, indicando alto grau de incorporação de tecnologia e dificuldade de expansão da produção. A Rússia foi um país que mais contribuiu negativamente para a redução da participação europeia, com quedas de dois bilhões de litros em 5 anos como aconteceu entre 2002-2007, porém, a mesma está investindo potencialmente em seu rebanho e em mão-de-obra qualificada para transformar seu rebanho em altos potenciais genéticos para a produção leiteira e é o que visa aos dias de hoje quanto a participação do pais na produção leiteira atual. Sobre essa queda da produção russa, com o fim da URSS, o setor lácteo na Rússia passou por um processo de reorganização e competição capitalista primordialmente com os EUA. Todas as ineficiências anteriormente mascaradas pelo regime comunista apareceram, exigindo do setor privado melhorias de qualidade, investimento em máquinas, equipamentos e qualificação de mão-de-obra. O reflexo imediato foi a redução significativa do rebanho e queda da produção de leite. O mesmo movimento ocorreu na Ucrânia, que também contribuiu para a perda da participação europeia na oferta global desde os anos 2000 até os dias atuais. A produção de leite ocorre em todos os países do mundo, porém a heterogeneidade do processo produtivo e volume de produção entre os diferentes países é marcante. A produção mundial em 2017 foi de 812 bilhões de litros e esses países corresponderam a 45% do volume mundial, quase a metade de toda produção. O Brasil, em 2017, ocupou a quarta colocação, com uma produção aproximada de 34,3 bilhões de litros anuais, que reapresentou 4,5% da produção total no mundo; em 2018 essa produção foi de mais de 36 bilhões de litros e uma queda na participação mundial, passando para 4,25%. Como conclusão, são infinitas as mudanças geográficas da produção de leite no mundo, o que ocasiona grandes diferenças nos sistemas produtivos e no volume produzido nos diversos países; consequentemente essas transformações causam mudanças na oferta do produto e o surgimento de países produtores de leite com maior competitividade, possibilidades de incorporação de tecnologia e estratégias definidas de inserção no mercado internacional. A vida pragmática social ganhou novos moldes e formatos específicos, isto é, formas de produção e produtividade, de ignição, de cultura e de dispêndio foram moldados e constituídas ao longo dos últimos cinco séculos da humanidade, outorgando uma (...) feição própria e particular à sociedade capitalista, sendo ela divergente de todas que a precederam. Não obstante, o sistema capitalista teve seus primórdios nas sociedades feudais, estruturadas em torno do labor servil e da produção agrícola fixadas nos feudos. Ao longo do passar dos anos, novas ânsias ligadas ao comércio e ao mercado estabeleceram-se como âmago central da novíssima sociedade capitalista que se estruturalizava. As urbes feudais cambiaram a vida no campo, as manufaturas e, posteriormente, as indústrias comutaram os nexos de produção da antiga sociedade, e o consumo ganhou simetrias cada vez maiores ante a inópia de desenvolvimento da produção de produtos e mercadorias. A vida em sodalício desenvolveu-se alicerçada em um encadeamento de acontecimentos históricos. A sociedade tal qual vivemos na atualidade é proveniente de diversas mutações históricas engendradas nos séculos que se passaram. A acumulação de sapiências sociais designou o conjunto de condutas sociais, inópias, padrões culturais e de comportamento, organizações simétricas políticas e do conhecimento científico que representamos atualmente. A produção e a imitação social é proveniente de uma síntese de eventos históricos. A produção da Sociologia resulta-se do dinamismo de consolidação da sociedade capitalista. Logo, essa gleba de estudo, só se pôde manifestar-se mediante a existência de unidades sociais necessárias para o seu surgimento e desenvolvimento. Como todo e qualquer fato histórico, a gênese da Sociologia tem conexão direta com as inópias sociais que manifestaram-se no momento da sua iniciação. Logo, como conclusão, a gênese da Sociologia está concernentemente ligada à própria configuração de como o capitalismo se desenvolveu ao passo dos séculos XIX e XX. A indústria obteve grande crescimento, o que proporcionou a transformação dos modos de vida em sodalício. No continente europeu, ao passo do século XVIII, a pragmática da sociedade era proferida pela indústria de tecidos, e um dos desígnios da ciência era a fomentação da produção de mercadorias, com o intuito de torná-las mais categóricas, rápidas e baratas. A partir da introdução das máquinas, a produtividade elencou impulsivamente, e o proletário foi impulsionado a trabalhar no mesmo ritmo que as máquinas. À analogia da cisão do trabalho na indústria, proporcionou a divisão do conhecimento científico. Uma vez que, novas práticas científicas e novas figurações de conhecimento da sociedade seguiram o modelo do desenvolvimento industrial. Logo, as metamorfoses produtivas influenciaram-se e foram impulsionadas mediante a gênese da Sociologia e demais Ciências Sociais, como a Antropologia, a Economia e a Ciência Política. Mediante os fatos que ocorrera, raiaram-se os três alicerces do pensamento clássico da Sociologia: Émile Durkheim (1858-1917), Max Weber (1864-1920) e Karl Marx (1818-1883). Ao bel país alemão, ao passo do século XIX, Karl Marx aclarava a ideia de que as condições materiais de existência eram deliberadas na vida pragmática em sodalício. Segundo Marx, a humanidade é circunspecta por realizar sua própria história de vida. Com isso, não haveria espaço para um destino predeterminado em quaisquer esfera. O embate entre facções sociais com interesses divergentes entre si concebe a base da mudança e metamorfoses sociais. Logo, as elucidações alicerçadas na fé devem dar lugar à ideologias de que a vida pragmática sodalícia é engendrada pelo embate entre as fracções com interesses distintos. Essas faculdades sociais heterogêneas são as que determinam as metamorfoses históricas e organizam o modo de vida de cada sociedade. Em contrapartida, o sociólogo francês Émile Durkheim, no final do século XIX e início do século XX, apropinquou a Sociologia da metodologia das Ciências Naturais. Para Durkheim, o corpo social era como uma espécime viva, e cada compartimento dessa espécime é conectada com a totalidade em geral (o organismo social) ao passo em que dependia dele. A assimilação social foi um tema de grande discussão nas obras do autor, uma vez que ele considerava que o corpo social exercia uma faculdade (uma coerção) sobre os indivíduos, modelando-os de acordo com sua similitude. Na introdução do século XX, Max Weber arrevesou a base geral de Durkheim. Em lugar de cogitar o corpo social espelhada nos indivíduos, Weber tencionava que as ações dos indivíduos eram estruturadas e orientadas por outras ações, ou seja, um fato social tinha como espelho um conjunto de demais outros fatos. Logo, a ação/fato social tal qual era influenciada por outras ações solitárias, bem como as influenciava. O autor constituiu, assim, a ação social como desígnio principal de sua perspectiva sociológica. Breve conclusões Como pôde-se analisar, a gênese da Sociologia está diretamente ligada com a história do capitalismo, particularmente ligada à ascensão industrial e política do século XIX. Logo, podemos dizer que a Sociologia raiou-se em razão dessa ascensão e pela inevitabilidade de elucidação das diversas metamorfoses sociais ocorridas no século XIX. Marx cooperou para a investigação do capitalismo na medida em que também designou uma teoria em que o corpo social passou a ser compreendida como decorrência de lutas sociais divergentes. Já o francês Durkheim, buscou elucidar o desarranjo provocado pelas metamorfoses sociais, procurando a unidade em um mundo progressivamente aquinhoado pelo fracionamento do trabalho. Seus estudos buscaram a ordenação de um corpo social caótico, sempre com a finalidade de encontrar um estado de estabilidade social. Por fim, Weber entendeu que a Sociologia careceria partir do ponto de vista da ação do indivíduo, sem que ocorresse uma divergência entre o indivíduo e o corpo social. Para o sociólogo e economista, as normas sociais são manifestadas a partir do momento em que os indivíduos as manifesta. Logo, a ação peculiar, portanto, é sempre condicionada pela ação de outrem. Contemporary debates on divine action tend to focus on finding a space in nature where there would be no natural causes, where nature offers indeterminacy, openness, and potentiality, to place God’s action. These places are found through the natural sciences, in particular quantum mechanics. God’s action is then located in those ontological ”causal-gaps’ offered by certain interpretations of quantum mechanics. In this view, God would determine what is left underdetermined in nature without disrupting the laws of nature. These contemporary proposals (...) evidence at least two unexamined assumptions, which frame the discussion in such a way that they portray God as acting as a secondary cause or a ”cause among causes’. God is somewhat required to act within these ”gaps’, binding God to the laws of nature, and placing God’s action at the level of secondary causes. I suggest that understanding God’s action, following Thomas Aquinas, in terms of primary and secondary causation could help dissolve this difficulty. Aquinas moves away from this objection by suggesting to speak of an analogical notion of cause, allowing for an analogical understanding of God’s causality in nature. With a radically different understanding of the interplay between secondary causes and God, Aquinas manages to avoid conceiving God as a cause among causes, keeping the distinctive transcendent character of God’s causality safe from objections. Many commentators have understood Philippians 3:2 as a clear warning against Judaizers. This verse, however, admits of other interpretations. And indeed, some commentators have suggested new readings for this passage. For example, one author suggested that the apostle might have had the Cynic philosophers in mind. Others thought that Paul distinguished between three kinds of people. This article aims to contribute to this debate by presenting the viewpoint of Norman DeWitt, who provides (indirect) evidence that the Epicureans were among the (...) main opponents of Paul and Christianity. And he assumes that after the evidence of certain symbols and elements in the language of the author of the letter, it can be seen that the infamous epithet in 3.2: "τοὺς κύνας" refers to the followers of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. In addition to Norman DeWitt, we sought to dialogue with other authors who deal with the subject and contribute to the reflection of this investigation. As methodology, a bibliographical study was carried out. As a result, it is emphasized that Philippians verse 3:2 is open to many identity possibilities. (shrink)
