The turn to descriptive studies of ethics is inspired by the sense that our ethical theorizing needs to engage ethnography, history, and literature in order to address the full complexity of ethical life. This article examines four books that describe the cultivation of virtue in diverse cultural contexts, two concerning early China and two concerning Islam in recent years. All four emphasize the significance of embodiment, and they attend to the complex ways in which choice and agency interact with the (...) authority of tradition. In considering these books, this article examines the relations between our academic claims concerning the self and ethics, conceptual or theoretical claims made in the elite writings of traditions, and the lived experiences of the people we study. The conclusion turns to our methodological foundations for studying these topics both comparatively and constructively. (shrink)

In a 1967 article, A. C. Graham made the claim that 情 qing should never be translated as "emotions" in rendering early Chinese texts into English. Over time, sophisticated translators and interpreters have taken this advice to heart, and qing has come to be interpreted as "the facts" or "what is genuine in one." In these English terms all sense of interrelationality is gone, leaving us with a wooden, objective stasis. But we also know, again partly through the work of (...) Graham, that interrelationality was of fundamental importance in the early Chinese cosmology and that qing, by later carrying the meaning of "emotions," expressed that interrelationality. I take as my project in this article the recovery of an emotional adumbration in the qing of early Chinese texts, notably the Mencius, from which Graham begins his discussion. With an eye to explicating qing in the Mencius, and with a sensitivity to an implied notion of interrelationality in early texts, I survey early literature from the Shu Jing to late commentaries on the Yi Jing. I find that usages of qing and contexts in which qing is used inevitably illuminate it as key term in the evocation of interrelationality, shading it with emotional overtones. Emotions, of course, are inherently interrelational, and even more so in a Chinese world in which the internal and the external are in constant communication by way of a cosmic interchange of arousal and response among all things. That qing, as a term which later comes to explicitly mean "emotions," should have a centuries old convention of emotional connotation prior to its explicit definition should come as no surprise. The corroboration of this supposition entails a complex investigation and analysis, however, and it is a preliminary step in this investigation and analysis that I undertake here. (shrink)

This study is about the musical thought of one of the most diverse and turbulent ages in Chinese history: the Warring States period of the Eastern Zhou dynasty. It is concerned with musical thought in two senses of the word: what the ancients thought about music--the role it played in shaping the self, society, and the natural world; and what was musical within the world of early Chinese thought itself--how beneath the constantly changing viewpoints and ceaseless argumentation among the different (...) thinkers and schools lay an underlying continuity of concerns and an unrelenting drive toward a greater unity of philosophical outlook, like so many variations built around a single melodic theme. ;Music was of vital concern to the early Chinese thinkers. Musical offerings played an important role in sacrifices to the ancestors. Musical ensembles formed an integral part of the hierarchical ritual system through which order was maintained in the feudal structure. Music constituted an important tool of the ruling class for instilling the masses with a sense of social harmony and enhancing the force of the ruler's appeal. Properly keyed music was even understood to have the power to influence the course of the natural world. And the structure of music itself informed the structure of rhetoric in subtle ways. Music thus readily became both a central topic of debate and a metaphorical agent of discussion for the various philosophers who would shape the discourse of the Warring States. ;Taking the theme of music as a focal point, the purpose of this dissertation is to explore the interaction among the various philosophers of the period--to trace the course of inspiration, development, adaptation, attack, and synthesis through the entire procession of late-Chun Qiu to late-Warring States thought. ;Works examined include: the Zuozhuan , the Guoyu , the Lunyu of Confucius, the Mozi , Lao Zi's Daode jing , the Mencius, the Zhuangzi , the Xunzi , and Lu Buwei's Lushi chunqiu. Musical thought in the Chinese tradition is frequently discussed in terms of the Confucian discourse on “ritual and music (lǐyuè 禮樂),” but how this Confucian discourse has been viewed by its critics has seldom been addressed. This paper aims to explore musical thought in the Zhuangzi as a serious critique of Confucian musical discourse. Zhuangzian thinkers doubt whether Confucian ritual music can avoid restricting music within a specific musical tradition, impeding the freedom to enjoy music, and distorting the nature of (...) music. Unlike Confucian discourse, which emphasizes music’s external effects, Zhuangzian musical thought ultimately leads us to focus on the essential questions: how to cultivate one’s own sensibility toward musical harmony, how to open one’s mind to comprehend different musical sources, and how to eventually reach musical Dao.
