    Au fost propuse mai multe teorii unificatoare. Marea unificare presupune existența unei forțe electronucleare. Ultimul pas în unificare ar necesita o teorie care să includă atât mecanica cuantică cât și gravitația prin relativitatea generală (”teoria finală”). După 1990, unii fizicieni consideră că teoria M 11-dimensională, identificată adesea cu una dintre cele cinci teorii ale supercorzilor perturbative, sau uneori cu supergravitația maximal-supersimetrică 11-dimensională, este teoria finală.
