What are the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary philosophy of technology, and how may the field be developed and improved in the future? That is the question I will address in this paper. I will argue that in the past twenty-five years, philosophy of technology has entered a new era. This era has arrived with new and distinct issues and approaches that differ from those that came before it. Many of the new developments have been for the good. Yet, I (...) will also argue, there are still large areas in the field that are currently underdeveloped or have been stagnant. I will identify these areas and suggest ways of moving forward in them. Technology is always limited to the realm of means, while morality is supposed to deal with ends. In this theoretical article about comparing those two regimes of enunciation, it is argued that technology is on the contrary characterized by the `ends of means' that is the impossibility of being limited to tools; technical artefacts are never tools if what is meant by this is a transmission of function in a mastered way. Once this modification of the meaning of technology is (...) accepted, then it is possible to relate technology, in a totally different way, to morality which is not about values, but about the exploration of ends. HENRI BERGSON (1859-1941), philosophe français, professeur au Collège de France de 1900 jusqu´à 1921, récompensé avec le prix Nobel de littérature en 1928. Ses oeuvres majeures, écrites avec un style parfaitement accessible au lecteur non spécialisé, sont : « Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience » (1889), « Matière et mémoire » (1896), « L´évolution créatrice » (1907) et « Les deux sources de la morale et de la religion » (1932). Dans ces études, Bergson élabore une vision (...) philosophique en opposition au matérialisme et positivisme scientifique. Concentrant sa recherche sur les intuitions individuelles, il prône la notion d´élan vital, lequel dirige le procès évolutif vers des états d´organisation de plus en plus complexes, et de là vient l´intérêt de donner prééminence à tout ce qui est spirituel et ouvertement créatif, sur tout ce qui est formel, fixé, fermé. Dans « Le rire : essai sur la signification du comique » (1900), il trouve que le comique est soulevé des que nous percevons dans les actions humaines les automatismes, répétitions ou dysfonctionnements qui contrastent avec l´essentielle spontanéité de la vie réelle. Le rationnel -plus qu'une garantie de cohérence - l'organisation de cette expansion. Irréversible, universelle, de plus en plus autonome, cette nouvelle phase de la puissance du rationnel mène au bord de l'incalculable; son processus tend à dépasser toute volonté humaine et investit jusqu'au langage. The term “social cognition” can be construed in different ways. On the one hand, it can refer to the cognitive faculties involved in social activities, defined simply as situations where two or more individuals interact. On this view, social systems would consist of interactions between autonomous individuals; these interactions form higher-level autonomous domains not reducible to individual actions. A contrasting, alternative view is based on a much stronger theoretical definition of a truly social domain, which is always defined by a (...) set of structural norms; moreover, these social structures are not only a set of constraints, but actually constitute the possibility of enacting worlds that would just not exist without them. This view emphasises the heteronomy of individuals who abide by norms that are impersonal, culturally inherited and to a large extent independent of the individuals. Human beings are socialised through and through; consequently, all human cognition is social cognition. The article argues for this second position. Finally, it appears that fully blown autonomy actually requires heteronomy. It is the acceptance of the constraints of social structures that enables individuals to enter new realms of common meaningfulness. The emergence of social life marks a crucial step in the evolution of cognition; so that at some evolutionary point human cognition cannot but be social cognition. (shrink)

Technology is even more than our world, our form of life, our civilization. Technology interacts with the world to change it. Philosophers need to seriously address the fluidity of a smartphone interface, the efficiency of a Dyson vacuum cleaner, or the familiar noise of an antique vacuum cleaner. Beyond their phenomenological description, the emotional experience acquires moral significance and in some cases even supplies ethical resources for the self. If we leave this dimension of modern experience unaddressed, we may miss (...) something of value in contemporary life. Combining European humanism, Anglophone pragmatism, and Asian traditions, Michel Puech pleads for an "ethical turn" in the way we understand and address technological issues in modern day society. Puech argues that the question of "power" is what needs to be reconsidered today. A quoi nous engageons-nous lorsque nous nous identifions à un personnage de roman, lorsque nous valorisons une institution ou adhérons à une théorie? Et finalement, quel(s) mode(s) d'existence(s) sommes-nous capables d'envisager et d'expérimenter pour nous-mêmes? Questions métaphysiques, questions vitales. La bioéthique est-elle une nouvelle “discipline”? Les comités de bioéthique constituent-ils de nouvelles institutions démocratiques? Y a-t-il une méthodologie bioéthique? Quel contenu pour une bioéthique laïque? Gilbert Hottois examine ces questions à la lumière d’un extrait de texte de Engelhardt, “Le problème des fondements de la bioéthique”.

Bien des lézardes ont depuis quelques décennies fracturé le monde tel que nous l'habitions, structuré par nos représentations, organisé par nos projets, coloré par nos attentes et nos craintes. La contingence et l'événementialité ont resurgi en bien des domaines, appelant une pensée de l'aléatoire, qui s'accommode de la pluralité de systèmes instaurant leur ordre local et précaire dans un univers en expansion... ou déjà explosé. Dans un monde en perpétuelle recomposition, les hommes se découvrent pris entre la turbulence des flux (...) d'où naissent et en lesquels disparaissent des formes provisoires, et la stabilité de systèmes générateurs d'appuis comme de contraintes. La Nature révèle alors, en son improbable complexité, sa fragilité, tandis que l'Histoire s'écartèle entre la montée en puissance d'une technique planétarisée, associée à une économie sans frontières, et le retour de revendications identitaires opposant aux rêves d'universalité la persistance d'oppositions élémentaires, voire archaïques. A nous de choisir notre route vers un avenir riche en possibles - y compris celui de notre autodestruction - et pauvre en repères. Encore faut-il d'abord prendre conscience de cet horizon nouveau, trop souvent abordé à partir de concepts et de schèmes hérités d'un monde forclos. (shrink)

This introduction to the special issue of Human Studies on postphenomenology outlines specific developments which have led to this style of phenomenology. Postphenomenology adapts aspects of pragmatism, including its anti-Cartesian program against early modern subject/object epistemology. Postphenomenology retains and emphasizes the use of phenomenological variations as an analytic tool, and in practice postphenomenology takes what is commonly now called “an empirical turn,” which deeply analyzes case studies or concrete issues under its purview.

Attentive a cette dimension, la perspective genre analyse la sexualisation des roles sociaux, politiques et economiques et la maniere dont l'egalite des droits est reellement respectee dans la vie publique et privee.
