  • Modal Sequent Calculi Labelled with Truth Values: Cut Elimination.Paulo Mateus, João Rasga & Cristina Sernadas - 2005 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 13 (2):173-199.
Cut elimination is shown, in a constructive way, to hold in sequent calculi labelled with truth values for a wide class of normal modal logics, supporting global and local reasoning and allowing a general frame semantics. The complexity of cut elimination is studied in terms of the increase of logical depth of the derivations. A hyperexponential worst case bound is established. The subformula property and a similar property for the label terms are shown to be satisfied by that class of (...)

  • The unprovability of small inconsistency.Albert Visser - 1993 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 32 (4):275-298.
We show that a consistent, finitely axiomatized, sequential theory cannot prove its own inconsistency on every definable cut. A corollary is that there are at least three degrees of global interpretability of theories equivalent modulo local interpretability to a consistent, finitely axiomatized, sequential theory U.

  • The Role of Quantifier Alternations in Cut Elimination.Philipp Gerhardy - 2005 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 46 (2):165-171.
Extending previous results from work on the complexity of cut elimination for the sequent calculus LK, we discuss the role of quantifier alternations and develop a measure to describe the complexity of cut elimination in terms of quantifier alternations in cut formulas and contractions on such formulas.

  • Indexed systems of sequents and cut-elimination.Grigori Mints - 1997 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 26 (6):671-696.
Cut reductions are defined for a Kripke-style formulation of modal logic in terms of indexed systems of sequents. A detailed proof of the normalization (cutelimination) theorem is given. The proof is uniform for the propositional modal systems with all combinations of reflexivity, symmetry and transitivity for the accessibility relation. Some new transformations of derivations (compared to standard sequent formulations) are needed, and some additional properties are to be checked. The display formulations [1] of the systems considered can be presented as (...)

  • Towards a Semantic Characterization of Cut-Elimination.Agata Ciabattoni & Kazushige Terui - 2006 - Studia Logica 82 (1):95-119.
We introduce necessary and sufficient conditions for a (single-conclusion) sequent calculus to admit (reductive) cut-elimination. Our conditions are formulated both syntactically and semantically.

  • Duplication of directed graphs and exponential blow up of proofs.A. Carbone - 1999 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 100 (1-3):1-67.
We develop a combinatorial model to study the evolution of graphs underlying proofs during the process of cut elimination. Proofs are two-dimensional objects and differences in the behavior of their cut elimination can often be accounted for by differences in their two-dimensional structure. Our purpose is to determine geometrical conditions on the graphs of proofs to explain the expansion of the size of proofs after cut elimination. We will be concerned with exponential expansion and we give upper and lower bounds (...)

  • Cut normal forms and proof complexity.Matthias Baaz & Alexander Leitsch - 1999 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 97 (1-3):127-177.
Statman and Orevkov independently proved that cut-elimination is of nonelementary complexity. Although their worst-case sequences are mathematically different the syntax of the corresponding cut formulas is of striking similarity. This leads to the main question of this paper: to what extent is it possible to restrict the syntax of formulas and — at the same time—keep their power as cut formulas in a proof? We give a detailed analysis of this problem for negation normal form , prenex normal form and (...)
