  2. Swahili conditional constructions in embodied Frames of Reference: Modeling semantics, pragmatics, and context-sensitivity in UML mental spaces.Roderick Fish - 2020 - Dissertation, Trinity Western University
Studies of several languages, including Swahili [swa], suggest that realis (actual, realizable) and irrealis (unlikely, counterfactual) meanings vary along a scale (e.g., 0.0–1.0). T-values (True, False) and P-values (probability) account for this pattern. However, logic cannot describe or explain (a) epistemic stances toward beliefs, (b) deontic and dynamic stances toward states-of-being and actions, and (c) context-sensitivity in conditional interpretations. (a)–(b) are deictic properties (positions, distance) of ‘embodied’ Frames of Reference (FoRs)—space-time loci in which agents perceive and from which they contextually (...)

Opponents to consciousness in fish argue that fish do not feel pain because they do not have a neocortex, which is a necessary condition for feeling pain. A common counter-argument appeals to the multiple realizability of pain: while a neocortex might be necessary for feeling pain in humans, pain might be realized differently in fish. This paper argues, first, that it is impossible to find a criterion allowing us to demarcate between plausible and implausible cases of multiple (...)

Abstract: Fish are important for both nutritional and economic reasons. They are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals and play a significant role in human diets, especially in coastal and island communities. In addition, fishing and fish farming are major industries that provide employment and income for millions of people worldwide. Moreover, fish play a critical role in marine ecosystems, serving as prey for larger predators and helping to maintain the balance of aquatic food chains. (...)

Identifying Fish Species Using Deep Learning Models on Image Datasets.Mohammed N. Jamala, Mohammed Al Deeb & Samy S. Abu-Naser - 2025 - International Journal of Academic Information Systems Research (IJAISR) 9 (1):1-9.
Abstract: Accurate identification of marine species is critical for effective fishery management, biodiversity conservation, and the aquaculture industry. Traditional methods of fish identification rely on expert knowledge and manual labor, making them time- consuming, expensive, and error-prone. In this research, we explore a machine learning-based approach to automate the classification of nine fish species using image recognition techniques. The fish species under study include Black Sea Sprat, Gilt- Head Bream, Horse Mackerel, Red Sea Bream, Shrimp, Trout, Striped (...)

Industrial Fishing’s Hidden Cost: Disrupting the Ocean’s Nutrient Balance.Bồ Nông - 2025 - The Bird Village.
For decades, industrial fishing has been recognized for depleting fish stocks and altering marine food webs. However, a recent study by González Ortiz et al. (2025) reveals a lesser-known but profound consequence: large-scale disruptions to the ocean’s nutrient cycles. By extracting biomass, fisheries are also removing vital nutrients—carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P)—that are essential to sustaining marine life.

How can we better understand the intricate web of relationships that bind people, nature, and the institutions that govern them—particularly in complex systems such as small-scale fisheries? A recent study by Schlüter et al. Monitoring bird populations and identifying species are crucial for understanding biodiversity, assessing ecosystem health, and implementing conservation strategies. Traditionally, bird species identification has relied on manual observation, which requires significant expertise and time. However, this process is often prone to human error and inefficiency, especially when distinguishing between visually similar species. 46. Materialism and the Moral Status of Animals.Jonathan Birch - 2022 - Philosophical Quarterly 72 (4):795-815.
Consciousness has an important role in ethics: when a being consciously experiences the frustration or satisfaction of its interests, those interests deserve higher moral priority than those of a behaviourally similar but non-conscious being. I consider the relationship between this ethical role and an a posteriori (or “type-B”) materialist solution to the mind-body problem. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that, if type-B materialism is correct, then the reference of the concept of phenomenal consciousness is radically indeterminate between a (...)

  48. Animal Sentience.Heather Browning & Jonathan Birch - 2022 - Philosophy Compass 17 (5):e12822.
‘Sentience’ sometimes refers to the capacity for any type of subjective experience, and sometimes to the capacity to have subjective experiences with a positive or negative valence, such as pain or pleasure. We review recent controversies regarding sentience in fish and invertebrates and consider the deep methodological challenge posed by these cases. We then present two ways of responding to the challenge. In a policy-making context, precautionary thinking can help us treat animals appropriately despite continuing uncertainty about their sentience. (...)

Octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish are remarkable creatures, famed for their intelligence. They are invertebrates—animals without a backbone—and are much more distant from us in evolutionary terms than our fellow mammals, far more distant even than birds, reptiles, and fishes. The last common ancestor of humans and octopuses lived over 560 million years ago. These animals have evolved intelligence by a different path, and their ways of perceiving and interacting with the world are very different from our own. This resource aims (...)

  50. Do We See Facts?Alfredo Vernazzani - 2020 - Mind and Language (4):674-693.
Philosophers of perception frequently assume that we see actual states of affairs, or facts. Call this claim factualism. In his book, William Fish suggests that factualism is supported by phenomenological observation as well as by experimental studies on multiple object tracking and dynamic feature-object integration. In this paper, I examine the alleged evidence for factualism, focusing mainly on object detection and tracking. I argue that there is no scientific evidence for factualism. This conclusion has implications for studies on the (...)
