In "To Bet The Impossible Bet", Harmon Holcomb III argues: (i) that Pascal's wager is structurally incoherent; (ii) that if it were not thus incoherent, then it would be successful; and (iii) that my earlier critique of Pascal's wager in "On Rescher On Pascal's Wager" is vitiated by its reliance on "logicist" presuppositions. I deny all three claims. If Pascal's wager is "incoherent", this is only because of its invocation of infinite utilities. However, even if infinite utilities are (...) admissible, the wager is defeated by the "many gods" and "many wagers" objections. Moreover, these objections do not rely on mistaken "logicist" presuppositions: atheists and agnostics traditionally and typically hold that they have no more--or at any rate, hardly any more--reason to believe in the traditional Christian God than they have to believe in countless alternative deities. The ancient Greeks already used to give ethnic names to their different scales, and observations on differences in music of the various nations always raised the interest of musicians and philosophers. Yet, it was only in the late nineteenth century that “comparative musicology” became an institutional science. An important role in this process was played by Carl Stumpf, a former pupil of Brentano’s who pioneered these researches in Berlin. Stumpf founded the Phonogrammarchiv to collect recordings of folk and extra-European music (...) and a dedicated journal, the Sammelbände für vergleichende Musikwissenschaft. Gifted in the field of science no less than in that of musicology, Stumpf developed an empirically-oriented approach to phenomenology, deeply divergent from Husserl’s and highly influential over the Berlin school of Gestalt psychology. A self-declared “outsider” among armchair philosophers, Stumpf experimentally investigated the perception of sounds and the origins of musical consonance. Developing the physiological studies of Ernst Weber on the sense of touch, Stumpf discovered that two sensations of tone, given at the same time, tend to mix in a certain degree. Musical consonance – he claimed – lays in this level of “tonal fusion”, not in the allegedly “natural” series of the harmonic partials of a vibrating chord, as suggested by the naturalists of all times from Pythagoras to Stumpf’s great contemporary Hermann Helmholtz. Accordingly, no musical system can claim for preponderance over the others: Stumpf’s researches in comparative musicology served to corroborate his theses on “tonal fusion” and the psychological foundations of consonance. Although Stumpf later revised and finally abandoned this theory, its permanent value lays in its opposition to dominant naturalistic approaches. The commitment for comparative musicology at the Berlin School is then no concession to a positivistic fashion for exoticism. The fundamentally Eurocentric stance of naturalistic theories of music is also fiercely contrasted by Stumpf’s pupil Erich Hornbostel, who suggests that music ought to be considered as culture, rather than as nature, and focuses attention on the eventually melting human cultures. The Berlin school flourished until the Nazis forced most of its exponents to emigration and, for tragically obvious reasons, heavily discouraged researches on these topics. (shrink)

This article interrogates how both visual culture and queer futurity can be made visible in and through the Philippine archive as a case in point. It begins by problematizing a paradoxical specter of futurity that seems to haunt more the Global North. But despite such haunting, the Philippines in the Global South continues to have thin to nil (i.e., nearly absent) envisioning toward a queer futurity, for most Filipino LGBTQIA + scholars seem to still be engaged in recovering “lost histories” (...) from the archives and “thick descriptions” of the present, while focusing more on the textual than the visual. The article then proceeds to discuss mobilizing ekphrasis and representation as main conceptual tools in bridging the temporally opposite projects of queer archiving and queer futurity. It analyzes through ekphrastic re-reading the various LGBTQIA + representations from the Philippine archive – that is, a “palimpsestic site” of colonial confrontations, national (re)construction, and potentially global queer critique. These re-readings along the archival grain juxtapose the archival representations as historically authentic vis-à-vis their more present-day representations as visual proxies. Yet more crucially, the potency of these ekphrastic re-readings – in lieu of visually actual – lies in their capacity to reverberate queer possibilities, re-awakening them from their sleep within the archives, and thus re-mobilizing them toward becoming a useful part of academics, activists, and artists’ “shared arsenal” in re-envisioning and, hopefully in time, reifying such past possibilities into future queer actualities anew. Comparing the passage of Aristotle’s treatise De anima, III, 8, 431b.21-24 and Ecclesiastes 3: 10-11, the author reveals a similar epistemological image: the universe is in the soul of the cognizing subject, for it embraces all existing things in the process of perception and cognition of the world.

Within contemporary evangelical theology, a peculiar controversy has been brewing over the past few decades with regard to the doctrine of the Trinity. A good number of prominent evangelical theologians and philosophers are rejecting the doctrine of divine processions within the eternal life of the Trinity. In William Hasker’s recent Metaphysics and the Tri-Personal God, Hasker laments this rejection and seeks to offer a defense of this doctrine. This paper shall seek to accomplish a few things. In section I, I (...) shall first set the stage for a proper understanding of the discussion. Section II will articulate the basic Trinitarian desiderata that must be satisfied by any model of the doctrine of the Trinity. This will help one understand the debate between Hasker and the procession deniers. Section III will offer an articulation of what the doctrine of divine processions teaches. Section IV will examine Hasker’s defense of the doctrine point by point. I shall argue that his defense of the doctrine of the divine processions fails. (shrink)

Pace much of the literature, I argue that Aristotle endorses what I call the ‘strong link thesis’: the claim that virtuous and vicious acts are voluntary just in case the character states from which they flow are voluntary. I trace the strong link thesis to Plato’s Laws, among other texts, and show how it functions in key arguments of both philosophers.

The idea that causation involves the production of changes due to the exertion of influence of something on something else—the core idea of causal realism—used to be the default view. Today this idea is at the heart of (i) transmission/causal process accounts, (ii) mechanistic accounts, and (iii) powers-based accounts. However, as I have previously argued (Ingthorsson 2021) the above-mentioned approaches are based—to varying degree—on the very problematic assumption that causal influence is essentially unidirectional; that it passes from whatever is the (...) cause to the effect. As first pointed out be Mario Bunge (1959), the idea that causal influence is unidirectional is incompatible with what is today considered a scientific fact, notably that all interactions are perfectly reciprocal; whenever any object exerts an influence on any other object, the latter simultaneously exerts the same kind of influence, of the same magnitude, on the former. Drawing on Bunge’s result, I have developed a fourth approach to efficient causation that accepts the reciprocity of interactions (Ingthorsson 2002 & 2021). According to this view a cause is not the action of something on something else that receives the influence, but the reciprocal action between powerful particulars which results in a modification of both sides, producing a new state of affairs. In this paper, I present the core ideas of the four different approaches to causal efficacy, what I think is problematic with the first three and finally attempt to compare how well the four approaches fare in explaining two often discussed types of causal interactions: (i) collisions between billiard balls, and (ii) how water dissolves salt. I argue that only reciprocal actions between powerful particulars can plausibly claim to fully account for these phenomena, in a manner compatible with the theories and findings of the natural sciences. Amos Yong claims that persons with disabilities like Down Syndrome will retain their disability at the resurrection. In section I, I will make some preliminary remarks in order to properly frame the discussion. In section II, I will lay out Yong ’s account of the resurrection and offer some difficulties along the way. Section III will examine what appears to be the main source of justification for Yong ’s claim. It is what I shall call Stanley Hauerwas’ dictum which states (...) that to ‘eliminate the disability means to eliminate the subject.’ In this section, I shall draw out three sets of bizarre entailments and difficulties that arise from Hauerwas’ dictum. Section IV will offer some concluding remarks and suggestions for further development on the doctrine of the resurrection from a disability perspective. (shrink)

I propose a reading of Berkeley's Essay towards a New Theory of Vision in which Molyneux-type questions are interpreted as thought experiments instead of arguments. First, I present the general argumentative strategy in the NTV, and provide grounds for the traditional reading. Second, I consider some roles of thought experiments, and classify Molyneux-type questions in the NTV as constructive conjectural thought experiments. Third, I argue that (i) there is no distinction between Weak and Strong Heterogeneity theses in the NTV; (ii) (...) that Strong Heterogeneity is the basis of Berkeley's theory; and (iii) that Molyneux-type questions act as illustrations of Strong Heterogeneity. In this essay, I analyze Romare Bearden’s art, methodology, and thinking about art, as well as his attempt to harmonize his personal aesthetic goals with his sociopolitical concerns. I then turn to Hans-Georg Gadamer’s reflections on art and our experience (Erfahrung) of art. I show how Bearden’s approach to art and the artworks themselves resonate with Gadamer’s critique of aesthetic consciousness and his contention that artworks address us, make claims upon us, and even reveal truth. Lastly, I discuss Gadamer’s emphasis (...) on the spectator’s active yet non-mastering role in the event of art’s address—an event that implicates the spectator and has the potential to transform him or her. This leads to a discussion of Gadamer’s notion of the type of self-(and world) understanding that occurs through aesthetic experience. I close by returning to Bearden in order to discuss how his art unearths a crucial feature of our being-in-the-world. I call this feature “world-unmasking” and show how it expands and enriches Gadamer’s account. (shrink)

We report the results of an exploratory study that examines the judgments of climate scientists, climate policy experts, astrophysicists, and non-experts (N = 3367) about the factors that contribute to the creation and persistence of disagreement within climate science and astrophysics and about how one should respond to expert disagreement. We found that, as compared to non-experts, climate experts believe that within climate science (i) there is less disagreement about climate change, (ii) methodological factors play less of a role in (...) generating disagreements, (iii) fewer personal or institutional biases influence climate research, and (iv) there is more agreement about which methods should be used to examine relevant phenomena we also observed that the uniquely American political context predicted experts’ judgments about some of these factors. We also found that, in regard to disagreements concerning cosmic ray physics, and commensurate with the greater inherent uncertainty and data lacunae in their field, astrophysicists working on cosmic rays were generally more willing to acknowledge expert disagreement, more open to the idea that a set of data can have multiple valid interpretations, and generally less quick to dismiss someone articulating a non-standard view as non-expert, than climate scientists were in regard to climate science. Each of the standard outlooks in the philosophy of perception --phenomenalism, direct realism, indirect realism, scepticism -- has thus been viewed as Hume's own considered position in the eyes of informed commentators. I argue that Hume does not ascribe univocally to any one of the traditional stances in the philosophy of perception, nor does he leave us only a schizophrenic or 'mood' scepticism. Hume attempted to resolve the traditional philosophical problem (or perhaps more accurately, to set it aside on principled (...) grounds) by transforming the issue from one of theoretical consistency to one of pragmatic coherence. Hume's moderate scepticism and his systematic naturalism entail a reflective 'return' to the vulgar (cp. T 223), a qualified normative endorsement of the directly realist beliefs of common life. The interpretive challenge is to understand the subtle nature of that endorsement, and to explain how it arises out of genuinely Humean doctrines. The account offered here attempts both to capture Hume's own considered position and to explain the attractions and shortcomings of each of the competing interpretations. After laying out the elements of Hume's account of perceptual belief (section I), I proceed to examine in some detail two recent attempts to interpret Hume as a realist (sections II-III). I contend that these revisionary accounts ascribe unHumean doctrines to Hume. The interpretation of Hume as an irreducible 'mood' sceptic or as a phenomenalist are in that respect both closer to the mark, but Hume's reflective return to the vulgar has recast the nature of the problem and leaves us with a position that is not reflected in the more traditional interpretations (section IV). Philosophers and cognitive scientists alike have recently been interested in whether cognition extends beyond the boundaries of skin and skull and into the environment. However, the extended cognition hypothesis has suffered many objections over the past few decades. In this paper, I explore the option of control extending beyond the human boundary. My aim is to convince the reader of three things: (i) that control can be implemented in artifacts, (ii) that humans and artifacts can form extended control systems, and (...) (iii) that perhaps extended control ought to be preferred over extended cognition. Using the objections to extended cognition as constraints on my own extended theorizing and the example of autofocus systems in cameras, I decompose and localize the components of an autofocus system that realize the central properties of control from a plausible theory of control in the literature. I then provide criteria according to which control can be extended in a system. Finally, I consider how this theory of extended control ought to be preferred to theories of extended cognition. This paper is a reconstruction and analysis of Thomas Reid’s epistemology, based upon an examination of his extant manuscripts and publications. I argue that, in Reid’s view, a certain degree of “evidence” (or, as I shall say, ‘epistemic justification’) is that which distinguishes mere true belief from knowledge; and that this degree of justification may be ascribed to a person’s belief if and only if (i) the evidence upon which her belief is grounded is such that she holds it with (...) “certainty”; (ii) she has a “sound understanding”; (iii) she has a distinct conception of the object of her belief; and, finally, (iv) she has formed her belief “without prejudice”. In The Principles of Art, R. G. Collingwood pursues, on the one hand, a ‘definition’ of art, and, on the other, a ‘metaphysics’. The Principles is divided into three Books. Book I is devoted mostly to craft, while Book II pertains largely to metaphysics. The fact that Book II is twice the size of Book III, where the discussion of ‘art proper’ takes place, is proof enough that the metaphysical part of the Principles is not a mere excursus. Collingwood’s ontology (...) is indispensable for understanding his aesthetics, and vice versa. The crucial link is the imagination. What Collingwood calls ‘total imaginative experience’ is described in the Principles as the sine qua non of both thought and sensibility. The aim of this article is to examine the ontological import of Collingwood’s conception of the total imagination. (shrink)

CATARRO GENITAL II E III -/- O catarro genital ou metrite (inflamação do miométrio) é uma inflamação inespecífica no trato genital. Existem duas barreiras que impedem a chegada de germes ao interior do trato genital. As barreiras de tipo hemático (diferença de fluxo sanguíneo) e imunossupressão parcial (...) originada pela progesterona, superadas as barreiras, podem se apresentar inflamação no momento do parto ou após o mesmo e frequentemente é acompanhada de retenção de placenta. A principal causa é a deficiência de fatores nutricionais, que causam distúrbios no metabolismo normal do animal. Os catarros trazem problemas de infertilidade, anestro, aumento entre o intervalo entre partos (IEP), o que acarretam altas perdas econômicas na produção (FRAZER, 2005; GORDON, 1996). Podem se manifestar em diferentes graus, que caracterizam-se por fatores específicos; serão abordados os catarros de 2° e 3° grau. 4.1 Relação Sódio (Na) e Potássio (K) Um dos fatores nutricionais associados ao catarro genital é a deficiência de sódio ou o excesso de potássio, o problema existente entre o excesso ou deficiência de um mineral reside na presença imediata de um desequilíbrio homeostático entre a relação fisiológica dos mesmos e portanto um desequilíbrio no metabolismo (funcionamento normal do organismo). A relação potássio:sódio (K:Na) ideal situa-se entre 10-15:1 (DEHNING, 1987) e demonstrou-se que à medida que se amplia essa relação se agrava a eficiência reprodutiva. Ao haver um excesso de sódio no organismo altera-se o equilíbrio de potássio:sódio (K:Na), aumentando os níveis de sódio os níveis de potássio diminuem, causando principalmente problemas na síntese de hormonas sexuais, que por sua vez apresentam um efeito negativo no ciclo estral normal da fêmea, além de problemas no parto (partos distócicos), isto porque no córtex adrenal deve produzir-se aldosterona para regular a homeostase mineral, devido ao fato do substrato bioquímico para a síntese da aldosterona ser o mesmo que para a síntese das hormonas sexuais, nomeadamente estrogênios, portanto, estes não se produzem provocando menor contratilidade uterina, o que favorece a contaminação e colonização bacterial típica dos quadros de metrite. Em média, uma vaca de 600 kg com uma produção de leite de 15 kg/dia, requer uma dieta com 230 g/dia de potássio. As concentrações sugeridas pela NRC para bovinos de corte com dieta de matéria seca (MS) é de 0,6 – 0,7% e a concentração máxima de 3%. Para garantir esses níveis de exigências, as forragens apresentam entre 1 % e 4% de K, portanto são excelentes fontes desse mineral. Em geral, os grãos de cereais são deficientes, menos 0,5% de K, no entanto farelos de oleaginosas são uma boa fonte de suplementação. O excesso de fornecimento de sódio (Na) é relativamente raro, mas clinicamente resulta em achados semelhantes de acetonemia, além de enfraquecimento, retenção de placenta, inflamação do aparelho genital e distúrbios no funcionamento ovariano. As forrageiras possuem um teor deficiente em sódio, uma vez que tal elemento é considerado prejudicial às plantas. Uma das formas de garantir a exigência de sódio no animal, é a disponibilidade à vontade de sal mineral (NaCl) em cochos espalhados pela propriedade. De forma geral, o consumo de sódio por animal/ dia deve ser de 20 a 25 g, o que perfaz aproximadamente 50 g de NaCl/cab./dia, considerando-se um percentual de 39% de sódio nesse composto. Vale salientar que o sódio têm função reguladora, portanto, sua disponibilidade não deve ser maior que a exigência requerida pelo animal. 4.2 Relação do Fósforo (P) Outro fator associado com metrite é, o excesso de fósforo (P) na dieta, pode ser dado por uma excessiva ou inadequada suplementação mineral, por intensa fertilização nas pastagens, por utilização de pastos sumamente jovens ou pelo consumo de grandes quantidades de grãos (soja) e cereais. Simultaneamente, com o excesso de fósforo é frequentemente encontrada uma diminuição do teor de manganês no tecido uterino, como consequência a diminuição da resposta do útero aos estrogênios (DEHNING, 1987). Estes, por sua vez, são responsáveis pelo movimento uterino e por criar maior resistência às infecções do trato genital. O intervalo sugerido pelas instituições de pesquisa está entre 0,12 – 0,20% na dieta de MS. Porém esse intervalo depende de alguns fatores como a idade dos animais e a categoria em que se encontram. O fósforo é um elemento que encontra-se em constantes debates em empresas e instituições agropecuárias. Pesquisadores da Austrália revelaram que 0,12% de sódio na matéria seca estaria o mais próximo possível dos níveis exigidos pelos bovinos de corte, o que contradiz os 30% requeridos pela NRC. Contudo, experimentos realizados pela Embrapa, concluíram que uma dieta em matéria seca de forrageiras com 100%, 70% e 40% dos níveis exigidos de fósforo, tiveram ganho de peso semelhantes. Por exemplo, os animais que receberam 70% dos requisitos tiveram ganho de peso médio entre 0,500 e 0,600 g/dia, muito semelhante ao mesmo ganho quando se forneceram 100% dos requisitos do fósforo. Nas forrageiras a disponibilidade de fósforo depende da disponibilidade do mesmo no solo. Nos grãos de cereais e farelos de oleaginosas contêm de moderado a alto teor de P, e nos produtos de origem animal, como farinha de peixe, o teor de P é considerado alto. 4.3 Relação Cálcio (Ca) e Fósforo (P) O caso de fornecimento exagerado de fósforo causa um efeito inverso da relação cálcio:fósforo (Ca:P), ou seja, sendo o fósforo dominante, maior será o déficit absoluto ou relativo de cálcio, cujas manifestações clínicas no aspecto reprodutivo correspondem amplamente com aquelas do excesso de fósforo. Um excesso absoluto de fósforo na presença de um abastecimento suficiente de cálcio é menos prejudicial para a reprodução do que um fornecimento de fósforo de acordo com os requisitos na presença de níveis deficitários de cálcio (DEHNING, 1987). Isto porque o cálcio, regula a contratilidade do músculo liso, como no miométrio. O intervalo sugerido de cálcio na dieta em MS está entre 0,19 e 0,33%, dependendo de fatores como a idade dos animais e o ganho de peso diário. Por exemplo, uma vaca de 600 kg que produz 15 kg/leite/dia requer uma dieta que contenha 40 g/dia de cálcio. O teor tóxico de cálcio na MS de forrageiras, leguminosas e gramíneas é de 4,4%. Para suprir a exigência em cálcio do animal, para que previna os catarros genitais em seus diferentes graus, bem como demais doenças a dieta está alicerçadamente entre o fornecimento de ração concentrada com misturas como farinha de ossos e fosfato bicálcico com elevados teores de Ca, ou entre os volumosos como as gramíneas, leguminosas ou forrageiras. Vale destacar que as leguminosas possuem baixo teor de Ca em sua composição, entretanto é maior do que a presença em gramíneas. A alfafa é uma forrageira que possui bastante cálcio em sua composição e que pode ser todo disponível para o animal. Por fim, os grãos de cereais como milho, soja, sorgo, etc., possui baixo teor de cálcio. O déficit de cálcio em vacas leiteiras de alta produção traz consequências como a doença da vaca caída (hipocalcemia) devido a sua alta exigência do mineral, especialmente após o parto, isto, por sua vez, causa uma inércia uterina que dificulta a eliminação de bactérias adquiridas durante o parto, propiciando um ambiente adequado para a multiplicação e contaminação do trato genital. 4.4 Relação energia: proteína e Vitamina A O excesso de proteína ocorre frequentemente quando a alimentação é baseada em pastoreio, especialmente quando os animais recebem uma carga intensa de fertilizantes (com estrume ou nitrogênio) e, simultaneamente, é oferecido um suplemento concentrado rico em proteína (DEHNING, 1987). O excesso de proteína depende da quantidade de alimento consumido, sendo os animais de maior produção os mais afetados, uma vez que passam maior tempo para chegar ao peso ideal de abate (animais de corte), ou quando sua produção é potencialmente leiteira. As grandes quantidades de amônio produzido pelo processo de degradação da proteína nos ruminantes resultam numa sobrecarga prolongada no fígado, aumento dos níveis da enzima GOT (alterações hepáticas; que por sua vez resultam na apresentação de catarros genitais de grau II e III) e altos níveis da enzima GLDH. Estes distúrbios são agravados quando, ao mesmo tempo, há uma deficiência de energia. O excesso de proteína crua faz com que nas secreções uterinas se produzam mudanças no conteúdo dos minerais e um desequilíbrio entre os mesmos causando problemas reprodutivos de índole infecciosa e diminui adicionalmente a capacidade de sobrevivência dos espermatozoides e óvulos. A deficiência de vitamina A, também pode causar catarro genital. Recordando que as vitaminas são um grupo de compostos orgânicos essenciais no metabolismo necessário para o crescimento e o bom funcionamento do organismo. Entre estas, a vitamina A é considerada uma vitamina lipossolúvel que deriva dos carotenos presentes nos vegetais. Esta afeta a formação e manutenção da pele, membranas mucosas, ossos e dentes, retina e possui íntima relação com a reprodução. No último caso há falta de secreção da membrana mucosa do trato genital, o que produz susceptibilidade à invasão bacteriana (catarro genital II e III). O corpo obtém a vitamina A, fabricando-a a partir dos carotenos, precursores da vitamina A, que se encontram nos vegetais (forrageiras, leguminosas e gramíneas). O fornecimento de betacarotenos depende do conteúdo dos mesmos na ração. E se houver deficiência destes não pode haver formação de vitamina A, assim a porcentagem de falhas no crescimento do tecido endometrial leva a catarros genitais, mortalidade embrionária e abortos precoces. Logo, mediante os trabalhos anteriores, o fornecimento dessa vitamina, quantos dos demais macronutrientes exigidos pelo animal por meio da alimentação volumosa ou concentrada é essencial para obtenção do sucesso contra esse transtorno reprodutivo do catarro genital, quanto de demais outros seja no combate ou prevenção. -/- REFERÊNCIAS BIBLIOGRÁFICAS -/- BARBOSA, Fabiano Alvim; SOUZA, G. Bilim üzerine yapılan tartışmalar her ne kadar geçmişten beri süregelmekte olsa da modern bilimin gelişimini gösteren bilimsel devrimler, bilim ve bilimsel bilginin ne olduğu tartışmalarını yoğun bir biçimde etkiler. Özellikle bilim hakkında yaygın bir biçimde ifade edilen geleneksel anlayışın temel iddialarından biri, deney bilimlerinin gelişmesine bağlı olarak deneyin de ön plana çıkması nedeniyle, bilimin temelinde saf deney ve gözlemin yer aldığıdır.

In this paper I explored the concept of ‘I(i)nternational R(r)elations’, with the aim (i) to show the two techniques of writing and their representation, (ii) the meaning that is attached to each technique; (iii) the process of creation of a concept based on two terms. -/- Through this paper: (i) I return to theorizing the concept of ‘I(i)nternational R(r)elations’ but from its etymological bases; (ii) the terms ‘relation’ and ‘international’ is based on a wide range of concepts that help its (...) formation, and I want to show this formation; (iii) I contribute to the existing literature that discusses the concept; (iv) I contribute to the historical development of the interdiscipline and (v) I respond to the crisis of ideas that haunts science. -/- If you started reading this paper it means that it is time to look with greater clarity and objectivity to all the elements and the process of creating a concept. In the debate over whether mathematical facts, properties, or entities explain physical events (in what philosophers call “extra-mathematical” explanations), Aidan Lyon’s (2012) affirmative answer stands out for its employment of the program explanation (PE) methodology of Frank Jackson and Philip Pettit (1990). Juha Saatsi (2012; 2016) objects, however, that Lyon’s examples from the indispensabilist literature are (i) unsuitable for PE, (ii) nominalizable into non-mathematical terms, and (iii) mysterious about the explanatory relation alleged to obtain between the PE’s mathematical explanantia and (...) physical explananda. In this paper, I propose a counterexample to Saatsi’s objections. My counterexample is Frank Jackson’s (1998a) program explanation for color experience, which I argue needs recasting as an extra-mathematical PE due to its implicit reliance on reflectance, a property that suffers conceptual regress unless redefined with Fourier harmonics. Pace Saatsi, I argue that this recast example is an authoritative PE, non-nominalizable, and minimally esoteric. Important for the indispensability debate at large, moreover, is that my counterexample reifies Fourier harmonics without the Enhanced Indispensability Argument (an argument to which Lyon applies PE as a premise). Indispensabilists have long overlooked the conditionalization of a limited mathematical realism on property realism, and my counterexample to Saatsi exploits this conditionalization. (shrink)

This month, the AISDL Team was glad to see its continuing effort to raise the voice for conserving wildlife appearing in Pacific Conservation Biology (published by CSIRO/the Australian Academy of Science). The article stipulates the need for weaving humane values with scientific information, leveraging the sociocultural power to harmonize humans with nature. The article articulates the coauthors’ idea of building a funding source to contribute to the nature conservation cause by investing in some listed stocks. Technically, stocks we intend to (...) invest in must possess some key features of (i) having significant growth potential, (ii) containing little environmental risk of potential moral-practical gaps in their CSR missions, and (iii) showing a certain degree of “relevance” with AISDL’s fundamentals. Reflectance physicalists define reflectance as the intrinsic disposition of a surface to reflect finite-duration light pulses at a given efficiency per wavelength. I criticize the received view of dispositional reflectance (David R. Hilbert’s) for failing to account for what I call “harmonic dispersion,” the inverse relationship of a light pulse's duration to its bandwidth. I argue that harmonic dispersion renders reflectance defined in terms of light pulses an extrinsic disposition. Reflectance defined as the per-wavelength efficiency to reflect the superimposed, infinite-duration, (...) Fourier harmonics of pulses can be an intrinsic disposition of surfaces. This conclusion raises questions about mathematical realism, about which I nevertheless remain neutral. (shrink)

In this article, author expressed the meaning of “belief”, possible effective factors in human life, and how these factors can be effective on person and/or communities. With this respect, the meaning of religion, the possible interaction and relation between religion and science evaluated. 42 past/present theories of religion and evaluation of the past/present works of the 87 philosophers of religion are explained. Author considered new synthesis (R-Synthesis), and also new era philosophy, new and re-constructed branches of philosophy, and some systems/constructions (...) to express the new perspective for philosophy of religion. Author applied 27(+) possible definitive/certain result cases of the synthesis for R-Religion discipline specifically, and did the followings under new perspective: (i) eliminated some religious subjects, (ii) unified some religious subjects, (iii) modified some religious subjects, (iv) united some religious subjects in upper phase, (v) separated some religious subject, (vi) defined all religious subjects under one framework, (vii) integrated all religious subjects, (viii) defined new religious subjects, (ix) re-defined some religious subjects, (x) removed some religious subjects and put new religious subjects instead, (xi) added some religious subjects, (xii) kept/protected some religious subjects, (xiii) proposed progression for religious subjects, (xiv) changed the priority of some religious subjects, (xv) increased the importance of some religious subjects, (xvi) strengthened the ethics, (xvii) integrated philosophy branches under one framework, (xviii) others. Some of the purposes of this article are: (i) to define new synthesis method, (ii) to define good and/or correct new perspective and structure for philosophy of religion, science of religion, theories of religion, and related subjects, (iii) to extend the definition/limits of philosophy of religion with new perspective, (iv) others. As result of the synthesis, new perspective for philosophy of religion explained by considering the following concepts/sections: (a) theories of religion, (b) 17 upper constructional philosophies and philosophy of religion, (c) eight complementary branches of philosophy of religion, (d) 14 lower constructional philosophies and philosophy of religion, (e) science of religion, (f) new theory of religion and its relations with other disciplines. Author defined New Era Theory, New Era Religion, New Era Belief, Progressive Religion and their relations with other religions, beliefs, religious/non-religious movements, and the relation with other theories of religion. Also, power authorities and functional position levels in the New Era Belief, and Religion of God, Knowledge of God/gods, Nature of God/gods concepts are explained generally/specifically. (shrink)

I present a ‘stage-theoretical’ interpretation of the supervaluationist semantics for the growing-block theory of time according to which the ‘nodes’ on the branching tree of historical possibilities are taken to be possible stages of the growth of the growing-block. As I will argue, the resulting interpretation (i) is very intuitive, (ii) can easily ward off an objection to supervaluationist treatments of the growing-block theory presented by Fabrice Correia and Sven Rosenkranz, and (iii) is also not saddled by the problems affecting (...) the supervaluationist version of the growing-block theory defended by R. This paper uses analytic philosophy to prevent merely verbal disputes about the concept of fiction within discussions on fictiones iuris. It provides a survey of potentially fruitful connections between legal fictions and fictionalism. More specifically, I will argue that by enriching current accounts of legal fictions in legal theory with insights from (1) the philosophy of language on fictional speech and from (2) contemporary metaphysics on philosophical fictionalism, it seems natural to explore the position that talk involving fictiones iuris is (...) structurally an exemplification of elliptical speech. Such fictionalism about legal fictions illuminates why prominent condemnations of fictions in law – e.g. as blatant falsehoods, shady fraudulences, or legal defects – are theoretical myths, since they fail to distinguish between analytically distinct (ontological, epistemic, alethic, semantic, and evaluative) levels. Moreover, a fictionalist account might even sharpen our sense of which legal fictions are more “innocent” than others. I will begin by introducing philosophical fictionalism (II), before the fictiones iuris will be characterized as an operation in legal reasoning by consulting the Leibnizian reconstruction of Roman Law’s epistemology (III). Sections IV and V seek to provide further clarifications on the ‘fictional’ / ‘fictitious’ distinction as well as the heterogeneity of fictionalist research questions. Section VI then contains a little guided tour through the different analyses of the concept of fiction(s) within fictionalism. Subsequently, I will show how insights from those discussions contribute to demystify some of the most prominent allegations raised against legal fictions (VII). Fictionalism about legal fictions, Section VIII tentatively suggests, might not only harmonize with both classic and recent treatments of legal fictions, but help to also highlight their epistemic values. The Axis II Work Group of the Task Force on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) has expressed concern that antisocial personality disorder (APD) criteria are too long and cumbersome and that they focus on antisocial behaviors rather than personality traits central to traditional conceptions of psychopathy and to international criteria. R. D. Hare et al describe an alternative to the approach taken in the DSM-III—Revised (DSM-III—R; American Psychiatric Association, 1987), namely, the revised Psychopathy Checklist. The Human Rights Studies Programme, School of International Studies (JNU), in collaboration with the Centre for Inner Asian Studies, School of International Studies (JNU), and the Indian Law Institute (Delhi), organized a Human Rights Day Webinar on the Intersections of Human Rights and Criminal Law on December 9-10, 2021. Experts and young scholars from the field shared their insights and research on the webinar theme. The presentations were organized under four sessions, including Session I on Rights Jurisprudence and Criminal Law, (...) Session II on Proposals for Criminalisation and Decriminalisation, Session III on Crimes, Victims, and Punishments, and Session IV on Reforms in the Future. The Webinar was conceptualized keeping in view the responsibility of states under international human rights law to prohibit and punish for the protection of human rights and the redressal of violations. The obligations of States to prohibit and punish inform the development of criminal rules and procedures under different legal systems, leading to the near universalization of legislative frameworks, legal justifications, and punishments. In the working of international human rights institutions, the criminal laws adopted by States are an indicator or marker of the level of compliance of States with the international mandates. In recent years, the interface between the two fields, i.e., international human rights and domestic criminal laws, has sparked great jurisprudential, political, and constitutional debates in different parts of the world. W tekście omawiam tę część internetowej dyskusji, przeprowadzonej w listopadzie 2012 r. na stronie Polskiego Towarzystwa Bioetycznego, która dotyczyła niepewności na temat moralnego statusu embrionów ludzkich. W trakcie dyskusji PTB na temat Stanowiska Komitetu Bioetyki przy Prezydium PAN w sprawie preimplantacyjnej diagnostyki genetycznej (PDG) pojawił się następujący argument: skoro spór o moralny status embrionu jest nierozstrzygalny, to powinniśmy opowiedzieć się przeciwko moralnej dopuszczalności wykonywania PDG na embrionach, a także przeciwko prawnej dopuszczalności tego rodzaju diagnostyki. W tekście omawiam tezy Stanowiska i (...) zdań odrębnych, które wywołały tę część dyskusji, a potem koncentruję się na następujących problemach: (I) dopuszczalność stosowania narzędzi teorii decyzji w debatach etycznych; (II) procedura podejmowania decyzji przez ciała doradcze w sytuacji niepewności moralnej; (III) znaczenie osiągnięć nauk biologicznych przy ustaleniu statusu moralnego embrionu; (IV) możliwość kompromisu w sytuacji pluralizmu wartości; (V) znaczenie statusu moralnego embrionów dla oceny moralnej i prawnej dopuszczalności PDG. In this work, author evaluated past theories and perspectives behind the definitions of science and/or branches of science. Also some of the philosophers of science and their specific philosophical interests were expressed. Author considered some type of interactions between some disciplines to determine, to solve the philosophical/scientific problems and to define the possible solutions. The purposes of this article are: (i) to define new synthesis method, (ii) to define new perspective for the philosophy of science, (iii) to define relation between (...) new philosophy perspective and philosophy of science, (iv) to define and organize name, number, relations, and correct structure between special science branches and philosophy of science, (v) to define necessary and sufficient number of branches for philosophy of science, (vi) to define and express the importance and place of new philosophy of science perspective in the new system, (vii) to extend the definition/limits of philosophy of science, (viii) to re-define meanings of some philosophical/scientific theories, (ix) to define systematic solution for the conflicts, problems, confusions about philosophy of science, sciences and branches of science, (x) to define new branches of science, (xi) to re-construct branches and hierarchy of science, (xii) to define new theories about science and branches of science. Author considered R-Synthesis as a method for the evaluation of the philosophy, philosophy of science, sciences and branches of science. This R-Synthesis includes evaluation of eight categories of general/specific perspective, 21-dimensions, and 12 general subjects (with related scope and contents) for the past 12,000 years. It is a kind of synthesis of science and non-science, physical science and non-physical science, religious science and non-religious science, and others. In this article, author defined 27 possible definitive/certain result cases for this new synthesis. Author defined the possible formation stages shortly to express new disciplines, new constructional and/or complementary theories. These theories are considered to define 21 major effective disciplines. New philosophy perspective is defined (R-Philosophy) shortly. New perspective and sub branches are defined for the philosophy of science. Major sciences are defined due to new basic philosophies. 42-basic components are defined for each science branch. New and/or re-constructed sciences, branches of science, basic sciences, and new hierarchy of science are defined with figure. Electromagnetic sciences, information sciences, and system sciences are defined specifically. Hybrid Sciences, New Era Science, and Ideal Scientific System are defined with general/specific figure. Relation between the some old branches and new branches of science was expressed generally due to new perspective of philosophy of science. (shrink)

I have three main objectives in this essay. First, in chapter 2, I shall put forward and justify what I call worldlessness, by which I mean the following: All truths (as well as falsehoods) are wholly independent of any circumstances, not only time and place but also possible worlds. It follows from this view that whatever is actually true must be taken as true with respect to every possible world, which means that all truths are (in a sense) necessary. However, (...) the account I shall propound is different from what is known in the trade as necessitarianism, i.e. the view that there is only one possible world, viz. the actual one, for the doctrine of the worldlessness of truth values, despite its commitment to the necessity of truths and falsehoods, is quite compatible with the idea of there being other possible worlds. Another important issue in chapter 2, explored in particular in section 2.12, is the claim that there is no real change in the world. Secondly, in chapter 3 I consider the eminent traditional argument for determinism, deriving from Aristotle, namely, logical determinism, i.e. determinism justified by an appeal to the logical principle of bivalence (that all proper statements, including those concerning the future, are either true or false). In this connection I try to show that, (i), the formulation of the conclusion of this argument as "Whatever will happen will happen of necessity" is implausible, at least from the modern point of view, (ii), the formulation as "Whatever will happen will happen inevitably" is more to the point, and (iii), on the basis of the worldless and timeless aspect advocated in chapter 2, this latter formulation is quite harmless, essentially amounting to the trivial statement, "Whatever will happen will happen". Thirdly, in chapter 4 I study theological determinism, or determinism that arises from God's supposed providential control over everything that happens. In this connection, I shall survey some historical accounts of the relation between human free will and determinism (not only theological but also causal determinism); the philosophers the views of whom I shall attend to include Chrysippus, St. Augustine, Boethius and Aquinas. I shall in particular consider G.W. Leibniz' theodicean aspirations, viz. his solution to the problem of evil and, especially, his compatibilist attempts to reconcile human free will with the strictly deterministic flow of actual events. I think it is important to try to explicate Leibniz' ingenious account of these matters, since it seems that it has not been fully appreciated in the literature, not even by contemporary Leibniz scholars (such as B. Mates, R.C. Sleigh, C. Wilson, R.M. Adams and D. Rutherford). In providing the Leibnizian compatibilist solution of the problem of determinism and freedom in chapter 4, I shall utilize the approach of chapter 2. (shrink)

Turri argues against what he calls an “orthodox” view of the relationship between propositional and doxastic justification, according to which (Basis) it is sufficient for S to be doxastically justified in believing p that p is propositionally justified for S in virtue of having reason(s) R and S believes p on the basis of R. According to Turri, (Basis) is false and hence the orthodox view is wrong. Turri offers “an alternative proposal,” the definitive thesis of which is that the (...) subject’s intellectual abilities explain why a given proposition, p, is justified for her, and argues that, contra the orthodoxy, this proposal leads to explaining propositional justification in terms of doxastic justification rather than vice versa. In this paper, I argue for the following claims: (i) There are good reasons to think that Turri misidentifies “the orthodox view” and his objection thereby misfires, (ii) Even if we assume that Turri’s identification of the orthodox view is correct, his counter-examples to that view are far from being decisive, and (iii) Turri’s own proposal is not “an alternative” to the orthodox view but can be accommodated by it. A general definition of consciousness is: ‘consciousness is a mental aspect of a system or a process, which is a conscious experience, a conscious function, or both depending on the context’, where the term context refers to metaphysical views, constraints, specific aims, and so on. One of the aspects of visual consciousness is the visual subjective experience (SE) or the first person experience that occurs/emerges in the visual neural-network of thalamocortical system (which includes dorsal and ventral visual pathways and frontal (...) cortex) during dynamic interactions among widely distributed neuronal groups. In this article, however, consciousness and SE are interchangeably used unless noted. Consciousness can be either access (reportable) or phenomenal consciousness. For access consciousness, the interactions are between feed forward stimulus dependent signals and fronto-parietal feedback attentional signals. The necessary ingredients for access (reportable) consciousness are (i) wakefulness, (ii) reentrant interactions among neural populations, (iii) fronto-parietal and thalamic-reticular-nucleus attentional signals that modulate consciousness, (iv) working memory that retains information for consciousness, (v) stimulus at or above threshold level, and (vi) neural-network proto-experiences (PEs) that are superposed SEs embedded in a neural-network. Attention and the ability to report are not necessary for phenomenal consciousness. The neural source for the arousal system is the ascending reticular activating system in the brain stem, which brings the thalamocortical neural networks to wakeful state as a baseline for consciousness to occur. Reentrant interactions among neural populations bind stimulus attributes (such as location and features) and entail consciousness. Attention could be the results of reentry and competitive interactions, and modulates the stimulus related feed forward signal and consciousness. The ‘sources’ of attention may be thalamic reticular nucleus for bottom-up or frontal cortex for top-down direction. The ‘target’ of visual attention is ‘V4/V8/VO’ for Red-Green (R-G) channel. The neural correlates of the psychophysical entity R-G channel appear to be ‘V4/V8/VO’-neural-network (retina → LGN ↔ V1 ↔ V2 ↔ ‘V4/V8/VO’, and areas for attention, memory, and wakefulness). The psychophysical Red-Green Channel, its neurophysiological correlates V4/V8/VO-neural-network, and related experience (such as redness) are integrated. The dual-aspect-dual-mode PE-SE framework (Vimal, J Integr Neurosci 7:49–73, 2008) was used to address the explanatory gap problem of materialism. Neural-network and related SEs are the results of the co-evolution and co-development of the material aspect (mass, charge, spin, force, quanta, and space-time) and the mental aspect of fundamental particles (strings or elementary particles (fermions and bosons)). Their mental aspects are considered as the carriers of superposed multiple possible experiences (SEs/PEs) in unexpressed form. These possibilities are actualized when neural-networks are formed via neural Darwinism, and a specific SE is selected by a matching process when the necessary ingredients of consciousness/SE are satisfied. A simple experimental design is suggested to address the necessary and sufficient attributes of consciousness. (shrink)

Resumo: Sabe-se que a pecuária é uma parcela do agronegócio que move a economia do país, e incluso está a produção leiteira, que tem, a cada ano seu desenvolvimento elevado, de forma em que é priorizado a eficiência no aumento de sua produção, com o objetivo de suprir a demanda, e a maior rentabilidade do produtor. Diante disso, medidas de manejo reprodutivo e alimentar são adotadas, sendo estas capazes de elevar a produtividade com o menor custo possível. O trabalho objetivou (...) pautar acerca do conhecimento sobre o manejo nutricional correto e escore corporal, que afetam diretamente a produtividade do animal, o conhecimento acerca do ciclo reprodutivo de vacas, expondo a detecção de estro, bem como metodologias eficazes aplicadas na reprodução, e práticas de bem estar, que, quando ausente, é apontado como um dos precursores da ineficiência reprodutiva. Abstract: It is known that livestock is a part of agribusiness that drives the country's economy, and is even milk production, which has, every year, its high development, so that it is prioritizing efficiency in increasing its production, with the objective of supplying the demand, and the greater producer profitability. Therefore, reproductive and food management measures are adopted, being able to increase productivity with the lowest possible cost. The work aimed guide about knowledge about correct nutritional management and body score, which affect directly the animal's productivity, knowledge about the reproductive cycle of cows, exposing estrus detection, as well as effective methodologies applied in reproduction, and practices of well-being, which, when absent, is pointed out as one of the precursors of inefficiency reproductive. At first glance, Aristotle’s Politics is a repository of dry, professorial lecture notes. Although the work contains the occasional literary reference or historical digression, analysis, argumentation, and socio-political taxonomies predominate. Beneath the surface of such prose, Pangle locates an Aristotle who seeks to involve the reader in dialogical exchange—much like as in a Platonic dialogue—by means of dialectical, rhetorical and literary devices. Pangle—a student of the political theorist Leo Strauss, a translator of Plato, Aristophanes and Sophocles, and the author of (...) books on modern political theorists such as Montesquieu, Locke, and the Federalist Papers—has written a study of the Politics informed not only by a close reading of the text, but also its relationship to modern republicanism, and the conflict between rationalism and religion. A previously published introduction presents what Pangle takes to be Aristotle’s rhetorical strategy in the Politics; it is followed by chapters organized around individual books in the Politics (a chapter each for Politics I, II, and III, and consolidated chapters for Politics IV-VI and VII-VIII—the last of which had been previously published in part). The text is followed by almost 50 pages of notes, notes in which Aquinas is cited as frequently (and sometimes more frequently) than contemporary Aristotle scholars like P. Simpson, R. Kraut, and E. Schütrumpf and Alfarabi is cited more frequently than F. Miller (although by far the most frequently cited authorities are the 19th century scholars F. Susemihl, R.D. Hicks, and above all, W. Newman). The book is clearly a mature work of scholarship, informed by extended reflection on Aristotle’s Politics and the subsequent western tradition of political theory and philological commentary which has responded to it. The growth in neoliberal or market-driven higher education has challenged traditional approaches to evaluating faculty members. The involvement of multiple stakeholders (i.e., accreditation bodies, quality assurance officers, administrators, teaching faculty, and students) has led to different and sometimes conflicting needs in faculty evaluation. While extant literature generally suggests that faculty evaluation in contemporary higher education is strongly associated with accountability purposes, little is known about how key agents at the institutional level use evaluation for learning and improvement. Thus, this study (...) attempts to identify the approaches to faculty evaluation that promote learning and improvement in higher education. This study is a qualitative case study of Vietnamese higher education student evaluation of teaching (SET) and voting evaluation practices. It adopts the problem-based methodology (Robinson, 1993; Robinson & Lai, 2006) to investigate the theories of action of some key stakeholders of these faculty evaluation practices in Vietnam. The theories of action comprise the stakeholders’ approaches to faculty evaluation, together with the constraints (that rule in or rule out specific approaches) and the consequences of the approaches. Participants included four quality assurance officers, 18 administrators, and 20 faculty members from seven public higher education institutions in Vietnam. The theories of action about faculty evaluation were constructed based on interviews and key evaluation documents. Overall, the participants took three main approaches to faculty evaluation: (i) complying with the expected evaluation procedures and roles, (ii) taking a harmony-oriented and unilateral approach to problem solving, and (iii) disengaging from evaluation for learning and improvement. The participants generally fulfilled the evaluation policy requirements, but their approaches had a limited impact on learning and improvement at the institutional level. The constraint analysis suggests that the participants’ approaches were not completely passive but were mainly oriented to managerial accountability demands (Røiseland et al., 2015). The participants’ collectivist Confucian harmony-oriented norms hindered their approaches to problem solving and using evaluation for learning and improvement. However, there were a few participants who acted on their own values rather than being confined by political and cultural constraints. In spite of its scarcity, these participants’ self-reliant approach suggests a potential influence of Buddhist principles of self-transformation, contextuality and reflexivity on improving practices (Chu & Vu, 2021; Thich Nhat Hanh, 1987). The study has two key implications. First, it suggests the improvement of faculty evaluation policymaking and implementation by revising several existing constraints and by adding some cultural and individual constraints to the current theories of action. The faculty evaluation problems could be solved by improving the quality of evaluation processes and data, reconceptualising SET and voting evaluation, and treating faculty members’ underperformance as a collective problem. Second, the study suggests a framework to predict the likely success of future intervention on faculty evaluation. For instance, faculty evaluation for learning and improvement will be more feasible if policymakers and implementers prioritise transformational purposes and make joint efforts to foster dialogues and collaboration among individuals and groups. My study also highlights the need to understand faculty evaluation, and possibly other higher education practices in Vietnam, in religious contexts and from individual participants’ spiritual values or philosophical backgrounds. The study implications are applicable to Vietnamese higher education and potentially to other educational settings with similar characteristics. (shrink)

Não se trata apenas de (...) relatar os preceitos do método ao seu modelo matemático, e sim, também, para entender porque o método em si necessita de uma fundamentação alicerçada na metafísica. Mas isso é a maneira pelo qual o projeto revolucionário de Descartes substituiu a autoridade da tradição pela autoridade da razão. -/- I – UM PROJETO REVOLUCIONÁRIO -/- No se pode deixar atingir-se, lendo o Discurso do Método, pelo caráter revolucionário que Descartes queria conferir ao seu projeto. É notável, e vale salientar o cuidado que Descartes toma na primeira parte, sublinhando o que seu projeto tem de singular: “Assim, meu propósito não é ensinar aqui o método que cada um deve seguir para bem conduzir sua razão, mas somente mostrar de que modo procurei conduzir a minha” (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 5). Ainda mais notável é o fato escolhido por Descartes e destacado na segunda parte, a da casa que deve ser derrubada para reconstruí-la: -/- É verdade que não vemos demolirem-se todas as casas de uma cidade só com o propósito de refazê-las de outra forma e de tornar as ruas mais belas, mas não é incomum vermos muitos mandarem derrubar as suas para reconstruí-las, e até, por vezes, a isso são obrigados quando elas correm o risco de cair por si mesmas e os alicerces não estão muito firmes (DESCARTES, 1996. pp. 17-18). -/- Descartes enfatiza explicitamente a oposição entre tal abordagem e a estratégia reformista de “redigitar” a sua casa, organizando-a, reparando-a aqui e ali. Certamente ele está combatendo a ideia revolucionária na política, o design ambicioso daqueles que querem perturbar o Estado, porque nesta área a destruição tornaria a reconstrução futura impossível. Mas o que é insano sobre “uma cidade inteira” torna-se possível quando se trata de cada um de sua própria casa. -/- O que é possível torna-se necessário, quando a casa ameaça entrar em colapso, uma vez que seus alicerces são vulneráveis. Casa vacilante, que seria inútil só querer reparar, é assim que Descartes considera o todo “opiniões” que lhe foram transmitidas em sua educação. Essas opiniões são, acima de tudo, incertas: pode haver alguma verdade nelas, mas provavelmente também há o lado falso, e essa mistura indissociável faz com que todas sejam falsas, a verdade só tem valor para nós se pudermos distinguir com certeza do erro. -/- O julgamento negativo de Descartes de tudo o que ele tem, como escreve, “recebido em dívida”, pressupõe, é claro, uma crítica do conteúdo dessas opiniões e, acima de tudo, uma crítica aos princípios sobre os quais eles descansam. Mas isso não é o suficiente para fazer as pessoas entenderem a escolha inicial de uma abordagem revolucionária, de preferência ao empreendimento reformista, que seria criticar, uma após a outra, as opiniões recebidas, e consolidar, pouco a pouco, a sua “Casa”. Mais do que o conteúdo peculiar das opiniões recebidas, é o próprio fato que elas são recebidas, em uma aquisição desordenada e perigosa, o que importa. E se temos que revolucionar o conhecimento, se temos que destruir essas opiniões antes de substituí-las por outras é, antes de mais nada, uma questão de substituir conquista controlada da desordem e chance de sua aquisição, em vez de se limitar a correções que só aumentariam essa confusão. -/- Nisso, a decisão primeira de Descartes ultrapassa as circunstâncias históricas do seu aparecimento, e conserva em todos os tempos o valor de um modelo para o pensamento: a filosofia nasce de uma ruptura, não com esta ou aquela tradição, mas com a tradição como tal. -/- II – DESCARTES E A TRADIÇÃO -/- A tradição é um pensamento sem sujeito: pensamento que ninguém pensa, não pensa. Descartes se opõe ao requisito essencial, para toda ciência, de ser a matéria de um sujeito: não há ciência até que toda verdade seja reconhecida em seu poder de sugerir notícias, de acordo com uma sequência que deve ser reconhecida, para que eu (Descartes) possa reivindicar, de forma legítima, a ciência universal. Quando Descartes expressa essa afirmação, em seu próprio texto, em seus textos de juventude, o que nos parece ser a marca de uma excessiva arrogância, expressa, antes, uma condição inscrita na própria natureza do conhecimento. -/- O projeto revolucionário está assim ligado à uma ideia que Descartes enuncia no início da segunda parte do Discurso do Método: “[...] não há tanta perfeição nas obras compostas de várias peças, e feitas pelas mãos de vários mestres, como naquelas em que apenas um trabalhou” (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 15). Certamente, por “perfeição, Descartes entende menos a magnitude e a riqueza essa ordem e consistência. Ele reconhece que algumas áreas são, irremediavelmente, entregues à imperfeição. Este é o caso do Estado e das instituições políticas em geral: resultados não intencionais de uma multidão de ações históricas entrelaçadas, nossas instituições nunca correspondem a um projeto consciente, e não seria razoável empreender sua reforma de acordo com tal projeto. Descartes não ignora as virtudes da cooperação para a execução de atividades materiais complexas. Porque as aptidões corporais dos homens são distintas e capazes de se especializar, os indivíduos podem interferir uns com os outros e se harmonizar visando a colaboração do todo. -/- Não obstante, as obras de pensamento, as ciências em particular, não conseguem encontrar a perfeição de que são susceptíveis por serem construídas por sucessivas sedimentações históricas, de acordo com a descoberta uma das outras, fazendo com que todas essas descobertas, a ciência, não seria obra de ninguém. Se o exercício de uma atividade manual nos impede de praticar outra (porque as mesmas mãos dificilmente podem se exercitar ao mesmo tempo para cultivar os campos e tocar a cítara), o conhecimento de uma verdade nos ajuda a encontrar outras verdades. Finja que esse conhecimento é apenas uma contribuição fragmentada para uma síntese coletiva da qual o princípio nos escapa, é desconsiderar sua fecundidade, isto é, o que faz dele um verdadeiro conhecimento. -/- O que Descartes está lutando, essa necessidade de que todos participem de uma instituição já iniciada e que ninguém pode dominar, essa herança de aceitar, enriquecer e transmitir é o que chamamos de tradição: então ele escreve o Discurso do Método não em latim, linguagem de transmissão histórica do conhecimento, mas em francês, linguagem “vulgar”. Certamente, Descartes luta contra a tradição científica e filosófica em vigor em seu tempo, a herança já enfraquecida do pensamento de Aristóteles, transmitida durante a Idade Média pelas Universidades (o que denominamos de “escolasticismo”), mas ele luta acima de tudo em sua pretensão de manter seu valor de ser, precisamente, uma tradição. Esta não é uma luta em nome da “novidade” ou da “modernidade”, que são sempre definidas em relação a uma tradição, mas uma luta em nome da verdade, o que é mais antiga do que qualquer tradição. -/- III – A LIGAÇÃO ENTRE AUTORIDADE E A VERDADE -/- Descartes assim fórmula seu projeto, na segunda parte do Discurso do Método: [...] mas, quanto às opiniões que até então eu aceitara, o melhor que podia fazer era suprimi-las de uma vez por todas, a fim de substituí-las depois, ou por outras melhores, ou então pelas mesmas, quando eu as tivesse ajustado ao nível da razão (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 18). -/- Que uma opinião poderia ter sido recebido por ele em sua vida, sem ter sido ajustada ao nível da razão, significa que foi considerada a sua verdade, sem que ele tenha que se pronunciar sobre o julgamento do que declarava verdadeiro. Então foi um preconceito, que ele achava que era verdade apenas para tê-lo recebido, isto é, por causa de sua fonte. Que a afirmação de uma opinião como verdadeira é validada por sua fonte, e isso corresponde ao que denominamos como “argumento de autoridade”: é verdade porque Platão, ou Aristóteles, disseram isso. Agora é possível, é claro, descobrir verdades lendo Platão ou Aristóteles, desde que essas descobertas sejam não apenas para conferir Platão, Aristóteles, ou qualquer outro autor (“autoritário”), mas para encontrar a si mesmo com as verdades em questão. Parece, portanto, que a revolução cartesiana visa romper o elo entre as concepções de verdade e autoridade. -/- -/- Todavia, olhando mais de perto, veremos que esse não é o caso. Quebrar o elo entre autoridade e verdade é ser crítico, enquanto Descartes encara sim o “espírito da dúvida”. Ser crítico é estar interessado apenas no conteúdo das ideias e ser perfeitamente indiferente à sua fonte. Descartes, como supracitado, não se compromete a criticar suas antigas opiniões uma após a outra, o que seria o passo mais oposto ao princípio de autoridade, quanto mais indiferente à questão da fonte. O que Descartes propõe é bem diferente: ele propõe substituir, com todas as autoridades que estão fora dele (em seu exterior), pela autoridade que está nele (em seu interior), e que muitas vezes é até confundida, veremos isso. Agora é sobre “ajustar as opiniões ao nível da razão”: a razão, isto é, a razão de Descartes, tal qual o fala e presente em cada um, deve ser autoritária em matéria de verdade, deve ser o tribunal diante do qual tudo aparece. É uma interiorização do argumento de autoridade, não é uma rejeição deste argumento. -/- A interiorização da autoridade explica o lugar central da certeza na filosofia de Descartes. O que importa na verdade é a certeza de possuí-la, e essa certeza é uma ato de confiança em relação às fonte autorizada da verdade: tudo que é “ajustado ao nível da razão” será certo, se a razão for o que é autoritário. -/- Duas questões orientadoras sucessivas inspirarão a investigação da certeza: -/- 1 – A primeira consistirá em estabelecer o que ele realmente tem certeza, delimitando o domínio da certeza autêntica daquilo que é garantido pela autoridade da razão. 2 – A segunda consistirá em se perguntar se ele está certo em ter certeza sobre algo, porque a autoridade internalizada deve se questionar. -/- A primeira questão, considerada isoladamente, leva à ideia cartesiana de método. O conjunto das duas questões, a passagem da primeira para a segunda, depois da segunda para a primeira, constitui a metafísica de Descartes. -/- IV – O QUE É A RAZÃO ? -/- O que significa ter razão em um tribunal? As primeiras linhas do Discurso do Método definem a razão como sendo um senso comum, isto é, a faculdade de distinguir a verdade da mentira, o que nos diferencia dos animais. Em outras palavras, a razão é o poder, não para racionar, mas degenerar, pensando na medida em que se pronuncia sobre qualquer objeto que se apresente. Separado em um sentido de outras faculdades do pensamento, este poder está envolvido em qualquer operação de pensamento: a memória supõe um julgamento sobre o passado, o desejo um julgamento sobre o que procurar, o amor um julgamento sobre o que é digno de ser amado... Nesse sentido, a razão se confunde com o próprio pensamento. É até confuso, para todos, consigo mesmo, pois ninguém pode julgar sua razão sem voltar a agir: mesmo aqueles que estão acostumados a reclamar do que foi dado a eles nunca reivindicam, nota Descartes, uma razão de melhor qualidade: pois isso equivaleria a desqualificar essa afirmação conforme a expressam. -/- Coextensiva com o pensamento, a razão está em nós como uma luz natural. Como a luz do Sol que ilumina a variedade das coisas no mundo sem perder sua identidade, permanecendo a mesma luz, o pensamento julgador mantém sua unidade sem nunca se quebrar ou se perder, seja qual for os objetos aos quais se aplica: seja o que for que eu julgue, é sempre eu quem julgo. A ciência deve ser difundida mediante essa ideia, isto é, como um certo modo de julgar, ou pensar, e não dá diversidade de seus objetos. -/- -/- Rejeitar as opiniões recebidas, e julgadas boas porque foram recebidas, é recuperar o poder soberano de julgar aquilo que até então passou despercebido. Colocar a razão no tribunal não é uma novidade, mas uma revolução no sentido estrito, isto é, um retorno. A razão é o senso comum, o poder, não apenas para julgar, mas julgar bem, para distinguir o verdadeiro do falso. Julgar mal, tomar o falso pela verdade, não deve ser dotado de um “poder de julgar mal”, é errado usar nosso poder para julgar bem. A diferença entre o bem e o mal não está no poder, mas no uso desse poder, na maneira de usá-lo, de proceder quando se julga, em uma palavra, o método. É necessário romper com uma aquisição sem método de conhecimento, de acordo com as influências sofridas, e conferir a si mesmo um método firme, que será como o procedimento do tribunal da razão. E como nossa capacidade de comer é saudável por si só, esse método não deve ser tomado como uma técnica destinada para melhorá-lo, para torná-lo mais eficaz, e sim como uma higiene projetada para preservá-lo. -/- Mas onde encontrar as regras desse método? Em um domínio, precisamente, onde nosso poder de regulação ou gerenciamento tem sido relativamente preservado, fazendo com que se possa explorar esse domínio, descobri-lo e extrair dele um procedimento universal. Porque o pensamento sendo esta luz que ilumina de igual forma as variedades de tudo que se apresenta a ela, o que torna-se verdadeiro nesse domínio deve ser de todos os outros. Essa área de referência é o domínio da matemática. -/- V – O MODELO MATEMÁTICO -/- Descartes acredita que é no domínio da matemática e, precisamente da geometria, que os antigos fizeram descobertas difíceis e duradouras. A geometria dos antigos e a dos modernos e, especialmente a de François Viète (1540-1603), acrescentou a análise na matemática, o que denominamos de “álgebra”. A descoberta em 1631 da geometria analítica, que relaciona curvas geométricas com equações algébricas, é também o principal título de fama de Descartes como matemático. No entanto, não devemos superestimar a importância que esta descoberta teve para o próprio Descartes. Seu principal interesse era, em sua opinião, metodológico: permitia libertar a mente para simplificar as técnicas de cálculo. -/- Porque na matemática Descartes é compartilhado entre admiração pelo que eles permitem, e desprezo pelo que fazem com ele. A ideia de facilidade é o motivo comum dessa admiração e desprezo. Matemática é fácil, e sua virtude nos mostrar como o conhecimento é fácil, é fácil para o homem saber tudo o que ele pode saber, desde que o mesmo tenha tempo. Todavia, essa facilidade faz com que a atividade habitual dos matemáticos seja um pouco ridícula, a resolução de “problemas matemáticos”, que Descartes considerava como um mero divertimento, é dificilmente digna de consideração. É novamente em nome desse caso que Descartes mais uma vez repreende os antigos matemáticos por terem dado seus resultados mas obstruindo ou ocultando seu método, a fim de impressionar os crédulos, dificultando a aparência do que não é. O método está em contraste com o essencial do que pode ser aprendido com a matemática. -/- -/- Para identificar corretamente este método, é necessário abstrair os próprios objetos matemáticos (números, figuras etc.), que nos faz acreditar que a matemática é uma ciência especial ao lado das outras ciências, o que nos leva a uma divisão em ramos separados da mesma (aritmética, geometria, álgebra etc.). Então aparece uma matemática universal, consistindo no estudo de “vários relatórios ou proporções” que podem ser encontrados entre quaisquer objetos, para que possamos constituí-los em séries contínuas e deduzi-los uns dos outros, e chegar, daqueles que são conhecidos, àqueles que ainda não estão distantes, tão distantes como estão, tão ocultos como parecem ser. -/- Não há nada difícil em tal conhecimento, há apenas o simples e o complexo, e o tempo necessário para alcançar o complexo mediante o simples. Não há nada difícil porque não há nada oculto: se “conhecer” era a perigosa empreitada de se aventurar na dimensão secreta das coisas, seria necessário um gênio e o uso de poderes ocultos. Mas “conhecer” é um exercício do senso comum que direciona sua luz para tudo que pode esclarecer: é, portanto, suficiente para um método. -/- Nós todos sabemos que as primeiras verdades matemáticas são simples. Mas por que elas são? Porque elas nos contam tudo sem reservas, sem nada opaco, sobre tudo que estão falando e tratando: seu objeto é completamente iluminado, não há a necessidade de voltar à ele para aprofundá-lo indefinidamente, devemos passar para outro. Estas são representações estritamente adequadas ao que elas alegam, para representar o que Descartes denominou de ideais claras e distintas: claro, porque percebemos todos os elementos distintos, porque não podemos confundi-los com os outros. -/- Se a primeira verdade é considerada simples, a segunda, por sua vez, não parece ser assim. Seria, sem dúvida, considerada difícil, reservando uma parte do desconhecido se o enfrentássemos de frente. Mas é apenas complexo, isto é, só podemos entendê-lo depois de ter compreendido o primeiro, e depois entender que não há mais nada para entender no primeiro, e sim passar adiante: basta respeitar essa ordem, que é a ordem do nosso entendimento, para que seja também considerado uma ideia claro e distinta. -/- Até onde podemos prosseguir? Até o fim, de acordo com Descartes, até a conclusão do que podemos saber, uma vez que nossa mente, que agora é ordenada por nosso conhecimento, é limitada: limite claro, limite esse que não é misteriosamente abrigado no mundo ou na espessura da realidade. Abaixo desse limite, nosso conhecimento pode ser perfeito se for metódico. Abaixo do limite, nada oculto, nada profundo, tudo toma o seu lugar nas “longas cadeias de razões”; além do limite, nada escondido, apenas o que é não é nossa responsabilidade. -/- Se não há nada escondido, a realidade que conhecemos não vai além do que sabemos sobre ela. Logo, o método não é apenas uma maneira humana de pedir objetos a nossa conveniência: atribuindo-lhes o seu lugar em nossa ordem, tornando-os claros para nós, envolve-os em seu verdadeiro ser. A revolução cartesiana consiste, então, no fato de que as condições de nosso conhecimento definem a verdade do ser conhecido. -/- Não obstante, sempre perpetua-se uma “dificuldade”, que nada mais é do que o tempo. Se não há a necessidade de o gênio saber perfeitamente, leva tempo para ir do simples ao complexo. O homem só pode saber se tem tempo, muito tempo antes dele: essa preocupação para com a necessidade de tempo, retorna com uma obsessão sob a caneta e a perspectiva de Descartes. Essa necessidade, então, de ter tempo diferencia radicalmente, como veremos, o problema do conhecimento e da ação, da conduta a ser mantida na vida, da moralidade, uma vez que “as ações da vida muitas vezes não sofrem demora...”. -/- VI – REGRAS DO MÉTODO: OS QUATRO PRECEITOS -/- Podemos agora compreender os quatro preceitos aos quais, segundo Descartes, o método é reduzido (Discurso, segunda parte). -/- VI.I - Regra de evidência -/- O primeiro era de nunca aceitar coisa alguma como verdadeira sem que a conhecesse evidentemente como tal; ou seja, evitar cuidadosamente a precipitação e a prevenção, e não incluir em meus juízos nada além daquilo que se apresentasse tão clara e distintamente a meu espírito, que eu não tivesse nenhuma ocasião de pô-lo em dúvida (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 23). -/- Mesmo que sua declaração o duplique, é de fato um mesmo preceito acerca do que deve ser concebido como verdadeiro. Receber com método é esperar até que a coisa se apresente para ele: essa paciência, esse “cuidado”, remove os preconceitos característicos das ideias recebidas antes da hora, a precipitação e a prevenção que fazem parecer obscuro o que é o tempo. Se, nessa apresentação para ele, ele tomou um cuidado de aderir (nada mais) ao que é claro e distinto, é sem reserva que uma “coisa” pode ser recebida, sem poder surgir o risco, a “oportunidade”, de ter que voltar mais tarde: ele teria visto a sua verdade, e está evidência foi o suficiente para que ele pudesse duvidar disso. -/- VI.II - Regra de análise -/- “O segundo, dividir cada uma das dificuldades que examinasse em tantas parcelas quantas fosse possível e necessário para melhor resolvê-las” (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 23). Ora, o que é apresentado como difícil de examinar, na verdade não o é, é apenas complexo, composto de múltiplas parcelas. Quantas parcelas? É a resolução da dificuldade que deve decidir essa questão: quando um matemático consegue estabelecer um teorema “difícil”, ligando-o às proposições mais simples por uma cadeia contínua de deduções, ele sabe que não há mais nada a saber em seu objeto, que contém exatamente tantas divisões quantas forem necessárias para formar está série. Logo, não precisamos nos preocupar com mais nada. -/- VI.III - Regra de ordem -/- O terceiro, conduzir por ordem meus pensamentos, começando pelos objetos mais simples e mais fáceis de conhecer , para subir pouco a pouco, como por degraus, até o conhecimento dos mais compostos; e supondo certa ordem mesmo entre aqueles que não se precedem naturalmente uns aos outros (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 23). -/- Essa é a ordem, de acordo com os pensamentos de Descartes, o que pode ser visto no fato de que, entre os objetos mais simples e os mais complexos, a distinção está na ordem de facilidade, isto é, os primeiros são os mais fáceis de saber, enquanto o segundo, por sua vez, só pode ser conhecido quando dominamos a totalidade do primeiro. O importante é passar de um para o outro como por graus, numa série contínua, sem estar diante de um hiato como o conhecimento prévio não seria suficiente para deixar claro o novo conhecimento. E desde que está ordem de razões, fixando cada objeto em seu devido lugar, nos entrega em sua totalidade, é também a ordem objetiva, a ordem dos próprios objetos, tanto que não devemos hesitar em supor isso entre eles, mesmo quando o modo como se apresentam não revela ordem. -/- VI.IV - Regra de enumeração -/- “E, o último, fazer em tudo enumerações tão completas, e revisões tão gerais, que eu tivesse certeza de nada omitir” (DESCARTES, 1996. p. 23). Omitir alguma coisa séria destruir o próprio princípio da ordem das razões, uma vez que qualquer objeto só pode ser visto clara e distintamente se todos que o precederam também tiverem sido vistos em seu lugar. Se a dedução atingir este objeto, significa que nada foi omitido até então. Porém, quando a dedução torna-se muito longa, torna-se, também, mais difícil de mantê-la inteira, como deveria, sob o olhar da mente; somos então tentados a confiar apenas em sua memória. O preceito de enumeração não deve ser entendido como uma preocupação retrospectiva (certifique-se de que nada o tenha esquecido), mas no sentido atual, como os meios de manter em mente todas as evidências do passado necessárias para a evidência presente. Dos quatro preceitos do método, é o único a ter um caráter de técnica e não de simples higiene: é aqui que se confronta a única dificuldade real do conhecimento, o fato de que leva tempo, e sua consequência, recorrer à memória, à faculdade pela qual as velhas ideias descartenses foram “concebidas em sua dívida”. -/- -/- VII – O MÉTODO EXIGE UM FUNDAMENTO METAFÍSICO -/- O método permite responder à uma questão: do que tenho certeza? É certo que homens que seguem ideias aceitas também conhecem esse estado psicológico chamado “certeza”. Todavia, entre esse estado psicológico e a verdadeira certeza do conhecimento metódico, há uma diferença de que o primeiro está imune a “oportunidades” de duvidar, já que ele não tem autoconfiança. Toda oportunidade de dúvida que se apresenta transformaria essa “certeza” em incerteza: por isso que é sensato duvidar em princípio das opiniões recebidas, sem esperar, por assim dizer, oportunidades de duvidar, e decretar antecipadamente seu conteúdo incerto, não necessariamente substituí-lo por outro conteúdo, mas aceitar apenas o que lhe fora assegurado. -/- Poderia ser o mesmo com a certeza do conhecimento metódico? Pode ser apresentado a ele como uma oportunidade para duvidar, e seria sábio também duvidá-lo antecipadamente, submetendo-o a uma dúvida de princípio? Seria então uma dúvida muito diferente da anterior. Descartes exclamou que: “Se alguma vez duvidei um dia do que me aperfeiçoei seguramente, tal dúvida deveria permanecer fora da certeza: não a destruiria, nem mesmo a enfraqueceria, a colocaria em suspenso no vazio; ele não sugeriria para mim que eu talvez esteja menos certo do que pensava, mas sim que posso estar errado em ter tanta certeza. Eu vou manter minha certeza enquanto duvidoso, porque não haveria nenhuma esperança para eu encontrar melhor do que ela: minha única esperança seria descobrir que ela é verdadeiramente fundamentada, que eu confio com razão, e não porque eu não posso contrário.” -/- Mas por que uma oportunidade para duvidar dessa maneira? A própria razão, na medida em que é incontestavelmente autoritária, deve levantar essa dúvida por sua própria autoridade. É porque é autoritária que tem o direito de se perguntar sobre o que o autoriza, sobre o que o investe com tal autoridade. Afinal, a certeza de sua autoridade é uma certeza, que não pode ser classificada entre as certezas que ela nos ensina, uma vez que reconhecemos essa autoridade. -/- Por isso, é importante encontrar, para essa certeza, um fundamento para abrigá-lo, de uma vez por todas, desta suspeita sobre si mesmo. A busca por esse fundamento deve ser metódica, mas deve ao mesmo tempo abalar nossa confiança no método, a fim de encontrar o que o justifica. Essa busca paradoxal é o que Descartes denomina de "metafísica". Desdobra-se principalmente nas seis Meditações da Primeira Filosofia de 1641, geralmente chamadas de Meditações Metafísicas. Seu exame pode ser dividido em duas partes: -/- • o primeiro diz respeito à dúvida e ao seu trabalho; • o segundo diz respeito à fundação de certas ciências, ou seja, a existência de um Deus verdadeiro. -/- REFERENCIAL TEÓRICO -/- DESCARTES, R. FROM THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS By Antonino Drago, formerly at Naples University “Federico II”, Italy – drago@unina,.it (Size : 391.800 bytes 75,400 words) The book summarizes a half a century author’s work on the foundations of physics. For the forst time is established a level of discourse on theoretical physics which at the same time is philosophical in nature (kinds of infinity, kinds of organization) and formal (kinds of mathematics, kinds of logic). (...) This double side of the two dichotomies assures a deep comprehension of theoretical physics by avoiding both a purely philosophical analysis and a purely formal analysis, each manifestly insufficient for representing all the aspects of theoretical physics. Among the many formulations of a physical theory, e.g. Mechanics, also Mach(1) recognized technical differences only, Instead my suggestion is to consider their differences as revealing the characteristic features of their foundations. No more radical differences may exist than those concerning both their kinds of Mathematics and their kinds of Logic. As a fact, after the 20th Century within each of these sciences there exist two antagonist foundations, within Mathematics either the classical one or the constructive one(2); within Mathematical Logic either the classical logic or the intuitionist one(3). Let us take Mechanics as an instance. Being the choices of the Newton’s formulation respectively the actual infinity of the differential equations relying on the infinitesimals and the classical logic, a formulation based on the alternative choices is Lazare Carnot’s,(4) whose mathematics is no more than algebraic-trigonometric and the logic is the intuitionist one, because this formulation makes use of doubly negated propositions, whose corresponding affirmative propositions are idealistic or false; i.e. in these cases the law of double negation fails, as in intuitionist logic occurs. By considering these two dichotomies as the foundations of the physical theories, each couple of choices upon them fashions one out four models of scientific theory, which are baptized through the authors of their most representative theories: Newtonian, Carnotian, Lagrangian, Descartesian. In correspondence four versions of the principle of inertia are recognized, as suggested by respectively: Descartes. Lazare Carnot, Enriques and Cavalieri.(5) All that suggests that the four models of scientific theory may be graphically represented as a compass orientating our minds amid the so numerous physical theories. By taking these dichotomies as interpretative categories, a new interpretative history of Physics including both classical and modern physics results according to a quadrilinear development. The birth of modern physics is characterized by the two theories - Einstein’s paper on special relativity and Einstein’s first paper on quanta - whose choices are the alternative ones to those of the previously dominant physical theory, Newtonian mechanics: in the latter paper Einstein i) declares the dichotomy on the kinds of mathematics (“Introduction”) and then he chooses the discrete mathematics; ii) by using doubly negated propositions he organizes his theory in an alternative way to the deductive-axiomatic one.(6) Moreover, a new history of Philosophy of knowledge results. Kant’s first two a priori transcendental categories represent the physical interpretation of the two choices out of the four pairs of choices on the two dichotomies, i.e. the choices of the dominant theory of mechanics, Newton’s. Hegel’s dialectic was a misleading attempt of anticipating the subsequent intuitionist logic. The book starts by a comparison of different formulations of thermodynamics in order to recognize the first dichotomy on the kind of organization. In chapter 2 the dichotomy on the kind of infinity is recognized through a comparison of Newrton’s mechanics and Lazare Carnot’s. A quickly history of the other classical physical theories is illustrated in chapter 3; it results a foundational conflict between the last two theories, and hence a conflict between their opposite couples of choices. The two main theories of modern physics, special realtivity and quantum mechanics confirm the foundational role played by the two dichotomies which gives reason for the radical change in the history of theoretical physics. Indeed, the opposition of the two main pairs of choices gives reason of the crisis in theoretical physics in the early 1900s. As a global result, the book represents the first interpretation of the entire history of Physics, both classical and modern; This fact proves that the four models of scientific theories can works as a compass (that of the front cover) suggesting a direction among the many physical theories. This new history of physics leads to re-visit both Koyré’s and Kuhn’s historiographies. Their interpretative categories are interpreted and explained through the two dichotomies so that it is possible to suggest à la Koyré categories based on the alternative choices theories to Newton’s as the suitable categories for interpreting the alternative theories to Newton’s mechanics. All that suggests a new interpretation of the crucial step in the history of Western philosophy of knowledge, i.e. the passage from Leibniz to Kant: Leibniz’s suggestion of the two labyrinths of human minds may be seen as a close anticipation of the two above dichotomies. Kant applied them in order to construct the well-known four cosmological proofs, which however he misinterpreted as leading to contradictions, instead to tow different methods of investigation corresponding to the two different kinds of logic.(7) Bibliography 1. Temporal non-dynamists hold that there is no temporal passage, but concede that many of us judge that it seems as though time passes. Phenomenal Illusionists suppose that things do seem this way, even though things are not this way. They attempt to explain how it is that we are subject to a pervasive phenomenal illusion. More recently, Cognitive Error Theorists have argued that our experiences do not seem that way; rather, we are subject to an error that leads us mistakenly (...) to believe that our experiences seem that way. Cognitive Error Theory is a relatively new view and little has been said to explain why we make such an error, or where, in the cognitive architecture, such an error might creep in. In this paper we remedy this by offering a number of hypotheses about the source of error. In so doing we aim to show that Cognitive Error Theory is a plausible competitor to Phenomenal Illusion Theory. (shrink)

In recent years, a disagreement has erupted between two camps of philosophers about the rationality of bias toward the near and bias toward the future. According to the traditional hybrid view, near bias is rationally impermissible, while future bias is either rationally permissible or obligatory. Time neutralists, meanwhile, argue that the hybrid view is untenable. They claim that those who reject near bias should reject both biases and embrace time neutrality. To date, experimental work has focused on future-directed near bias. (...) The primary aim of this paper is to shed light on the debate by investigating past-directed near bias. If people treat the past and future differently with respect to near bias, by being future-directed but not past-directed near biased, then this supports a particular version of the hybrid view: temporal metaphysic hybridism. If people treat the past and future the same with respect to near bias, then this supports a simple version of time neutralism, which explains both future bias and near bias in terms of the functioning of a single mechanism: the anticipatory/retrospectory mechanism. Our results undermine the claim that people are future-directed, but not past-directed, near biased, and hence do not support temporal metaphysic hybridism. They also fail to support simple time-neutralism; instead, they suggest that there are multiple mechanisms that differently shape future- and past-directed preferences. (shrink)

Gruber and Smith (2019) have conducted some interesting virtual reality (VR) experiments, but we think that these experiments fail to illuminate why people think that the present is special. Their experiments attempted to test a suggestion by Hartle (2005) that with VR one might construct scenarios in which people experience the same present twice. If that’s possible, then it could give us a reason to think that when we experience the present as being special, that’s not because it’s objectively so. (...) Instead, our experience of the present being special is a feature of having a psychology like ours. While we are sympathetic to the thought that there is no objective present, we do not think that these experiments give us a reason to think this. That said, VR experiments, such as Gruber and Smith’s, hold much promise for being able to illuminate various aspects of our temporal psychology.According to Hartle’s (2005) IGUS model (which is meant to resemble entities like us) sensory information is routed to two kinds of processes: conscious processes C, which cause behavior, and unconscious processes, U, which construct a schematic representation of the environment. Hartle proposed that we experience the present as being special because of the sensory information at a time entering into C. For Gruber et al. (2020), the succession of sensory information entering into C underpins our experience of time passing. Our experience of time passing is illusory because it fails to be verid... (shrink)

At 435c-d and 504b ff., Socrates indicates that there is a "longer and fuller way" that one must take in order to get "the best possible view" of the soul and its virtues. But Plato does not have him take this "longer way." Instead Socrates restricts himself to an indirect indication of its goals by his images of sun, line, and cave and to a programmatic outline of its first phase, the five mathematical studies. Doesn't this pointed restraint function as (...) a provocation, moving us to want to begin the "longer way" and to make use of its conceptual resources to rethink Socrates' images? I begin by finding a double movement in the complex trajectory of the five studies: they both guide the soul in the "turn away from what is coming to be ... [to] what is" (518c) and, at the same time, lead the soul back, albeit in the medium of pure intelligibility, to the sensible world; for the pure figures and ratios that they disclose constitute the core structures of sensible things. I then draw on what Socrates says about geometry and harmonics to address three fundamental questions that he leaves open: the nature of the Good in its responsibility for truth and for the being of the forms; the relations of forms, mathematicals, and sensibles as these are disclosed by dialectic; and the bearing of the philosopher's discovery of the Good on his disposition towards his community and the task of ruling. I close by marking six sets of further questions that these reflections bequeath for dialogues to come. (shrink)

Hoerl & McCormack posit two systems – the temporal updating system and the temporal reasoning system – and suggest that they explain an inherent contradiction in people's naïve theory of time. We suggest there is no contradiction. Something does, however, require explanation: the tension between certain sophisticated beliefs about time, and certain phenomenological states or beliefs about those phenomenological states. The temporal updating mechanism posited by H&M may contribute to this tension.
