  6. Geographical Categories: An Ontological Retrospective.Barry Smith & David M. Mark - 2001 - International Journal of Geographical Information Science 15 (7):507–512.
Since it is only five years since the publication of our paper, "Geographical categories: An ontological investigation" (Smith and Mark 2001), it seems somewhat strange to (...) be making retrospective comments on the piece. Nevertheless, the field is moving quickly, and much has happened since the article appeared. A large number of papers have already cited the work, which suggests that there is a seam here that people find worthy of being mined. In this short essay, we first review the paper and attempt to assess its significance from the perspective of our current work. We then put the paper in the context of our individual and joint works, which led up to it, and summarize our research trajectories since the paper appeared, pointing out what some of this reveals about spatial ontology in general. We conclude with some remarks on the future of ontological research in geographical information science. (shrink)

  8. Layers: A New Approach to Locating Objects in Space.Maureen Donnelly & Barry Smith - 2003 - In W. Kuhn M. F. Worboys & S. Timpf (eds.), Spatial Information Theory: Foundations of Geographic Information Science. Springer. pp. 50-65.
Standard theories in mereotopology focus on relations of parthood and connection among spatial or spatio-temporal regions. Objects or processes which might be located in such regions (...)are not normally directly treated in such theories. At best, they are simulated via appeal to distributions of attributes across the regions occupied or by functions from times to regions. The present paper offers a richer framework, in which it is possible to represent directly the relations between entities of various types at different levels, including both objects and the regions they occupy. What results is a layered mereotopology, a theory which can handle multiple layers (analogous to the layers of a lasagna) of spatially or spatiotemporally coincident but mereologically non-overlapping entities. 10. Identity and Aboutness.Benjamin Brast-McKie - 2021 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 1:1-33.
This paper develops a theory of propositional identity which distinguishes necessarily equivalent propositions that differ in subject-matter. Rather than forming a Boolean lattice as in extensional (...)and intensional semantic theories, the space of propositions forms a non-interlaced bilattice. After motivating a departure from tradition by way of a number of plausible principles for subject-matter, I will provide a Finean state semantics for a novel theory of propositions, presenting arguments against the convexity and nonvacuity constraints which Fine (2016, 2017a,b) introduces. I will then move to compare the resulting logic of propositional identity (PI) with Correias (2016) logic of generalised identity (GI), as well as the first degree fragment of Angells (1989) logic of analytic containment (AC). The paper concludes by extending PI to include axioms and rules for a subject-matter operator, providing a much broader theory of subject-matter than the principles with which I will begin. (shrink)

Evaluating Land Use/Land Cover Change and Its Socioeconomic Implications in Agarfa District of Bale Zone, Southeastern Ethiopia.Teha Turi, Hussien Hayicho & Haji Kedir - manuscript
A systematic analysis of land use/cover change is so decisive to exactly understand the extent of change and take essential measures to curb down the rate (...)of changes and protect the land cover resources sustainably. This land use/land cover change study was conducted in Agarfa district of Bale zone, Oromia Regional State, Southeastern Ethiopia. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the trends, drivers and its socio-economic and environmental implication in study area. A descriptive research method was employed to achieve the intended objectives of the study. In the three years (1976, 1995, and 2014) Landsat Satellite images and socio-economic survey were the main data sources for this study. ERDAS Imagine and Arch-GIS tools were used to classify and generate land use/land cover maps of the study area. Survey questionnaires, key informant interviews, and field observation were employed to obtain information on drivers and its socio-economic and environmental implication in the district. The results show that the land use/land cover of the study area had changed dramatically during the period of 38 years. A rapid loss of forest land and shrub land cover in the landscape took place between 1976 and 2014. Conversely, agriculture and grazing lands were increased by 30% and 42% respectively at the expense of the lost land use/land cover types. Forest land is the most converted cover type during the entire study period. In the 38 years, forest lands diminished by over 65% of the original forest cover that was existed at the base year (1976). Local climate change, declining agricultural productivity and livestock quantity and quality and scarcity of fuel wood and constructional materials were some of the socio-economic and livelihood impacts of land use and land cover change of the study area. Thus, this finding affords information to land users and policy makers on extent of the change and social forces leading to this changes and its subsequent implication on local socio-economic and environmental conditions of the study area. Water Requirement of Rice in Different Agro-Potential Zones Based on Aridity Indices by Using Geographic Information System.Sahrish Anwar & Mr Muhammad Amin - 2018 - International Journal of Academic and Applied Research (IJAAR) 2 (10):40-45.
Abstract: Aridity indices are widely used as an indicator of moisture availability for crops growth. Our main objective is to determine spatial variability of aridity in (...)Punjab, Pakistan by using different aridity indices to calculate water requirement for Rice. Climate data of eighteen weather stations in all over Punjab were collected for 25 years (1991-2016). Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) was calculated by using Modified Penman Monteith method. Annual rainfall and annual ETo was interpolated by using Inverse distance weighted method in Arc GIS 10.3 software. Interpolated data were validated by Geo-statistical analysis, presented results with 99 % accuracy and Root mean square error was -0.00024. All aridity indices were calculated by using Raster calculations and mapped in GIS environment. Agro-potential zone maps based on aridity indices were developed by using Geographic Information System (GIS). Daily and monthly water requirement for Rice crop in all zones were calculated by multiplying ETo with Crop factor (Kc) values. Monthly water requirements for rice in Zone1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 were 816, 857, 798, 772, 770, 642 mm respectively. Optimum Seasonal water requirement for rice was 887 mm. This study will be helpful in predicting moisture availability and water need for Rice in all zones for farmers, field activity planners and policy makers. (shrink)

Mapping the Deep Blue Oceans.Rasmus Grønfeldt Winther - 2019 - In Timothy Tambassi (ed.), The Philosophy of GIS. pp. 99-123.
The ocean terrain spanning the globe is vast and complexfar from an immense flat plain of mud. To map these depths accurately and wisely, we must (...)understand how cartographic abstraction and generalization work both in analog cartography and digital GIS. This chapter explores abstraction practices such as selection and exaggeration with respect to mapping the oceans, showing significant continuity in such practices across cartography and contemporary GIS. The role of measurement and abstractionas well as of political and economic power, and sexual and personal biasin these sciences is illustrated by the biographies of Marie Tharp and Bruce Heezen, whose mapping of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge precipitated a paradigm shift in geology.
