Aim: Low professional help-seeking intention (PHSI) hinders effective treatment of mental illness. PHSI among Chinese students is still understudied and under-recognized. This study aimed to evaluate the status of PHSI and its associated risk factors among Chinese medical students. -/- Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Hainan province, South China, between January 1, 2021, and May 31, 2021. A total of 2182 medical students were recruited and surveyed via an anonymous structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify (...) the factors associated with PHSI. -/- Results: Among the 2182 medical students (mean age 21.0 years (SD = 3.70), 61.5% females), those with and without PHSI were 72.0% and 28.0%, and 16.4% with moderate to severe depression. Male students, those with a high level of depression stigma, serious family dysfunction, and heavy dependence on mobile phones were significantly less likely to seek professional mental health help, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.5, 2.0, 2.1, and 1.7, respectively. -/- Conclusion: A significant proportion of Chinese medical students demonstrate low PHSI, influenced by factors such as gender, depression stigma, family dysfunction, and mobile phone dependence. Future interventions aimed at increasing medical students’ PHSI should prioritize reducing depression stigma, mitigating reliance on mobile phone use, and enhancing family function to address these key barriers to seeking professional mental health support. Authoritarian parenting has long been associated with Western individualism and improved child development. This study examined the relationship between cultural values, parenting styles, and children’s perceived competence in Hong Kong. A total of 48 parents from local Chinese families, 49 parents from South Asian families, and 105 children (24 local Chinese and 81 South Asian) aged 5–6 years participated in the study. Self-report questionnaires on adherence to Asian cultural values and parenting style were administered to parents. The Pictorial Survey on (...) Children’s Perceived Competence was administered to children by trained research assistants. The results contradicted two long-standing assumptions on Asian cultural values and parenting styles. A scarcity mindset is considered to impact consumer behaviors. Our research aimed to examine the moderating effect of the scarcity mindset on the relationship between mental accounting and hedonic (vs. utilitarian) consumption. We conducted an online experimental design (mental accounting: windfall gains vs. hard-earning gains; consumption: hedonic products vs. utilitarian products) and verified our hypotheses in two distinct samples: a student sample and an adult sample. Our results showed that consumers who received windfall gains tended to use it for hedonic (...) consumption rather than utilitarian consumption. Intriguingly, such an effect was insignificant under a high level of a scarcity mindset but significant under a low level of the scarcity mindset. Moreover, consumers who received hard-earning gains tended to spend the money on utilitarian (vs. hedonic) consumption. However, we did not detect the impact of the scarcity mindset on such effects. Our research suggested an asymmetric effect of the scarcity mindset on hedonic (vs. utilitarian) consumption under two different mental accounts. It highlights the important role of the scarcity mindset in consumer behaviors, which leaves avenues for future research to understand marketing promotion strategies for distinct products. (shrink)

Après avoir proposé une philosophie structuraliste, Ruyer la modifia à la lumière des découvertes de l'embryogenèse, puis il proposa une interprétation des concepts unificateurs de la cybernétique mécaniste. In a text summarising his own development, Ruyer stated about the philosophical critique of information theory that it "is what can give the most long-lasting hope of getting to something like a new theology." After propounding a structuralist philosophy, and distinguishing between form and structure, to then modify it in the light of discoveries in embryogenesis, Ruyer offered a re-evaluation of the unifying concepts of mechanistic cybernetics. Thinking about it and about information theory, he defended the idea that this cybernetics was in reality an inverted reading of the real one, which would allow us to read in experience itself traces of the morphogenetic power, apprehended as the axiological field. On some transversal points, the development of forms in biology and genetics, the stochastic genesis of order, the identification of information with either psychological and mental, or physical reality, behaviour, and the access to meaning, this work exposes the main ideas of Ruyer while situating them in the context of the breadth of others' contributions. The pragmatist philosophical current, born in the United States, was responsible for consolidating the line of legal reasoning aimed at obtaining the results that best meet social desires and human hopes. Legal Pragmatism is not presented as a Theory of Law, consubstantiating itself, in reality, in a method based on argumentation, capable of substantiating decision making. Finally, an attempt was made to ponder on Legal (...) Pragmatism in the Brazilian legal system, as a guide for new perspectives on the application of Law, with emphasis on the recent changes in the Law of Introduction to the Rules of Brazilian Law (Lei de Introdução às Normas do Direito Brasileiro). Known as the Darwin of the twenty-first century, the German biologist Ernst Walter Mayr (1904-2005) studied a great variety of subjects such as Ornithology, Genetics, Evolution, Classification, History, and Philosophy of Biology. This scientist was a giant of the previous century and an icon of Evolutionary Biology. He became famous for his Biological Species Concept and his conclusion that allopatry is the main cause for the origin of species. He provided a decisive contribution to the New Systematics and was the (...) pioneer of the punctuated equilibrium idea. Mayr was one of the main architects of the evolutionary synthesis as also of the Neo-Darwinian wave. Evaluated together, all of his works reveal several elements of his ambition – to organize a philosophical conception inherent for Biology. An assiduous defender of autonomous Biology, Mayr asserted that four sets of factors in Biology differ from those in the Exact Sciences: (I) refutation of essentialism, mechanism, vitalism, and teleology; (II) some physical principles cannot be applied to Biology; (III) absence of general laws in Biology; and (IV) basic principles of biology and their specific character cannot be applied to the inanimate world. The present study took as an axis a minor or even invisible theme from the Ernst Mayr literature and aims to analyze critically the theoretical and epistemological basis that subsidizes – or not– the affirmation that Biology is an autonomous Science. - O biólogo alemão Ernst Walter Mayr (1904-2005), conhecido como o Darwin do século XXI, trabalhou com uma grande variedade de temas: Ornitologia, Genética, Evolução, Classificação, História e Filosofia da Biologia. Esse cientista foi um dos gigantes do século XX e um ícone para a Biologia Evolutiva. Ficou famoso com o seu Conceito Biológico de Espécie e sua conclusão de que a alopatria era a principal causa da origem das espécies. Forneceu uma contribuição decisiva à Nova Sistemática, foi precursor da ideia de equilíbrio pontuado e um dos principais arquitetos da síntese evolutiva, bem como do movimento Neodarwinista. Quando avaliados em conjunto, seus trabalhos revelam os diversos elementos de sua ambição – organizar um corpo de concepções filosóficas próprias da Biologia. Defensor assíduo de uma Biologia autônoma, Mayr afirmou que há quatro conjuntos de fatores que diferenciam a Biologia do conjunto das Ciências Exatas: (I) refutação do essencialismo, do mecanicismo, do vitalismo e da teleologia; (II) convicção de que certos princípios da Física não podem ser aplicados à Biologia; (III) ausência de leis naturais universais em Biologia; e (IV) percepção do caráter único de certos princípios básicos da Biologia não aplicáveis ao mundo inanimado. The importation of Lacanian psychoanalysis into film theory in the 1970s and 1980s ushered in a new era of cinema scholarship and criticism. Figures including Raymond Bellour, Laura Mulvey, and Christian Metz are often considered the pioneers of applying Lacanian psychoanalysis in the context of film theory, most notably through their writings in Screen Journal. However, where French and British scholarship on Lacan and film reached its limits, American Lacanianism flourished. When Joan Copjec’s now classic essay “The Orthopsychic Subject: Film (...) Theory and the Reception of Lacan” was published in 1989, the trajectory of Lacanian film theory would become radically altered; as Todd McGowan recently put it, the “butchered operation” on Lacan committed by Mulvey and (quoting Copjec) the “Foucaultianization” of Lacan under the auspices of Screen Journal were finally indicted in one gesture through Copjec’s critique. Copjec and McGowan’s unique American view of Lacan marks a pivotal point in the convergence of psychoanalytic theory and cinema studies; by seeking to wrest Lacan from historist/deconstructionist theories of the subject, and by revisiting Lacan beyond the mirror stage, Copjec and McGowan can be said to have instantiated a resuscitation or even a renaissance of Lacanian theory in film studies in particular and in American scholarship more generally. In this essay, this renaissance of Lacanian theory is examined, focusing on the innovations these two American thinkers brought to psychoanalytic film theory and the multiple paths carved out into other disciplines that followed. First, a detailed summation of the contentions between screen theory and Copjec’s position is introduced, as well as McGowan’s assessment thereof. Then, the trajectory of psychoanalytic film theory after Copjec’s arrival is the focus, including the major innovations in her thought from cinematic subjectivity to sexual difference (most notably from Read My Desire) and the way her position spread to philosophy and ontology. Finally, the article identifies the limitations of Copjec’s and McGowan’s thought and seeks new possibilities through which we may continue to apply psychoanalysis to the cinema in the wake of these two important thinkers. L’importation de la psychanalyse lacanienne dans la théorie du film au cours des années 1970 et 1980 a apporté une nouvelle ère de recherche et de critique cinématographiques. Des figures comme Raymond Bellour, Laura Mulvey et Christian Metz sont souvent considérées comme étant les pionniers dans l’application de la psychanalyse lacanienne au contexte de la théorie du film, surtout dans leurs écrits pour le Screen Journal. Par contre, là où les recherches françaises et britanniques sur Lacan et la cinématographie ont atteint leurs limites, le lacanisme américain a prospéré. La publication en 1989 de « The Orthopsychic Subject: Film Theory and the Reception of Lacan », l’essai classique de Joan Copjec, a complètement changé la trajectoire de la théorie lacanienne du film; comme Todd McGowan l’a récemment exprimé, « l’opération massacrée » commise sur Lacan par Mulvey et (citant Copjec) la « Foucaultisation » de Lacan sous les auspices de Screen Journal avaient finalement été accusées d’un seul coup par la critique de Copjec. Le point de vue uniquement américain de Copjec et de McGowan sur Lacan marque un tournant dans la convergence de la théorie psychanalytique et des études cinématographiques. En cherchant à arracher Lacan des théories historicistes/déconstructivistes du sujet, et en revisitant Lacan au-delà du stade du miroir, Copjec et McGowan ont instancié une ressuscitation, voire une renaissance, de la théorie lacanienne dans les études cinématographiques en particulier et dans les études américaines en général. Dans cet article, cette renaissance de la théorie lacanienne est examinée, mettant l’accent sur les innovations que ces deux penseurs américains ont apportées à la théorie psychanalytique du film et les multiples chemins tracés dans d’autres disciplines subséquentes. Premièrement, un résumé détaillé des différends entre la théorie du film et la position de Copjec est présenté, ainsi que l’évaluation de McGowan à ce sujet. Puis, la trajectoire de la théorie psychanalytique du film après l’arrivée de Copjec est mise de l’avant, notamment les innovations importantes de sa pensée de la subjectivité à la différence sexuelle (particulièrement dans Read My Desire) et la manière dont sa position s’est propagée dans la philosophie et l’ontologie. Na Grécia antiga era um assunto pouco, ou quase nada, discutido entre os cidadãos. Pensadores renomados de tal época, como Platão e Aristóteles, deixaram a discussão do trabalho para um último plano. Após várias transformações sociais entre (...) diferentes eras e povos, o trabalho foi ganhando espaço nos debates entre os povos, como os caldeus, hebreus e romanos. O trabalho conferiu-se no escopo da discussão social. Na Idade Média, com Agostinho, Santo Aquino e outros o labor foi concebido como algo benéfico e divino. In ancient Greece it was a little matter, or almost nothing, discussed among the citizens. Renowned thinkers of such a time, like Plato and Aristotle, left the discussion of the work for a last plan. After several social transformations between different eras and peoples, work was gaining space in the debates among peoples, such as the Chaldeans, Hebrews and Romans. The work has taken place within the scope of social discussion. In the Middle Ages, with Augustine, Saint Aquinas and others the work was conceived as something beneficial and divine. A VISÃO GREGA DE TRABALHO -/- Comecemos pelos gregos, uma civilização excitante que, durante muitos séculos antes de Cristo, já começava a elaborar riquíssimas reflexões sobre vários aspectos da vida humana. No entanto, surpreende aqueles de nós que já ler os primeiros filósofos gregos, como entre tantas análises rigorosas e “diálogos”, um elemento tão central na vida social dos povos, como o trabalho havia tido escassa repercussão. A explicação só faz sentido, justamente, ao analisar a valorização que esses grandes pensadores tinham acerca do nosso objeto de estudo que é o trabalho. Embora, como supracitado, os gregos não tivessem uma visão unânime sobre o trabalho, não é menos certo assinalar que para esta civilização o trabalho foi considerado um fato altamente desvalorizado. O trabalho, para eles, dado a sua vinculação com a dimensão de constrangimento e necessidades, limitava a liberdade dos indivíduos, condição indispensável para integrar o mundo da “pólis” na qualidade de cidadão. O homem livre realizava atividades absolutamente desinteressadas: a atividade intelectual (que não era considerada trabalho) fazia parte do ócio e da contemplação. O trabalho, reservado apenas aos escravos, como bem sinala Hopenhayn (1955), significava uma mera função produtiva. Portanto, o escravo passou a ser unicamente uma força de trabalho. Como tal, ele não tem personalidade e pertence ao seu mestre, como uma coisa entre muitas. Como objeto de propriedade, escapa ao pensamento antropológico que domina a filosofia sofista e socrática, porque para o cidadão grego falar de escravo não implica um sujeito pensante, senão uma coisa ou, no máximo, a força. Também escapa ao pensamento platônico, porque, como uma coisa, parece totalmente desvalorizado na construção idealista-dualista da realidade (HOPENHAYN, 1988. p. 23 – Tradução própria). -/- Três termos fundamentais que devemos recordar da tradição grega: -/- 1 – Ponos: penalidade, fadiga; -/- 2 – Banausia: trabalho mecânico, e -/- 3 – Ergon: realização. -/- Vejamos como essa noção de trabalho é construída como algo servil (ponos), ao qual uma visão positiva de lazer e contemplação foram contrastadas como uma atividade puramente humana e libertadora. As raízes do supracitado são encontradas no valor eticamente supremo da autarquia socrática. Segundo essa noção alcunhada por Sócrates (469-399 a.C.), todo aquele que trabalha está submetido tanto à matéria como aos homens para quem trabalha. Nessa medida, sua vida carece de autonomia e, portanto, de valor moral. Naturalmente, não só os escravos, mas também qualquer trabalhador dedicado a todos os tipos de tarefas manuais, foram desprezados por um pensamento helênico indubitavelmente aristocrático. Para Platão (427-347 a.C.), de origem aristocrática, descendente do último rei de Atenas e discípulo de Sócrates, a autarquia continua a ser perpetrada como um valor ético supremo e, em consonância com os interesses da aristocracia fundiária, afirmava que somente a agricultura evocava autêntica autonomia. Dessa forma, o pensamento platônico restringiu a participação política a escravos, comerciantes e artesãos. Todos eles têm em comum a dependência das condições materiais em que produzem e trocam mercadorias. O plano político estará intimamente relacionado ao econômico-trabalhista: somente quem é capaz de governar a si mesmo (e como sabemos, acontece com aqueles que não trabalham ou possuem terras), pode governar os outros. Somente a liberação total da prática mundana do trabalho abre as possibilidades de dedicar-se, como fez Platão, à contemplação (σχολή), à filosofia e às ciências, e por meio disso saber distinguir o bem do mal, o justo do injusto, o verdadeiro do falso. Quem poderia dedicar-se a tais “tarefas nobres”? Evidentemente, aqueles que não precisam fazer parte da população trabalhadora, isto é, a aristocracia. Esse sistema de governo aristocrático foi defendido, obviamente, por Platão. Em sua “A República” sinala que o governo perfeito é o aristocrático, e que a este se sucedem a timocracia (governo dos guerreiros), a oligarquia (dos ricos) e a democracia (“governo daqueles que amam o prazer, a mudança e a liberdade), que perece por seus excessos nas mãos de alguns homem audaz que se coloca à frente do povo para defender a democracia e “do tronco desses protetores do povo nasce o tirano”, dando origem à tirania.(2) Em seu diálogo “Político” podemos ler: Aqueles que possuem a si mesmos através da compra, e aqueles que podem ser chamados sem nenhuma discussão de escravos, não participam da arte real [...] E todos aqueles que são livres, se dedicam espontaneamente a atividades servis como as supracitadas, transportando e trocando produtos da agricultura e de outras artes; que nos mercados, indo de cidade em cidade por mar e terra, trocando dinheiro por outras coisas ou por dinheiro, o que chamamos de banqueiros, comerciantes, marinheiros e revendedores, poderão, por acaso, reivindicar para eles algo da ciência política? [...], mas também aqueles que estão dispostos a prestar serviços a todos por salários ou por subsídios, nunca os encontramos participantes na arte de governar [...] Como os chamaremos? Como você acabou de dizer agora: servidores, mas não governantes dos estados (PLATÃO, 1983. pp. 237-8 – adaptado). Esse estado ideal que Platão projetou em seus ensinamentos estava longe, a propósito, da democracia ateniense defendida por Péricles. De certa forma, Platão só confiava em uma elite no poder constituída por uns poucos (oligarquia) que não deveriam se render às tarefas servis da produção e circulação das riquezas. Para ele, as crianças aristocráticas deveriam ser selecionadas desde a infância, recebendo uma educação suficiente tanto em filosofia quanto nas “artes da guerra”. Aos trinta anos, eles já seriam capazes de passar por um exame donde seriam selecionados os “filósofos-reis” encarregados do governo. De fato, no entanto, suas concepções de governo nunca poderiam ser executadas com pureza; ou pela chamada “contrarrevolução aristocrática”, ou pela invasão estrangeira subsequente. Essa visão do trabalho que estamos a analisar, como bem sinala Henri Arvon (1914- 1992), conduz a uma sociedade basicamente conservadora e estancada no produtivo. (3) A ideia de liberdade, ócio e contemplação como valores superiores, propõe um desprezo pelo trabalho que, como vimos, é uma atividade puramente transformadora. Há aqueles que, mediante tal contestação, arriscam fundamentar que grande parte do subdesenvolvimento tecnológico na Grécia derive justamente a essa cultura tão peculiar em relação ao trabalho. Caso contrário, se houvesse escravos, por que avançar em conhecimentos que facilitaram o trabalho? Não nos surpreende, nesse sentido, que uma civilização capaz de criar conhecimentos espetaculares em áreas particularmente complexas como a geometria (Euclides), por outro lado, não soubesse (ou não gostaria) de avançar em conhecimentos técnicos aplicáveis ao campo econômico-trabalhista. Já vimos como a cidadania era o escopo da de alguns aristocratas da civilização helênica. Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) sinalava que os gregos distinguiam entre os escravos, os inimigos vencidos (dmôes ou douloi) que estavam encarregados do trabalho doméstico, e os demiourgoi, homens livres para se deslocarem do domínio privado para o público. Somente depois do século V, sinala Arendt, a pólis começou a classificar as ocupações de acordo com os esforços que eles exigiam. Nisso, Aristóteles (384-322 a.C.) teve que desempenhar um papel preponderante que colocou aqueles cujo “corpo está mais deformado” na faixa mais baixa. Ele não admitiria, portanto, aos estrangeiros (os escravos), nem tampouco aos banausoi, antes dos demiourgoi, trabalhadores e artesãos que deviam resignar-se ao mundo dos “oikos”. Estes, não só estavam submetidos à necessidade como eram incapazes de ser livres, mas também incapazes de governar a parte “animal” do seu ser (República, 590). Serão eles, não obstante, aqueles que permitem o florescimento da chamada democracia helênica, pois, quem senão os trabalhadores (escravos ou artesãos) poderia manter com seu esforço o ócio e a contemplação dos “homens livres”, cidadãos do mundo? Como foi supracitado, será Aristóteles quem delimitará ainda mais os direitos de cidadania. Sua cidade ideal, como em Platão, diferenciaria os governantes dos governados. O primeiro, constituído pela classe militar, estadistas, magistrados e sacerdócio. O segundo, pelos agricultores, artesãos e os camponeses. Com os comerciantes há uma certa ambivalência: embora ele considerava uma ocupação antinatural, estava disposto a admiti-los até certo ponto em sua cidade ideal, cuja base seguiria sendo a escravidão. Em sua Política, ele explana: A cidade mais perfeita não fará do trabalhador manual (artesão) um cidadão. Caso o admitir como tal, a definição de virtude cívica [...] não alcança todos os cidadãos, nem apenas os homens livres, mas só os que estão isentos de trabalhos indispensáveis à sobrevivência. Destes, os que estão a serviço de um só indivíduo, são escravos; os que servem a comunidade, são trabalhadores manuais (artesãos) ou trabalhadores não qualificados (ARISTÓTELES, 1998. p. 203). Tampouco compreenderá os agricultores como reivindicava Platão: “Tampouco deverão ser agricultores os futuros cidadãos, pois para a formação de sua virtude e para a atividade política, o ócio é necessário”. Essa prolifera discussão ocorreu em uma civilização onde começaram a surgir as primeiras mudanças produtivas derivadas do crescimento econômico feito do descobrimento do ferro, e sua posterior divisão do trabalho, onde florescem os grupos de comerciantes e a aristocracia proprietária de terras começa a dominar. Os pensadores da época, mais aliados a estes últimos, contrariavam os princípios da acumulação comercial. Em sua Política, Aristóteles aconselha os cidadãos a absterem-se de qualquer profissão mecânica e de toda especulação mercantil. O primeiro, porque limita intelectualmente, e o segundo, porque degrada o ético. Somente o ócio (scholé), para esses pensadores, permite a virtuosidade e a capacidade de julgar. A Koinonia politiké (comunidade dos homens livres) era típica daqueles que não precisavam de trabalho, relegando a população trabalhadora ao mero âmbito da reprodução material (chrematistiké), o que só era possível em um contexto de alta divisão do trabalho onde um grupo minoritário (oligarquia) vivia à custa do trabalho da maioria (muitos deles escravos). O termo “ócio” provém de “scholé”, entendido entre os gregos como tempo para si mesmo, para a contemplação (sjolé) e, portanto, para a formação (scholé = escola). Desse ponto de vista, o ócio para os gregos é um fim em si mesmo. Entre os romanos, no entanto, adquire outra conotação. Em latim octium, designa o campo contraposto ao neo-octium (negócio), ou seja, é o tempo de descanso que permite dedicar-se ao negócio. Tal visão sobre o trabalho e o ócio, respectivamente, não foi, no entanto, como supracitado no início, unanimemente desenvolvida em toda a história da civilização helênica. Os textos de Homero(4) (séculos IX e VIII a.C.) são mais reservados a respeito, mas acima de tudo, na Grécia antiga encontramos autores como Hesíodo (século VIII), que postulavam outras teses. Para o autor de “Os trabalhos e os dias”, o trabalho se constituía em um justo e necessário castigo que Zeus impôs aos homens pelo pecado de Prometeu. Note a similitude com a crença bíblica que veremos adiante. Hesíodo explana: Lembre-se sempre do meu conselho e trabalhe [...] os deuses e os homens se indignam com quem ocioso vive, semelhante em caráter aos zangões sem ferrão, que consomem o esforço das abelhas [...] O trabalho não é nenhuma desonra; desonra é não trabalhar (HESÍODO, 2012. p. 93 e 95). Também entre alguns sofistas (aqueles que vendiam sua sabedoria a quem gostaria de comprá-la), como Protágoras (século V a.C.), “o primeiro e o maior deles”(5), coloca o estudo e a arte (técnica) na mesma faixa, e Antifonte (século V a.C.) disse: “[...] e as honras e preços, e toda a espécie de encorajamento que Deus incumbiu aos homens, devem necessariamente resultar de fadiga e suor”. Como conviveu a cultura grega com essas noções tão diferentes? Tenho a ideia, juntamente com Hopenhayn, que o desprezo dos pensadores gregos pelo manual foi causado pela violência dos guerreiros e dos aristocratas de plantão, que impuseram aos seja derrotados o jugo. Do trabalho árduo e difícil. Porque a aristocracia queria trabalhar nessas condições? A própria divisão do trabalho em si possibilitou o crescimento da civilização helênica, estava gerando diferentes classes com visões distintas sobre o trabalho. Por outro lado, surgiram os camponeses pobres, os derrotados e aqueles que tinham que viver do trabalho artesanal. Essas pessoas, na maioria das vezes isoladas do mundo da “polis”, gerariam suas próprias leituras dos acontecimentos, seus próprios espaços para o desenvolvimento cultural, inclusive sua própria religião, distante daquela imposta pela visão aristocrática, olímpica, contemplativa e estética dos “homens livres”. -/- 2. A VISÃO DOS CALDEUS ACERCA DO TRABALHO -/- A leitura de outros povos e civilizações sobre este tema tem sido diferente. Entre os caldeus, por exemplo, a visão pejorativa analisada entre os gregos não é registrada. Nas escrituras sagradas da religião de Zaratustra (o Avesta), lemos: “É um santo aquele que constrói uma casa, na qual mantém o fogo, o gado, sua mulher, seus filhos, os bons párias. Aquele que faz a terra produzir trigo, que cultiva os frutos do campo, cultiva corretamente a pureza” (HOPENHAYN, 1988. p. 35). Para os caldeus, como se pode observar, o trabalho implica, de uma posição diametralmente oposta à helênica, uma contribuição na ordem econômica, mas também na espiritual. Trabalhar não é só “cultivar o trigo” (dimensão das necessidades fisiológicas), mas também “cultivar a pureza”, dimensão esta, relacionada com a satisfação das necessidades espirituais. Por que apreciamos uma diferença tão acentuada entre essas culturas? Provavelmente, os diferentes graus de desenvolvimento dos povos levaram a isso. Enquanto entre os gregos primava uma divisão do trabalho, onde alguns tinham o status de “homens livres” dedicados à contemplação e ao ócio, outros não tinham escolha a não ser trabalhar, em uma situação de domínio em relação às naturezas daqueles que o empregaram. Esse não foi o caso dos caldeus, que possuía um escasso dividido trabalho, em que a todos se correspondia uma atividade laboriosa. -/- 3. A VISÃO DOS HEBREUS SOBRE O TRABALHO -/- No meio do caminho entre os caldeus e os gregos, encontramos a avaliação do trabalho feita pelos hebreus, dessa vez, tingindo de ambivalências. Tal como ponderava Hesíodo entre os gregos, para os hebreus, o trabalho se constituía de um mal necessário; em um meio para expiar os pecados; dessa vez não de Prometeu, mas de Adão e Eva. Vamos ver, no entanto, alguns aspectos mais complexos. A primeira coisa a se notar da perspectiva hebraica (compartilhada com o cristianismo) é o que se resulta da leitura do livro de Gênesis, aquela história poética e cheia de imagens para elucidar facilmente a origem da criação. Lá se estabelece a ideia de um deus criador-trabalhador: “No princípio Deus criou o céu e a terra [...] No sétimo dia Deus já havia concluído a obra que realizara, e nesse dia descansou [...] de toda a obra que realizara na criação”.(7) Esse Deus como primeira causa (São Tomás de Aquino (1225-1274)) denota laboriosidade seu correspondente descanso, um binômio que será fundamental para compreender a evolução do direito do trabalho e do direito ao descanso semanal contemporâneo. Digamos, em segundo lugar, que o Senhor Deus providenciou o trabalho no Éden: “O Senhor Deus colocou o homem no jardim do Éden para cuidar dele e cultivá-lo”.(8) Portanto, não é certa a ideia de que o trabalho é o resultado do pecado: ao contrário, é um trabalho árduo aquele que deriva do pecado segundo a tradição hebraico-cristã. Antes, na ausência do pecado, havia uma espécie de bom trabalho. Foi o pecado original, que levou Deus a condenar Adão e Eva, e por isso a toda a humanidade, a “ganhar o pão com o suor da sua testa”. “Por isso o Senhor Deus o mandou embora do jardim do Éden para cultivar o solo do qual fora tirado”. (9) O Talmude diz: “Se o homem não encontra seu alimento como animais e pássaros, precisa ganhá-los, isso se deve ao pecado”. Essa sentença, de caráter histórico, promove a ideia de trabalho como meio para expiar o pecado original, mas também como meio para produzir; isto é, legitimando a mudança inerente a todo trabalho e, portanto, legitimando também aquela vontade transformadora que caracterizou desde sempre os povos hebreus.(10) Agora, ao contrário dos caldeus, para os hebreus da antiguidade, o trabalho nunca teve um fim ético em si mesmo, mas foi constituído apenas como um meio. Essa visão esteve sempre presente, e caracteriza muito claramente a concepção que muitos integrantes de nossas sociedades contemporâneas possuem sobre o trabalho, além da religião de cada um. -/- 4. OS ROMANOS E O TRABALHO -/- Os romanos, por sua vez, deram uma importante contribuição para o desenvolvimento do conceito de trabalho. Se bem que, a grosso modo, não houvesse grandes diferenças com o pensamento dos gregos, com quem eles tinham em comum, além disso, uma maior divisão do trabalho fruto do desenvolvimento econômico e o uso massivo de mão de obra escrava(11); a maior contribuição do ponto de vista de sua originalidade histórica estava presente na tradição jurídica que inauguraria o Império Romano. O maior impacto por meios jurídicos e não filosóficos é explicado pelo fato de que os romanos, ao contrário dos gregos, não conseguiram “inspirar” a produção de grandes pensadores sociais. Com efeito, para os romanos, como o escravo não era considerado uma pessoa, o viam-no desprovido de personalidade jurídica. Isso conduziu a negação da relação de trabalho entre a pessoa encarregada de um trabalho manual (escravo) e seu dono. Tal relação correspondia, acima de tudo, ao direito de propriedade que os juristas romanos haviam garantido quase sem limites para seus cidadãos. O problema, como aponta Hopenhayn, surgiu quando o proprietário não ocupa seu escravo, mas aluga-o para terceiros. Surge assim a figura do arrendamento de serviços, que deriva do arrendamento das coisas. Porém, como na realidade o que se alugava era a força de trabalho, a qualidade jurídica desloca-se para a atividade realizada pelo escravo. Dessa forma, a atividade do trabalhador, primeiro do escravo, posteriormente do homem livre, começa a ser tratada como uma coisa, e se converte em antecedente do arrendamento de serviços do Direito Civil moderno. Ademais, na tradição romana, o trabalho manual estava desprestigiado. Cícero (106-43 a.C.) em De Officiis, estabeleceu com fria claridade “ipsa merces est auctoramentum servitius”(12) (todo trabalho assalariado é trabalho escravo). A vida era difícil para esses trabalhadores: nos territórios sob domínio romano, Augusto (63-14 a.C.) tinha imposto um tributo à todos os homens que exerciam algum tipo de trabalho manual, além do imposto à residência, às valas e outros mais particulares como o imposto para a detenção de porcos. Certamente, aqueles que levaram a pior parte no tempo da Roma Imperial foram os escravos (servi) sob domínio e propriedade de seus donos (domini). Me seus tempos de auge, a demanda de escravos em Roma era de 500.000 ao ano. Se compararmos com os 60.000 escravos negros trazidos a América nos anos de maior tráfico, teremos uma ideia mais ou menos exata da magnitude desse triste fenômeno. -/- 5. O CRISTIANISMO E O TRABALHO -/- As mensagens do cristianismo primitivo, são inseridas logo, nesse tempo histórico, onde Roma se tornava o centro das maiores mobilizações de rebeldia da antiguidade. Isaías, nesse sentido, proclamaria que o Messias viria: “[...] a pregar boas novas aos abatidos, a vendar aos quebrantados de coração, a publicar liberdade aos cativos, e aos presos a abertura do cárcere”.(13) Jesus, efetivamente, incluiu em sua missão, mensagens de libertação aos pobres e oprimidos. Porém, ao contrário do supracitado, como bem sinala Eric Roll (1907-2005), dos antigos profetas hebreus, não o faria saudando as comunidades tribais com seu espírito de grupo; mas animado por uma mensagem mais universal e permanente, proclamando uma mudança mais completa e integral na conduta do homem em sociedade, onde os valores de justiça e amor se colocariam em um primeiro plano. Evidentemente, a mensagem do cristianismo primitivo, e mais concretamente de Cristo, distava muito dos filósofos gregos. Deixemos que Roll explique: Temos visto que as doutrinas econômicas de Platão e, em certa medida, de Aristóteles, nasciam da aversão aristocrática ao desenvolvimento do comercialismo e da democracia. Seus ataques contra os males que acarreta o afã de acumular as riquezas são reacionárias: olham para trás, e o de Cristo olha para frente, pois exige uma mudança total, mas relações humanas. Aqueles sonhavam com um estado ideal destinado a proporcionar a “boa vida” para os cidadãos livres unicamente e cujas fronteiras eram as da cidade-estado daquele tempo; Cristo pretendeu falar por todos e para todos os homens. Platão e Aristóteles haviam justificado a escravidão; os ensinamentos de Cristo sobre a fraternidade entre todos os homens e o amor universal eram incompatíveis com a ideia da escravidão, apesar das opiniões expostas depois por São Tomás de Aquino. Os filósofos gregos, interessados somente pelos cidadãos, sustentaram opiniões muito rígidas sobre a diferente dignidade das classes de trabalho, e consideravam as ocupações servis, com exceção da agricultura, como próprias apenas para os escravos. Cristo, ao dirigir-se aos trabalhadores de seu tempo, proclamou pela primeira vez a dignidade de todas as classes de trabalho, assim materiais como espirituais (1942. p. 42 – Tradução própria). Não pode escapar desse estudo, o fato de que o próprio Jesus Cristo herdou o ofício de carpinteiro de seu “Pai” José; e que escolheu seus discípulos entre os pescadores e artesãos da região. Essa visão primitiva do cristianismo, no entanto, deve ser analisada no quadro das escrituras sagradas do Antigo Testamento que compartilha com a cultura (e obviamente a religião) hebraica. Nesse sentido, o trabalho não deixa de ser um meio, descartando-se como um fim em si mesmo. Mas, agora atribuindo-lhe um novo valor, sempre em tento um meio para um fim virtuoso: o trabalho será fundamental para permitir a satisfação das necessidades de cada um, mas também seus frutos, deverão ser inseridos em uma dimensão comunitária, onde o “próximo” necessitado esperará a contribuição fraterna e solidária do cristão. O trabalho, nessa perspectiva, não só possibilita o “tomar”, mas também o “dar”. Em relação a dupla perspectiva, é onde podemos entender a crítica do cristianismo a acumulação da riqueza. Como aponta o evangelista Mateus, “acumular o tesouro no céu, onde nem a traça nem a ferrugem os consomem, e onde os ladrões não perfuram nem roubam. Onde está o seu tesouro está seu coração”. (14) Com São Paulo se incorpora um novo componente valioso: a obrigatoriedade moral do trabalho. Em sua carta aos Tessalonicenses dita claramente “ao que não trabalha que não coma”. Diz São Paulo: Vocês sabem em que forma têm que nos imitar: nós trabalhamos enquanto estivemos entre vocês, não pedimos a ninguém um pão que não teríamos ganhado, senão que, de noite e dia, trabalhamos duramente até nos cansarmos, para não ser carga para nenhum de vocês [...] Além disso, quando estávamos com vocês lhes demos está regra: se alguém não quiser trabalhar, não coma. Mas agora ouvimos que há entre vocês alguns que vivem sem nenhuma disciplina e não fazem nada, muito ocupados em meter-se em tudo. A estes lhes mandamos e lhes rogamos, por Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor, que trabalhem tranquilos para ganhar a vida (II Tes. 3:10). Essa frase, entendida somente no contexto de uma sociedade donde não existia um conceito de desemprego tal como entendemos atualmente, é curiosamente reproduzida pelo modelo soviético em pleno século XX. Com efeito, a Constituição da União Soviética estabeleceu em seu Artigo 12: “O trabalho é, na Rússia, uma questão de dever e de honra para todo cidadão fisicamente capaz. Essa obrigação é baseada no princípio: “quem não trabalha não come”. (15)(16) Para São Paulo, o trabalho deve ser o meio para ganhar a vida. Ele quis ser exemplo e enquanto pregava continuava trabalhando, presumivelmente como tecelão de tendas. A obrigatoriedade moral se aplica na medida em que a pessoa está em condições de o fazer. Para os incapacitados a fazê-lo (idosos, crianças, deficientes, doentes, acidentados etc.) existia a obrigatoriedade do socorro segundo a máxima do amor (ágape) ao próximo. Essas sentenças morais têm hoje em dia uma importante quota de explicação para com as contemporâneas políticas sociais. -/- 6. O TRABALHO NA IDADE MÉDIA -/- A Idade Média, período que ocupa desde o crepúsculo do Império Romano do Ocidente no século V pelos bárbaros, até o século XV, com a queda de Constantinopla, evidentemente mostra um conjunto importante de escolas e pensadores que marcaram pautas importantes para discernir o valor do trabalho nas diferentes culturas. A organização econômica mais visível nestes mil anos, onde operou o trabalho, consistia em extensões grandes de latifúndios errados do Império Romano (o sistema econômico denominado feudalismo), onde (mediante a falta de escravos) recorreu-se à mão de obra camponesa para o trabalho. O sistema, implicava o arrendamento de parte dessas terras a ex-escravos ou homens livres, em troca de uma renda em dinheiro e espécies, além do cultivo das próprias terras senhoriais. Por certo, a figura do servo não distava muito da do escravo se tivermos em conta as condições de funcionamento do contrato de trabalho. O comércio também teve seu lugar no sistema feudal, o mesmo adquiriu grande importância em certas regiões ou lugares, à exemplo de Constantinopla. A atividade econômica seguia seu rumo na história, e depois dos séculos IX e X, o crescimento das forças produtivas deu lugar a uma maior acumulação por parte de componentes e artesãos e, por certo, a uma maior apropriação de excedentes por parte do Senhor feudal. Essa situação foi ativante para a construção dos primeiros Burgos ou cidades, onde o comércio e a indústria artesanal teriam um marco mais adequado para o seu desenvolvimento. Essa é a etapa do nascimento dos primeiros grêmios corporativos (17). Então para o século XII, a estrutura feudal começa a desmoronar porque a produção de determinados bens começa a ser mais eficiente em cidades e não no feudo. O dinheiro, então, passou a ganhar maior peso que a terra, o que obriga os senhores feudais a aumentar seus rendimentos. Isso leva a um empobrecimento lógico dos camponeses, o que não dura muito, porque na primeira metade do século XIV, a maior parte dos servos alcança sua liberdade. Por sua vez, nessa apertada síntese da história econômica da Idade Média, devemos assinalar que pelo século XIV, e depois das Cruzadas e o posterior desenvolvimento do comércio internacional entre os impérios arábico e bizantino, inaugura-se uma etapa pré-capitalista que durará três séculos. É lá que se levanta mais energética a voz de alguns homens da Igreja contra a tendência à exaltação da riqueza já começava a avivar-se na Europa. São Tomás de Aquino, nesse sentido, não considerará ao comércio pré-capitalista bom ou natural. No entanto, ele o julgava inevitável uma vez que era o meio ao qual o comerciante tinha que manter a sua família. Dessa forma, os lucros do comércio não era outra coisa senão o fruto do trabalho. Se tratava, então, de colocar o acento na justiça da mudança efetuada, para o qual Aquino recorre a Aristóteles, cuja análise sobre o valor de mudança é figurado no seu estudo da Justiça. Muitos padres da Igreja, desde então, pretenderam formular um conceito de “preço justo”. Nesse sentido, o Cristianismo apresenta uma evolução do seu pensamento sobre o comércio que partia de uma visão absolutamente contrária ao começo da Idade Média (Santo Agostinho (354-430), São Jerônimo (347-420) etc.), a outra mais transacionável, que acompanhou, sobretudo, o pensamento de Aquino. Algo similar ocorreu com outro dos “preceitos” da Igreja em matéria econômica: a usura. Esta era considerada pela igreja como a melhor forma de obter lucro. O mesmo evangelista Lucas (século I d.C.) foi categórico ao rejeitar essa linha de operações. A lei hebraica também fez isso, e podemos encontrar no livro do Êxodo (22,25) tal proibição a respeito. Mais atrás no tempo, há antecedentes de condenação à usura entre os hindus (Rigveda, cerca de 1500 a.C.) e budistas (século VI d.C.), além do Islã mais próximo do nosso tempo (século VI d.C.). Ao princípio da Idade Média, como testemunha Roll, a proibição somente alcançava a Igreja, já que o escasso desenvolvimento mercantil não merecia outra coisa. No final da Idade Média, no entanto, que a situação é outra; e a prática secular foi orientada no sentido de promover o empréstimo de dinheiro cobrando por isso um juro. Alarmada ante esses fatos, a Igreja condena mais uma vez a usura no Terceiro Concílio de Latrão de 1179. No mesmo escreveu e ensinou São Tomé (século I d.C.) e outros discípulos da Igreja. No entanto, as práticas econômicas foram minando a autoridade eclesial e está terminou, através de sucessivas etapas, por aceitar, em certas condições e sob certas circunstâncias, a cobrança de juros sobre a concessão de um empréstimo. Em tal sentido, um dos autores mais representativos só início da Idade Média foi Santo Agostinho. Foi este um dos pilares, em seu tempo, das noções “anticapitalistas” que foram seguidas e complementadas por homens do tamanho de São João (347-407), São Ambrósio (340-397), São Clemente (150-215), São Cipriano (200-258) entre outros. (18) Santo Agostinho valoriza o trabalho recordando em tal sentido a São Paulo, a que cita com muita frequência em seus textos. Segundo o Bispo de Hipona, todo trabalho manual é bom pelas razões dadas pelo cristianismo primitivo. Concilia, além disso, seu dualismo platônico, ao sustentar que enquanto o homem trabalha tem a alma livre, de modo que é perfeitamente compatível pensar em Deus ao mesmo tempo em que se trabalha. Essa particular sintonia entre o trabalho e a oração foi perfeitamente posta a prova pelos monges beneditinos, cujo lema “Ora Et Labora” (orar e trabalhar) é paradigmático. “Trabalha e não desesperes” dizia seu fundador, São Bento de Núrsia (480-547), de seus monastérios distribuídos em um primeiro momento a Subiaco, no início do século VI. Também corresponde a São Bento uma sentença que perdura até o dia de hoje no imaginário moral sobre o trabalho: “Otiositas inimica est animae” (a ociosidade é inimiga da alma), tal qual diz uma expressão popular castelhana: “el ocio es la madre de todos los vicios” (o ócio é a mãe de todos os vícios). Tomás de Aquino, alguns séculos depois, continua a reflexão sobre o trabalho e estabelece uma hierarquia de profissões, onde localiza o trabalho agrícola e artesanal acima do comercial. Uma quota de originalidade na história do pensamento sobre o trabalho consistiu em considerá-lo como uma obrigação somente se necessário para subsistir; ou dito de outra maneira: quem não tem necessidade de trabalhar não tem que fazê-lo. Isso sim, à falta de trabalho, devia dedicar-se à oração e contemplação divina, atividades por certo mais elevadas para o autor da Suma Teológica. Logo, considerará que Deus é a causa primária, a que tudo deve a sua existência; por derivação, o homem é causa segunda, procurando atreves do trabalho “criar” em suas dimensões humanas. “Entre todas as formas com que a criatura humana tenta realizar a semelhança divina, não há outra de relevo mais destacado que a de trabalhar, isto é, ser em o mundo causa novos efeitos”, disse o Santo. (19) Aquino, além disso, utilizando categorias platônicas, hierarquiza o trabalho, considerando o intelectual acima do manual. Chama “artes servis” a estes últimos, enquanto que o trabalho intelectual corresponde ao conjunto das “artes liberais”, dignas de maior remuneração ao fazer uso da inteligência. Esta distinção própria da Escolástica, dá lugar à divisão clássica entre as 7 artes liberais: o Trívium (gramática, retórica e dialética) e quadrivium (astronomia, geometria, aritmética e música). Outras contribuições de São Aquino têm a ver com sua posição diante do trabalho agrícola ao qual o considera como o melhor meio para assegurar a subsistência de um povo; a maior importância dada à vida contemplativa sobre a ativa, embora considerando a primeira como “laboriosa”; sua posição sobre a escravidão, que não considerava como natural, no entanto, entendê-la “útil”(20); e sua interpretação sobre o contrato de trabalho: neste, o operário não vende a si mesmo, nem seu corpo, nem sua inteligência, nem sequer sua faculdade de trabalho. Isso significa que o Direito Natural proíbe considerar o trabalho como um objeto de mudança. Propõe, em vez disso, considerar o contrato como um arrendamento de serviço. Em termos gerais, a valorização que sobre o trabalho se realiza na Idade Média, rebaixando ao trabalho manual em relação a outras tarefas, fica explícita na divisão tripartida que recorre, entre outros, Adalberão Bispo de Laon (947-1030): “Triplex Dei ergo domus est quae Creditor uma nunca oran, alii pugnat, Aliique laborant” (ternária é a casa do Senhor e não uma: aqui sobre a terra uns oram, outros lutam e outros trabalham). Não gostaria de deixar passar por alto, finalmente, entre os movimentos originados na Idade Média, a contribuição que sobre o tema do trabalho teve a ordem franciscana. Essa, contra o que muitos podem crer, é uma ordem não mendicante no sentido estrito, mas sim trabalhadora e de pobreza. São Francisco de Assis (1181/82-1226), no final do século XII, marcaria como ninguém dentro do cristianismo, uma vida ascética baseada no trabalho e na pobreza. Inclui, além disso, um elemento pela primeira vez descoberto na cultura europeia: o sentido da alegria que acompanha o trabalho. “Essa condição de 'suor de sua testa' com 'a alegria de seu coração' outorga ao trabalho uma condição diferenciada”. Avançando então na história da humanidade, entramos na época moderna, caracterizada por cinco grandes eventos: -/- 1. A decadência do poder moral da Igreja e o enfraquecimento de seu poder econômico frente ao da crescente burguesia; -/- 2. O renascimento intelectual e artístico; -/- 3. As viagens paras as índias e a descoberta da América; -/- 4. A formação e a constituição dos Estados-nação; -/- 5. As reformas religiosas de Lutero (1483-1546) e Calvino (1509-1564). -/- Nesse contexto, os séculos XV e XVI mostraram como o mercantilismo ia avançando apesar dos esforços de alguns pensadores da Igreja que eventualmente perderam o pulso diante do desenrolar dos acontecimentos. Sucessivas encíclicas papais terminaram por legitimar o interesse nos empréstimos e, por meio desta, levou-se a maior acumulação de riquezas por parte dos banqueiros. Esse foi o meio ideal para o desenvolvimento da atividade do mercador, para quem, o trabalho passou a ser considerado um meio para obter sucesso. Ao dinamizar-se a atividade econômica e mercantil, a visão humanista do trabalho começa a perder valor, realçando-se ao mesmo como um simples meio para fins de enriquecimento. Talvez a exceção a essa noção estendida entre os novos atores tenha sido a proporcionada pelo humanismo renascentista. Para Campanella (1568-1639), por exemplo, sua “Cidade solar”, não existe o divórcio entre trabalho manual e intelectual, isso quando o segundo começa a ser supervalorizado por sua ação no plano das invenções e das novas técnicas.(22) Na mesma linha se situa Thomas More (1478-1535), o autor de “Utopia”, outra reação do cristianismo às projeções que estava adquirindo o cada vez mais influente mercantilismo. Embora o trabalho não seja considerado como um mau, pelo contrário, apresenta características humanizadoras, é sugestivo comprovar como em Utopia a jornada do trabalho não supera as seis horas diárias e na Cidade solar não se devia trabalhar mais que quatro horas. Indubitavelmente, essas versões de sociedades ideais terminariam por impactar sobre maneira a constituição das Missões Jesuítas na América do Sul; e as Franciscanas na Baixa Califórnia. É o Renascimento, o lugar propício, além disso, para renovar o conceito da virtuosidade, agora traduzida na figura do empresário ou financista audacioso e empreendedor. Essa linha foi reforçada logo por Calvino, para quem os negócios são um bom serviço a Deus, e a riqueza não é mais que um fruto de uma vida dedicada ao trabalho desde uma perspectiva ética que analisarei com Weber mais tarde, mas que confere ao trabalho a particularidade de ser um caminho para o sucesso. Esse puritanismo impulsionou sobremaneira a versão do “homo economicus” que mais tarde, em pleno auge do capitalismo pós-industrial, ao qual, segundo Daniel Bell (1919-2011), fora substituído pelos valores hedonistas. -/- REFERENCIAL TEÓRICO AGOSTINHO. Pessoas transformam o mundo.” Paulo Freire RESUMO Este trabalho teve por objetivo abordar a Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA) como transformação social na vida daquelas pessoas que não tiveram a oportunidade de estudar ou, por motivo maior, tiveram que abandonar os estudos na idade própria. Muitos vão à procura dos estudos por motivo de conquistar um emprego melhor, outros por motivos de se sociabilizar melhor, e por vários outros motivos. Também é possível afirmar que o retorno para a escola na terceira idade é possível, e que para os jovens, os estudos abrirão as portas para o mundo do trabalho, mostrando que o indivíduo alfabetizado tem valor na sociedade, e que a escola, como um ambiente de aprendizagem, tem o poder de transformar o indivíduo e torná-lo um cidadão crítico, democrático e participativo. ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to approach the education of young people and adults (EJA) as a social transformation in the lives of people who did not have the opportunity to study or, for greater reason, had to drop out of school at their own age. Foram pesquisados os motivos que levaram essas pessoas a desistirem de estudar e porque retornaram as salas de aula muito tempo depois, destacando principalmente como cunho primordial, os alunos das turmas da EJA (Educação de Jovens e Adultos), que, em suma, pode-se concluir que o principal motivo de evasão na idade adequada era as baixas condições que eram submetidos, e por isso, abandonavam a escola para trabalhar, por isso que a maioria dos estudantes da EJA, são trabalhadores e pessoas que já carregam e possuem uma experiência de vida. Educação de jovens e adultos (EJA) é uma modalidade da qual participam aqueles que não frequentaram a escola durante a infância ou na idade ideal. Os motivos apresentados pelos quais não conseguiram estudar são, na maioria das vezes, alheios a vontade de cada um, a exemplo foi-se citado: o fato de se ter que trabalhar para sobreviver, não ter acesso a escola no local onde mora e até mesmo a evasão escolar. Por isso é comum ainda haver escolas que alfabetizam jovens e adultos. Alfabetizar jovens e adultos é uma ocupação antiga que não se limita a uma tarefa meramente escolar, está intimamente ligada a sonhos, expectativas e a anseios de mudança. E com isso, a escolha do tema deste trabalho se deu com o convívio com jovens e adultos durante o estágio supervisionado na EJA. Geralmente, é depois da adolescência que o indivíduo reconhece que necessita do conhecimento escolar e passa a buscá-lo. Pois, é muito gratificante para uma pessoa leiga poder aprender a ler e a escrever, consciente da necessidade e importância de tal ato para sua vida, um mundo novo se abre, e o indivíduo é posto num contexto “como se fosse cega e de repente abrisse os olhos e enxergasse coisas que até então não via” . Alfabetizar tais pessoas é proporcionar para elas grandes mudanças, uma nova visão de mundo, a chance de ter uma vida melhor, pelo menos com mais oportunidades. Por isso remete-se, então, para além de uma alfabetização e sim de uma transformação social destes indivíduos. A EJA é um direito assegurado pela Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional (LDBEN)2, é assegurado gratuitamente aos que não tiveram acesso a escola na idade própria e segundo a LDBEN o poder público deverá estimular o acesso e permanência do jovem e do adulto na escola. Porém, esse estímulo é a cada dia deixado de lado, como afirma o professor doutor em filosofia e educação do Instituto Federal de Pernambuco campus Belo Jardim, Dawson de Barros Monteiro. “[...] as atuais políticas públicas educacionais, mostram um exemplo de problemas, pois aqui na perspectiva contemporânea, é deveras nítida a deficiência da incentivação pública a estes indivíduos.” (Monteiro 2016, PROEJA p. 185). Abordando acerca dos objetivos, destacamos a abordagem do surgimento da EJA ante o alto índice de pessoas analfabetas no Estado, que por inúmeros motivos tiveram que abandonar os estudos por um longo período de tempo, ou para muitos, que nunca sequer tinham ido à escola. É necessário também dar luz e enaltecer a primordialidade da socialização dos que ingressam em uma escola mesmo depois da idade certa; nessa linha de raciocínio é necessário abordar e enaltecer as concepções ideológicas da transformação social no espaço da EJA, bem como compreender a importância desta para a atual sociedade. Por fim, abordar, entender e compreender as questões antropológicas dos motivos de evasão escolar; enxergar a EJA e a transformação social como utopia do indivíduo que retorna ao espaço educacional. E com isso, vislumbrar que em toda a sociedade a questão do Analfabetismo é um problema público educacional e social. 12 1. CONTRIBUIÇÕES DA TRAJETÓRIA DA EDUCAÇÃO POPULAR NO BRASIL E PROCESSOS DE ALFABETIZAÇÃO A educação de Jovens e Adultos antecede até mesmo as datas documentadas: de forma indireta, adultos interessavam-se em aprender as primeiras letras do alfabeto, sendo considerado o alicerce para a aprendizagem, ou seja, codificar cada símbolo daquele para formular palavras; ou ao menos também, interessar-se à escrever o próprio nome. Este Capítulo abordará a trajetória da Educação de Jovens e Adultos EJA, no Brasil, e sua contribuição para a população brasileira e ao mesmo tempo os processos de alfabetização que são contribuições para que esta aconteça de maneira eficaz. 1.1 HISTÓRICOS DA EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS EM SEU CONTEXTO INICIAL 1.1.1 DO BRASIL COLÔNIA AO VARGUISMO: JESUÍTAS, POMBAL, CORTE IMPERIAL E GOVERNO VARGAS Alfabetizar jovens e adultos não é um ato de ensino-aprendizagem, é a construção de uma perspectiva de mudança: no início, época da colonização do Brasil, as poucas escolas existentes era para o privilégio das classes média e a burguesia da colônia, nessas famílias os filhos possuíam acompanhamento escolar na infância; não havia a necessidade de uma alfabetização pra jovens e adultos, esse bloco etário não tinha acesso a uma instrução escolar e quando a recebiam era de forma indireta, de acordo com Ghiraldelli Jr. a educação brasileira teve seu início com o fim dos regimes das capitanias hereditárias, ele cita que: “[...] A educação escolar no período colonial, ou seja, a educação regular e mais ou menos institucional de tal época, teve três fases: a do predomínio dos jesuítas; a das reformas do Marquês de Pombal, principalmente a partir da expulsão dos jesuítas do Brasil e de Portugal em 1759; e a do período em que Dom João VI, então rei de Portugal, trouxe a corte para o Brasil (1808-1821)”. (Ghiraldelli Jr. 2008, p. 24). O ensino dos jesuítas tinha como fim não apenas a transmissão de conhecimento científico escolar, mas a propagação da fé cristã. A história da EJA no Brasil no período colonial deu-se de forma assistemática, nesta época não se constatou iniciativas governamentais significativas. Os métodos jesuíticos permaneceram até o período pombalino com a expulsão dos jesuítas, neste período, Pombal organizava as escolas de acordo com os interesses do Estado, com a chegada da coroa portuguesa na colônia, a educação perdeu o seu foco que já não era amplo. Após a proclamação da Independência do Brasil foi outorgada a primeira constituição brasileira, e no artigo 179 dela constava que a “instrução primária era gratuita para todos os cidadãos”; mesmo a instrução sendo gratuita não favorecia as classes pobres, pois estes não tinham acesso à escola, ou seja, a escola era para todos, porém inacessível a quase todos. No decorrer dos séculos houve várias reformas, Soares cita que: “[...] No Brasil, o discurso em favor da Educação popular é antigo: precedeu mesmo a proclamação da República. Já em 1882, Ruy Barbosa, baseado em exaustivo diagnóstico da realidade brasileira da época, denunciava a vergonhosa precariedade do ensino para o povo do Brasil e apresentava propostas de multiplicação de escolas e de melhoria qualitativa do ensino” (SOARES, 2002, p. 8). A constituição de 1934, no governo ditatorial de Getúlio Vargas não teve êxito, sendo assim criase uma nova constituição escrita por Francisco Campos. Para a constituição de 1937 que Ghiraldelli Jr. Cita que: “[...] A constituição de 1937, fez o Estado abrir mão da responsabilidade para com a educação publica, uma vez que ela afirmava que o Estado desempenharia um papel de subsidiário, e não central, em relação ao ensino”. O ordenamento democrático alcançado em 1934, quando a letra da lei determinou a educação como direito de todos, e obrigação dos poderes públicos, foi substituído por um texto que desobrigou o Estado de manter e expandir o ensino” (GHIRALDELLI Jr., 2008, p. 78). Nessa perspectiva, o Estado passou a não ter mais o papel de bancar os educadores para levar o conhecimento para toda a nação, num plano ideológico mundial, vemos que a educação é um princípio fundamental para o crescimento do país e deixar esta ferramenta de lado, acarreta num colapso conhecido como “grande taxa de Analfabetismo”. A constituição de 1937, foi criada no intuito de estabelecer o favorecimento do Estado pois o mesmo tira sua responsabilidade; “gera nesse contexto histórico-social uma população sem educação, ou a educação para poucos, uma sociedade frágil e suscetível a aceitar tudo que lhe é imposto pelo poder coercitivo” afirma o professor doutor em filosofia do Instituto Federal de Pernambuco campus Belo Jardim, Dawson de Barros Monteiro: logo se entende que esta constituição não tinha o interesse que o conhecimento crítico se propagasse, mas buscava favorecer o ensino profissionalizante, pois dentro do contexto histórico o Brasil precisava mais capacitar os jovens e adultos para o trabalho nas indústrias. 1.2 A EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS PÓS-VARGUISMO Segundo Cunha (1999), o fim do Estado Novo trouxe ao país um processo de redemocratização e a necessidade de aumento da quantidade de eleitores. Nesse sentido, o primeiro projeto lançado pelo governo foi uma campanha que previa a alfabetização do educando em três meses, além da conclusão do curso primário num prazo bem menor que o convencional. A educação era considerada unilateral e tinha o professor como transmissor de conhecimento. O educador, que era voluntário ou mal remunerado, seria o único sujeito deste processo. A campanha extinta em 1963, não rendeu bons resultados, mas ajudou a ideia preconceituosa de que o adulto não precisaria mais aprender a ler e que já havia encontrado seu lugar no mundo. Esse desprezo pela classe trabalhadora, o proletariado, ainda persistiu na década de 1990, quando o então ministro da Educação do governo Collor de Mello, o professor, físico e político José Goldemberg, afirmou que a tentativa de alfabetização de adultos não diminuiria o índice de analfabetos; ao contrário, perturbaria a ordem social. Com os resultados insatisfatórios dessa campanha, surgiram críticas a esse projeto: seria necessária a qualificação dos professores e a adequação do programa, do material didático e dos métodos de ensino à clientela atendida. No final dos anos 1950, Paulo Freire propunha uma nova pedagogia, posteriormente trabalhada neste trabalho. Apesar de ser encarregado de desenvolver o Programa Nacional de Alfabetização de Adultos, com o golpe militar de 1964, Paulo Freire foi exilado e um programa assistencialista e conservador foi criado: o Movimento Brasileiro de Alfabetização (Mobral). 1.3 ACERCA DO MOVIMENTO BRASILEIRO DE ALFABETIZAÇÃO (Mobral) Na época do regime militar (1964-1985), surge um movimento de alfabetização de jovens e adultos, na tentativa de erradicar o analfabetismo, pelo menos é o que se tinha em teoria; chamado MOBRAL, esse método tinha como foco o ato de ler e escrever, essa metodologia assemelha-se a de Paulo Freire com codificações, cartazes com famílias silábicas, quadros, fichas e etc., porém, não utilizava o diálogo como ideologia educacional de Freire e não se preocupava com a formação crítica dos educandos. A principal ideologia objetiva do Mobral era apenas a alfabetização funcional que em seu conceito é o ensino alicerce da compreensão de textos simples, capacitando os educandos a decodificação mínima de letras para a interpretação de textos, sem a apropriação da leitura e da escrita de pessoas entre 15 e 30 anos. A respeito do Mobral Bello cita que: “[...] O projeto Mobral permite compreender bem esta fase ditatorial por que passou o Brasil. A proposta de educação era toda baseada em aos interesses políticos vigentes na época. Por ter de repassar o sentimento de bom comportamento para o povo e justificar os atos da ditadura, esta instituição estendeu seus braços a uma boa parte das populações carentes, através de seus diversos programas.” (BELLO, 1993, p. 56). 1.3.1 METODOLOGIA DE ENSINO NO MOBRAL: UMA ABORDAGEM SUPERFICIAL A metodologia utilizada pelo Programa de Alfabetização Funcional baseava-se em seis objetivos: 1. Desenvolver nos alunos as habilidades de leitura, escrita e contagem 2. Desenvolver um vocabulário que permita o enriquecimento de seus alunos; 3. Desenvolver o raciocínio, visando facilitar a resolução de seus problemas e os de sua comunidade; 4. Formar hábitos e atitudes positivas, em relação ao trabalho; 5. Desenvolver a criatividade, a fim de melhorar as condições de vida, aproveitando os recursos disponíveis; 6. Levar os alunos: • A conhecerem seus direitos e deveres e as melhores formas de participação comunitária; • A se empenharem na conservação da saúde e melhoria das condições de higiene pessoal, familiar e da comunidade; • A se certificarem da responsabilidade de cada um, na manutenção e melhoria dos serviços públicos de sua comunidade e na conservação dos bens e instituições; • A participarem do desenvolvimento da comunidade, tendo em vista o bem-estar das pessoas. Os técnicos do MOBRAL defendiam que o método utilizado baseava-se no aproveitamento das experiências significativas dos alunos. Desta forma, embora divergisse ideologicamente do método de Paulo Freire utilizava-se, semelhantemente a este, de palavras geradoras e de uma série de procedimentos para o processo de alfabetização: 1. Apresentação e exploração do cartaz gerador; 2. Estudo da palavra geradora, depreendida do cartaz; 3. Decomposição silábica da palavra geradora; 4. Estudo das famílias silábicas, com base nas palavras geradoras; 5. Formação e estudos de palavras novas; 6. Formação e estudos de frases e textos A principal e essencial diferença na utilização destes procedimentos em relação ao método Paulo Freire era o fato de no Mobral haver uma uniformização do material utilizado em todo o território nacional, não traduzindo assim a linguagem e as necessidades do povo de cada região, principal característica da metodologia freiriana. 1.4 A EVOLUÇÃO DA EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS: DO REGIME MILITAR AO SEU CONTEXTO ATUAL Em 1974, foi implantado o CES (Centro de Estudos Supletivos), que dava a oportunidade de uma certificação rápida, mas superficial, com um ensino tecnicista e auto instrucional. Esse ensino supletivo foi implantado em acordo com a Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação, LDBE 5592/71. Nesta lei um capítulo foi dedicado especificamente a Educação de Jovens e Adultos. Em 1974 o MEC lança o CES. A década de 1980 foi marcada pelo desenvolvimento de projetos e pesquisas na área da alfabetização de adultos. Em 1985, o Mobral foi cessado, dando lugar a Fundação EDUCAR que apoiava tecnicamente e financeiramente as iniciativas de alfabetização existentes. Nos anos 80, difundiram-se várias pesquisas acerca da língua escrita que de certa forma refletiam na EJA. Com a promulgação da constituição de 1988 o Estado passou a ampliar o seu dever ante a Educação de Jovens e Adultos. De acordo com o artigo 208 da constituição brasileira de 1988: “O dever do Estado com a Educação será efetivado mediante a garantia de: I – ensino fundamental obrigatório e gratuito, assegurado inclusive sua oferta gratuita para todos os que a ele não tiveram acesso na idade própria.” A importância da Educação de Jovens e Adultos passou a ser reconhecida internacionalmente mediante as conferências organizadas pela UNESCO nos anos 1990. A partir de então, surgiu no Brasil uma mobilização nacional no sentido de diagnosticar metas e ações da EJA. A LDBE de 1996 garante igualdade de acesso e permanência na escola e ensino de qualidade, além da valorização experiência extraescolar. Ainda nos anos 1990, emergiram iniciativas em favor da EJA, onde o governo incumbiu também a municípios a engajarem-se nesta política, ocorrem parcerias com ONG’s, municípios, universidades, grupos informais, populares, fóruns estaduais e nacionais e através de fóruns a história da EJA passou a ser registrada no intitulado “Boletim da Ação Educativa”. O antigo ensino supletivo passou a se chamar Educação de Jovens e Adultos, e ganhou um sentido mais amplo: preparar e inserir ou reinserir o estudante no mercado de trabalho. Os objetivos da educação no país são revistos, cabendo agora à escola a responsabilidade de formar o adulto trabalhador. Recentemente, novas iniciativas como a EJA e o Proeja, têm surgido a fim de garantir metodologias adequadas a discentes com esse perfil. Em 2000, o Conselho Nacional de Educação estabeleceu, no parecer nº 11, (das Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais para a Educação de Jovens e Adultos), as funções e as bases legais da EJA fundamentadas na LDBE, nos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais e nas Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais O decreto nº 5478/05, institui o Programa Nacional de Integração da Educação Profissional à Educação Básica na Modalidade de Educação de Jovens e Adultos – Proeja, abrangendo a formação inicial e continuada de trabalhadores e a Educação Profissional Técnica de nível médio. Eventos onde são gerados debates e trocadas experiências, como os fóruns EJA, têm sido importantes e primordiais na estruturação da EJA e de seus objetivos. É notório que nesta fase da história da Educação brasileira, a EJA possui foco amplo. Para haver uma sociedade igualitária e uma Educação eficaz é necessário que todas as áreas da Educação sejam focadas e valorizadas, não é possível desvencilhar uma da outra. 2. REFLEXÕES ACERCA DA ALFABETIZAÇÃO A alfabetização é definida como o processo de aprendizagem onde se desenvolve a habilidade de ler e escrever de maneira adequada e a utilizar esta habilidade como um código de comunicação com o seu meio. É o processo onde os educadores procuram dar mais atenção durante o período de educação inicial escolar, através do desenvolvimento das atividades da alfabetização, que envolvem o aprendizado do alfabeto e dos números, a coordenação motora e a formação de palavras, sílabas e pequenas frases. Através destas tarefas, o indivíduo consegue adquirir a habilidade de leitura, de compreensão de textos e da linguagem de maneira geral, incluindo a operação de números, que são competências necessárias para avançar aos níveis escolares seguintes. A alfabetização consegue desenvolver também a capacidade de socialização do indivíduo, uma vez que possibilita novas trocas simbólicas com a sociedade, além de possibilitar o acesso a bens culturais e outras facilidades das instituições sociais. A incapacidade de adquirir a habilidade da leitura e da escrita é chamada de analfabetismo ou iliteracia. 2.1 ANÁLISE HISTÓRICO-ANTROPOLÓGICA ACERCA DA ESCRITA E A ALFABETIZAÇÃO A comunicação oral antecede a comunicação escrita. É oralmente que se expressam a maioria das pessoas desde os tempos mais remotos. A história nos mostra que até mesmo os povos humanos da pré-história utilizavam símbolos gráficos para fazer registros em cavernas, em grutas, em rochas e etc., ou seja, já havia a necessidade de expressão gráfica. Bajard diz que: “[...] A escrita surgiu na mesopotâmia por volta do ano 4000 a.C., entre os Sumérios. Era uma escrita representada por desenhos, figuras rupestres e etc. que indicavam ações cotidianas e corriqueiras desses povos como a caça ou a pesca; essa fase ficou conhecida como pictográfica, após ela veio a fase ideográfica, onde os símbolos já representavam também alguma ideia, tornou-se fonética, depois alfabética e a partir daí a escrita foi evoluindo-se, alfabetos foram surgindo de acordo com as particularidades de cada língua.”(BAJARD, 2001, p. 15). A fase alfabética determinou a necessidade da transformação de códigos alfabéticos escritos, dando início ao que hoje chamamos de alfabetização. Ferreiro cita que: “[...] A invenção da escrita foi um processo histórico de construção de um sistema de representação, não um processo de codificação. Uma vez construído, poder-se-ia pensar que o sistema de representação é aprendido pelos novos usuários, como um sistema de codificação. Entretanto, não é assim, no caso dos dois sistemas envolvidos no início da escolarização (o sistema de codificação seria dos números e o sistema de representação seria da linguagem). As dificuldades que as crianças enfrentam são dificuldades conceituais semelhantes as da construção do sistema, e por isso pode-se dizer em ambos os casos que a criança reinventa esses sistemas, no caso da Educação para Jovens e Adultos, esse processo também poderá acontecer mediante a participação ativa do estudante e o empenho do mestre que para ele leciona. Bem entendido, não se trata de que as crianças reinventem as letras nem os números, mas que para poderem se servir desses elementos como elementos de um sistema, deve compreender seu processo de construção e suas regras de produção, o que coloca o problema epistemológico fundamental: Qual é a natureza da relação entre o real e a sua representação?” (FERREIRO, 2001, p. 12). A alfabetização não é uma ação prioritária para a fase infantil da vida. Ferreiro cita que: “[...] é recente a tomada de consciência sobre a importância da alfabetização inicial como a única solução real para o problema da alfabetização remediativa (de adolescentes e adultos)”. (FERREIRO, 2001, p. 09). 2.2 ALFABETIZAÇÃO E PRAGMATISMO: CONCEITOS ACERCA DA LEITURA E ESCRITA NO ÂMBITO EDUCACIONAL Alfabetizar é um tema que está ligado ao ensino da leitura e da escrita de códigos alfabéticos, existem inúmeros significados para essa problemática atual. Larousse limita o significado de alfabetizar a ensinar a ler. “[...] Vários conceitos definem alfabetizar como o ato de ensinar a ler, aos poucos esses conceitos vem mudando, ainda que livros e dicionários definam-no assim. Hoje muitos educadores e alfabetizadores utilizam o termo “letramento”, letrar vai além de alfabetizar, se trata da compreensão da leitura e escrita, a criança, o jovem ou o adulto estão alfabetizados ao saberem ler e escrever e letrados ao compreenderem o que leram e escreveram, estão letrados quando dominam a leitura e a escrita e fazem o uso social de ambos.” (LAROUSSE, 2003, p. 21). Soares, acerca do assunto, cita ao ser questionada sobre tal definição: “Letramento é de certa forma o contrário de analfabetismo, aliás, houve um momento em que as palavras letramento e alfabetismo se alteravam para nomear o mesmo conceito. Ainda hoje há quem prefira a palavra letramento, eu mesmo acho a palavra alfabetismo mais vernácula que letramento, que é uma tentativa da palavra inglesa literary, mas curvo-me ao poder das tendências linguísticas, que estão dando preferência a letramento. Analfabetismo é definido como o estado de quem não sabe ler e escrever, seu contrário, alfabetismo ou letramento, é o estado de quem sabe ler e escrever, ou seja, letramento é o estado em que vive o indivíduo que não só sabe ler e escrever, mas que poderá exercer as práticas sociais de leitura e escrita que circulam na sociedade em que vivem.” (SOARES, 2007). . Os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN’s) da Língua Portuguesa (Brasil, 2001, p. 21) fala explicitamente sobre este termo, mas a sua proposta vai de encontro as propostas do letramento, isso é perceptível ao observar o que é citado nos PCN’s a respeito de pesquisas e investigações referentes a alfabetização nas séries escolares. A alfabetização é um processo contínuo, inicia-se desde os primeiros anos de vida, com a linguagem e a partir daí tudo que a pessoa aprende serve como base para uma aprendizagem eficaz. A alfabetização, como a educação em geral, é um direito de todos, infelizmente para muitos ela não pode acontecer na infância, a preocupação de como fazê-la com qualidade e êxito impulsiona investigações de como alfabetizar para compreender a leitura e a escrita. Ferreiro cita que: “[...] É difícil falar de alfabetização evitando as posturas dominantes neste campo, por um lado, o discurso oficial e, por outro, o discurso meramente ideologizante, que chamarei “discurso da denúncia”. O discurso oficial centra-se nas estatísticas, o outro despreza essas cifras tratando de desvelar “a face oculta” da alfabetização, onde o discurso oficial fala de quantidade de escolas inauguradas, o discurso da denúncia enfatiza a má qualidade dessas construções ou desses locais improvisados que carecem do indispensável para a realização de ações propriamente educativas.” (FERREIRO, 2005, p. 09). A Alfabetização de Jovens e Adultos não é uma ação recente, teve início desde a colonização apesar de ter sido reconhecida oficialmente somente após o ano de 1945, muitos motivos interferem o processo de alfabetização na infância de alguns jovens e adultos, outros nem sequer iniciam esse processo, logo nesta fase e ao longo dos anos sentem a necessidade de alfabetizar-se. Segundo Moll: “[...] Nesse sentido, quando falamos “em adultos em processo de alfabetização” no contexto social brasileiro, nos referimos a homens e mulheres marcados por experiências de infância na qual não puderam permanecer na escola pela necessidade de trabalhar, por concepções que as afastavam da escola como de que “mulher não precisa aprender” ou “saber os rudimentos da escrita já é suficiente”, ou ainda, pela seletividade construída internamente na rede escolar que produz ainda hoje itinerários descontínuos de aprendizagens formais. Referimo-nos a homens e mulheres que viveram e vivem situações limite nas quais os tempos de infância foi, via de regra, tempo de trabalho e de sustento das famílias.” (MOLL, 2004, p. 11). Ler e escrever são uma arte, principalmente para muitos que não aprenderam a ler e escrever na infância e consequentemente na vida adulta sentem falta desses atos, nas últimas décadas a oferta de ensino aumentou bastante, porém o acesso ainda é limitado para muitos, nem todos os brasileiros tiveram ou tem a oportunidade de alfabetizar-se na infância diversos fatores contribuem ou contribuíram para isso, como a necessidade de trabalhar nessa fase da vida, a falta de acesso a escola, ou até mesmo a falta de interesse, ao chegar na juventude ou na fase adulta a pessoa percebe o quanto a educação básica lhe faz falta e começa a persistir em busca do conhecimento. No decorrer da história da educação a alfabetização de jovens e adultos teve diferentes focos e contou com significantes projetos de alfabetização como o MOBRAL e Método Paulo Freire que será visto neste trabalho. O processo de aquisição da leitura e da escrita não é uma preocupação apenas de professores e alfabetizadores, a alfabetização é a base para uma educação eficaz, portanto para o aluno estar bem nas séries posteriores ele precisa de uma alfabetização sólida. Vivemos atualmente na sociedade do conhecimento, não só do conhecimento do senso comum como sempre foi, mas do conhecimento científico que facilita aos indivíduos uma vivência social de acordo com as imposições do meio e para tal o conhecimento transferido no ambiente escolar é fundamental. Atualmente a EJA tem objetivos maiores além da alfabetização por parte dos alunos, da necessidade de estar capacitado para o mercado de trabalho, ser atuante na sociedade e também o interesse político de reduzir o máximo a estatística de analfabetismo no país, este fator favorecerá com a pretensão de um dia o Brasil se tornar uma grande potência mundial. As primeiras formas de alcançar melhores condições de trabalho e ampliar conhecimento é que faz com que muitos jovens e adultos que não se alfabetizaram na infância ingressem em uma turma de EJA oferecida pelas escolas ou por grupos comunitários que desenvolvem projetos de alfabetização, ser alfabetizado nestas fases da vida depende de muita motivação e força de vontade, não basta apenas querer, a alfabetização de jovens e adultos ocorre de maneira intencional e consciente, segundo Pinto: “Os conceitos de “necessitar saber” vem da origem do interior do ser, considerado em sua plena realidade, enquanto o de “saber” e “não saber” (como fatos empíricos) coloca-se na superfície do ser humano, é um acidente social, além de ser impossível definir com rigor absoluto os limites entre o “saber e o não saber” (daí que não há uma fronteira exata entre o alfabetizado e o analfabeto). Porque o “necessitar” é uma coisa que ou é satisfeita (se é exigência interior) ou, se não é, não permite ao indivíduo subsistir como tal entre (por exemplo: as necessidades biológicas). O “necessitar” ao qual se referem a leitura e a escrita é de caráter social (uma vez que tem por fundamento o trabalho).” (PINTO, 2007, p. 92). É válido ressaltar que o direito a educação de Jovens e Adultos é assegurado por lei e as instituições de ensino devem realizá-la de maneira que atenda tal clientela sem ignorar suas limitações. Alfabetizar jovens e adultos é muito mais que transferir-lhes noções de leitura e escrita, o jovem ou adulto ao ingressar em uma escola ele tem um objetivo delimitado e compreende a escola como um meio para alcançar tal objetivo, o professor alfabetizador se torna então um mediador entre o aluno e o conhecimento, por isso ele precisa estar bem informado, motivado e querendo realizar um trabalho de construção. Há algumas décadas era comum grupos de pessoas adultas se reunirem para aprender escrever o nome e conhecer as letras do alfabeto, tais pessoas ficavam extremamente maravilhadas, pois dentro do contexto delas tal aprendizado era suficientemente satisfatório. Atualmente grupos ainda se reúnem, mas as expectativas são outras, só o aprendizado do próprio nome não é suficiente, o mercado de trabalho exige mais, até mesmo o simples fato de precisar identificar o itinerário do ônibus requer leitura. Segundo Libâneo: “A escola de hoje precisa não apenas conviver com outras modalidades de educação não formal, informal e profissional, mas também articular-se e integrar-se a elas, a fim de formar cidadãos mais preparados e qualificados para um novo tempo”. (LIBÂNEO, 2003, p. 53). Para isso o ensino escolar deve contribuir para: • Formar indivíduos capazes de pensar e de aprender permanentemente; • Prover formação global para atender à necessidade de maior e melhor qualificação profissional; • Desenvolver conhecimentos, capacidades e qualidades para o exercício consciente da cidadania; • Formar cidadãos éticos e solidários. A motivação é a chave para o sucesso da educação de jovens e adultos, desmotivados eles não conseguirão enfrentar as barreiras cotidianas, tudo se tornará mais difícil, cabe aos professores e a escola em geral incentivá-los para que não desistam. 2.3 O ANALFABETISMO COMO ANTAGONIA AO ALFABETISMO O analfabetismo é a qualidade de analfabeto, uma palavra de origem latina (analphabētus) que se refere àquelas pessoas que não sabem ler nem escrever. Porém, o termo costuma ter um uso mais extenso e é usado para fazer alusão aos indivíduos que são ignorantes ou que carecem de instrução elementar em alguma disciplina. O analfabetismo surge perante a falta de aprendizagem. Por isso, nos países que contam com programas de escolarização obrigatória, o analfabetismo é minoritário, mesmo para além do facto de que a compreensão de leitura das pessoas possa ser deficiente. Analfabeto é a pessoa que não sabe ler nem escrever. Segundo definição da UNESCO, “uma pessoa funcionalmente analfabeta é aquela que não pode participar de todas as atividades nas quais a alfabetização é requerida para uma atuação eficaz em seu grupo e comunidade, e que lhe permitem, também, continuar usando a leitura, a escrita e o cálculo a serviço do seu próprio desenvolvimento e do desenvolvimento de sua comunidade”. O analfabetismo no país ainda continua sendo um obstáculo para o progresso e desenvolvimento da humanidade. O importante é ressaltar que não estamos falando de ignorância. Analfabeto Funcional: sabe ler e escrever textos e frases curtas, mas não consegue interpretá-los, também não sabem realizar operações de matemática. Existem três níveis de Analfabetismo funcional: Existem três níveis distintos de alfabetização funcional, a saber: • Nível 1 - também conhecido como alfabetização rudimentar, compreende aqueles que apenas conseguem ler e compreender títulos de textos e frases curtas; e apesar de saber contar, têm dificuldades com a compreensão de números grandes e em fazer as operações aritméticas básicas; • Nível 2 - também conhecido como alfabetização básica, compreende aqueles que conseguem ler textos curtos, mas só conseguem extrair informações espessas no texto e não conseguem tirar uma conclusão a respeito do mesmo; e também conseguem entender números grandes, conseguem realizar as operações aritméticas básicas, entretanto sentem dificuldades quando é exigida uma maior quantidade de cálculos, ou em operações matemáticas mais complexas. • Nível 3 - também conhecido como alfabetização plena, compreende aqueles que detêm pleno domínio da leitura, escrita, dos números e das operações matemáticas (das mais básicas às mais complexas). Pode-se afirmar que, nos dias de hoje, a sociedade está experimentando uma nova forma de analfabetismo, chamado de analfabetismo digital. Este tipo de carência está relacionado com a falta de conhecimento necessário para utilizar computadores pessoais, celulares e agendas eletrônicas e dominar os sistemas que operam estas máquinas como, por exemplo, navegar na rede mundial de computadores. O grave problema do analfabetismo no mundo continua sendo um dos grandes temas prioritários a solucionar desde que se realizou a Conferência Mundial da Educação para Todos, ocorrida em 1990, em Jomtiem, Tailândia. Esta conferência foi assistida por representantes do mundo todo e chegou-se à conclusão de que a alfabetização é um dos fatores chave para resolver um dos problemas mais urgentes da sociedade, que a realização plena do ser humano só se dá através da educação e promovê-la é fundamental para o desenvolvimento das nações. Assim sendo, a educação é uma ferramenta extremamente útil para combater a pobreza e a desigualdade, elevar os níveis de saúde e bem estar social, criar as bases para um desenvolvimento econômico sustentável e a manutenção de uma democracia duradoura. Por este motivo a educação foi incluída na lista dos oito Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio das Nações Unidas, que fixou para o ano de 2015 a data limite para alcançar 100% de educação primária para todas as crianças do planeta. Para o plano ideológico da história da Educação de Jovens e Adultos, pode-se afirmar que tais medidas, no Estado brasileiro, refletiram na queda da taxa de analfabetismo ao longo dos anos. Segundo o professor doutor em filosofia do Instituto Federal de Pernambuco campus Belo Jardim, Dawson de Barros Monteiro, o modelo teórico das iniciativas de alfabetização de jovens e adultos, mesmo tendo um cunho mais político no processo, este pôde remeter-se na queda do índice de habitantes analfabetos no Brasil, desde o Estado Novo ao governo Lula, esta ideologia teórica levou à pratica, uma nova visão de Brasil, uma perspectiva de habitantes mais preocupados com sua educação, ao menos ter o alicerce de poder gozar pelo menos do próprio saber a ler e a escrever, mesmo em um plano inicial. Mostra-se aí que as políticas educacionais mesmo sem o principal intuito de alfabetizar a população geraram programas que foram fomentados e mastigados pela população, que estes puderam ao menos voltar às salas de aula, a quem desistira quando jovem; ou mesmo entrar no âmbito educacional e conhecer de perto o ensino e a escola para aqueles que não puderam nem entrar nesta. A seguir o gráfico mostra como o índice de analfabetos decaiu a partir dos programas para a erradicação do analfabetismo primordialmente com a Educação de Jovens e Adultos. Figura 1. Gráfico com a queda da taxa de analfabetismo no Brasil no período de 1940 e 2010 É observado que a partir dos anos 1940, no governo Getúlio Vargas e o Estado Novo, o índice era de que em cada 100 pessoas quase 56 encontravam-se vítimas do analfabetismo no Brasil, número que ao passar dos anos vai declinando, chegando em 2010 com um índice em torno que, em cada 100 pessoas quase 10 encontravam-se analfabetas, isso é uma conquista tanto para o Estado que cresce no plano internacional, para a educação nacional que remete a ideia que os programas funcionam de forma ótima, e para o estudante que ingressa em uma sala da EJA. O próximo gráfico traz o índice por regiões brasileiras entre um plano de uma década, 2000 a 2010. Trazendo luz a queda no índice da taxa percentual. Figura 2. Gráfico com a taxa de analfabetismo por regiões do Brasil entre 2000 e 2010 Por fim, concluísse que com os programas educacionais de Educação de Jovens e Adultos, pôsse à erradicação e diminuição brusca do índice de percentual de analfabetos no país, uma vez que esses tendem ao cunho da erradicação dessas taxas que fazem com que a perspectiva do Brasil seja favorável ou desfavorável no plano internacional, já que a educação na contemporaneidade é fundamental para o crescimento do país. 3. REFEXÕES TEÓRICAS SOBRE A EDUCAÇÃO DE JOVENS E ADULTOS Ao abordar a Educação de Jovens e Adultos como tema é fundamental conhecer e destacar o pensamento de alguns autores e educadores como Paulo Freire e outros que ao longo da vida profissional dedicaram-se a alfabetizar e que contribuem para a formação docente continuada. Este capítulo aborda tais reflexões e as particularidades do tema. 3.1 PENSAMENTO DE PAULO FREIRE SOBRE A EDUCAÇÃO POPULAR Educação popular é uma educação comprometida e participativa orientada pela perspectiva de realização de todos os direitos do povo. Quando se pensa em educação popular nos remetemos à imagem de Paulo Freire que foi o grande mentor, é uma educação que visa à formação do indivíduo com valores, conhecimento e consciência de cidadania, busca utilizar o que a pessoa já tem de conhecimento popular para transformar na matéria-prima do ensino. Esta educação popular é muito utilizada em assentamentos rurais, favelas, aldeias indígenas, pequenas comunidades, ONG’s dentre outras; por se tratar de uma educação que atende as necessidades em comum de um povo, uma educação em que tem os mesmos interesses em ampliar os seus conhecimentos e tornar cidadãos conscientes do seu papel na sociedade. Paulo Freire, o mais célebre educador brasileiro, tinha o pensamento de que a escola tinha que ensinar o aluno a “ler o mundo” para obter transformações, tendo em vista que se o aluno não saber a realidade do mundo em que vive não é possível lutar em busca de melhorias; para que haja transformação é essencial a conscientização, por isso Paulo Freire criou o seu método de ensino, pois não acreditava que uma pessoa adulta dor nordeste por exemplo que não conhecia “uva” pudesse aprender a ler e escrever apenas utilizando cartilhas com frases: EVA VIU UVA, pensou em aproximar os alunos a sua própria realidade, à sua rotina do dia a dia com as palavras geradoras. De acordo com a revista Nova Escola “Grandes Pensadores”: Freire dizia que ninguém ensina nada a ninguém, mas as pessoas também não aprendem sozinhas, os homens se educam entre si mediados pelo mundo. O pensamento de Paulo Freire é que o professor não é detentor do conhecimento e que não domina todas as áreas do conhecimento e é de fundamental importância a troca de experiências entre professor e aluno, o conhecimento de um completa o outro, todos nós somos dotados de inteligências e exercemos inteligências, porém nem todos a desenvolvem para a mesma área, muitas vezes um professor é excelente na sua profissão e não tem habilidades como pedreiro e o pedreiro constrói lindas casas e edifícios, mas não é alfabetizado e quando esse professor encontra este pedreiro podem trocar experiências distintas e ambos aprendem entre si. Para Freire um professor dedicado para a educação popular tem que acreditar em mudanças, não pode ensinar apenas a ler e escrever, é preciso haver uma mudança de paradigma, e transmitir esperanças, fazer com que o aluno se transforme em sujeito pensante, crítico e consciente do que lhe envolve no dia a dia, o professor tem que ter prazer, alegria e transmitir aos alunos. Paulo Freire diz que: “Há uma relação entre a alegria necessária à atividade educativa e a esperança. A esperança de que professor e alunos juntos podemos aprender, ensinar, inquietar-nos, produzir e juntos igualmente resistir aos obstáculos à nossa alegria. Na verdade, do ponto de vista da natureza humana a esperança não é algo que a ela se justaponha. A esperança faz parte da natureza humana.” (FREIRE, 2002, p. 80). Para Freire é importante que o professor tenha esperança, uma vez que os jovens e adultos se espelham nos professores, e com esperança pode se acreditar em uma mudança de direção para a vida e para o mundo, para a sociedade, cita uma história popular que um passarinho viu um incêndio na floresta e correu para chamar os amigos para apagar o fogo, mas ninguém quis ir, então resolveu ir sozinho apagar o fogo, viu um rio e foi pegando água e jogando no fogo, certamente esse pássaro sabia que sozinho não poderia apagar toso o fogo, mas teve esperança que tomando a iniciativa talvez os outros pudessem acreditar que também seria capaz. Podemos comparar Paulo Freire a este passarinho, pois ele apenas deu início a essa educação e a cada dia pessoas se juntam a suas ideologias a fim de transformar a educação no nosso país e começam a mudar este paradigma. 3.2 ACERCA DO MÉTODO FREIRIANO O Método Paulo Freire consiste numa proposta para a alfabetização de adultos desenvolvidos pelo educador Paulo Freire, que em sua implementação concorreu com programas como o de Frank Laubach. Freire afirmou ter desenvolvido o método enquanto era diretor do Departamento de Extensões Culturais da Universidade do Recife, quando formou um grupo para testar o método na cidade de Angicos, no Rio Grande do Norte. 3.2.1 ETAPAS DO MÉTODO 1. Etapa de investigação: busca conjunta entre professor e aluno das palavras e temas mais significativos da vida do aluno, dentro de seu universo vocabular e da comunidade onde ele vive. 2. Etapa de tematização: momento da tomada de consciência do mundo, através da análise dos significados sociais dos temas e palavras. 3. Etapa de problematização: etapa em que o professor desafia e inspira o aluno a superar a visão mágica e acrítica do mundo, para uma postura conscientizada. 3.2.2 O MÉTODO • As palavras geradoras: o processo proposto por Paulo Freire inicia-se pelo levantamento do universo vocabular dos alunos. Através de conversas informais, o educador observa os vocábulos mais usados pelos alunos e a comunidade e, assim, seleciona as palavras que servirão de base para as lições. A quantidade de palavras geradoras pode variar entre 18 a 23 palavras, aproximadamente. Depois de composto o universo das palavras geradoras, elas são apresentadas em cartazes com imagens. Então, nos círculos de cultura, inicia-se uma discussão para dar-lhes significado dentro da realidade daquela turma. • A silabação: uma vez identificadas, cada palavra geradora passa a ser estudada através da divisão silábica, semelhantemente ao método tradicional. Cada sílaba se desdobra em sua respectiva família silábica, com a mudança da vogal. Por exemplo: BA-BE-BI-BO-BU. • As palavras novas: o passo seguinte é a formação de palavras novas. Usando as famílias silábicas agora conhecidas, o grupo forma palavras novas. • A conscientização: um ponto fundamental do método é a discussão sobre os diversos temas surgidos a partir das palavras geradoras. Para Paulo Freire, alfabetizar não pode se restringir aos processos de codificação e decodificação. Dessa forma, o objetivo da alfabetização de adultos é promover a conscientização acerca dos problemas cotidianos, a compreensão do mundo e o conhecimento da realidade social. 3.2.3 AS FASES DE APLICAÇÃO DO MÉTODO Freire propõe a aplicação de seu método nas cinco fases seguintes: • 1ª fase: levantamento do universo vocabular do grupo. Nessa fase, ocorrem as interações de aproximação e conhecimento mútuo, bem como a anotação das palavras da linguagem dos membros do grupo, respeitando seu linguajar típico. • 2ª fase: escolha das palavras selecionadas, seguindo os critérios de riqueza fonética, dificuldades fonéticas - numa sequência gradativa das mais simples para as mais complexas, do comprometimento pragmático da palavra na realidade social, cultural, política do grupo e/ou sua comunidade. • 3ª fase: criação de situações existenciais características do grupo. Trata-se de situações inseridas na realidade local, que devem ser discutidas com o intuito de abrir perspectivas para a análise crítica consciente de problemas locais, regionais e nacionais. • 4ª fase: criação das fichas-roteiro neles havia indicações de possíveis subtemas ligadas as palavras geradoras e sugestões de encaminhamentos para análise dos temas selecionados que funcionam como roteiro para os debates, as quais fossem apenas sugestões esses roteiros eram de grande valia, principalmente no inicio do trabalho quando a alfabetizador era também iniciante. • 5ª fase: criação de fichas de palavras para a decomposição das famílias fonéticas correspondentes às palavras geradoras. 3.2.4 HISTÓRIA Freire aplicou publicamente seu método pela primeira vez no Centro de Cultura Dona Olegarinha, um círculo de cultura do Movimento de Cultura Popular no Recife. Foi aplicado inicialmente a cinco alunos, dos quais três aprenderam a ler e escrever em 30 horas e outros dois desistiram antes de concluir. Baseado na experiência de Angicos, em janeiro de 1963, onde em 45 dias, alfabetizaram-se 300 trabalhadores, João Goulart, presidente do Brasil na época, chamou Paulo Freire para organizar o Plano Nacional de Alfabetização. Este plano, iniciado em janeiro de 1964, tinha como objetivo alfabetizar 2 milhões de pessoas em 20 000 círculos de cultura, e já contava com a participação da comunidade - só no estado da Guanabara, se inscreveram 6 000 pessoas. Mas, com o Golpe de Estado no Brasil em 1964, em abril, toda essa mobilização social foi reprimida e Paulo Freire foi considerado subversivo, sendo preso e, depois, exilado. Assim, esse projeto foi abortado. Em seu lugar, surgiu o Movimento Brasileiro de Alfabetização, igualmente uma iniciativa para a alfabetização, porém distinta do método freiriano. 3.3 O PERFIL DO PROFESSOR ALFABETIZADOR Alfabetizar jovens e adultos é uma ação peculiar e nem sempre se dá da mesma forma com se alfabetiza uma criança na infância o professor alfabetizador deve partir dor princípios de açãoreflexão-ação e deve estar aliado à formação continuada. A formação continuada permite refletir suas ações e repensar a sua prática, elaborando planos e/ou projetos que possam aprimorar a sua prática educativa. Alfabetizar na EJA envolve também a afetividade, o gosto e a responsabilidade. É fundamental que o professor da EJA tenha a consciência da valorização do outro, é importante valorizar o conhecimento que este aluno possui, pois durante toda a vida o aluno adquire um vasto conhecimento do senso comum e valorize também as suas experiências de vida, entretanto o diálogo tem que estar presente nas aulas, o professor tem que usar uma linguagem simples e acessível. O professor é um incentivador um meio para alcançar a motivação dos alunos e nesta fase da vida motivação é um aspecto fundamental. A prática da ação-reflexão-ação permite ao professor lançar estratégias para o sucesso do processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Ao observar turmas da EJA é comum observar que os professores regentes em tais turmas são geralmente professores experientes que despertam a confiança em seus alunos e que acreditam na educação como foco de mudança. Segundo Leal: “O conhecimento na ação, ou o conhecimento tácito, seria aquele constituído na prática cotidiana do exercício profissional. Concebemos que esse é um saber que se constrói com base nos conhecimentos prévios de formação inicial, articulado com os saberes gerados na prática cotidiana, de forma assistemática e muitas vezes sem tomada de consciência acerca dos modos de construção. Para um projeto de formação numa base reflexiva, torna-se fundamental conhecer e valorizar esses conhecimentos que são constituídos pelos professores, seja através de uma reflexão teórica, seja através desses processos eminentemente assistemáticos.” (LEAL, 2005, p. 114). A aprendizagem não pode ser simplesmente transmitida, ela é um processo de construção onde professora busca oferecer meios que favoreçam tal construção, a do conhecimento: tudo o que já foi vivido pelo aluno serve como base, o professor deve utilizar também a vivência e o conhecimento prévio do aluno para ajudá-lo na construção do saber. Aquilo que é oferecido ao alfabetizando deve fazer sentido para ele, se o professor partir de um ponto desconhecido que foge à realidade do aluno ele poderá não alcançar a compreensão necessária ao letramento. A principal função do professor na EJA é mediar, interagir o aluno com o meio, usar metodologias que favoreçam o processo de construção de ensino-aprendizagem, o aluno da atualidade espera muito mais que aprender a assinar o nome, portanto exercício de mera memorização, atividades mecânicas não permitem o êxito na EJA. A interdisciplinaridade deve fazer parte também desse processo os temas transversais como, ética, valores e cidadania são temas que norteiam a construção do conhecimento nesta fase. A educação de Jovens e Adultos traz muitos desafios tanto para professores quanto para alunos e são esses desafios que constroem práticas eficazes de alfabetização. Kelly Camargo Pulice in Moll esclarece muito bem o papel do educador na EJA, ao citar: “O papel do educador é pensar formas de intervir e transformar a realidade, problematizando-a, dialogando com o educando. Em sala de aula o importante não é “depositar” conteúdos, mas despertar uma nova forma de relação com a experiência vivida. Portanto, antes de qualquer coisa, é preciso conhecer o aluno: conhecê-lo como indivíduo num contexto social, com seus problemas, seus medos, suas necessidades, valorizando seu saber, sua cultura, sua oralidade, seus desejos, seus sonhos, isto possibilita uma aprendizagem integradora, abrangente, não compartimentalizada, não fragmentada.” (MOLL, 2004, p. 11). 3.4 PERFIL DO ESTUDANTE DA EJA E OS MOTIVOS DE EVASÃO Os alunos da EJA são geralmente pessoas vindas de famílias de baixa renda, sendo que muitas vezes os pais também não são alfabetizados, isso faz com que muitas vezes se sentem discriminados pela sociedade; vivemos em uma sociedade que para toda a nossa rotina é necessário a leitura,para se tomar um ônibus é necessário conseguir identificá-lo, para fazer compras tem que conhecer os números, contudo esse aluno da EJA pode se sentir excluído da sociedade, quando pensamos em exclusão nos remetemos a pessoas com deficiência, mas a exclusão não se limita a deficiência intelectuais e mentais, para esses alunos que por alguns motivos não estudaram nos primeiros anos de vida este termo também cabe. O autor Bieler fala sobre a importância da inclusão. “[...] A perspectiva da educação inclusiva vai além da deficiência. Esta é apenas uma das áreas que seriam beneficiadas com ela (educação inclusiva) A qualidade da educação é que está em debate porque hoje não se considera (nos sistemas educacionais ) a diversidade dos alunos, os níveis de necessidade e as características individuais. A proposta da educação inclusiva melhoraria a qualidade do ensino para todos. Não se trata só de incluir deficientes nas sala de aula.” (BIELER, 2004, p. 11). O aluno da EJA possui necessidade educacional especial independente de ter ou não deficiência física. Uma vez que estes alunos vão para a escola após um longo dia de serviço, sua mente já está cansada, ao contrario de uma criança que não trabalha e nem tem preocupações com a família, como os adultos. A maioria destes alunos da EJA tem a necessidade de voltar a escola para se sentir incluído na sociedade, procuram melhores condições de vida , almeja um melhor cargo no trabalho, muitos buscam a leitura com o objetivo de ser mais participativos e críticos na sociedade e até por motivos religiosos como o sonho de aprender ler para conseguir ler a bíblia, entretanto boa parte destes alunos busca uma realização pessoal, principalmente os mais idosos que as vezes são motivos de chacotas por estarem estudando nesta fase da vida. Os alunos da EJA por se tratarem de adolescentes acima de 14 anos e adultos, já tem suas experiências de vida, muitas vezes até traumas podem ter sido criados por não ter conseguido estudar anteriormente por vários motivos, desta forma os alunos criam um bloqueio, por isto o professor deve estar seguro para tentar quebrar estes bloqueios. Às vezes estes alunos podem estar com sua autoestima muito baixa, aí entra o papel do professor para traçar práticas adequadas para incentivá-los a motivação. A autoestima é fundamental para este processo de alfabetização, pois quando há esperanças se tem forças para vencer os desafios na busca de um objetivo. As turmas da EJA funcionam geralmente a noite que é o horário disponível para pessoas que trabalham diariamente, deve haver muita força de vontade e incentivo para jovens e adultos concluírem o curso. O número de evasão na EJA é muito grande, os alunos se sentem desmotivados e cansados; a grande maioria trabalha o dia inteiro, pegam ônibus lotado, muitas mulheres não trabalham fora, porém trabalham em casa. É fundamental que os professores da EJA sejam dinâmicos, aproximem o conteúdo à realidade do aluno, procurem sempre inovar e não criem barreiras para afastar esses alunos. O professor da EJA tem que estar motivado para conseguir motivar os alunos, todavia que os alunos são reflexos dos professores. Quando se pensa em evasão na EJA é de suma importância conhecer o perfil destes alunos, para tentar entender por que se dá esta evasão. As causas evasão na EJA são muitas, podemos destacar o cansaço após um dia de serviço, a distância entre casa/escola que aumenta as possibilidades de assaltos, entre outros fatores que se dá por conta da violência urbana. Outro fator é o apoio da família que nem sempre existe, o apoio do governo, da escola, direção, professores muitas vezes não estimulam os alunos; e também o desinteresse interfere sobre esta questão. É notório que existem fatores que contribuem direta ou indiretamente na evasão escolar, isso é uma preocupação de muitos, tais como escola, gestão escolar, governo, entre outras instituições. O fracasso escolar também é uma das causas de evasão, na Proposta Curricular para o 1º segmento do ensino fundamental (1997) consta que: “No público que efetivamente frequenta os programas de educação de jovens e adultos, é cada vez mais reduzido o número daqueles que não tiveram nenhuma passagem anterior pela escola. É também cada vez mais dominante a presença de adolescentes e jovens recém saídos do ensino regular, por onde tiveram passagens acidentadas.” É fundamental que aluno e professor compreendam que erros podem ser transformados em aprendizagem, é possível aprender com eles, os erros não podem ser contribuintes para causar evasão. De acordo com Cortella (1999, p. 112): “[...] O erro não ocupa um lugar externo ao processo de conhecer, investigar é bem diferente de receber uma revelação límpida, transparente e perfeita. O erro é parte integrante do conhecer não porque “errar é humano”, mas porque nosso conhecimento sobre o mundo dá-se em uma relação viva e cambiante (sem o. (shrink)

Die Aufgabe der Philosophie besteht nicht darin, den moralischen Zeigefinger zu erheben und vorzugeben, was man tun soll und was nicht. Vielmehr zeigt die Philosophie unterschiedliche Argumente auf, weshalb die eine oder andere Haltung vertretbar oder aus gewissen Gründen gegebenenfalls vertretbarer ist als eine andere. Insofern eine Gesellschaft an Klugheit interessiert ist und sich einer zukünftigen Entwicklung verantwortungsvoll stellt, kann die Philosophie eine wertvolle Aufgabe übernehmen: Die Methode, analytisch das Für und Wider abzuwiegen, bedeutet nicht zuletzt viel Arbeit und Aufmerksamkeit (...) für das Detail. Wie beispielsweise das Kapitel zur Grünen Gentechnik (Seite 6) zeigt, sind die Diskussionen um die zu fällenden moralischen Urteile nicht an ein externes Gremium zu delegieren. Im Gegenteil: Die Diskussion sollte innerhalb der Gesellschaft stattfinden, einerseits um den unterschiedlichen Haltungen Platz zu geben, andererseits aber, weil nur auf diese Weise ein echter Konsens zu Stande kommen kann. Die Rolle der Philosophie zeigt sich ähnlich auch, wenn es um die für die pluralistische Gesellschaft zentrale Toleranz geht. Die wertenden Einstellungen der Bürgerinnen und Bürger verdienen es, ernst genommen zu werden und offen diskutiert zu werden. Nur durch eine tiefgreifende Auseinandersetzung lässt sich verhindern, dass populistische Wortführer mit eigennützigen, aber aufmerksamkeitsstarken Argumenten von den Themen ablenken, die ernsthaft angegangen werden möchten: Die Vision einer friedlichen und freiheitlichen Gesellschaft, das demokratische Ideal, wird nicht mit dem Verweis auf die „Krise“ aufgegeben. Verantwortung interessiert die Bürgerinnen und Bürger schliesslich eben doch mehr, als Donald Trumps neuste Lüge. Das philosophische Themendossier zeigt, dass die akademische Philosophie viel leis-tet, um eine oberflächliche Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlich und zukunftsrelevanten Themen zu verhindern. Auch wenn das auf den ersten Blick nach viel Anstrengung klingt, so zeigt der zweite Blick, dass darin viel Wohlwollen zugunsten der Gesellschaft steckt. Es lohnt sich, den Mut aufzubringen, sich intensiv mit den eigenen Werturteilen auseinanderzusetzen und das Auge vom eigenen Wohl auch auf das Wohle aller schweifen zu lassen. Philosophie kann „ansteckend“ sein und viel Freude hervorrufen: Gerade dann, wenn man neue Ideen mit dazu gewinnt oder andere Argumente für bereits gefasste Entscheidungen kennenlernt. Die Philosophie entwickelt sich fortlaufend weiter und bleibt somit mehr denn je: stets aktuell. (shrink)

In Brazil, the social demand for veterinary expertise is growing. However, there is still a shortage of professionals trained in this area to apply specific knowledge to each case. Studies and research into forensic veterinary medicine are necessary for veterinary experts to assist in investigations and legal proceedings. Veterinary medicine has subjects on its curriculum that cover the knowledge needed to apply in the fields of animal health, public health and the environment. The interaction between human and veterinary medicine, as (...) well as other areas of health, is of great importance in the prevention and control of various diseases, both in animals and humans. Some cases of infectious bovine abortion have a major impact not only on cattle farming and animal health, but also on public and environmental health. The concept of "One Health" integrates human medicine and health professionals. In this context, knowledge of infectious abortive diseases that affect animal, human and environmental health is fundamental. Cattle are affected by specific infectious abortive diseases, caused by pathogens with different forms of presentation and transmission mechanisms. These include brucellosis, leptospirosis and listeriosis, which are potentially zoonotic diseases. Controlling these diseases can contribute to effective public health actions and reduce global health risks. In order to establish the diagnosis of these diseases, it is essential to properly collect specimens from live or dead animals under biosafety and biosecurity conditions, following the chain of custody for each case. These procedures allow for greater success in diagnosing the suspected agent and facilitate the investigation of other causes. Animal health standards for the prophylaxis and control of these diseases are established by specific legislation, including those of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MALS). This literature review was based on current knowledge on the Pubmed platform, Google Scholar, articles and textbooks. The dominant way to define physical entities is by appeal to ideal physics (as opposed to current physics). However, it has been worried that physicalism understood in terms of ideal physics would be too liberal to rule out “psychism”, the view that mentality exists at the fundamental metaphysical level. In this article, I argue that whereas physicalism is incompatible with some psychist cases, such as the case of “phenomenalism” in which ideal physics adopts mental concepts to denote fundamental entities, physicalism (...) should accommodate a certain type of psychist case in which fundamental mental entities are denoted by non-mental concepts in ideal physics. In so doing, I propose a distinctive account of physical entities, which asserts that physical entities are entities denoted by non-mental natural concepts in ideal physics. Prace te w dużym zakresie zmieniły zasady oddzielania teorii od praktyki budowlanej, w tym tak- że odgraniczania architektury od (...) literatury czy filozofii. Już Micromegas były polemiką z traktowaniem rysunku architektonicznego wyłącznie jako utylitarnego narzędzia w procesie stwarzania budowli i postawiły na uczynienie z tej techniki pełnoprawnej postaci realnej architektury. Chamber Works w jeszcze większym stopniu niż prace z serii Micromegas akcentowały samodzielność rysunku i jego odrębność od wszelkiej rzeczywistości czy zewnętrznych źródeł treści. Maszyny połączone w Three Lessons in Architecture streszczały dokonania dawnych epok historii sztuki budowania. Reading Machine opowiadała o rzemieślniczych początkach, Memory Machine o intelektualizmie okresu nowożytnego, Writing Machine zaś o współczesnym okresie mechanizacji pamięci i kreacji. Zadaniem maszyn była metafizyczna refleksja nad głównymi założeniami i mitami architektury, a zarazem przeniesienie tej refleksji na poziom doświadczenia zmysłowego. W berlińskim Jüdisches Museum wymyślone liternictwo architektoniczne połączyło się z narracją na temat zagłady żydowskich mieszkańców miasta. This book examines some possible ethical principles to resolve moral dilemmas involving water. Existing problems in current water management practices are discussed in light of these principles. Transformation of human water ethics has the potential to be far more effective, cheaper and acceptable than some existing means of “regulation”, but transformation of personal and societal ethics need time because the changes to ethical values are slow.

Tschumi believes that the quality of architecture depends on the theoretical factor it contains. Such a view led to the creation of architecture that would achieve visibility and comprehensibility only after its interpretation. On his way to creating such an architecture he took on a purely philosophical reflection on the basic building block of architecture, which is space. In 1975, he wrote an essay entitled Questions of Space, in which he included several dozen questions about the nature of space. The (...) questions he formulated could be regarded as analogous to the situation in the philosophy of the time, in which the interest in questioning the most obvious forms of understanding the world and intellectual categories increased. The research on space is an area common to many fields of natural sciences, humanities and artistic creation, but it also deals with other problems, such as issues of experience. The concept of space-time continuum proposed by Hermann Minkowski drew attention to the identity of time and space with the events taking place. Probably regardless of the postulates of physicists commenting on Einstein’s discoveries, also in philosophy it increased the importance of the concept of the event which became dominant in Heidegger’s latest work Contributions of Philosophy. Of the event. Furthermore, Tschumi’s reflections on space entered into relation with the problem of experience, which aroused the interest of a group of French philosophers trying to assimilate Georges Bataille’s concept of “inner experience”. Both Tschumi and Derrida referred to Bataille because his views could be used not only to modify the concept of the subject, but also to change the understanding of what constitutes the area of architecture. The discussion on experience has led to the recognition that the subject is not sovereign, but actually a form of what is on their outside. Such insights make it possible to treat the area of the Parc de La Villette as existing mainly when it is organised by its users. The decisive features of the Park are its assumptions, according to which it is a variety of active void that leads to agreeing new social relations with it. The park does not force to participate in already existing moral or political communities, but tries to move into an unknown future in which the scope of free functioning of individuals will be increased. Doubts about the principles of functioning of the individual self and its discovery as a whole composed of non-coherent parts, as well as its dependence on its own depth full of disordered forces, influenced the understanding of architecture as a set of contradictions whose source is a fundamental void anticipating the empty phenomenal space. The use of this phenomenal void in architecture, as well as the rejection of the whole and unity, had a specific political purpose and drew its inspiration from political analyses. In the Parc de La Villette, metaphysics and politics were brought closer together because the philosophy of void was used to create new conditions for community action. It can be argued that the source of this philosophy was the perception of errors in existing societies dependent on the shortcomings of traditional metaphysics. Spacing (espacement) was one of the key terms in Derrida’s philosophy, which was also combined with the concepts of différance and chôra. The study of the nature of space, especially its transition from the level of pure possibility to the level of sensual phenomenon, also contributes to understanding how well designed space can have an impact on its audience. This explanation is based on Tschumi’s assumption that the space of the Parc de La Villette contradicts the integrating approaches and instead exposes contradictions, but it does so in a way that combines incompatible properties into a single piece of architecture. The specificity of such integration is similar to the invention of a musical phrase, which is an ideological message: moral and political. Such a thesis may raise doubts, however, if both the clearly adopted assumptions and those deduced from the work allow for their ↪Quart Nr 2(52)/2019 logically ordered presentation then to a limited extent it may be assumed that the work has achieved a connection between a specific philosophy of space and its practical application. Derrida combined the problem of spatiality with the problem of transcendental imagination in Kant’s philosophy, who in the first version of Critique of Pure Reason assumed that pure imagination precedes the appearance of time and space, even in their transcendental forms. The imagination in such a situation can be described as a factor activating time and space, which indicates what function is played by movement in this activity. This leads us to recognize that the ultra originary source of pure forms of sensual intuition is movement, which in early Greek philosophy was identified with void and its lack of resistance to phenomena occurring in it. Derrida’s philosophy in search of a certain super-transcendental source of time and space pointed to différance which, like void or the chôra, does not have material features or even any other form of being. Différance is the primary cause of the disruption of motionlessness and the introduction of activity into motionless time and space, thus its activity can be described as spacing (espacement). Derrida’s discoveries in this respect are not entirely original, because Hegel already pointed out when examining the present that it is primarily a differential relation (differente Beziehung), which, being seemingly neutral, influences the present with supernatural force and makes it unidentifiable with itself. Differente Beziehung must similarly influence the originary space, negating its initial character by multiplying its divisions and expanding its boundaries. Différance acts by revealing contradictions wherever there is apparent undifferentiation. Tschumi, composing the Parc de La Villette as a variety of void and a set of incompatible layers, followed the rules of différance or the chôra: he made void visible together with its saturation with contradictions. If space can be considered to be the result of the activity of difference, such activity has a certain regularity, which influences the behaviour of its observers. Differences or contradictions fall into a certain rhythm, which can be considered a manifestation of transcendent order. The problem is that what can be considered the source of such order, namely the logos or God, is partly disorder and error. According to descriptions contained in Timaeus, the world is a combination of forces that drive to order with forces of erroneous necessity that resounds in every order and forces it to return to disorder. Derrida denied the possibility of understanding différance as a theological value, even if it were a negative or apophatic theology, but no categorical denial could be perfect. The assumption that différance or the chôra are not endowed with any substance properties cannot deny their activity, and thus a certain force. Already since Democritus, philosophy has multiplied the names of such a force and the contradictory variety of its manifestations, never forgetting also the necessity for reason to withdraw from the possibility of giving its correct characteristics. Such a withdrawal may be interpreted as an expression of respect and, in certain situations, as a cult of the force that precedes reasonableness. The Parc de La Villette, which is an artistic divagation about the contradictions and forces behind them, can be considered as a place of their sublimation, and therefore as a variation of the temple of what differs from order and disorder. In the traditional sense, a work of art creates an illustration of the outside world, or of a certain text or doctrine. Sometimes it is considered that such an illustration is not literal, but is an interpretation of what is visible, or an interpretation of a certain literary or ideological message. It can also be assumed that a work of art creates its own visual world, a separate story or a separate philosophical statement. The Parc de La Villette represents the (...) last of these possibilities: it is a philosophical statement that develops the premises derived from poststructuralist philosophies and the philosophy of deconstruction. The uniqueness of its being status, however, is that it does so not only at the level of the theoretical assumptions, but also through its functioning as an active philosophical work. This means that a park is a happening philosophy. Its activity, however, does not refer only to the present tense, but is also an attempt to penetrate the future, all otherness and impossibility. This kind of activity assumes that the work, in a sense, does not yet fully exist, but is also still produced in the processes of its interpretation. The theoretical foundations of the park included texts by Bernard Tschumi, in which he questioned traditional ways of creating a work of architecture, postulating in return the use of a long series of negations, which were comparable to the crisis of metaphysics characteristic of contemporary philosophy. It is therefore no coincidence that the publication containing Tschumi’s theoretical text on Parc de La Villette was accompanied by an essay by Jacques Derrida developing some of the architect’s concepts. The next step in integrating philosophy into the process of park design was a series of discussions between Peter Eisenman and Derrida, who completely moved the creation of the park into the world of thoughts, without accentuating the need for their realization in the material reality. The main topic of these discussions was the problem of the chôra, which was taken up by later commentators and used to interpret the park as a work in which the philosophy of the beginning is manifested relating to issues of politics, morality and religion. The park was therefore interpreted as a space of invention within the scope of creating new rules of functioning of the community and democracy. Thinking about the political future may, however, exceed the horizon of ordinary expectations. Although philosophical thought is always connected with contemporary problems and metaphysics sometimes intertwines with current politics, yet at the same time the customs of philosophy also include crossing horizons and thinking about absolute otherness and impossibility. Initially, the chôra, différance, Absolute Otherness (tout autre) and the Impossibile were concepts of pure philosophy of atheistic character, but with the further development of the discussion, more and more theological motifs began to emerge. One of the reasons for this phenomenon was the fact that radical negations of all being, which were contemplated in contemporary philosophy (by Heidegger and Derrida, among others), had previously been manifested in negative and apophatic theologies (by Master Eckhart, among others). Also the category of the “Other”, taken from Emmanuel Levinas, was clearly connected with the thought about God. A further reason for connecting the chôra with the theological thought was the interest in the philosophy of deconstruction expressed by some theologians. Caputo in particular managed to persuade Derrida to participate in discussions on the current status of religion. In the late period of Derrida’s writing, further statements on religious topics appeared. All these reasons led to posing a question about the identity of the chôra and God. Although there were no satisfactory conclusions on this issue, the discussion was also important to create an interpretation of the park as a place of worship. The chôra, representing, according to Plato, the preoriginal emptiness is the place of every beginning, but it turns out that it is not neutral to the being created in it. The chôra deposits itself in every being as an irremovable beginning that interferes with its stability. The chôra, therefore, forces us into a palintropical movement, but it also turns out to be a pure compulsion, an erring necessity and a fundamental force from which, in the human perception, motifs useful to the individual and to the community are extracted. All definitions of this force, including its anthropomorphisation, are formulated in such a way that they allow for building private and collective morality upon them. Such definitions are changed depending on variable political situations. It is difficult to determine whether in the processes of changes in the formulation of “God’s names” any essential value is retained, which is not subject to change. The current definitions of the chôra (God?), which can be found, for example, in the philosophy of Caputo, stress that she is a combination of various and contradictory forces. This characteristic inherits much of Plato’s concept, reminds us of Master Eckhart’s views on Gottheit and, at the same time, is not unfamiliar to Tschumi, whose essays were an apologia of contradictions. The current concept of chôra, transferred into the sphere of politics, is the praise of social diversity and the protection of the difference from the forces of order. In the Parc de La Villette, the future community and democracy were elevated as a system of safe existence of individuals in all their singularity. The park is a temple of a future community in which individual beings have nothing in common. (shrink)

The Tannhäuser Gate. Architecture in science fiction films of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century as a component of utopian and dystopian projections of the future. -/- The films of science fiction genre from the second half of the 20th and early 21st century contained many visions of the future, which were at the same time a reflection on the achievements and deficiencies of modern times. In 1960s, cinematographic works were dominated by optimism (...) and faith in the possibility of never-ending progress. The disappearance of political divisions between the blocs of states and the joint exploration of the cosmos was foreseen. The designers undertook cooperation with scientists, which manifested itself in showing cosmic constructions far exceeding the real technical capabilities. Starting from the 1970s, pessimism and the belief that the future will bring, above all, the intensification of negative phenomena of the present began to grow in films. Fears of the future were connected with indicating various possible defects and insoluble contradictions between them. When, therefore, some dystopian visions illustrated the threat of increase in crime, others depicted the future as saturated with state control mechanisms and the prevalence of surveillance. The fears shown on the screens were also aroused by the growth of large corporations, especially by their gaining political influence or staying outside the system of democracy. The authors of the films also presented their suspicions related to the creation of new types of weapons by corporations, the use of which might breach the current legal norms. Particular objections concerned research on biological weapons and the possible spread of lethal viruses. The development of robotics and research into artificial intelligence, which must have resulted in the appearance of androids and inevitable tensions in their relations with humans, also triggered fear. Another problem for film-makers has become hybrids that are a combination of people and electronic parts. Scriptwriters and directors likewise considered the development of genetic engineering, which led to the creation of mutant human beings. A number of film dystopias contemplated the possibility of the collapse of democratic systems and the development of authoritarian regimes in their place, often based on broad public support. This kind of dystopia also includes films presenting the consequences of contemporary hedonism and consumerism. The problem is, however, that works critical of these phenomena were themselves advertisements for attractive products. (shrink)

In the texts that presented the theoretical assumptions of the Parc de La Villette, Bernard Tschumi used a large number of terms that contradicted not only the traditional principles of composing architecture, but also negated the rules of social order and the foundations of Western metaphysics. Tschumi’s statements, which are a continuation of his leftist political fascinations from the May 1968 revolution, as well as his interest in the philosophy of French poststructuralism and his collaboration with Jacques Derrida, prove that (...) terms such as disruption, dissociation, disfunction, disjunctions and dispersion not only referred to architectural problems but also applied to political criticism and the deepest foundations of thinking itself. His collaboration with Derrida manifested itself primarily in the publication La Case Vide: La Villette, 1985, in which the architect’s design drawings and texts explaining his concepts related to the Park de La Villette were accompanied by an extensive essay by Derrida, which included theoretical problems taken up by Tschumi in a philosophical context. Architectural and philosophical issues were also combined during seven discussion meetings organised by Peter Eisenman, invited by Tschumi to collaborate on the design of the Parc de La Villette. Eisenman, who, like Tschumi, invited Derrida to participate in the design of the park and also led to the publication of Chora L Works: Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman, in which his ideas were confronted with Derrida’s philosophical text. In this case, Derrida’s essay was not a direct commentary on the architect’s concepts, but rather a reflection on the question of the chôra presented by Plato in Timaeus. During the discussion and in his essay, Derrida pointed out that the chôra is a component of the created world, yet it does not belong to it, but precedes it. The originality of the chôra is so radical that she also precedes all the factors of creating the world, including ideas and the Demiurge. Thus a thesis appeared in the metaphysics of the West that the chôra is a form of active abyss, in relation to which all beings are secondary, both those perfect (as ideas or God) and those created, such as the world, things, people or language. This leads to the conclusion that the chôra does not exist, because all existence is a derivative of the chôra. Nor could the chôra be described, since it is a form of developing a space that is preceded by a lack of space characteristic of the chôra. Derrida intended the chôra to be an instance with an exceptional degree of transcendentalism, an anti-metaphysical instance, but also an a-theological one. However, this attempt failed, both in the field of secular philosophy and in the field of theology. Derrida’s characteristics of the chôra to strengthen its transcendentalism and negation of metaphysics had to be expressed in a language that immediately produces new concepts and a new metaphysics that reproduces the categories of the beginning, the origin or the foundation known from earlier philosophical traditions. All forms of criticism of metaphysics are also inspired by negative, apophatic and mystical theology. The undermining of many concepts of permanent meaning and the introduction of new concepts of unstable meaning, characteristic of the philosophy of deconstruction, had many features of originality, but it was directed towards problems whose solutions repeat, with the use of new vocabulary, the findings known in culture since Democritus. Thus, if apophatic philosophy can be regarded as deconstruction avant la lettre, then deconstruction itself in its late versions began to take on the features of a new religion. The exchange of inspiration between theology and deconstruction was manifested in a series of scientific conferences and publications in which Derrida’s philosophical concepts were interpreted within the scope of religious thought. Theological threads began to be found in such concepts of deconstruction as différance or the chôra, while at the same time Derrida himself undertook in his philosophy to study problems such as the Other (L’Autre) or Impossible (Impossible), which belonged to newer theological traditions. As a consequence of the new problems, the deconstruction became closer to the features of a new religion. Philosophy, at least from Kant’s time, has tried to create a system that would take over from religion the tasks of setting moral and political goals. Similarly, Derrida has directed his interest towards the problems of democracy and ethics, which would enable their renewal. Attempts to create a new religion (cleared of old metaphors), a new community or a new democracy bring problems and threats which may be no less troublesome than the previous systems. All promises of freedom carry with them threats, the greater the more they strive for perfection. The renewal of existential orders, sometimes carried out by means of violent changes, is a certain repetitive feature of human cultures. Deep changes, however, do not protect against the return of both old gods and old demons. Tschumi and Derrida were shaped in their youth by the atmosphere of leftist rebellion against the moral and political limitations of ossified communities and the imperfections of democracy. The ethical theme distinguishes many of their works, including the Parc de La Villette. The opposition to the metaphysical traditions of philosophy and architecture contained in this park was prompted by specific political situations and resulted from bringing political issues to the level of philosophical considerations. Achievements made at the level of pure concepts were then subject to elevation, to a kind of sacralization, which made them religious concepts. The deconstruction reached for the stratus of the new religion especially when it found its followers and began to generate moral obligations. In the new situation, terms such as the chôra, l’autre or the Impossible were absolutized and in relation to them a cult and attitude of adoration emerged. The Parc de La Villtette then gained new post-secular meanings, which allow it to be assigned the function of a Temple of Otherness (L’Autre) and Impossible. (shrink)

Architecture and Deconstruction Case of Peter Eisenman and Bernard Tschumi -/- Introduction Towards deconstruction in architecture Intensive relations between philosophical deconstruction and architecture, which were present in the late 1980s and early 1990s, belong to the past and therefore may be described from a greater than before distance. Within these relations three basic variations can be distinguished: the first one, in which philosophy of deconstruction deals with architectural terms but does not interfere with real architecture, the second one, in which (...) a collaboration between Jacques Derrida and a group of architects interested in his concepts is commenced, and the third one, in which completed or only designed objects or new concepts of deconstruction created by architects gain their supremacy over philosophy. The following book analyses these three possible ways, first of all with the reference to Peter Eisenman and Bernard Tschumi. -/- Peter Eisenman -/- Misreading… and Other Errors -/- The issue of relations between Peter Eisenman’s work and philosophy of deconstruction may be referred to his activity more than ten years preceding his direct collaboration with Jacques Derrida (in 1985) and organisation of the exhibition Deconstructivist Architecture at Museum of Modern Art in New York (in 1988). As soon as at the stage of designing the first houses (House I-III, 1967-1970), which almost entirely inscribed in formalistic aesthetics of Modernism, the architect analysed the problem of architecture dependence on its assumptions. All his later designs may be treated as consequence of this initial interest in relations between practice and theory, and at the same time as an introduction to manipulations later on led at the level of metaphysics of architecture. Beginning with the issue of presence, considered in comments to House VI (1972), the number of ideas having their analogies in philosophy of deconstruction increased. The text entitled The End of the Classical: The End of the Beginning, The End of the End (1984), in which Eisenman criticised questions of representation in architecture, its delusive strive for truth and comparably unattainable attempts at ultimate definition of elementary rules, should be acclaimed the breaking point. This attitude was extended by numerous strategies disturbing architecture rules defined at metaphysical level in an essay Moving Arrows, Eros, and Other Errors: an Architecture of Absence (1986). The issue of Eisenman’s passage from formalism to deconstruction has already been much discussed in the literature (Rosalind Krauss, Thomas Patin among others), still it should be mentioned that the threads similar to Derrida’s concept included in Eisenman’s writing reveal untranslatability of architecture and philosophy. -/- Choral Works or Separate tricks -/- In 1985-1986 a series of seven disputes between Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman took place. The pretext for them were designs concerning Parc de la Villette in Paris. The situation of many months of collaboration between a notable philosopher of the second half of the 20th c. and an architect that already had a huge theoretical oeuvre, ended up with a publication of a large volume entitled Chora L Works and it became at the same time a vast study area for historians of contemporary architecture and philosophers. Derrida’s contribution to concept works were his considerations over the idea of chôra, the properties related to this concept were about to be reflected in shapes of the park. Therefore, Chora L Works became an example of the abilities of contemporary art, both in its capability of translation from philosophical ideas to artistic forms and its resistance to tradition of representing in architecture some phenomena and values originating outside this discipline. In the final period of their collaboration both interlocutors started to polemicise with each other more decidedly, what became a separate part of their thought exchange. The exchange of letters between Derrida and Eisenman at the turn of 1989 ended up the period of their direct contacts, nevertheless, at this time precisely a large group of experts in issues of deconstruction joined the discussion and extended the revealed in the former dispute problems into more than ten years of further considerations and publications. Except for a long text by Jeffrey Kipnis, who had participated in the meetings of the philosopher and the architect, there appeared also comments of researchers of artistic theories (K. Michael Hays, Thomas Patin), philosophers (Andrew Benjamin), and even experts in Greek literature (Maria Theodorou or Ann Bergren). Following these debates a contemporary reflection on architecture has saturated with indeed numerous concepts originating in philosophy of deconstruction. -/- Architecture which imitates mute philosophy -/- The series of Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman meetings, which took place in the period of 1985-1987, induced many authors to make comments. Some of them (Jeffrey Kipnis, Ann Bergren, Maria Theodorou) developed the subject of chôra which was introduced to the discussion by Derrida. The problem that was about to be solved was the question of tying up the concept of chôra with architecture, including Eisenman’s architecture and the series of meetings within frames of Chora L Works project. Kipnis on this occasion paid attention to chôra and its character of anachronia which infects any being created within chôra. In other words any event has its counterpart (analogon) in another, earlier event. He demonstrated the similarity of structure of many events and statements from the times of Derrida and Eisenman’s meetings to the almost identical behaviour of figures in Plato’s dialogue Timaeus. The loss of beginning present in this phenomenon was appropriate to both features of chôra and the effects of typical analyses of philosophy of deconstruction. Bergren’s analyses focused on accentuating gender of chôra, which, according to this author, had been neglected hitherto in discussions. She collated chôra descriptions with characteristics of women in myths, early Greek epic and philosophy and she arrived at a conclusion that chôra has features of a single woman and a married one at the same time. And yet Theodorou’s studies showed that in the Homeric epics chôra is not treated as an idea but is related with single things and events. The other part of the comments (represented by Andrew Benjamin and K. Michael Hays’ utterances) concerns Eisenman’s attitude to tradition which was treated as a variety of iteration understood philosophically. Benjamin commenced his considerations at the point of closeness between a definition of tradition and a concept of chôra understood as perpetuation (placement). A problematic issue was for him Eisenman’s complex relation to tradition based on its contest and affirmation at the same time. Overcoming the simple subordination to tradition – according to Benjamin – was based on awareness of the role of repetition in culture not known before. Hays made an attempt to explain the pleasure and torment of repetition with the support of Sigmund Freud and Roland Barthes’ concepts. According to Hays repetitions are attempts of a single being to a certain primal state perceived as free of any tension. In a similar way Rosalind Krauss explained a motif of a grate present in Modernistic art and also exceptionally frequent in Eisenman’s work. -/- Annex Architecture is still writing Balzac novels. Peter Eisenman and literature -/- Architecture’s approach to writing, script or literature, present within Peter Eisenman’s work, is an exceptional phenomenon, furthermore a complex one. The article considers four possible relations. The first one relates to Eisenman’s characteristics as a person extremely gifted with the ability to wordplay, which very ‘play’ reveals skills to create architectural images. In the second approach the attention has been paid to Eisenman’s interests – in the first period of his oeuvre – in linguistic works by Noam Chomsky and his transformational-generative grammar. The third kind of relations applied to overcoming the need for autonomy of architecture (and of modernist aesthetics at the same time) and renew interests in questions of meaning in architecture. The fourth sort of relations occurred when Eisenman started to create reflections of historic or literary narrations in architecture – ‘stone stories’ and architectural fictions of their kind. -/- Bernard Tschumi -/- From perversion to deconstruction In Bernard Tschumi’s writings from the 1970s and 1980s we can find a transposition of important threads of post-structuralist ideas deriving from Georges Bataille, Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida’s works. The analysis of the architect’s writings also shows roots in Phillippe Sollers, Michel Foucault and Denis Hollier’s works. The analysis of borrowed elements from the beginnings of Tschumi’s theoretical activity may be helpful in explaining the contents of his later writings motre inspired by philosophy of deconstruction. The set of his earliest views was inspired by Marxism, Neo Marxism and French Structuralism, mainly by the writings of Henri Levebre and Guy Debord. From the thought of Levebre Tschumi took interest for city as not only a question of urbanistics but also a political issue. From Debord’s concepts he borrowed a conviction about the role of situational violation for changes in the society structure. Some of these beliefs were preserved in his own concepts of architecture as an event. From this period derived also his will to change conservative elements of social structure not by means of political revolution but of theoretical and creative activity. Tschumi acknowledged that the effective way of the proceedings towards achieving his aims would be accepting the role of both a critical intellectualist and architecture expert who would not hide away his left-wing orientation. The speculations defined by the architect as ‘revolting analyses’ were about to characterise contradictions which tear the society apart, penetrate architecture and constitute the basis of culture. Spreading away of the conscience of false assumptions hidden away in various disciplines could have weakened cohesion of a conservative society and influence the will to change among the elites. This way the beginnings of political revolution were rooted in philosophy of architecture. In 1977 Tschumi published his text entitled The Pleasure of Architecture inspired by Roland Barthes’s The Pleasure of the Text, it also included some concepts derived from Georges Bataille and Jacques Derrida. First of all the author used Barthes’s concept which made an assumption that literary activity is pervaded by the spirit of resistance towards social rules, and Tschudi transferred this remark onto architecture. From the ideas of Bataille, acquainted via Holier’s work, he derived his belief that two concepts of space, a conceptual one (defined as Pyramid) and a sensual one (defined as Labirynth), not losing their distinct features, they join in the concept of experienced space which exceeds contradictions. The exceeding itself was defined as the basic rule of architecture and it was referred to situations in which architecture not only negates social needs, but also disavows its own tradition. Crossing the borders applies not only to political issues or permanent rules of the very discipline but also interfering with other fields (especially literature and film). The fact that architecture is associated with organising events turned Tschumi’s attention to questions of violence that result from upsetting architectural order of a given building by its users and the one hand, and on the other from forcing the users to specific acts imposed by this very order. The analysis of the concepts used by Tschumi in his early writings indicates that they are close to definitions that would occur in his reflection in the following years influenced by philosophy of deconstruction. -/- Approaching deconstruction Tschumi in his theories developed in the 1980s presumed that the current social world had undergone a deep process of decay, and the reaction against which ought to be based on ordering-up actions, and also preserving the main outline of disintegration of the whole and its elements in the state of conflict. The statements concerning the nature of the contemporary to Tschumi social relations were applied by him to the world of architecture, this led him to coming up with designing strategies that took into consideration the destabilised character of conditions in which works of architecture were created. New ways of conduct invented by Tschumi drew their inspiration from literature and research on literature, psychoanalysis, structural linguistics, structuralism and post structuralism, and eventually also deconstruction philosophy. The proposed methods were opposed by their author both to functionalism continuity trends and postmodern architecture. Tschumi’s proposals contradicted any forms of conservatism or traditionalism in political sphere as well as in reference to tendencies in architecture. They were not simple contradictions of social or architectural rules, they intrude them from the inside, weaken or escalate the already existing incongruities, they move the boundaries between the areas. Revolutionary illusions about the possibility of radical changes were replaced with strategies which completed, tainted or test former rules in the series of formal games of permutation and combination. Quite different from avant-garde formalism Tschumi’s games were not about maintaining the autonomy of a given area, but on the contrary – polluting it with other areas’ influences. Tschumi enjoyed demonstrating illusions of architecture concerning simple relations between form and function, or between form and meaning. Making use of Freud, Lacan and Foucault’s research he introduced a category of “madness” into architecture allowing an observation that the recognised norms are nothing but merely ones of many possible principles of behaviour, and their recognised status resulted from unjustified hindering innovativeness which is crucial for architecture. To reborn architecture’s capability of changing Tschumi also made use of Barthes’s discoveries concerning rules of narration and works by writers who applied in their writing knowledge on linguistics. Making a work’s author unclear by various mechanical transformations of its elements was however apparent only, and formal rigours imposed on the process of designing liberated possibilities difficult to obtain in more traditional creative action. Another mode of acting introduced by Tschumi was combining his work of elements deriving from outside architecture; joining space records with notation of motion and events accompanying architectural objects among others. These architectural and extra-architectural elements were not unified, on the contrary their heterogenous and conflictual character was stressed. This is how shock, anxiety and instability, typical for live in great metropolises, infiltrated architecture. Taking some ideas of deconstruction philosophy as a pattern Tschumi also took into critical consideration in his essays traditional in architecture oppositions between form and figuration, or theory and practice. By combining various inspirations he eventually worked out an idea of architectural event, which he understood as a series of actions contesting its own field, redefining its sources, principles and elements. An event, understood in this way, was not so much producing works as rather creating conditions of their production and at the same time designing the society different from a hierarchic one. -/- Park of deconstruction Among numerous philosophical strategies of deconstruction most frequently used was questioning the practice of strong opposition of two reasons. In many cases Bernard Tschumi’s writings just consider functioning of the conflict juxtaposition of the ideas of structure and ornament or theory and practice in history of architecture. Violation of traditional relations between terms of this kind, both old and modern, raised Jacques Derrida’s objections, when he was induced for the first time to co-operate with architects’ milieu. During this long lasting thought exchange the philosopher eventually acknowledged Bernard Tschumi’s arguments for reasoning the encroachment of architecture’s fundamental rules. Deconstruction applied in architecture was not a simple transposition or analogy of practices that had been applied by philosophy of deconstruction. We may even say that considering architectural terms became an important formula of deconstruction. Architecture understood in philosophical way became something beyond the practice and theory of its own discipline, a sort of metaphysics of both philosophy and architecture. The deliberate encroachment of simplicity of dividing architecture into theory and practice, for the first time became a clear aim for Tschumi in his drawings and texts entitled The Manhattan Transcripts. The contents of this series of works was a record of characteristic features of this New York district in such a way that not only objects were the subject of the record but also relations between objects, people and events. The record was about to take into consideration a conflict character of elements of this representation and at the same time to avoid applying to them the rule of mimetism. The record became a form of reflection over the very record by an increased control over the ways of representation. Architecture which was considered in the The Manhattan Transcripts was not directed to fulfill the needs of inhabitation or production, it was rather related with hitherto usually marginalised liminal situations: building ostentatiously big monuments, religious cult, war etc. Architecture operating in these relations focused also the attention on the included in it continuous tendency to overpass its own restrictions, the role of violence as its not recognised factor, or the meaning of excess and shock in its operation. Architecture moving from reason towards madness became even more visible in the design of Parisian Parc de la Villette, whose pavilions were defined as folies (in French it means both small park buildings and follies). The park was supposed to be on the one hand a reflection of traditional society disintegration while on the other it questioned basic rules of producing a work of architecture. The traditional rules of designing, based on ordering up, were replaced with the strategies of dysfunction and dissociation. In Tschumi’s opinion methods of this kind may be equivalent of what Derrida named différance. Instead of aiming at mergence, any diversity, plays or variations were strengthen. Tschumi’s texts, in which he explained his attitude, were completed by Derrida’s extent statement entitled Point de folie – Maintenant l’architecture. Derrida’s article is the most significant of all his statements on architecture as a form of thinking and activity. According to the philosopher, architecture should divide space (in French defined as espacement), what enables both thinking and action – it arranges the space of an event. Tschumi’s buildings, defined as folies, in an essential way destabilise any created order, and at the same time they refresh it. Derrida’s statement suggests that architecture may become both metaphor of an order merging a language or a society but also of inner forces which deconstruct and reconstruct it. Therefore architecture is at the same time a construction, a deconstruction and a reconstruction. Parc de la Villette stands out in this system with its attempt to step beyond the scheme of an easy repetition and its heading for chances of achieving more radical otherness. -/- Conclusion Destruction as construction. Paradoxes of deconstruction in architecture -/- Scepticism about persistence and common importance of fundamental values of human culture evinced in philosophers and writers’ works as early as in Greek antiquity, nevertheless it was not expressed so strongly as in the second half of the 20th century. Especially in Heidegger’s work Being and Time (although originated in 1927, still influential in all later philosophy) the following states were characterised: the state of losing the ground (Abgrund), of being out of sight (Unheimlichkeit) and of being out of dwelling (Un-zuhause-sein) – as the basis of self-confidence of conscious being there (Dasein). The entire criticism of philosophy of home and dwelling draws the inspiration from this early writing of the German philosopher, it combines crisis of basic terms of metaphysics with social conditions which are dictated by living in large metropolis. The crisis of both metaphysical foundation and home appears to be similar to the situation of weakening the relations between a man and his dwelling in extensively expanding cities. Whereas philosophy, as well as many disciplines of social sciences, have diagnosed for a long time the destabilisation of fundamental ideas of Western culture and crucial changes in the ways of dwelling, architecture itself occurred to be “the last fortress of metaphysics” (J. Derrida). Among contemporary architects, Peter Eisenman and Bernard Tschumi were the ones who engaged most decidedly in the issues of critical analysis of architecture foundation and its social role. Both the architects noticed new formulas of contemporary social and individual existence, tremendously different from the entire history, and at the same time they affirmed lack of adequacy of architecture concepts to new situations. Both Eisenman and Tschumi used to describe the existing architecture as a tool for consolidation of highly integrated and hierarchised societies, and also as a discipline extremely uncoincidental with the current character of social life based on ideas of freedom and diversity. The means to transform architecture and make a factor of further social changes out of it, was a concept that accentuated revealing the inner contradictions of this discipline, and considering them in designing strategies. Eisenman’s activity, in regard of what has just been noticed, was focused on questioning the basic rules of traditionally comprehended architecture, especially the rule of purpose. The American architect noticed that the concept of architecture as fulfilment the need of location, hides away the fact that the location has to be constantly reconsidered, and hence it is overtaken by change (dislocation). Therefore new concept of architecture propounded architectural activity to translocate the concept of location – more than before – but also to change its status perpetually. Such comprehended architecture should claim, as its main purpose, the constant revision of this purpose and create itself anew permanently. Even Eisenman’s earliest designs of houses nos. I-IV broke with such values as the sense of safety, closeness and familiarity, and just on the contrary they accentuated senses of strangeness, homelessness and loss of confidence. The contradictions within architecture noticed by Tschumi referred to combination of intellectual and sensual values in architecture, when their non-appropriation was defeated by an additional condition, namely the way of experience based on pleasure of excess, marked by insanity. The features of folly were especially visible in his designs of gardens, where the order of planning was mixed with sensual experience introduced by particular elements (both the ones created by nature, and the buildings defined as folies). Parc de la Villette designed by the French architect in Paris put in question not only the common understanding of purpose in architecture but also the ideas of order and integrity, as its plan was based on the combination of independent layers with records of grids of points, various lines and planes. The architecture that collides inadequate elements with each other was supposed to be a kind of an event with no beginning and no end. The architecture treated as an event became a form of a space weakened articulation that maintains its diversity and lack of accordance of the elements building it up. The analyses of Eisenman and Tschumi’s theoretical writings indicate how much the aims of architecture have actually changed; instead of supporting social persistence, the architecture is rather intensifying contradictions, and instead of providing people with the sense of safety, it sublimes danger. From simple acts of defamiliarisation, increasing the distance to itself and enhancing the role of theory, through discomfort, anxiety, not feeling someone at home, weirdness, excess, shock and violence, architecture reached the edge of stability and uncertainty, only to make an attempt at penetrating what is impossible and unutterable, and recording what cannot become the subject of any records. -/- . Marianna Charitonidou's books discuss the problem of changes in the creation of architecture in the 20th century. The author showed representatives of four generations of architects of this period. The first group is represented by Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The second generation was described as a group of opponents to the CIAM environment centered around the Team X grouping and the activities of Alison and Peter Smithson and Aldo van Eyck. Generation three was discussed based on (...) the work of Aldo Rossi and Giancarlo Da Carlo. Generation four, active since the 1980s, was linked to the activities of Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi. The human body has always been one of the most important subjects for European artists. But the way it is displayed in art has varied in different epochs. In ancient Greece, a canon was constituted that proclaimed an ideal vision of the body, derived from the rules governing the universe. This idealization of the human body, neglected in the Middle Ages, was re‑established in Renaissance and Classicist art. However, Renaissance artists also created another image of the human body by borrowing (...) from patterns mainly found in nature, and started to depict their models not in an ideal but rather in a more natural shape. The new non‑ideal forms of art that appeared in Mannerist art made the artists develop a much wider artistic language, which brought into being a variety of individually interpreted artistic representations of the human body. It preceded similar phenomena which became widespread in the twentieth century. Thus, the human body was not always displayed in art as strong, healthy and beautiful. On the contrary, the martyred bodies of Christ and the saints, as well as the depictions of aged, tired or ill people, also carried enormous artistic expression. A distinct problem has occurred with the ways in which corpses have been presented in art. The review concludes with a reference to the contemporary trend called Body‑Art that involves various artistic activities, such as happenings and performances, where the human body is itself used as a significant work of art. Architecture and Deconstruction. Case of Peter Eisenman and Bernard Tschumi -/- Intensive relations between philosophical deconstruction and architecture, which were present in the late 1980s and early 1990s, belong to the past and therefore may be described from a greater than before distance. Within these relations three basic variations can be distinguished: the first one, in which philosophy of deconstruction deals with architectural terms but does not interfere with real architecture, the second one, in which a collaboration between Jacques Derrida (...) and a group of architects interested in his concepts is commenced, and the third one, in which completed or only designed objects or new concepts of deconstruction created by architects gain their supremacy over philosophy. The Shadow of God in the Philosopher’s Garden. The Parc de La Villette in Paris in the context of the philosophy of chôra I Bernard Tschumi’s project of the Parc de La Villette could have won the competition and was implemented thanks to the political atmosphere that accompanied the victory of the left-wing candidate in the French presidential elections in 1981. François Mitterand’s revision of the political programme and the replacement of radical reforms with the construction of prestigious architectural objects (...) and urban assumptions in the French capital gave Tschumi a unique opportunity to realise ideas that polemicised with traditional forms of social life, questioned the basic principles of architecture and included architectural work in the philosophical disputes over the issues of metaphysics. Tschumi’s theoretical assumptions put forward during the design of the Parc de La Villette highlighted the questions of conflict between the main components of the project and suggested that the intensification of differences was analogous to Jacques Derrida’s creation of the concept of différance. It was this philosopher who in a special commentary to Derrida’s project also introduced the concept of maintenant, which aimed at demonstrating that the architect’s polemical inclinations remain in a hidden balance with his inclinations to affirmation of architectural principles. During the discussion between Derrida and Peter Eisenman, who was to take part in the design of the Parisian park, the concept of the chôra was also put forward, which in the course of the debate led to an additional confusion of architectural and philosophical problems. II In the period from the Antiquity to the Renaissance, the dialogue Timaeus was the most frequently commented work of Plato. At present, the most frequently discussed is the issue of the chôra included in it, which aroused fascination among philosophers, researchers of rhetoric, religion, feminism, but also architecture. The work on the chôra also influenced the development of the interpretation of the Parc de La Villette, among which the topics related to the beginning and the change were highlighted. In early uses of the word chôra in Greek, as in Homer’s 18th Book of Iliad, it meant both dancing and a place to dance. On this occasion, it can be seen that it is not possible to determine which phenomenon took precedence in the creation of the name. It cannot be denied, however, that the word concerned a specific movement, as if circular and returning to an indefinable beginning. Despite gaining more and more general meanings, the word chôra has retained its connection with the dance of people on the threshing floor, the dance of bees (choros meliton) or the dance of stars (choros astron). In Timaeus, the chôra is a space filled with movement with an effect similar to shaking the sieve to husk the grain: it separates similar elements from the dissimilar ones. The juxtaposition of the Parc de La Villette and the chôra already at this stage leads to the suggestion that the park was treated by the architect as a place of dynamic changes leading to the establishment of new social solutions. In his statements, the architect confirmed that the park was to be a space of new politics and ethics. The book by Julia Kristeva La Révolution du langage poétique contributed to the spread of the belief that works of art can play a role as factors of political revolution. In this work, the author put forward the thesis that the chôra is a kind of space, the character of which has a destructive influence on attempts to conclude language games. The chôra gives beginning to words, but at the same time, by leaving a trace of this beginning it forces us to renew their meanings. The chôra understood in this way, turns out to be an irremovable beginning, to which one has to return all the time. Kristeva found manifestations of the chôra’s activity in avant-garde French poetry, to which she attributed the role of a mediator between criticism of metaphysics and aspirations for social change. The chôra, violating the language, introduces some voids into it, as if traces of the abyss, which direct the consciousness towards understanding the necessity of political changes. The Parc de La Villette was to pursue similar objectives in the city space. In his essays, Tschumi considered the problems of creating spaces that would give rise to a radical democracy. The proposed rebellious spaces should have the characteristics of a void, in which contradictory forces would occur as forms of pure activity. The means of achieving this goal was to concentrate contradictions and make them visible. The Parc de La Villette was supposed to collect differences as indelible and at the same time by showing them it was supposed to raise awareness of the social world as a conglomerate of differences. Saturation of the space of the park with subversive values results from the character of this space suppressed in the consciousness, as well as from the social diversity which has not been taken into account so far. The main contradictions contained in space relate to the division that exists between its presentation as a mental problem and a sensual one. The park was the deliberate creation of a place that transcends such a division and creates a separate space for negotiation between architectural theories and its practical applications. The purpose of the park was to become a place of future events, which would not hide their conflicting character coming from diversity of both space and society. The method of composition usually aimed at achieving a harmonious whole has been replaced by Tschumi with a system of juxtaposition of non-coherent elements or those resulting from variations and transformations. Tschumi did not seek direct influence on politics in the Parc de La Villette, but made room for thinking about the possibilities of the future. He introduced problems rather than showed solutions to them. The task of the park was to put the principles of architecture into a kind of vibration that would inspire users to participate in the new community. III Tschumi believes that the quality of architecture depends on the theoretical factor it contains. Such a view led to the creation of architecture that would achieve visibility and comprehensibility only after its interpretation. On his way to creating such an architecture he took on a purely philosophical reflection on the basic building block of architecture, which is space. In 1975, he wrote an essay entitled Questions of Space, in which he included several dozen questions about the nature of space. The questions he formulated could be regarded as analogous to the situation in the philosophy of the time, in which the interest in questioning the most obvious forms of understanding the world and intellectual categories increased. The research on space is an area common to many fields of natural sciences, humanities and artistic creation, but it also deals with other problems, such as issues of experience. The concept of space-time continuum proposed by Hermann Minkowski drew attention to the identity of time and space with the events taking place. Probably regardless of the postulates of physicists commenting on Albert Einstein’s discoveries, also in philosophy it increased the importance of the concept of the event which became dominant in Martin Heidegger’s latest work Contributions of Philosophy: Of the event. Furthermore, Tschumi’s reflections on space entered into relation with the problem of experience, which aroused the interest of a group of French philosophers trying to assimilate Georges Bataille’s concept of “inner experience”. Both Tschumi and Derrida referred to Bataille because his views could be used not only to modify the concept of the subject, but also to change the understanding of what constitutes the area of architecture. The discussion on experience has led to the recognition that the subject is not sovereign, but actually a form of what is on their outside. Such insights make it possible to treat the area of the Parc de La Villette as existing mainly when it is organised by its users. The decisive features of the park are its assumptions, according to which it is a variety of active void that leads to agreeing new social relations with it. The park does not force to participate in already existing moral or political communities, but tries to move into an unknown future in which the scope of free functioning of individuals will be increased. Doubts about the principles of functioning of the individual self and its discovery as a whole composed of non-coherent parts, as well as its dependence on its own depth full of disordered forces, influenced the understanding of architecture as a set of contradictions whose source is a fundamental void anticipating the empty phenomenal space. The use of this phenomenal void in architecture, as well as the rejection of the whole and unity, had a specific political purpose and drew its inspiration from political analyses. In the Parc de La Villette, metaphysics and politics were brought closer together because the philosophy of void was used to create new conditions for community action. It can be argued that the source of this philosophy was the perception of errors in existing societies dependent on the shortcomings of traditional metaphysics. Spacing (espacement) was one of the key terms in Derrida’s philosophy, which was also combined with the concepts of différance and chôra. The study of the nature of space, especially its transition from the level of pure possibility to the level of sensual phenomenon, also contributes to understanding how well designed space can have an impact on its audience. This explanation is based on Tschumi’s assumption that the space of the Parc de La Villette contradicts the integrating approaches and instead exposes contradictions, but it does so in a way that combines incompatible properties into a single piece of architecture. The specificity of such integration is similar to the invention of a musical phrase, which is an ideological message: moral and political. Such a thesis may raise doubts, however, if both the clearly adopted assumptions and those deduced from the work allow for their logically ordered presentation then to a limited extent it may be assumed that the work has achieved a connection between a specific philosophy of space and its practical application. Derrida combined the problem of spatiality with the problem of transcendental imagination in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who in the first version of Critique of Pure Reason assumed that pure imagination precedes the appearance of time and space, even in their transcendental forms. The imagination in such a situation can be described as a factor activating time and space, which indicates what function is played by movement in this activity. This leads us to recognize that the ultra originary source of pure forms of sensual intuition is movement, which in early Greek philosophy was identified with void and its lack of resistance to phenomena occurring in it. Derrida’s philosophy in search of a certain super-transcendental source of time and space pointed to différance which, like void or the chôra, does not have material features or even any other form of being. Différance is the primary cause of the disruption of motionlessness and the introduction of activity into motionless time and space, thus its activity can be described as spacing (espacement). Derrida’s discoveries in this respect are not entirely original, because Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel already pointed out when examining the present that it is primarily a differential relation (differente Beziehung), which, being seemingly neutral, influences the present with supernatural force and makes it unidentifiable with itself. Differente Beziehung must similarly influence the originary space, negating its initial character by multiplying its divisions and expanding its boundaries. Différance acts by revealing contradictions wherever there is apparent undifferentiation. Tschumi, composing the Parc de La Villette as a variety of void and a set of incompatible layers, followed the rules of différance or the chôra: he made void visible together with its saturation with contradictions. If space can be considered to be the result of the activity of difference, such activity has a certain regularity, which influences the behaviour of its observers. Differences or contradictions fall into a certain rhythm, which can be considered a manifestation of transcendent order. The problem is that what can be considered the source of such order, namely the logos or God, is partly disorder and error. According to descriptions contained in Timaeus, the world is a combination of forces that drive to order with forces of erroneous necessity that resounds in every order and forces it to return to disorder. Derrida denied the possibility of understanding différance as a theological value, even if it were a negative or apophatic theology, but no categorical denial could be perfect. The assumption that différance or the chôra are not endowed with any substance properties cannot deny their activity, and thus a certain force. Already since Democritus, philosophy has multiplied the names of such a force and the contradictory variety of its manifestations, never forgetting also the necessity for reason to withdraw from the possibility of giving its correct characteristics. Such a withdrawal may be interpreted as an expression of respect and, in certain situations, as a cult of the force that precedes reasonableness. The Parc de La Villette, which is an artistic divagation about the contradictions and forces behind them, can be considered as a place of their sublimation, and therefore as a variation of the temple of what differs from order and disorder. IV In the texts that presented the theoretical assumptions of the Parc de La Villette, Tschumi used a large number of terms that contradicted not only the traditional principles of composing architecture, but also negated the rules of social order and the foundations of Western metaphysics. Tschumi’s statements, which are a continuation of his leftist political fascinations from the May 1968 revolution, as well as his interest in the philosophy of French poststructuralism and his collaboration with Derrida, prove that terms such as “disruption”, “dissociation”, “disfunction”, “disjunction” and “dispersion” not only referred to architectural problems but also applied to political criticism and the deepest foundations of thinking itself. His collaboration with Derrida manifested itself primarily in the publication La Case Vide: La Villette 1985, in which the architect’s design drawings and texts explaining his concepts related to the Parc de La Villette were accompanied by an extensive essay by Derrida, which included theoretical problems taken up by Tschumi in a philosophical context. Architectural and philosophical issues were also combined during seven discussion meetings organised by Eisenman, invited by Tschumi to collaborate on the design of the Parc de La Villette. Eisenman, who, like Tschumi, invited Derrida to participate in the design of the park and also led to the publication of Chora L Works: Jacques Derrida and Peter Eisenman, in which his ideas were confronted with Derrida’s philosophical text. In this case, Derrida’s essay was not a direct commentary on the architect’s concepts, but rather a reflection on the question of the chôra presented by Plato in Timaeus. During the discussion and in his essay, Derrida pointed out that the chôra is a component of the created world, yet it does not belong to it, but precedes it. The originality of the chôra is so radical that she also precedes all the factors of creating the world, including ideas and the Demiurge. Thus athesis appeared in the metaphysics of the West that the chôra is a form of active abyss, in relation to which all beings are secondary, both those perfect (as ideas or God) and those created, such as the world, things, people or language. This leads to the conclusion that the chôra does not exist, because all existence is a derivative of the chôra. Nor could the chôra be described, since it is a form of developing a space that is preceded by a lack of space characteristic of the chôra. Derrida intended the chôra to be an instance with an exceptional degree of transcendentalism, an anti-metaphysical instance, but also an a-theological one. However, this attempt failed, both in the field of secular philosophy and in the field of theology. Derrida’s characteristics of the chôra to strengthen its transcendentalism and negation of metaphysics had to be expressed in a language that immediately produces new concepts and a new metaphysics that reproduces the categories of the beginning, the origin or the foundation known from earlier philosophical traditions. All forms of criticism of metaphysics are also inspired by negative, apophatic and mystical theology. The undermining of many concepts of permanent meaning and the introduction of new concepts of unstable meaning, characteristic of the philosophy of deconstruction, had many features of originality, but it was directed towards problems whose solutions repeat, with the use of new vocabulary, the findings known in culture since Democritus. Thus, if apophatic philosophy can be regarded as deconstruction avant la lettre, then deconstruction itself in its late versions began to take on the features of a new religion. The exchange of inspiration between theology and deconstruction was manifested in a series of scientific conferences and publications in which Derrida’s philosophical concepts were interpreted within the scope of religious thought. Theological threads began to be found in such concepts of deconstruction as différance or the chôra, while at the same time Derrida himself undertook in his philosophy to study problems such as the Other (L’Autre) or the Impossible (Impossible), which belonged to newer theological traditions. As a consequence of the new problems, the deconstruction became closer to the features of a new religion. Philosophy, at least from Kant’s time, has tried to create a system that would take over from religion the tasks of setting moral and political goals. Similarly, Derrida has directed his interest towards the problems of democracy and ethics, which would enable their renewal. Attempts to create a new religion (cleared of old metaphors), a new community or a new democracy bring problems and threats which may be no less troublesome than the previous systems. All promises of freedom carry with them threats, the greater the more they strive for perfection. The renewal of existential orders, sometimes carried out by means of violent changes, is a certain repetitive feature of human cultures. Deep changes, however, do not protect against the return of both old gods and old demons. Tschumi and Derrida were shaped in their youth by the atmosphere of leftist rebellion against the moral and political limitations of ossified communities and the imperfections of democracy. The ethical theme distinguishes many of their works, including the Parc de La Villette. The opposition to the metaphysical traditions of philosophy and architecture contained in this park was prompted by specific political situations and resulted from bringing political issues to the level of philosophical considerations. Achievements made at the level of pure concepts were then subject to elevation, to a kind of sacralization, which made them religious concepts. The deconstruction reached for the status of the new religion especially when it found its followers and began to generate moral obligations. In the new situation, terms such as the chôra, l’Autre or the Impossible were absolutized and in relation to them a cult and attitude of adoration emerged. The Parc de La Villtette then gained new post-secular meanings, which allow it to be assigned the function of a Temple of Otherness (L’Autre) and Impossible. V In the traditional sense, a work of art creates an illustration of the outside world, or of a certain text or doctrine. Sometimes it is considered that such an illustration is not literal, but is an interpretation of what is visible, or an interpretation of a certain literary or ideological message. It can also be assumed that a work of art creates its own visual world, a separate story or a separate philosophical statement. Parc de La Villette represents the last of these possibilities: it is a philosophical statement that develops the premises derived from poststructuralist philosophies and the philosophy of deconstruction. The uniqueness of its being status, however, is that it does so not only at the level of the theoretical assumptions, but also through its functioning as an active philosophical work. This means that a park is a happening philosophy. Its activity, however, does not refer only to the present tense, but is also an attempt to penetrate the future, all otherness and impossibility. This kind of activity assumes that the work, in a sense, does not yet fully exist, but is also still produced in the processes of its interpretation. The theoretical foundations of the park included texts by Tschumi, in which he questioned traditional ways of creating a work of architecture, postulating in return the use of a long series of negations, which were comparable to the crisis of metaphysics characteristic of contemporary philosophy. It is therefore no coincidence that the publication containing Tschumi’s theoretical text on Parc de La Villette was accompanied by an essay by Derrida developing some of the architect’s concepts. The next step in integrating philosophy into the process of park design was a series of discussions between Eisenman and Derrida, who completely moved the creation of the park into the world of thoughts, without accentuating the need for their realization in the material reality. The main topic of these discussions was the problem of the chôra, which was taken up by later commentators and used to interpret the park as a work in which the philosophy of the beginning is manifested relating to issues of politics, morality and religion. The park was therefore interpreted as a space of invention within the scope of creating new rules of functioning of the community and democracy. Thinking about the political future may, however, exceed the horizon of ordinary expectations. Although philosophical thought is always connected with contemporary problems and metaphysics sometimes intertwines with current politics, yet at the same time the customs of philosophy also include crossing horizons and thinking about absolute otherness and impossibility. Initially, the chôra, différance, absolute otherness (tout autre) and the Impossible were concepts of pure philosophy of atheistic character, but with the further development of the discussion, more and more theological motifs began to emerge. One of the reasons for this phenomenon was the fact that radical negations of all being, which were contemplated in contemporary philosophy (by Heidegger and Derrida, among others), had previously been manifested in negative and apophatic theologies (by Master Eckhart, among others).Also the category of the “Other”, taken from Emmanuel Levinas, was clearly connected with the thought about God. A further reason for connecting the chôra with the theological thought was the interest in the philosophy of deconstruction expressed by some theologians. John Caputo in particular managed to persuade Derrida to participate in discussions on the current status of religion. In the late period of Derrida’s writing, further statements on religious topics appeared. All these reasons led to posing a question about the identity of the chôra and God. Although there were no satisfactory conclusions on this issue, the discussion was also important to create an interpretation of the park as a place of worship. The chôra, representing, according to Plato, the preoriginal emptiness is the place of every beginning, but it turns out that it is not neutral to the being created in it. The chôra deposits itself in every being as an irremovable beginning that interferes with its stability. The chôra, therefore, forces us into a palintropical movement, but it also turns out to be a pure compulsion, an erring necessity and a fundamental force from which, in the human perception, motifs useful to the individual and to the community are extracted. All definitions of this force, including its anthropomorphisation, are formulated in such a way that they allow for building private and collective morality upon them. Such definitions are changed depending on variable political situations. It is difficult to determine whether in the processes of changes in the formulation of “God’s names” any essential value is retained, which is not subject to change. The current definitions of the chôra (God?), which can be found, for example, in the philosophy of Caputo, stress that she is a combination of various and contradictory forces. This characteristic inherits much of Plato’s concept, reminds us of Master Eckhart’s views on Gottheit and, at the same time, is not unfamiliar to Tschumi, whose essays were an apologia of contradictions. The current concept of chôra, transferred into the sphere of politics, is the praise of social diversity and the protection of the difference from the forces of order. In the Parc de La Villette, the future community and democracy were elevated as a system of safe existence of individuals in all their singularity. The park is a temple of a future community in which individual beings have nothing in common. (shrink)

RESUMO:O objetivo deste artigo é discutir sobre os conceitos de obrigação e lei natural, tendo como referência o polêmico debate moderno envolvendo intelectualismo e voluntarismo. Em um primeiro momento, destacaremos a rejeição de Wolff ao voluntarismo de Pufendorf e sua orientação em direção ao intelectualismo de Leibniz. Conforme essa nova orientação, uma teoria da lei natural não deve basear seu conceito de obrigação na autoridade das leis e em seu poder coercitivo, mas, por outro lado, unicamente na ideia de necessidade (...) moral, interpretada como expressão da ligação natural universal dos seres racionais com o dever. The following article aims to reconstruct the philosophical-political content of Primo Levi's 1976 essays "About Obscure Writing", focusing especially on the anthropological question of inequality.

A partir de uma definição específica de sistema filosófico, este texto apresenta princípios condutores gerais para guiar o filósofo que deseja criar e propor sistemas. Além disso, este artigo mostra como tais complexos conceituais podem ser definidos com o uso de leis interativas, ligando noções de diferentes naturezas e esclarecendo a estrutura lógica dos sistemas filosóficos. Este artigo contém ainda comparações entre a presente abordagem e a recente desenvolvida por Puntel.

Os problemas da lei e da autoridade marcaram fortemente o pensamento políticomedieval ocidental, e em especial o desenvolvimento da noção de soberania, ponto deconvergência dos grandes conflitos de jurisdição no período. O debate acerca dadistribuição das jurisdições constituiu um dos momentos importantes para a construção damoderna idéia de soberania. Na medida em que se tomava a lei como dada, o sentido daautoridade tinha necessariamente de ser vinculado à idéia de comissão: a autoridade eraum atributo daquele que podia fazer cumprir a (...) lei em nome do legislador divino. Outromomento relevante foi o da emergência do problema do poder legislativo, tal como entendidomodernamente. Jurisdição, a partir daí, passaria a incluir também o direito de criar ede impor as normas válidas para toda a comunidade por um legislador agora humano. Aospoucos, a vontade do príncipe, que não se limita mais pelo rigor da razão e da moralidade,passa a ser entendida como fonte criadora, transformadora e revogadora da lei. Mostrar aslinhas gerais deste percurso constitui o objetivo imediato deste artigo. (shrink)

Nele, digo que farei uma introdução à metafísica das leis da natureza. Uma introdução, em filosofia, consiste da apresentação de um problema filosófico, indicando as razões pelas quais tal problema é um problema, e das principais posições que tentam resolvê-lo, com suas respectivas dificuldades mais aparentes. Uma introdução não deve dar respostas definitivas sobre qual posição devemos aceitar, (...) nem argumentar decisivamente contra ou a favor de uma posição qualquer frente a outras; mas deve fornecer um quadro geral, para que os filósofos que não conhecem o tema possam começar a sua própria investigação. He also frequently insisted on a kind of uniqueness of organisms and/or living bodies – their inherent normativity, their value-production and overall their inherent difference from mere machines. In addition, Canguilhem acknowledged a major debt to the German neurologist-theoretician Kurt Goldstein, author most famously of The Structure of the Organism in 1934; along with Merleau-Ponty, Canguilhem was the (...) main figure who introduced the work of Goldstein and his ‘phenomenology of embodiment’ into France. In this paper I inquire if we should view Canguilhem and Goldstein as ‘biochauvinists’, that is, as thinkers who consider that there is something inherently unique about biological entities as such, and if so, of what sort. Was wissen Sie über Kosovo? Nicht genug. Nicht genug jedenfalls über objektive, wertfrei vorgegebene Fakten, mit deren Hilfe man verantwortungsethische Bewertungen des NATO-Angriffs begründen könnte. Trotzdem halte ich drei wertende Aussagen über den Kosovo-Konflikt für vernünftig. Sie lauten (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge): Der bewaffnete Kampf der Albaner im Kosovo war moralisch falsch. Die Militäreinsätze der Serben im Kosovo waren moralisch falsch (schon vor Beginn der NATO-Bombardements und erst recht danach). Und schliesslich: Die Luftschläge des Westens gegen Serbien waren moralisch falsch. Insbesondere (...) diese letzte Behauptung ist der Zielpunkt des Aufsatzes. Mein Plädoyer für diese Behauptung verläuft auf einem dritten Weg zwischen der gesinnungsethischen Position pazifistischer Rigoristen und der verantwortungsethischen Position ihrer Kontrahenten. Die grundlegende Richtlinie für meine Untersuchung besteht darin, keine Behauptungen als objektiv auszugeben, die in Wirklichkeit auf Wertungen beruhen. Schon beim Blick auf die Vorkriegs- und Kriegsgeschehnisse im Kosovo kommen wir nicht ohne die Hilfe von Werten aus; und ich plädiere dafür, diese Geschehnisse im Lichte einer verzweifelten Menschenliebe anzusehen: Daraus ergibt sich eine neue Form von Pazifismus. The poem is my image of the traditional Chinese understanding of “there is nothing new under the sun.” It was written originally in Chinese during a launch time at the South Hill School in Vancouver, where I was taking English Foundation courses in 2014. I only spent a few minutes completing the poem. The words came out of my mind naturally and smoothly. The moment for me was sacredly silent even though I was sitting in a noisy environment at Dairy (...) Queen; as if time suddenly stopped, as if I was not a part of this world, and as if I was not who I was. It has been said that everything has its season; a time to be born, and a time to die. If everything has its time and place in which I still have the ultimate freedom to choose, I will prefer to stay where I am, letting myself be out of the circle of birth, death and rebirth, not be obsessed with either the beauty of bygones or the hope of hereafter. Para responder a esta questão, focarei minha atenção sobre um período específico do pensamento ocidental, a saber, o que vai de Feuerbach (ou, da publicação da Crítica da razão pura de Kant em 1781) a Sartre e Camus, passando particularmente por Dostoievski e Nietzsche. This book deals with an internal theme of metaphysics, which is the metaphysics of the laws of nature. The author presents traditional contemporary theories, as well as his own original theory, and evaluates each one at a time. He also addresses the problem of the modality of the laws of nature and makes some criticism of the standard view of necessity as truth in all possible worlds, and shows an application of his discussion to the metaphysics of physics. / Este (...) livro trata de um tema interno à metafísica, que é a metafísica das leis da natureza. O autor apresenta as teorias tradicionais contemporâneas, tal como também a sua própria teoria original, e avalia cada uma delas por vez. Das Unechte gehört zur grossen Familie des Falschen - der Lüge, der Verlogenheit, der Unwahrhaftigkeit, der Unaufrichtigkeit, der Heuchelei, der Hypokrisie, des Hohlens, zur Familie von «phoniness», «humbug», «bullshit » und «cant». Aber wo gehört es hin?

Many commentators on Alfred Tarski have, following Hartry Field, claimed that Tarski's truth-definition was motivated by physicalism—the doctrine that all facts, including semantic facts, must be reducible to physical facts. I claim, instead, that Tarski did not aim to reduce semantic facts to physical ones. Thus, Field's criticism that Tarski's truth-definition fails to fulfill physicalist ambitions does not reveal Tarski to be inconsistent, since Tarski's goal is not to vindicate physicalism. I argue that Tarski's only published remarks that speak approvingly (...) of physicalism were written in unusual circumstances: Tarski was likely attempting to appease an audience of physicalists that he viewed as hostile to his ideas. In later sections I develop positive accounts of: (1) Tarski's reduction of semantic concepts; (2) Tarski's motivation to develop formal semantics in the particular way he does; and (3) the role physicalism plays in Tarski's thought. The author asks whether there was a “scientific ‘68”, and focuses on aspects of two specific methodological proposals defined in the 1940s and 50s by the terms “action research” and “mixing methods”, applied particularly to social sciences. In the first, the climate surrounding the events of 1968 contributed to heightening the participative element to be found –by definition– in “action research”; that is: the importance of making the research subjects themselves participants in the design, execution and application of the study (...) of which they are the focus. This approach captured the democratic and anti-authoritarian spirit at the heart of the proposal, which was part of the prevailing climate in those days. The repercussions of 1968 on “mixing methods” focused on studying what had actually occurred, especially between the youth and workers, and therefore, particularly from the point of view of sociology and social psychology, using a “mixed methods” approach. The author explores the proposal of Norman Denzin; but traces the recent origins of both “mixing methods” and “action research” back to the proposals of mainly Kurt Lewin and the Chicago School. Manipulation arguments that start from the intuition that manipulated agents are neither free nor morally responsible then conclude to that free will and moral responsibility are incompatible with determinism. The Zygote argument is a special case of Manipulation argument in which the manipulation intervenes at the very conception of the agent. In this paper, I argue that the Zygote argument fails because (i) very few people share the basic intuitions the argument rests on, and (ii) even those who share this (...) intuition do so for reasons that are unrelated to determinism. Rather, I argue that intuitions about the Zygote argument (and Manipulation arguments in general) are driven by people's intuitions about the deep self, as shown by the fact that intuitions about manipulated agents depend on the moral value of the agent's behavior. As Thomas Uebel has recently argued, some early logical positivists saw American pragmatism as a kindred form of scientific philosophy. They associated pragmatism with William James, whom they rightly saw as allied with Ernst Mach. But what apparently blocked sympathetic positivists from pursuing commonalities with American pragmatism was the concern that James advocated some form of psychologism, a view they thought could not do justice to the a priori. This paper argues that positivists were wrong to read James as offering (...) a psychologistic account of the a priori. They had encountered James by reading Pragmatism as translated by the unabashedly psychologistic Wilhelm Jerusalem. But in more technical works, James had actually developed a form of conventionalism that anticipated the so-called “relativized” a priori positivists themselves would independently develop. While positivists arrived at conventionalism largely through reflection on the exact sciences, though, James’s account of the a priori grew from his reflections on the biological evolution of cognition, particularly in the context of his Darwin-inspired critique of Herbert Spencer. In contrast to many of his contemporaries, A. J. Ayer was an analytic philosopher who had sustained throughout his career some interest in developments in the work of his ‘continental’ peers. Ayer, who spoke French, held friendships with some important Parisian intellectuals, such as Camus, Bataille, Wahl and Merleau-Ponty. This paper examines the circumstances of a meeting between Ayer, Merleau-Ponty, Wahl, Ambrosino and Bataille, which took place in 1951 at some Parisian bar. The question under discussion during this meeting was (...) whether the sun existed before humans did, over which the various philosophers disagreed. This disagreement is tangled with a variety of issues, such as Ayer’s critique of Heidegger and Sartre, Ayer’s response to Merleau-Ponty’s critique of empiricism, and Bataille’s response to Sartre’s critique of his notion of ‘unknowing’, which uncannily resembles Ayer’s critique of Sartre. Amidst this tangle one finds Bataille’s statement that an ‘abyss’ separates English from French and German philosophy, the first recorded announcement of the analytic-continental divide in the twentieth century. In actuarial parlance, the price of an insurance policy is considered fair if customers bearing the same risk are charged the same price. The estimate of this fair amount hinges on the expected value obtained by weighting the different claims by their probability. We argue that, historically, this concept of actuarial fairness originates in an Aristotelian principle of justice in exchange (equality in risk). We will examine how this principle was formalized in the 16th century and shaped in life insurance (...) during the following two hundred years, in two different interpretations. The Domatian account of actuarial fairness relied on subjective uncertainty: An agreement on risk was fair if both parties were equally ignorant about the chances of an uncertain event. The objectivist version grounded any agreement on an objective risk estimate drawn from a mortality table. We will show how the objectivist approach collapsed in the market for life annuities during the 18th century, leaving open the question of why we still speak of actuarial fairness as if it were an objective expected value. To make this case, I present Chappelle’s argument that the potential negative consequences of his racial humor obliged him to leave. Next, I argue against Chappelle’s argument about avoidable harms as the harms are not his responsibility, he was not being negligent, and the benefits of his (...) humor outweigh the harms. I also argue in support of the intuition that another’s failure of comprehension or moral character, even if that failure will predictably result in harms to others, should not convert moral acts into immoral ones. The evolutionary process involved the suffering of quadrillions of sentient beings over millions of years. I argue that when we take this into account, then it is likely that when the first humans appeared, the world was already at an enormous axiological deficit, and that even on favorable assumptions about humanity, it is doubtful that we have overturned this deficit or ever will. Even if there’s no such deficit or we can overturn it, it remains the case that everything of (...) value associated with humanity was made possible by our evolutionary history and all that animal suffering. It can seem indecent to regard all that past suffering as having been worth it simply because it was a causal precondition for our existence. But when we consider the realistic alternatives to the way evolution in fact unfolded, there is nevertheless a conditional case for regarding past sentient suffering as a kind of necessary evil. In a series of recent contributions it has been argued that Franz Brentano’s philosophical position constituted a unified system; Uriah Kriegel has called Brentano's philosophy as “the last grand system of Western philosophy”. The goal of the present paper is to scrutinise this claim and shed light on Brentano's methodological approach and his style of reasoning. I pay particular attention to two aspects: Brentano’s view that philosophy should be done in a rigorous, scientific manner and the fragmentary character of Brentano’s (...) work. I argue that both aspects stand in contrast to the very idea of system-philosophy: the maxim that philosophy should adopt the method of the natural sciences was intended by Brentano as a way of distancing himself from system-philosophy; while the fragmentary character of Brentano’s work does not fulfill the aspiration of system-philosophy to provide an answer to everything. Yet, the incompleteness of his work is not an arbitrary or contingent aspect; it is rather a necessary side-effect of his methodological views. (shrink)
