While feminist critiques of AI are increasingly common in the scholarly literature, they are by no means new. Alison Adam’s Artificial Knowing (1998) brought a feminist social and epistemological stance to the analysis of AI, critiquing the symbolic AI systems of her day and proposing constructive alternatives. In this paper, we seek to revisit and renew Adam’s arguments and methodology, exploring their resonances with current feminist concerns and their relevance to contemporary machine learning. Like Adam, we ask how new AI (...) methods could be adapted for feminist purposes and what role new technologies might play in addressing concerns raised by feminist epistemologists and theorists about algorithmic systems. In particular, we highlight distributed and federated learning as providing partial solutions to the power-oriented concerns that have stymied efforts to make machine learning systems more representative and pluralist. This commentary responds to the article “What Is the Aim of Pediatric ‘Gender‐Affirming’ Care?,” by Moti Gorin, in the same issue of the journal. Gender‐affirming care is often treated as exceptional and subject to heightened scrutiny. This exceptionalization results in its being held to stricter evidentiary standards than other forms of medical interventions are. But values and value judgments are inextricable from the practice of evidence‐based medicine. For gender‐affirming care, values shape what counts as “strong” evidence, whether the legitimacy of (...) transgender identity is assumed versus treated as something to be investigated, how to characterize the testimonial accounts of trans and gender‐nonconforming patients, and more. We argue that these kinds of questions are part of the practice of medicine, not exceptional to transgender people and gender‐affirming care. However, litigation of evidence for gender‐affirming care in state and national policy underscores the moral urgency of thinking carefully about what values ought to guide evidence. (shrink)

Our aim is to argue for a deflationary interpretation of Aristotelian dialectic in the Topics, showing that dialectic is, for Aristotle, a specific sort of regulated debate, in contrast to a widely spread kind of interpretation which conceives dialectic as a method of philosophical investigation. Our claim is that an analysis carefully conducted of certain key texts does provide us with sufficient evidences for defending that the Topics is a handbook which codifies an existent art. This codification has a descriptive (...) character and reveals the rules of the debate, what is the specific kind of argument used in it, how premises are obtained and the predicative relation of the propositions used by the debaters. The mastery of the techniques required by the debate is not grounded in any sort of particular knowledge, rather in linguistic competence. It is by doing a technical usage of this competence that the Topics can be useful for philosophy. (shrink)

Resumo: O estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a produtividade e indicadores econômicos de cordeiros da raça Santa Inês ou mestiços Dorper x Santa Inês terminados em confinamento com dieta à base de palma forrageira. Foram utilizados 16 cordeiros não castrados, sendo oito da raça Santa Inês e oito mestiços Dorper x Santa Inês (87,5% Dorper + 12,5% Santa Inês). A idade média no início da pesquisa foi de 150 dias ± 7,28 e o peso vivo médio foi de 24,28 kg (...) ± 3,45 no início do experimento. Foi utilizada ração única formulada para ganho de peso médio esperado de 200 g/dia. A palma forrageira utilizada foi Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (Opuntia stricta HAW) IV e o feno de capim-buffel (Cenchrus ciliares). O período experimental foi de 58 dias, sendo precedido de nove dias para adaptação dos animais às instalações e à ração, totalizando 67 dias. Os dados das variáveis estudadas foram submetidos à análise de variância, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 8 repetições por tratamento, utilizando-se o teste F para comparação dos quadrados médios dos fatores testados. Os cordeiros consumiram quantidades semelhantes de matéria natural e de matéria seca, porém os cordeiros mestiços da raça Dorper registraram maior consumo de água, ganho de peso total e ganho de peso médio diário. Não houve efeito do grupo genético sobre a conversão alimentar e o escore de condição corporal. A margem de lucro bruto foi maior em 59,65% para os cordeiros mestiços em relação aos da raça Santa Inês. Os cordeiros mestiços apresentaram maior produtividade e melhor resultado econômico. A palma forrageira pode ser incluída em alta proporção na composição de dieta destinada à terminação de cordeiros. Palavras-chave: cactácea; cordeiro confinado; desempenho; margem de lucro bruto. Abstract: This study evaluated the productivity and economic indicators of Santa Inês and Dorper ×Santa Inês crossbred lambs finished in confinement on a forage cactus-based diet. Sixteen uncastrated lambs were used: eight purebred Santa Inês and eight Dorper × Santa Inês crossbreds (87.5% Dorper + 12.5% Santa Inês). At the onset of the experiment, lambs averaged 150 ± 7.28 days old and weighed 24.28 ± 3.45 kg. A single ration was formulated for an expected average weight gain of 200 g/day. The forage cactus used was Mexican Elephant Ear (Opuntia stricta HAW), and the hay was buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris). The experimental period lasted 58 days, following a 9-day adaptation period, totaling 67 days. Data were subjected to analysis of variance in a completely randomized design with eight replicates per treatment, using the F-test to compare mean squares. Lambs consumed similar amounts of fresh and dry matter, but Dorper crossbred lambs had higher water consumption, total weight gain, and average daily weight gain. The genetic group had no effect on feed conversion and body condition score. The gross profit was 59.65% higher for the crossbred lambs compared to the Santa Inês breed. Crossbred lambs showed higher productivity and better economic results. Forage cactus can be included in high proportions in diets for finishing lambs. The principal thesis in this review-essay is that the key linguistic terms in Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre especially have two main meanings that appear at first sight to be almost in contradiction or opposed to each other. The reader of Fichte therefore has to work hard to overcome any apparent conflicts in the “double sense” of his philosophical terminology. Accordingly, I argue that Fichte’s linguistic method and use of language should be seen as part of his chief philosophical method of synthesis, where (...) we have to carry out a similar procedure and attempt to reconcile opposites using the power of the imagination. This thesis is put forward by means of a number of practical examples and in the context of some critical reflections on the recently published Cambridge Companion to Fichte, eds. Effect of feeding level during feedlot back-grounding on animal growth and feed efficiency of the winter-spring period Abstract. The present evaluated the effect of feedlot feeding system and the amount of feed offered (OF) on average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) during the winter-spring season (182 days) in a calf rearing system. Forty Hereford heifers (159 ± 25 kg) were randomly assigned to one of five treatments during winter (98 days): winter grass pasture a rate of 5 kg (...) of dry matter (DM) per 100 kg liveweight (LW) and four total mixed rations with 30 % of roughage fed in a feedlot, differing in OF (2,2 %, 2,5 %, 2,9 % and 3,2 % LW on a dry matter basis). During spring (84 days), all treatments grazed a mixed pasture (6 kg DM /100 kg LW) in weekly plots, with independent plots per repetition (n=2 plots/treatment). The experiment was analyzed as a completely randomized design, using orthogonal contrasts to compare the effect of feeding system: feedlot (SAC) vs. grazing (SAP) and the effect of OF during winter in SAC. At the end of the feedlot period (first fourteen days), SAC treatments reported weight loss compared to SAP (-0,46 vs. 0,44 kg/day, P < 0,001), and this weight loss was also associated with OF (P= 0,0195). However, during the whole winter-spring period, SAC showed a greater ADG compared to SAP (0,68 vs. 0,55 kg/day, P= 0,001) and a better FE (10,7 vs. 9,65 kg DM/kg LW, P ≤ 0,05). In SAC, ADG increased with OF (P = 0,02), but no significant differences were found in FE (P > 0,05). An ad libitum feedlot feeding system results in greater body weight at the end of spring. En primavera (84 d), todos los tratamientos pastorearon una pradera mezcla 2 (6 kg MS/100 kg PV), en parcelas semanales, independientes por repetición (n = 2 parcelas/tratamiento). El experimento se analizó según un diseño completamente al azar, utilizando contrastes ortogonales para comparar el efecto del sistema de alimentación: corral (SAC) vs. pastoreo (SAP) y el efecto asociado a la OA durante el invierno en SAC. A la salida del corral (primeros catorce días), los SAC reportaron pérdidas de peso respecto a SAP (-0,46 vs. 0,44 kg/día, P < 0,001), también asociadas a la OA (P = 0,0195). Sin embargo, en el período invierno-primavera, SAC presentó mayores GMD respecto a SAP (0,68 vs. 0,55 kg/día, P = 0,001) y una mejor EC (10,7 vs. 9,65 kg MS/kg PV, P ≤ 0,05). En SAC, la GMD incrementó con la OA (P = 0,02), pero no se encontraron diferencias significativas en la EC (P > 0,05). La alimentación a corral ad libitum determina mayores pesos a fines de primavera. O experimento foi analisado usando um delineamento completamente ao acaso, utilizando contrastes ortogonais para comparar o efeito do sistema de alimentação: confinamento (SAC) vs. pastagem (SAP) e o efeito associado à OA no inverno em SAC. A pecuária brasileira tem destaque acentuado quanto a sua participação no produto interno Bruto nacional (PIB), entretanto, dentro da cadeia produtiva das proteínas de origem animal, a ovinocultura ainda se apresenta como uma atividade com pouca expressividade e tecnificação frente a outras espécies animais domésticas, desta forma seu fomento e próspero desenvolvimento é dependente de inúmeros fatores, sendo que destes o correto manejo reprodutivo de espécies , a escolha de raças autóctones ou do exterior com boa adaptabilidade para serem criadas (...) em regiões de clima tropical e subtropical encontrados no Brasil e a correta seleção quanto a características reprodutivas de matrizes e principalmente de jovens carneiros cujos quais se deseja utilizar como reprodutores em rebanhos que buscam a constante evolução produtiva se faz muito importante. Tal cenário traz à tona a importância da realização de estudos referentes a suplementação de elementos como vitaminas e microminerais, que embora não sejam os maiores constituintes das dietas ofertadas aos animais de interesse zootécnico, exercem grande influência não só no crescimento e desenvolvimento do tecido muscular como também podem estar positivamente correlacionados quanto aos aspectos reprodutivos . O presente trabalho objetivou a avaliação da qualidade seminal e morfometria testicular de carneiros púberes submetidos a suplementação injetável de minerais e vitaminas, sendo utilizados 30 reprodutores divididos em três grupos de dez animais cada, com delineamento dos grupos inteiramente casualizado. Ao primeiro grupo foi administrada suplementação vitamínica e mineral (Grupo VM), no segundo grupo houve apenas suplementação vitamínica (Grupo VIT) e no terceiro grupo a suplementação mineral (Grupo MIN). No presente trabalho buscou-se avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de complexo vitamínico e mineral sobre a qualidade do sêmen ovino, medidas morfométricas testiculares e alteração nas concentrações dos hormônios cortisol e testosterona. Palavras chave: elementos-traço, hormônios, nutracêutico, ovinos, sêmen -/- Brazilian livestock has a strong emphasis in terms of its participation in the Gross National Product (GDP), however, within the production chain of animal proteins, sheep farming still presents itself as an activity with little expressiveness and technology compared to other domestic animal species. in this way its promotion and development depends on the correct methods, which are the reproductive of sheep species, the choice of indigenous or foreign breeds with good adaptability to be created in tropical and subtropical regions found in Brazil and the correct selection of selected animals and selection of products that are very important for the demand for products of constant breeding. This scenario leads to the development of important studies for the supplementation of such vitamins and trace minerals, which, although not the largest components of diets, exert a great influence not only on the growth of muscle tissues but can also be positively correlated with their reproductive aspects. The present evaluation of seminal quality and testicular morphometric of pubertal animals includes an injectable supplement of vitamins and minerals, using 30 sires distributed in three groups of animals each, with a completely random design of the products. The first supplementary group was given the mineral supplement (VM Group) in the second group only vitamin supplementation (VM Group) and the mineral supplementation group (MIN Group). RESUMO -/- Este estudo aborda a análise econômica e zootécnica de um sistema de criação de gado de corte implementado na Fazenda Escola Lagoa do Sino (FELS), localizada em Buri - SP. O estudo baseou-se em um extenso levantamento de dados obtidos ao longo do ciclo produtivo que se estendeu do final de 2022 até janeiro de 2024. A FELS, com uma área de aproximadamente 21 hectares de pastagens destinada a esta pesquisa, emprega um sistema de manejo composto por dois (...) funcionários. O rebanho, constituído por 14 vacas ½ Nelore e ½ Angus, juntamente com um touro registrado PO da raça taurina Senepol, é alimentado exclusivamente por pastagens de Brachiaria decumbens, complementada por suplementação mineral. A avaliação econômica foi conduzida considerando custos operacionais, resultando em um déficit significativo no primeiro ciclo produtivo, principalmente devido a investimentos iniciais como a aquisição de animais. No entanto, uma análise mais profunda indicou que a otimização dos custos operacionais, especialmente relacionados à mão de obra, poderia reduzir esse déficit para um patamar mais gerenciável, sinalizando uma trajetória de aprimoramento nos ciclos subsequentes. Os índices zootécnicos desempenharam um papel crucial na análise da viabilidade econômica, os resultados foram comparados a benchmarks nacionais e estudos anteriores, revelando pontos fortes, como a taxa de fertilidade das vacas, que superou a média nacional. No entanto, foi identificado um desvio significativo no valor da carne produzida por hectare, indicando a necessidade de uma investigação mais detalhada sobre variáveis específicas do sistema. Diante dos desafios iniciais, a pesquisa conclui que a continuidade do estudo, aliada à implementação de estratégias identificadas para aprimoramento, é essencial para consolidar um sistema eficiente e economicamente viável. A busca contínua por eficiência, revisão de insumos na alimentação, aprimoramento do manejo nutricional e estratégias de gestão de recursos humanos são destacadas como áreas-chave para aprimorar a rentabilidade nos ciclos subsequentes. Sendo assim, a pesquisa contribui não apenas para a compreensão do desempenho econômico do sistema, mas também para a identificação de estratégias práticas que podem ser implementadas para aprimorar a eficiência e a rentabilidade na produção de gado de corte. ABSTRACT This study addresses the economic and zootechnical analysis of a beef cattle farming system implemented at the Lagoa do Sino School Farm (FELS), located in Buri - SP. The study was based on an extensive data collection carried out throughout the productive cycle, spanning from late 2022 to January 2024. FELS, with an area of approximately 21 hectares of pastures dedicated to this research, employs a management system consisting of two employees. The herd, comprised of 14 ½ Nelore and ½ Angus cows, along with a registered Senepol PO breed bull, is exclusively fed on Brachiaria decumbens pastures, supplemented with mineral supplementation. The economic evaluation was conducted considering operational costs, resulting in a significant deficit in the first productive cycle, mainly due to initial investments such as the acquisition of animals. However, a deeper analysis indicated that the optimization of operational costs, especially related to labor, could reduce this deficit to a more manageable level, signaling an improvement trajectory in subsequent cycles. Zootechnical indices played a crucial role in the analysis of economic viability, and the results were compared to national benchmarks and previous studies, revealing strengths such as the fertility rate of cows, which exceeded the national average. However, a significant deviation was identified in the value of meat produced per hectare, indicating the need for a more detailed investigation into specific variables of the system. Facing initial challenges, the research concludes that the continuity of the study, coupled with the implementation of identified improvement strategies, is essential to consolidate an efficient and economically viable system. The ongoing pursuit of efficiency, the review of inputs in feed, improvement of nutritional management, and human resource management strategies are highlighted as key areas to enhance profitability in subsequent cycles. Thus, the research contributes not only to understanding the economic performance of the system but also to identifying practical strategies that can be implemented to improve efficiency and profitability in beef cattle production. Neste artigo buscamos contribuir com os estudos culturais comparados. Interessa-nos analisar duas práxis criativas cujos corpos produzem diálogo com processos históricos de descolonização na América Latina. Atuando como pesquisadora argentina insider no Brasil, estudamos comparativamente improvisações de tango dança e luta de espadas do reisado, considerados instrumentos-chave para analisar as matrizes corporais referentes às culturas de ascendência africana nos dois países Argentina e Brasil. Combinando a metodologia de análise filosófica com a autoetnografia, e a antropologia audiovisual com a análise coreológica, (...) na perspectiva da Antropologia da Dança, produzimos, em cocriação com artistas do Cariri, o audiovisual Tango e Reisado (2019). Na edição das imagens abordamos o status da alteridade do corpo nesses dispositivos performáticos, e discutimos o problema epistemológico da produção de conhecimento nas artes latino-americanas. As performances do tango e do reisado, aparentemente longínquas, expressam correspondências latentes pela via dos candombes, semelhanças e contrastes que procuramos desvendar no trabalho de registro audiovisual de seus workflows. Assim, desde a perspectiva da filosofia em campo, indagamos o valor da transmissão poética de saberes populares a partir das suas dramaturgias -/- In this paper we seek to contribute to the comparative cultural studies. We are interested in investigating two creative praxes, whose bodies produce dialogue with historical processes of decolonization in Latin America. Acting as an Argentinean researcher insider in Brazil, we studied comparatively improvisations of tango dancing and the sword fighting of the reisado, considered key-instruments to analyze the bodily matrices referring to cultures of African descent in both countries Argentina and Brazil. Combining the methodology of philosophical analysis with autoethnography, and audiovisual anthropology with choreological analysis, under the perspective of Anthropology of Dance, we produced, in cocreation with artists from Cariri, the audiovisual Tango and Reisado (2019). In editing the discussed the epistemological problem of knowledge production in Latin American arts. Tango and reisado performances, apparently distant, express latent correspondences via candombes, similarities and contrasts that we seek to unravel in the work of audiovisual recording of their workflows. Thus, from the perspective of Philosophy in the field, we question the value of the poetic transmission of popular knowledge from its dramaturgies. (shrink)

The last 20 years have witnessed a deepening of the imbrication between capital and the university. This paper seeks to map one point at which this binding occurs: in critical theory. Recently scholars in strategic management have turned to processual and relational ontologies in an attempt to reimagine the logics of profit, value, and growth. These same ontologies have appealed to critical geographers as a means of reconceiving space as unfixed. Drawing on a case study of Deleuze’s appropriation in management (...) literature, I show how such ontologies presuppose a vitalism that necessarily reproduces and obscures the structures of exploitation. In arguing against the likelihood of consciousness in non-human animals, Descartes advances a slippery slope argument that if thought were attributed to any one animal, it would have to be attributed to all, which is absurd. This paper examines the foundations of Thomas Willis’ comparative neuroanatomy against the background of Descartes’ slippery slope argument against animal consciousness. Inspired by Gassendi’s ideas about the corporeal soul, Thomas Willis distinguished between neural circuitry responsible for reflex behaviour and that responsible for cognitively or (...) consciously mediated behaviour. This afforded Willis a non-arbitrary basis for distinguishing between animals with thought and consciousness and those without, a methodology which retains currency for neuroscience today. (shrink)

ABSTRACT“Evidence-based” methods, which most prominently include randomized controlled trials, have gained increasing purchase as the “gold standard” for assessing the effect of public policies. But the enthusiasm for evidence-based research overlooks questions about the reliability and applicability of experimental findings to diverse real-world settings. Perhaps surprisingly, a qualitative study of British educators suggests that they are aware of these limitations and therefore take evidence-based findings with a much larger grain of salt than do policy makers. Este artigo examina criticamente cinco erros teóricos fundamentais na filosofia de Tomás de Aquino, especialmente em suas quinque viae (cinco vias) da Summa Theologiae. A análise começa com uma discussão sobre problemas de tradução nos termos tomasianos, destacando a distinção entre esse (ser) e existência. Os erros identificados incluem: (1) a confusão entre esse e essentia em Deus, resultando em uma noção incoerente da natureza divina; (2) a contradição ao tratar a essência como distinta do ser, o que implicaria que (...) a essência é "nada"; (3) a suposição de uma dimensão além do ser de Deus, o que comprometeria Sua posição de condição última; (4) a identificação equivocada de Deus com o maxime ens (ente supremo) nas quinque viae, em vez de com o ipsum esse subsistens (o próprio ser subsistente); e (5) a falha das cinco vias em demonstrar verdadeiramente o "Ser de Deus", limitando-se a postular um ente supremo. O estudo também critica o uso que Tomás faz dos conceitos de actus purus (ato puro) e causalidade, argumentando que essas categorias restringem indevidamente o conceito de Deus. Resumo: Com o objetivo de compreender os processos de identificação do sujeito em alguns funcionamentos discursivos dos vlogs, no YouTube, este trabalho analisa o modo como o contraponto entre a eficácia imaginária e o jogo significante na história produz o reconhecimento de lugares e poderes do dizer no desconhecimento constitutivo de sua relação com o Interdiscurso, nas condições de produção específicas do digital. Os recortes delimitados são: as designações equívocas de vlogueiro, youtuber e criador; a produção da autoria na imbricação (...) de diferentes materialidades, a composição autoral que lhe é própria; e a discursividade que sustenta os enunciados “Eu sou eu mesmo” e “Broadcast yourself”. A análise do material aponta para compreensões que dizem respeito da relação da forma-sujeito do Capital com a discursividade dos objetos paradoxais em sua formulação e circulação digital. Abstract: Aiming to understand subject identification processes in some Youtube vlogs' discursive functioning, this work analyses how the counterpoint between the imaginary impact and the significant role in history produces the acknowledgement of places and powers of saying in the constitutive unawareness of its relation to the Interdiscourse, taking the particular production conditions of digitality. The cutout of this research is: the equivocal designations vlogueiro, youtuber and criador; the authorship production in the encounter of different materialities, the authorial composition which is proper to them; and the discursivity that supports the following utterances: "Eu sou eu mesmo" ["I am myself"] and "Broadcast yourself". I discuss in this paper the six requirements Aristotle advances at Posterior Analytics A-2, 71b20-33, for the premisses of a scientific demonstration. I argue that the six requirements give no support for an intepretation in terms of “axiomatization”. Quite on the contrary, the six requirements can be consistently understood in a very different picture, according to which the most basic feature of a scientific demonstration is to explain a given proposition by its appropriate cause.

Este estudo tem como principal objetivo apresentar a relação dos Padres Capadócios – Basílio de Cesareia, Gregório de Nissa e Gregório de Nazianzo – com o conceito de “persona” que, por sua vez, contribuiu para a formulação do Símbolo Niceno-Constantinopolitano e passou a ser utilizada pelo Papa Dâmaso I, no Ocidente. O texto mostra que para se chegar ao uso de “persona” para se referir à Santíssima Trindade, diversas disputas teológicas permearam todo o século IV, principalmente aquelas contra a heresia (...) ariana. Foi necessária a proximidade dos Padres Capadócios com a sabedoria pagã e, consequentemente, de todo o esforço linguístico que dela eles tomaram proveito, para chegarem à fórmula “mía ousía – trêis hypostáseis” e, assim, fazer uso do termo “persona” para os Três da Trindade. As sociedades ocidentais têm considerado, pelo menos nas últimas décadas, a juventude como um elemento motriz e dinamizador do processo de transformação social. É por isso vista, pela sociedade, como a impulsionadora da História, agente de reforma, de motivação, de esperança e, até mesmo, em alguns casos, como “sujeito revolucionário”. O certo é que os jovens, nos anos sessenta e setenta, determinaram uma importante função no desenvolvimento da modernização das estruturas sociais e, rompendo com as estruturas normativas dominantes em busca (...) de outros espaços e canais alternativos, assumiram novos valores, novas condutas, marcando novos rumos e abrindo novas perspetivas. A geração jovem surge, nesta época, como mentora de importantes convulsões sociais. Exemplo disso é, já na década cinquenta, a chamada geração Beat, formada com jovens intelectuais que contestavam a falta de pensamento crítico e o exagerado consumismo; na década de sessenta e posteriormente a ela, surgem vários movimentos, estilos e comportamentos que modificaram inexoravelmente o modo de vida, destaca-se o Movimento pelos Direitos Civis; a proliferação de vários géneros musicais, como o iniciado com Elvis Presley; os inumeráveis protestos de rua, como o movimento estudantil de Maio de 68 ou a Primavera de Praga; enfim, em definitivo, a juventude surge, pela primeira vez, como um sujeito histórico com definições identitárias claras e não reduzida, como muitas vezes o foi, a um agregado populacional. Por esta função fortemente revigoradora e transformante da identidade social, a juventude constituiu-se como um objeto de estudo, nomeadamente para a sociologia empírica. Daí a proliferação de vários estudos sociológicos que têm a juventude como objeto de investigação, os quais nos proporcionam um conhecimento mais aprofundado das metamorfoses e das novas estruturas de sentido que se vêm desvelando na faixa etária juvenil e que nós, no decorrer deste trabalho, nos propomos analisar, mormente, os comportamentos, as crenças, as atitudes e os valores dos jovens na contemporaneidade. O artigo busca trabalhar um aspecto pouco explorado da argumentação de "História da Loucura": a questão, brevemente enunciada por Foucault, de um "a priori concreto" das ciências "psi". Nisso, serão trabalhadas duas questões principais, a saber: a do estatuto do conhecimento sobre as doenças mentais como tributário de uma demanda moral (não científica), e a do estatuto do médico como "cientista" da loucura. Isso também em relação as manifestações religiosas e seus deuses. Neste caso, estará usando o nome “Paris” para (...) se referir a um lugar específico do universo. O que você acaba de fazer não é meramente proferir um som, mas proferir um som que de alguma forma lhe permite selecionar uma localidade específica dentre todas as outras do universo. É desta localidade que você fala. Mas como isto é possível? Que tipo de mecanismo garante a alguém o poder de proferir um nome e, com isto, selecionar um particular específico dentre todos os outros do universo? Apesar do aparente relacionamento entre valores pessoais e empreendedorismo, esse assunto tem sido sujeito a poucas pesquisas acadêmicas. Este artigo objetiva esclarecer, no contexto brasileiro, como os valores pessoais dos empreendedores influenciam o grau de profissionalização em seus negócios. O artigo utiliza uma abordagem descritiva e exploratória, com dados coletados via levantamento e grupo focal. Os resultados mostram que, no contexto brasileiro, ética e valores capitalistas têm uma grande influência sobre o profissionalismo, mais do que risco, inovação, história familiar, etc. (...) Determinados valores pessoais de pequenos empreendedores se tornam valores organizacionais que direcionam suas ações em ambientes desafiadores. A constatação de que apenas uma das dez variáveis independentes adotadas neste artigo foi estatisticamente considerada influente sobre o profissionalismo constitui sua principal contribuição teórica. Faz repensar o profissionalismo, não mais como uma variável dependente, mas como um valor pessoal, assim como o restante, de modo independente, inovador e soberano. (shrink)

Examino a controvérsia sobre como melhor definir o delírio—um sintoma central de patologias como a esquizofrenia e a demência—e apresentarei algumas das principais dificuldades envolvidas em sua caracterização como crenças. A partir disso, tiro conclusões sobre os limites do vocabulário mentalista da dita psicologia do senso comum e sobre a forma como delírios e outros fenômenos elusivos devem ser propriamente caracterizados pela psiquiatria para que uma explicação integrativa destes seja alcançada.

Humanity faces two fundamental problems of learning: learning about the universe, and learning to become civilized. We have solved the first problem, but not the second one, and that puts us in a situation of great danger. Almost all of our global problems have arisen as a result. It has become a matter of extreme urgency to solve the second problem. The key to this is to learn from our solution to the first problem how to solve the second one. (...) This was the basic idea of the 18th century Enlightenment, but in implementing this idea, the Enlightenment blundered. Their mistakes are still built into academia today. In order to le arn how to create a civilized, enlightened world, the key thing we need to do is to cure academia of the structural blunders we have inherited from the Enlightenment. Climate change and biodiversity loss are interconnected crises that demand integrated solutions. While mitigation strategies such as reforestation and afforestation, renewable energy development, and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) are essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, they also pose risks to ecosystems, specifically biodiversity. This review examines the biodiversity impacts of these key mitigation strategies, identifying potential trade-offs and opportunities for synergy. Large-scale forest plantations can sequester carbon but often reduce biodiversity when implemented as monocultures. Renewable energy expansion, (...) particularly wind and solar farms, contributes to decarbonization but can disrupt habitats and wildlife migration. BECCS, though promoted for negative emissions, requires extensive land conversion, threatening biodiversity and food security. To balance climate action with ecological integrity, this study advocates for an eco-surplus culture, where mitigation strategies not only minimize harm but actively enhance biodiversity. Nature-based solutions, such as restoring native forests and integrating biodiversity-conscious renewable energy planning, offer pathways to maximize co-benefits. Policy frameworks must prioritize biodiversity safeguards, promote sustainable land use, and ensure community participation. Addressing climate and biodiversity goals together through holistic, long-term planning is essential for fostering environmental resilience and achieving genuinely sustainable climate solutions. Em função da pandemia de Covid-19, o ano de 2020 marcou a vida de todos. Em escala global, exigiu-se da população restringir as interações físicas o que fosse possível. Ainda assim, as interações sociais permaneceram, tanto as remotas, proporcionadas pela tecnologia da internet e das comunicações, quanto as presenciais, incluindo nestas as indispensáveis ou não. Portanto, mesmo que se entenda que a pandemia tenha ocasionado restrições sociais, em muitas ocasiões talvez seja melhor dizer que ela ocasionou restrições físicas à sociabilidade. (...) Neste sentido, vale tentarmos atualizar o termo kathēkonta da ética estoica em função dessa interação social que se afigurou nesse momento. Enquanto seres de comunidade, “pois nossa raça toda é disposta para a comunidade 3”, como afirma Hiércoles, quais atos adequados que mantém e fomentam a interação ética tanto individual quanto social? Kathēkonta enquanto atos adequados será visto na perspectiva de Hiérocles situada em seu tratado Sobre Atos Adequados, onde ele sustenta tais atos enquanto interações sociais éticas. E uma vez definido esse termo da ética estoica na perspectiva de Hiérocles, como perceber esses atos nesta situação pandêmica em que as interações sociais físicas enfraqueceram? Nessa nova configuração social, teriam os atos adequados algum papel relevante no desenvolvimento ético do indivíduo e da sociedade? Esses atos não teriam espaços de efetivação em tal circunstância? In his "Elementa Iuris Naturae et Gentium" Johann Gottlieb Heineccius presents a unique account of love as the principle of natural law, referring to the main concern of early modern protestant theories of natural law: the importance of securing subjective rights by a law. Heineccius accepts the universal character of subjective rights derived from human nature, claiming their protection as natural duties required by a law. This chapter provides an attempt to explain the specific ways in which Heineccius deals with (...) the paradoxical situation that the protection of subjective rights by a natural law theory requires certain limitations of the use of such rights, in order to avoid the mutual collision of such rights. For this purpose it focuses on the rights to free thought and free speech, which are very good example for that. While the first part reconstructs the way in which Heineccius claims the specific concern of natural law and points out continuities and discontinuities with his predecessors, the second part focuses on the requirement of natural law for limitation of free thought and free speech in case of collision of subjective rights. Philosophers have been contemplating the nature of the mind for centuries and have produced mountains of intricate jargon, thought experiments, and views, that map a landscape of interminable disputes. One such dispute is between philosophers who believe that the mind can be explained as a mechanism and philosophers who insist it cannot. In this paper I take a look at this dispute and argue that it is unique in philosophy and a key to the nature of the mind.

In childhood as a limiting experience of/in language, tirelessly exposing the human condition in front of the world. Thus, accompanying the main character of the plot, little Hushpuppy — a six-year-old resident of the “Charles Doucet Island”, experienced as “the Bathtub” —, we are shaken by the forms of life there, considered bestial and not recognized by city humans. Hushpuppy, his father and friends resist attempts to destroy their existence by the forms of the state that try to domesticate them, imbued with the logic that primitives must come to civilization, just as children must become adults. This paper's purpose was to identify the key sources when formulating competitive advantages of hotel chains. The research assessed the financial activities performance included in annual hospitality industry reports and on their official websites; questioning of loyal and potential customers; the five-point Likert scale and the Pearson correlation coefficient were applied to understand the possible consumer reaction to a certain competitive advantage or its absence. The paper confirms the effectiveness of key sources used by management to win and retain competitive (...) advantages: despite strong dependence on the economic cycle phase etc., after the devastating crisis of 2007, 2008, but also to achieve sustainable growth. All the networks examined over the last decade have expanded their presence in international markets, diversified the portfolio of brands, increased the number of jobs and profits. It was also proved that the opinion of the final consumer is still not sufficiently taken into account in the assessment of the Pearson correlation coefficient (the latter allowed the authors to propose their own definition of the competitive advantage in the industry). The paper attempts for the first time to consider the competitive advantages of hotel chains from the point of view not only of theorists and business practitioners, but also with the view of the opinion of the services consumer; there were identified the discrepancies, which consideration would allow to increase the level of guest satisfaction and, accordingly, the efficiency of the hotel business. In future papers, the authors plan to verify the existence of a correlation between the degree of guest loyalty to a particular hotel network and the main financial results of its activities. A filosofia, quando compreendida como investigação rigorosa da realidade em sua totalidade, encontra na linguagem não apenas um instrumento de expressão, mas seu objeto primário fundamental. Desde Frege e Wittgenstein, tornou-se evidente que “pensar” (Denken) e “dizer” (Das Sagen) estão intrinsecamente ligados: o pensamento é linguagem dotada de sentido (TLP, 4.). Nesse horizonte, tudo aquilo que não pode ser pensado também não pode ser dito, e vice-versa. Esse vínculo estrutural entre linguagem e mundo revela que os limites daquilo que conseguimos (...) significar delimitam também os contornos do nosso mundo possível. Mas o mundo, como totalidade de fatos, não se reduz ao que conseguimos dizer sobre ele. A reflexão a seguir propõe um esclarecimento rigoroso da noção de estrutura como categoria metafísica fundamental, mostrando que o equívoco de se tomar o discurso como medida do real decorre do esquecimento da linguagem em sua configuração teórica mais adequada. Os direitos subjetivos são direitos e, em primeiro lugar, dos homens. Mas os "homens" também não conseguiriam coligar muito bem as energias. Acreditamos cada vez menos na humanidade. As reivindicações proliferam porque são irredutivelmente singulares. Essa é a diferença que vale e importa. Como diz Marcel Gauchet: em oposição ao ideal democrático original (de Rousseau, por exemplo), em que se exigia de: [...] cada cidadão que se apropriasse do ponto de vista do conjunto a partir de seu próprio ponto de (...) vista, na nova configuração que se desenha o que prevalece é a disjunção, e que cada um faça valer sua particularidade diante de uma instância do geral do qual não se pede em nenhum momento que ele abrace o ponto de vista. (GAUCHET, 1998). O homem nunca aparece no horizonte de nossas mobilizações, porque está sufocado nas novas formas de fazer o nós. É verdade que o homem, a humanidade, o humanismo nunca se deram bem com as utopias. Nem com as utopias literárias nem com as utopias em ação. As primeiras se apoiavam em certa concepção do ser humano: bom em si mesmo, mas vivendo em comunidades políticas que precisavam ser refundadas. As utopias em ação se apoiavam em uma visão geral da humanidade na história (raça contra raça, classe contra classe), mas a revolução que conduziria à libertação e à saída da história deveria ser realizada no interior de um país, de uma nação ou de um povo, mensageiro do destino de toda a humanidade. Foi assim com o nazismo. O ariano é o Prometeu da humanidade [...]; ele sempre mostrou ao homem o caminho que deveria percorrer para tornar-se o mestre dos outros seres vivos sobre a terra; se o fizessem desaparecer, uma escuridão profunda desceria sobre a terra, em alguns séculos a civilização humana acabaria e o mundo se tornaria um deserto (HITLER, 1939). E preciso acabar com o humanismo e o cosmopolitismo. E partir a história humana ao meio: ela sempre foi a história da luta da raça ariana contra seus inimigos, em particular contra a raça judia. E necessário recorrer a uma solução final: livrar a terra para sempre dos judeus para finalmente assegurar o triunfo da raça ariana: a Alemanha é a detentora desse papel predestinado. Foi assim com o "socialismo real". Mais uma vez era necessário partir a história humana ao meio. Ela sempre foi a história da luta de classes: não pode mais haver classes. Desde sempre houve propriedade privada. Ela deve ser abolida. Mas o fim definitivo das classes e da propriedade deve passar primeiro pela exacerbação da luta de classes no interior de um país: o proletariado e o campesinato são herdeiros desse papel histórico. Assim, na época em que o marxismo era considerado um horizonte intelectual intransponível, e a revolução proletária era vista como o horizonte intransponível desse horizonte, "o homem" do "humanismo" era desprezado porque supunha uma unidade de essência além das comunidades verdadeiras, definidas em si mesmas por um antagonismo fundamental: antagonismo interno das classes (exploradoras/exploradas), antagonismo externo dos povos (opressores/oprimidos) ou das culturas (dominantes/minoritárias) etc. Não se podia conceber uma causa comum à humanidade nem preparar ou defender uma revolução hipotética dos humanos. E, além do mais, contra quem e contra o quê? "Não vejo homem", dizia-se após Marx, "vejo apenas operários, burgueses, intelectuais." O homem não era a medida de todas as coisas, o verdadeiro padrão de medida era menor: por exemplo, os burgueses ou os proletários. A humanidade, ou melhor dizendo, a realidade da história definia-se em um nível inferior. As utopias revolucionárias parecem ter abandonado o horizonte ideológico de nossa Modernidade. Em todo caso, as utopias políticas. Mas pode ser que nossa época ainda tenha o poder de conceber novas utopias. Pois não nos livramos delas tão facilmente. Expulsas pela porta da história, elas retornam pela janela da imaginação. Expulsas de nosso ideal político, serão pós-políticas. Podemos vislumbrar essas novas utopias revolucionárias nos dois traços que definem o contemporâneo, através da ambiguidade da expressão "direitos humanos". -/- OS NOVOS CAMINHOS OPOSTOS DA UTOPIA: O HOMEM ENTRE DEUS E ANIMAL -/- THE NEW OPPOSITE WAYS OF UTOPIA: THE MAN BETWEEN GOD AND ANIMAL -/- Por: Emanuel Isaque Cordeiro da Silva -/- Na Antiguidade, em particular em Aristóteles, os homens eram definidos por duas grandes oposições. Acima deles, havia os deuses; abaixo deles, havia os animais. O que os homens tinham em comum com um opunha-os ao outro; e o que os distinguia de um ligava-os ao outro. Os (...) homens tinham em comum com os deuses o fato de serem racionais — o que os opunha aos animais, que não podem argumentar ou raciocinar. Mas os homens tinham em comum com os animais o fato de serem viventes mortais — o que os opunha aos deuses, que são viventes imortais. Havia, portanto, três tipos de viventes (zôa) ou, por assim dizer, três "faunas": os viventes imortais racionais, os viventes mortais irracionais e o homem, entre seus dois "Outros": nem irracional como os animais nem imortal como os deuses. Isso garantia a natureza humana. O homem está no centro do mundo, não no sentido de que é a espécie superior, mas no sentido de que sua natureza, por mais imperfeita que seja, está encerrada, e como que a meio caminho, entre duas outras naturezas perfeitas: o animal e o deus. Sabíamos o que tínhamos de fazer, pois sabíamos o que somos. Mas porque sabíamos que não somos nem animais nem deuses, sabíamos também o que não podíamos fazer. Querer subir ao céu dos deuses era pecar por húbris, pela "desmedida" daquele que quer ultrapassar seus limites naturais. Inversamente, tender a descer ao nível dos animais, abandonar sua faculdade racional, era cair na vergonhosa bestialidade. Hoje, porque não sabemos mais quem somos, nós, seres humanos, ora nos identificamos com os animais (liberais), ora com os deuses (libertarianos). Essas são as duas utopias de nossa Modernidade. Não utopias de quem imagina viver em outro lugar, mas utopias de quem imagina ser outro. Não podemos mais pensar o que somos: seres humanos. Perdemos as duas referências que nos definiam: nossos limites superior e inferior. Como os outros animais, somos fruto da evolução natural e o que nos diferencia deles não é nem uma diferença absoluta nem uma oposição de natureza. Hoje sabemos que existe consciência na maioria dos animais superiores; que há modos de comunicação em muitas espécies sociais e de inteligência nos primatas; e que há modos de transmissão de conhecimentos culturais em certas espécies de chimpanzés etc. Por outro lado, não acreditamos mais que o Céu seja habitado por deuses imortais. Para boa parte da Modernidade, o Céu é vazio: é o que chamamos de secularização do mundo; e para outra parte da Modernidade, para a qual Deus ainda é mestre absoluto, Ele é tão inconcebivelmente grande, tão elevado e tão distante de nós que não podemos mais nos definir em relação a Ele. Portanto, não há nenhuma distinção que nos separe dos animais, mas ao mesmo tempo há uma distância infinita que nos separa do além. Surgem então as duas grandes utopias que hoje se contrapõem no horizonte humano. De um lado, a utopia pós-humanista é herdeira do ideal libertário do gozo; ela sonha como um novo "eu", mais poderoso do que jamais foi, e triunfante sobre sua própria animalidade e mortalidade. De outro lado, a utopia animalista é herdeira das grandes esperanças de libertação coletiva do século XX; ela sonha com um novo "nós", uma nova comunidade além da política, a comunidade de todos os animais sensíveis. Sonhamos para o homem um futuro divino ou um destino animal. Haveria lugar para uma utopia humanista entre essas duas utopias anti-humanistas? Ainda é possível sonhar para a humanidade um destino à sua medida? É muito tarde para uma nova utopia política ou ainda não é hora para uma utopia humanista, para a revolução cosmopolítica? Seria possível deduzir a priori esses três ideais a partir de uma única certeza: nós nos tornamos indivíduos. Mas como seriam os programas revolucionários na era dos direitos subjetivos? Livrar-nos do Mal. Nós quem? Talvez você e eu. Ou os habitantes de uma nova Cidade pós-política. O primeiro tipo de programa seria o de uma utopia libertariana: o Mal seria tudo que obstrui e limita a ação, o pensamento e a vida individuais: a doença, a velhice, a morte, em resumo: a animalidade. Seríamos animais sensíveis aos animais sensíveis. Nossa ética seria na segunda pessoa: compaixão, culpa. Animalismo. No segundo caso, os indivíduos seriam humanos, pois a Cidade seria estendida a todos os homens. O Mal seria a guerra ou a condição de estrangeiro. A Cidade boa, a Calípolis de Platão, seria uma Cosmópolis. Todos os seres humanos seriam detentores dos mesmos direitos, isto é, de liberdades iguais. Quem seríamos nós? Seríamos a humanidade. The aim of the present article is to display and debate the main interpretive and philosophical claims defended by Simon Robertson in his Nietzsche and Contemporary Ethics. Robertson presents innovative and stimulating arguments that might interest primarily readers willing to better understand the Nietzschean moral theory and researchers interested in broader issues of contemporary moral theory, particularly in the analytic tradition. The author covers the main debates in the area, taking sides in disputes going on in normative theory, metaethics, moral (...) psychology and Nietzschean studies. Robertson mobilizes a set of interpretive and (purely) philosophical arguments, which deliver to the reader a final picture of Nietzsche’s perfectionist ideal. It is a theoretically consistent ideal that can be endorsed as a relevant alternative in the contemporary landscape of ethical theories. This alternative involves a powerful critique of the normative authority of morality, a sentimentalist moral psychology, a conception of the good life that combines the goods of excellence and flourishing, a modest conception of normativity that brings together internalist and externalist elements, and, finally, an irrealist metaethics that differs both from realism (which presupposes ontologically robust normative properties)and from reformist views (such as fictionalism and non-cognitivism). The article reconstructs Robertson's main arguments in favour of this set of claims, seeking to assess (1) to what extent they are convincing, both in their philosophical and interpretive ambitions and (2) how capable his methodological choices are to address critical challenges. Kant's 1772 letter to Markus Herz is celebrated for its marking the ‘Critical turn’ in Kant's thought, a turn that would move Kant away from the speculative metaphysics of the 1750s towards the Critical philosophy of 1781. It is here, seemingly for the first time, that Kant asks the question concerning the relationship between concepts and objects, telling his former pupil that the answer to this question ‘constitutes the key to the whole secret of hitherto still obscure metaphysics.’ For anyone (...) interested in the development of Kant's thought this makes for exciting news since it is the posing of this question that marks Kant's first step towards the Critique and it is the answer to this question that will come to identify the ‘objective portion’ of the Transcendental Deduction, a text that already begins with a rehearsal of points raised in Kant's letter. But while the letter to Herz is clearly itself a key to what Kant sees as the ‘whole secret of hitherto still obscure metaphysics’, the question concerning concepts and objects itself poses interpretive problems that need to be addressed. Above all, one needs to ask how Kant arrived at such a question. (shrink)
