Our research aimed to study the ongoing phenomena of cross-border displacement of the Ukrainian population resulting from the Russian aggression that started on the 24th of February 2022. In the first stage of this research, we managed to get the opinions of over 500 refugees with a focus on their needs, concerns, plans, and expectations. Collected data also allowed a reconstruction of social-demographic profiles of fleeing Ukrainian refugees. The preliminary outcomes are presented in the report.

A dominant view of guilt and shame is that they have opposing action tendencies: guilt- prone people are more likely to avoid or overcome dysfunctional patterns of behaviour, making amends for past misdoings, whereas shame-prone people are more likely to persist in dysfunctional patterns of behaviour, avoiding responsibility for past misdoings and/or lashing out in defensive aggression. Some have suggested that addiction treatment should make use of these insights, tailoring therapy according to people’s degree of guilt-proneness versus shame-proneness. In this (...) paper, we challenge this dominant view, reviewing empirical findings from others as well as our own to question (1) whether shame and guilt can be so easily disentangled in the experience of people with addiction, and (2) whether shame and guilt have the opposing action tendencies standardly attributed to them. We recommend a shift in theoretical perspective that explains our main finding that both emotions can be either destructive or constructive for recovery, depending on how these emotions are managed. We argue such management depends in turn on a person’s quality of self-blame (retributive or ‘scaffolding’), impacting upon their attitude towards their own agency as someone with fixed and unchanging dispositions (shame and guilt destructive for recovery) or as someone capable of changing themselves (shame and guilt productive for recovery). With an eye to therapeutic intervention, we then explore how this shift in attitude towards the self can be accomplished. Specifically, we discuss empathy-driven affective and narratively-driven cognitive components of a process that allow individuals to move away from the register of retributive self-blame into a register of scaffolding ‘reproach’, thereby enabling them to manage their experiences of both shame and guilt in a more generative way. I analyze figures and themes of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” evident in chapter thirty-six of the Quran. I argue that the two texts share (1) a neck fetter fixing the head; (2) a spatial organization of barriers before and behind and cover- ing above; (3) a theme of failure to see the truth and assault upon those who tell the truth, and (4) a theme of transcendent reality as a context of meaning. I argue that the Quran displays an (...) inheritance of some Platonic thought in Arabic at least two centuries prior to any known translation of Plato. (shrink)
In this paper, I will try to look at Leibniz from the topos of Indian philosophy. François Jullien called such a strategy “dépayser la pensée” – to withdraw an idea from its familiar environment and to see it through the lens of a different culture. “Read Confucius to better understand Plato.” I am referring to Indian philosophy, especially to some Buddhist systems, in order to highlight certain aspects of Leibniz’s mode of thinking, that I define as “atomistic approach”.
Seneca’s tragedy is considered from the point of view of the intertextual relations with other Greek and Roman literary works, connected with the Corinthian history about Jason and Medea. Seneca represents a special view of the hierarchy of male virtues: Jason is a husband, a father and a mentor. The rage of Medea is ‘legalized,’ the reaction of Jason is depicted in the Stoic terms. The main characters of the tragedy are represented by the Roman writer in a pedagogical rather (...) than a heroic posture: the adults seek to educate each other in the process of their conflict over custody of their children. This paper focuses on the process of self-transformation through which a person comes to embody the ideal of her religion’s vision of the divine, as far as that ideal is expressible in a human life. The paper is concerned with the self as the subject of religious commitments, traits, religious aspirations and religiously inspired ideals. The self-transformative journey that people are invited to undertake poses a number of philosophical and practical difficulties; the paper explores some of these difficulties, concentrating on (...) those that arise in connection with the notion of potential future selves. This paper suggests that imaginative reflection upon exemplary individuals provides one way through these difficulties, for these individuals can show us what it looks like when someone achieves, or draws close to, the ideal. The paper deals with the problem of future biology teachers’ vocational preparation process and shaping in them of those capacities that contribute to the conservation and enhancement of our planet’s biodiversity as a reflection of the leading sustainable development goals of society. Such personality traits are viewed through the prism of forming the future biology teachers’ professional and terminological competence. The main aspects and categories that characterize the professional and terminological competence of future biology teachers, including terminology, nomenclature, term, nomen (...) and term element, have been explained. The criteria and stages of shaping the future biology teachers’ professional and terminological competence during the vocational training process have been fixed. Methods, techniques, technologies, guiding principles and forms of staged work on the forming of an active terminological dictionary of students have been described and specified. The content of the distant special course “Latin. Botanical Terminology”, which provides training for future teachers to study the professional subjects and to understand of international scientific terminology, has been presented. It is concluded that the proper level of formation of the future biology teachers’ professional and terminological competence will eventually ensure the qualitative preparation of pupils for life in a sustainable development era. Victoria Davion in “Itch Scratching, Patio Building, and Pesky Flies: Biocentric Individualism Revisited” takes biocentric individualism to task, focusing in particular on my paper, “Reverence for Life as a Viable Environmental Virtue.” Davion levels a wide-range of criticisms, and concludes that we humans would be better off putting biocentric individualism aside to focus on more important issues and positions. Worries raised by Davion can be defended by elaborating on the position laid out in the original paper, including a background (...) normative theory appealing to hypothetical virtuous ideal observers, upon which the position is drawn. Many of her criticisms appear to arise out of misreading or ignoring what is explicitly argued. When these misconstruals are corrected, it becomes clear that there is still space for a viable virtue of reverence for life. (shrink)
The National Library of Finland and the Von Wright and Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Helsinki keep the collected correspondence of Georg Henrik von Wright, Wittgenstein’s friend and successor at Cambridge and one of the three literary executors of Wittgenstein’s Nachlass. Among von Wright’s correspondence partners, Elizabeth Anscombe and Rush Rhees are of special interest to Wittgenstein scholars as the two other trustees of the Wittgenstein papers. Thus, von Wright’s collections held in Finland promise to shed light on the (...) context of decades of editorial work that made Wittgenstein’s later philosophy available to all interested readers. In this text, we present the letters which von Wright received from Anscombe and Rhees during the first nine months after Wittgenstein’s death. This correspondence provides a vivid picture of the literary executors as persons and of their developing relationships. The presented letters are beautiful examples of what the correspondence as a whole has to offer; it depicts – besides facts of editing – the story of three philosophers, whose conversing voices unfold the human aspects of inheriting Wittgenstein’s Nachlass. Their story does not only deal with editing the papers of an eminent philosopher, but with the attempt to do justice to the man they knew, to his philosophy and to his wishes for publication. The study of a person existence in Internet space is certainly an actual task, since the Internet is not only a source of innovation, but also the cause of society's transformations and the social and cultural problems that arise in connection with this. Computer network is global. It is used by people of different professions, age, level and nature of education, living around the world and belonging to different cultures. It complicates the problem of developing common standards of behavior, a (...) system of norms and rules that could be widely accepted by all users. On the other hand, the Internet space can be viewed as a new form of existence where physical laws do not work, and in connection with this, social ones are often questioned. This paper focuses on how social norms regulate relations in Internet space. The authors represents the typology of deviant behavior in the network. The empirical basis of the research includes the sociological survey of students of the senior courses in the Institute of Computer Science and Technology of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Sociological survey allows to identify students’ understanding of Internet space. The selection of students is conditioned by the fact that IT professionals are considered simultaneously as ordinary users of the network and as future professionals in this field. (shrink)
This study linked strategic planning and staff management relatively and cumulatively to the effectiveness of post-graduate programmes at two public Nigerian universities. The study was directed by the formulation and testing of three null hypotheses. The entire population of 157 administrators (including 24 deans and 133 HODs) participated in a survey, where a questionnaire was used to elicit responses. The questionnaire was designed by the researcher but validated by five experts. The reliability for internal consistency was determined using Cronbach’s alpha, (...) with acceptable indices. Data obtained were analysed using Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses. In a bivariate sense, both strategic planning and staff management significantly correlated with the effectiveness of post-graduate programmes respectively. Cumulatively, the two predictors are responsible for explaining 57% of the variation in the effectiveness of post-graduate programmes, with the remaining 43% of the unexplained variance attributable to other extraneous variables. The composite contribution of the two predictors was verified to be statistically significant. Staff management was the strongest predictor ahead of strategic planning. It was recommended, among other things, that the coordinator of post-graduate programmes should ensure that plans are made concerning the procurement and maintenance of facilities that will be required for the smooth running of the programmes in graduate schools. Recent academic fashions have posited visual images of colonial landscape space as forming part of a network of intellectual influences that promoted both a culture of imperialism and an imperial culture in the nineteenth century. Frequently these analyses concentrate on constructing an overarching socio-political interpretation into which to place this art, thereby ignoring the influence of artistic and aesthetic theory in the creation, assessment and reception of these images.

This paper aims to explore the feasibility of a restorative justice service in the context of work‐related deaths, specifically in Victoria. Section 1 provides a brief summary of restorative justice and the kind of processes that are most likely to be used in the context of work‐related death. Section 2 discusses an issue for the use of restorative justice in this context that is similar to the problem of whether it is fair or reasonable to assign personal criminal liability (...) for corporate fault. Section 3 looks at what it is that restorative justice can offer a bereaved family. Section 4 presents a range of suggestions as to how restorative justice could be used in this context—informed by real cases wherever possible. Section 5 presents a brief proposal regarding what may be the most effective and efficient strategy or model, in terms of developing a pilot restorative justice service in this area. Section 6 offers some preliminary guidance for a further consultation that would involve all the key stakeholders. (shrink)

O sistema político brasileiro preenche, formalmente, os requisitos mínimos de uma poliarquia, ou seja, um sistema democrático em que o poder é atribuído com base em eleições livres e em que há ampla participação política e concorrência pelos cargos eletivos. Esse sistema implica disputa pelo poder, tolerância à diversidade de opiniões e oposição política. No entanto, o que se percebe na sociedade é que essa estrutura formal não garante a democratização dos recursos socialmente produzidos, como bens, direitos e serviços básicos (...) proporcionados pelo Estado. Assim, destaca-se que a questão democrática vai além do estabelecimento das regras formais que caracterizam esse tipo de regime. É necessário retomar o conteúdo social da democracia e ampliar os direitos de cidadania para reduzir a distância entre as esferas formal e real1 ; afinal, a cidadania plena é condição indispensável para a concretização dos direitos humanos. A estruturação dos direitos de cidadania no Brasil esteve constantemente vinculada aos interesses das elites socioeconômicas e políticas; poucas vezes foi resultado de um projeto com ampla participação política e voltada para a inclusão social. Com base nessa constatação, o historiador José Murilo de Carvalho 2 desenvolveu uma teoria de que vivemos em uma “estadania”, pois muitos de nossos direitos seriam resultantes de uma “concessão” relativa do Estado, feita de cima para baixo a uma população muitas vezes desinteressada da “coisa pública”. Dessa forma, os direitos costumam ser vistos como concessões ou benefícios oferecidos pelos grupos dominantes ao restante da população. Ainda de acordo com o autor, a construção da cidadania no Brasil inverteu a ordem cronológica apontada por T. H. Marshall, uma vez que primeiro foram estabelecidos os direitos sociais e ampliados os direitos políticos, durante o período ditatorial do Estado Novo, para depois serem implementados os direitos civis, o que gerou a formação de uma pirâmide invertida dos direitos. Já o cientista político carioca Wanderley Guilherme dos Santos utiliza o conceito de “cidadania regulada” para identificar a concessão dos direitos por parte do Estado como maneira de mediar possíveis conflitos entre classes. Nesse caso, o Estado controlaria os grupos sociais por meio de práticas regulatórias, que variam entre o aumento da participação (proporção de indivíduos que possuem acesso aos direitos) e a redução da liberalização (capacidade das instituições sociais de garantir a consolidação dos direitos). Aqui, o governo Vargas deve ser mencionado, uma vez que Santos cita, como políticas desse período, a criação das leis trabalhistas e o controle dos sindicatos. Como consequência, a classe trabalhadora conquistou direitos, mas perdeu poder de contestação. No entanto, identifica-se na história do Brasil alguns momentos em que as mobilizações políticas ganharam destaque, em geral tendo como referência a luta por direitos sociais e liberdade. Com base em um conjunto de práticas repressivas, a ditadura militar, iniciada em 1964, impôs um retrocesso à construção da democracia e dos direitos humanos no país. E foi então que movimentos populares e sindicais do campo e da cidade passaram a exigir distribuição justa dos bens produzidos pelo trabalho e maior participação social nas decisões sobre os rumos adotados pelo país. Além disso, foi pela resistência à ditadura e durante a redemocratização formal do Brasil que diversos grupos se fortaleceram para as lutas subsequentes em prol dos direitos humanos. Em meio ao processo de redemocratização, foi promulgada a Constituição Federal de 1988, que contou com destacada participação social em sua elaboração e incorporou diversas reivindicações populares, sobretudo no campo das liberdades civis e políticas. A constituição brasileira estabelece alguns mecanismos de participação política, como o plebiscito, o referendo e a iniciativa popular (artigo 14), para garantir, ao menos no âmbito formal, a democracia participativa. Outro exemplo é o orçamento participativo, modelo em que os cidadãos, por meio de uma complexa ferramenta de gestão pública, participam da elaboração e da fiscalização do orçamento, principal instrumento de distribuição dos recursos públicos. Outro momento de mobilização política de nossa história recente foram as jornadas de junho, que aconteceram em 2013, nas quais parte da população saiu às ruas para lutar pela efetivação de alguns direitos, como transporte público de qualidade e gratuito, e para questionar o funcionamento da democracia. A socióloga fluminense Maria Victoria Benevides chama de democracia semidireta as formulações institucionais firmadas pela Constituição de 1988. O objetivo do modelo participativo de democracia proposto pela Constituição não é “substituir” o sistema representativo, mas possibilitar a conscientização social, essencial para a efetivação da cidadania, que só é possível com uma participação política permanente, plena e ativa de todos os cidadãos. Contudo, a Constituição ainda apresenta muitas limitações, em especial no que se refere às dimensões social e econômica. Nessas dimensões residem os principais obstáculos à construção e à concretização dos direitos humanos e da cidadania na vida social brasileira. Na verdade, há grande diferença entre a cidadania formal e a cidadania real no Brasil. A cidadania formal é a que está presente nas leis, imprescindível para a liberdade e para as garantias individuais; sem ela, estaríamos à mercê da vontade de qualquer grupo dominante. Ou seja, ela garante igualdade de todos perante a lei. Já a cidadania real, aquela do dia a dia, mostra justamente o contrário, isto é, que não existe igualdade entre os seres humanos e que prevalece a desigualdade em todas as dimensões da sociedade. Apesar da luta de diferentes setores da sociedade, principalmente aqueles ligados às minorias sociais, no dia a dia percebemos que a maioria da população tem seus direitos desrespeitados. Portanto, apesar de existirem formalmente, a democracia, a cidadania e os direitos ainda são bastante restritos. Podemos dizer que o Brasil é uma democracia em construção, em todos os sentidos. O rumo e o alcance que ela terá vão depender da participação da população brasileira, em especial da juventude, nas lutas pela implantação dos direitos humanos para todos os cidadãos. (shrink)
Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975) pioneered biodynamic agriculture in Australia. In 1928 he was the first of (ultimately) twelve Australians to join Rudolf Steiner’s Experimental Circle of Anthroposophical Farmers and Gardeners (ECAFG) which was based at the Goetheanum, Dornach, Switzerland. Ernesto trained as an artist for five years at Milan’s prestigious Brera Academy. He visited his brothers in Australia, broad-acre immigrant farmers in Western Australia, in 1912 and 1914 and during these visits he worked on their, and other’s, farms. In 1916 he (...) enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and served as a stretcher bearer on the battlefields of the Somme, France, before being conscripted into the Italian Army and serving jail-time in Italy as a draft resister and conscientious objector. Ernesto joined the Anthroposophical Society in Milan in 1919. He first met Rudolf Steiner in 1920 at the Goetheanum, the Anthroposophy headquarters in Switzerland. Ernesto left the Goetheanum in 1924 when Steiner retired from public life. He migrated to Australia in 1926 with aspirations for establishing a career as an artist in Australia. Instead, having arrived in Australia, he was again drawn into farm management and agricultural work. Ernesto was a champion for biodynamic agriculture, Anthroposophy, and the Austrian New Age philosopher, Rudolf Steiner - causes to which he devoted the rest of his life. In 1928 he initiated the first Anthroposophy meetings in Melbourne. In 1930 Ernesto made a grand tour of biodynamic enterprises in Europe and met the leading biodynamics advocates and practitioners of the day in Germany, Switzerland and England, including Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, Erika Riese, Ernst Stegemann, and Carl Mirbt. In 1935 Ernesto and his partner, Ileen Macpherson, who was also an anthroposophist and a member of the ECAFG, began their biodynamic farm called Demeter Biological Farm in Dandenong, Victoria. Ernesto was a founder of the Anthroposophical Society Victoria Michael Group in 1932, and he became its leader in 1962. (shrink)
